Partie Vingt et un Cars, horses, boats, and every heart pounding risk=taking and dangerous application of speed were the air Pereg breathed for the next ten years. Luxury, beautiful women, wild parties, the globe-trotting young Prince kept himself in a constant state of stimulation. His gym workouts became legend, his sporting victories made him appear as a super hero to the population of the world. Meanwhile his father’s vision for Dubai was just as inspiring, stimulating and stunning as the lifestyle of Pereg. The Arabian Prince riding the magic carpet, and rubbing the lamp that produced a genie that gave him infinite wishes, or so it seemed to the outside world. Father and son worked together, and it was very clear that their country, their beloved city, was the future of the world. It went on and on. It was fun! It was very exciting. Hang gliding and zip lining from the highest places, places most people cannot go. So like his life, in such a high and lofty place out of reach to nearly every person on earth. His poetry also took off, getting wide recognition. Personal, intimate poetry on the subject of love coming from a poet who is bound by tradition to be enshrouded in absolute privacy. It was a living irony, but so delicious to the public. Popularity swept into Pereg’s life like gale force winds. The avalanche of attention came full force, pictures of his handsome face blanketed screens large and small around the planet. Invitations poured in as well: celebrities, world leaders, fellow royals, supplications from charitable organizations, local hoypoloi transparently invading his life in attempts to engratiate themselves to his favor and win a personal appearance at their private homes, and an invitation to address the United Nations. Sports clubs worldwide wanted him to hand out trophies, competitions wanted him to adjudicate contestants, competitions wanted him to compete, and even a gymnastics team wanted him to become their team captain even though he had never trained in gymnastics. His social secretary started to show signs of strain, so three more were vetted and hired by the Palace so there was a team to handle this onslaught. Lights blinked, and he could feel the vibration of the bass beat through the soles of his feet. Gyrating bodies on every kind of alcohol and drug were writhing, bumping and grinding in a sea of sensuality, as washes of colored light swept across their heads. Pereg felt giddy, surrounded by beautiful women, swaying his hips to the beat, and being showered with gropes, kisses, thieving hugs and drunken adulation. On and on into night after extended night of partying and playing. Mornings became more of a trial, hard to wake up with little sleep, dehydrated and his ears ringing from the endless amplified noise. He went to the gym daily, sometimes two or three times a day, for vigorous workouts. He bought and drove trophy cars, grew his private zoo into legendary scope, and just kept going, and going, and going, and going. One morning he woke with nothing planned. He sat on his bed sipping coffee and was suddenly gripped with fear. It was too quiet! He needed stimulation! He needed noise, attention, distraction… Mid-thought he stopped. He wondered what he needed distraction from. What was this fear gripping him? Where was the Little Bird? He hadn’t seen it in more than a year. He went out for a walk into the city thinking that if he walked to the Temple the Little Bird might find him. He turned the corner away from the main street of shops with their garish, gleaming fare to extract the cash from rich patrons, and was suddenly confused. There were supposed to be rows of single-story homes, hovels really, where the poor lived. There should have been stray dogs in the streets, filthy children wearing rags and barefooted running up to any stranger to beg for coins. There should have been the smell of rancid cooking oil and over-seasoned food to cover the taste of slightly spoiled meats. But there was a barrier, beyond which there were trucks, concrete mixers, and crews of workers hammering and sawing, yelling instructions and carrying loads of cut lumber and other building materials. And he remembered, the Temple was no more, urban development had blighted that section of the city. Where is Madame, he wondered, and Finn, Ness and the others? There would be no Little Bird.
