      Part of it might be because there are people out there who will push someone off the cliff and try to make it look like an accident. I'm all about people killing themselves out of stupidity, but when I see something like this, I remember being shoved in a way where it looks like an accident by an asshole who was bullying me and no one saw what happened even though there were people around. I'm definitely not going to the edge of the grand canyon, especially with a group size like that...or just go there without anyone...or never.

      Wilmington, NC, there is a long board walk, you can see the North Carolina Battle ship docked across the way, on the Cape Fear River.
      It's got a major tidal current. I have seen 5, 6 year olds, sitting, legs hanging over the boardwalk riverwall, over the river. Parents couldn't care less.
      I don't let our English Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, near the rail.
      There is no way to pull yourself out as it's a huge drop in, no bank, and that current is probably faster then you can walk.

I saw 3 young men between 18 and 25 or so , climb over a wall and go out on a sliver of rock about 2 feet wide , all covered in dust and loose rock , winds blowing like crazy , then stops , then blows again. They climb out about 50 yards and one of them has a panic attack. The other 2 get scared and leave the poor dumb schmuck out there hanging on for dear life.

    We went to the GC with a teenager years ago. We would go to an area where there was a fence or railing and he would not go close to even the fence. In other areas we would be walking where there was no fence and he would go closer to the edge than where there was a fence. I asked him why this was so and he said that the need for a fence indicated a clear danger that one could fall and the lack of a fence indicated less risk. I told him he should be a lawyer. Turned out he had Asperger's and thinking like this was one of his symptoms.

This would be a great place for SPECTRE to have their hideout, disguised as a holiday resort and fitness centre. A secret opening in the rock would lead to the high-tech command centre. If enemy agents were caught spying, they would be tied to a rock so that the wild eagles could peck at their body. The mountain lions would take their turn. Flies would lay their eggs in the rotting mess which was left.

      Every year many fall to their deaths or just go 'missing' - & there are critters out there that can & will kill humans or otherwise do them harm (mountain lions & vipers for instance; & there are others, including some venomous bugs).
      Water is scarce/hard-to-find in most of the surrounding area (there are some drinking fountains in or near some of the heavily-trafficked tourist areas & some seasonal creeks or washes [frequented by both deer & mountain lion (following deer); so be careful; BTW: even a deer can do great harm to humans].
      And then there's the weather in northern Arizona: the temperature often fluctates as much as 40°F every 24 hours (on occassion only 30°, & very rarely only 20°); so, if you get lost on foot or stalled in a vehicle & you're not prepared, then you could be in a heap of trouble.
      U.S. National Park personnel don't try to make every square foot of the Parks child-proof or idiot-proof; some heavily-trafficked areas sometime get extra safety measures added (like rails somewhat near a cliff's edge); but don't expect there to be safety apparatus all over each Park (for safety measures are the exception rather than the rule). Park personnel expect adults to use 'common sense,' follow signs, & also to look out for their children.
      I lived in the knolls of northern Arizona - about 70 miles south of the Grand Canyon - were there were some houses strewn around about a mile apart from one another at the time, & folk - evrn some out hunting - would get lost & some died from exposure (about 1 every 2 or three years would die within 10 miles of where I stayed; & every year or two someone in the area would save a lost soul or two). It's easy to get lost, walk in circles, &/or get hurt out in the woods if you're not careful &/or unlucky.

    I find it odd that so many comments here are calling the kids childish and/or dumb. It's interesting to me. Why? The people making the comments are the types that do climb down the edge to take selfies and fall to their brilliant deaths. It's dry dark humor. It's the brilliant types here that don't appreciate that. Lord knows they can't comprehend it. I guess it's like gravity in a way to them isn't it? I mean they think they're immune to it too. 😄.

    A guide at the Grand Canyon told me at least 2 people fall in very month. He said people just ignor the posted warning signs and have very little respect for authority now a- days. He said a pretty, 20 year old, college girl fell in 2019 and when they went down to retrieve the body, by chopper, she was in 8 pieces (2 arms, 4 leg parts, a head and a torso); they were scattered widely about; they had to look for her parts.
    She fell 477 ft onto the Huge clump of boulders below. What a mess, the guide said and so very sad, he said... for she was so young and so very pretty.

    • @seththomas9105
      @seththomas9105 2 года назад

      What I find interesting is how we as a species always say it's MORE tragic because she was a "Young and so very pretty" woman. What if she was 40 and homely, a bit overweight but a nurse who worked with terminally ill children and their families? What if the "Young and so very pretty" woman was a complete psycopath egomaniac that abused animals and performed deviant sex acts on minors? But, at least she left a good looking corps, she was just to stupid to live. Mr. Darwin doesn't care what your physical attribues are, he cares about your common sense and intellect.

The fact that it happens and those buffoons who want a cool picture keep risking their lives to repeat the process is laughable.
