  • It was a beautiful day on the Island of Sodor and Thomas is puffing along his branch line with Annie and Clarabel, enjoying himself enormously. He soon meets Bertie, who is having a most unpleasant journey driving over the bumpy roads. At the station, Thomas finds out that Bertie has lost his trust in the railway's service after it failed to deliver tar to mend the roads two weeks earlier, and makes it a point to find the source of the problem.
Meanwhile, James is complaining about having to do Percy's work while the green engine is at the harbor, and takes his anger out by bumping the cars, who vow to pay him back. Gordon laughs and advises James that if he pretended to be sick, he would not have to shunt cars or go to the quarry, and James happily decides to try it. When Thomas arrives, James pretends to be ill, and Thomas offers to take James' cars to the Quarry for him and as the tank engine puffs away, Gordon and James snicker quietly to each other, delighted their plan had worked. The cars, who are still cross at James for bumping them, decide to take their anger out on Thomas, deciding that one engine is as good as another. On the way back from the quarry, the cars push Thomas over some points and onto a jetty, which causes the tether to snap and the jetty floats across a muddy pond and sinks. Thomas finds the unexpected incident humiliating, especially since the day had started so well too.
Duck arrives and pulls away the cars while Edward brings the Breakdown Train and helps bring Thomas home on a flatbed. On the way, Thomas suddenly remembers about the missing tar and tells Edward all about it. The blue engine then recalls a tar tanker was left at his station and offers to collect it to ensure it will be delivered to Bertie's road mending crew now. Later that day, James and Gordon apologize to Thomas for the trick, playing it off as a simple misunderstanding. Just then, Bertie arrives and is feeling much more happy now. He informs Thomas that the road is finally being mended and he has regained his trust in the railway. Gordon and James, feeling rather uncomfortable about the discussion of trust, puff slowly and silently away to the sheds. However, Thomas still has company, for it so happens that the toad from the pond has stowed away on his running board and, after Thomas concludes the day has been full of surprises, the toad looks forward to a ride home and croaks loudly, noisily agreeing.
