Leslie Danon, massive crush on her at the time, so charming, i had no idea she was 28 when the show first aired, what the hell, she def looked a bit younger .
I was obsessed with this show back when it first aired and i still love it , it may be zero budget in comparison to the shows that inspired it but that's part of it's charm , it would be zero budget even without the comparisons , but it's damn entertaining as a spoof of all the other similar shows at that came out around the same time , always had it's tongue firmly placed in it's cheek and on a dramatic level , is a bit deeper than it first appears .
One of my favorite episodes is Switch , they switch each others bodies and it's hilarious .
Scorpio , Taurus, Centaur, Apollo , i still get all giddy when i see that , this show will never die
And yeah, Leslie Danon, and Jill Sorgen

  • @bobbyshaddoe3004

I remember watching this when it was on and kind of liking it. Now, I look at it for what it was meant to be... a parody of power rangers, intentional or otherwise. I thought Leslie dannon was hot, and sure a lot of this is rather confusing in plotting and very cheap in it's production values, a lot was left unexplained and unexplored, and it did seem that the characters barely got along and just tolerated each other.

I remember watching the first episode on USA Network back during the 90's when I was 12. I saw the first episode.... and NEVER saw the damn series again. Out of all the Power Ranger rip-offs out at the time, this show was hands down the WORSE. Tatooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills was HORRIBLE. At least Samuari Cyber Squad, despite all of it's problems, had cool fight scenes and a cool villain (I saw every episode) and VR Troopers was actually good. but the Tattooed idiot show was unwatchable.

I've never heard of this show before until you mentioned it on Beyond the Black Rims. The title itself sounds like its supposed to be a parody of MMPR sketch, not a fully realized show. It doesn't seem like I missed much though it did make for a very entertaining review!

  • @pabulum28
    @pabulum28 8 лет назад +3

I've watched several of the episodes recently on the DVD release (because I was in the mood for something rather craptacular). I actually don't mind that the characters are kind of crappy people, because (not to sound too much like a curmudgeon but) a lot of people in real life are very crappy, and in a way the Alien Fighters' crappiness makes them sort of, for lack of a better term, more realistic than the Mary Sues and Marty Stus of so many other scifi series. One could just chalk it up to bad writing here, but I kind of see it as an attempt at a sort of realism, as the characters are flawed teenagers, and are more people-ish that way.
That said, it is true that the show gets out of its depth by trying to engage plots that are more layered than "beat the bad guy up." As the show's logistics only allows for a formulaic twenty minutes of brief-drama-then-engage-the-enemy-then-tantrum-by-Gorganus every episode, it *can't* get too deep--which is why it should never have even tried episodes where Drew and Gordon are pseudo-significant-others (the "Commitments" episode) or the one where everyone reads Drew's diary (the "Trust" episode)--especially in the latter case, the maguffin of the memory fader is just a necessary, quick workaround when there just isn't time, given the show's limited parameters, for that quantum of character development. I still like the series on the whole anyway, as much of a knockoff as it might be.

There's actually one thing (the only one) which is kinda cool on this show : normally on sentai (or inspiration of it), women characters always transforms last. Here, the first one who call the transformation is a woman and the last one is a man.

I feel like a lot of these complaints can be lobbed at Power Rangers as well.
Flat 2 dimension characters who are just stereotypes. Check.
Mid 20 actors playing high school teenagers. Check
Stuff about character background brought up and then never mentioned again. Check.
Melee weapons mainly used as blasters and not as actual weapons. Check.
Villain sending down 1 monster even though it's obvious they could send down more. Check.
Villain motivation makes no sense and is never really defined. Check.
Characters called by ancient force with no defined reason for why he chose these specific kids. "Bring me 5 teenagers with attitude."
Hell just about every other American made/translated Tokusetsu's actually go out of their way to explain why the specific characters were chosen.

Well, what about Mystic Knights of Tir na Nog? That is the only other one I heard of other than this one (the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles one that Saban did notwithstanding).
Also, from what I remember of this show, it ever did one thing right, and it was in one episode only. It riffed the whole "one monster at a time" strategy and made it so that the heroes almost lost after having to fight more than one monster, and that the person who came up with that strategy was not the primary antagonist but his sidekick and that when he learned that little muppet went behind his back he essentially let the heroes win by teleporting the monster back.

    • @mattwo7

Back when this show originally aired, I wrote a review of it for the Penn State Science Fiction Society newsletter. I'm pretty sure it was the longest thing (and certainly the longest review) I ever wrote for that publication (I had watched several episodes in order to give it a fair shot, and I needed to vent!).
I was particularly proud of describing Gorganus as looking "like Darth Vader if Roger Corman had directed Star Wars" and the bird as the show's best special effect (I had no idea he was Squiggy, though!).
I didn't stick around long enough to see the third set.

They used footage from a Japanese superhero show for the monsters and monster battles. Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters is what you get if you give the makers an even lower budget and no Sentai footage to make the episodes around.

That show is to Power Rangers as to what "Shadow War Of Succession" & Tattoo Assasins were to Mortal Kombat.

Oh my god, this exists! I saw this in Cablin in Argentina and from many many years I thought it was a fever dream or something cause I never could find any info about it! Even when the show was dubbed and aired in other countries, it´s true, seems everyone forgot about it =P Now I kinda want to see it again just for nostalgia (and god that nimbor thing still creeps me out...)

I remembered a fart joke from this show, and couldn't remember the actual show itself. It went like this:
    Gorganus: "Lechner, I have gas."
Lechner: "Must Have been something you ate."
Gorganus: "NOT ME YOU FOOL, THE EARTH!"
I had to do some serious digging to try and find out what this was from and that's how I ended up here.

I remember when this aired on USA Network back in 1994. It was a Monday through Friday afternoon show and then aired I believe on Sunday mornings from 11:00 in the morning until noon. This was when USA Networks programming was a lot better than when NBC bought the network out to become a sister network for NBC. Barry Dillar who owned USA Network until 2003 I believe it was decided to change the programming or I should say clean it up in order to sell the USA Network.

They used chalk to make punches look cool? That's so horribly cheap. Even Beetleborgs used explosive squibs.
I remember Cyber Squad actually, there was that one episode where the team female character created a virus that was adorably innocent and stupid and then it turned evil suddenly and they had to kill it.
That's really the only episode I remember clearly.
Who voices Nimbar by the way. He sounds like John Delancie a bit but it's can't be him. He wasn't that starved for work in the 90s, he still had Star Trek.

Glenn Shadix, the fat guy from Beetlejuice and the mayor of Halloween Town. Also Tobais Whale in Justice League Unlimited, Brain and Monsieur Mallah in Teen Titans, Senator Nado in the 2001 version of Planet of the Apes and he was in 4 episodes of Jackie Chan Adventures.

OH YEAH TTAFFBH. Having a cool, tortured new member with their own powers has never done anything for any Tokusatsu ever. Except Power rangers....and Sentai.....and Kamen Rider.....and Ultraman.....and Tomica Fire Hero....and Ryukendo....and Lion-Maru....and 17.....and Jumborg Ace......

I liked the idea of them not being friends at first. It worked out because this show avoided one MAJOR plot hole that Power Rangers, VR Troopers, and a lot of other Saban Shows all seemed to fall into. You see, Emperor Gorganus DIDN'T know who the Galactic Sentinels were, unlike Rita who routinely watched the Power rangers while they weren't in uniform and never really seem to take advantage of that information.
Them not being friends helped hide their identities, and made for a very different group dynamic then some of the other shows. On those shows, they often swung to the other extreme, where it seemed everyone in the group all got along too well.
And seeing that this was on cable, it probably could have gotten away with a few more darker elements and been a very different show. Like how since the monsters were never really defeated, they'd be learning new tricks about fighting the TTAFFBH- actually making them tougher then the standard Power Ranger monster.
But hell, I still watched it-and I enjoyed it for the fun goofiness of it all. There was a lot of room for improvement, but I think it had its own strengths as well.

"Centaur" and "Apollo"? Yes, those famous constellations... XD I guess "Sagittarius" didn't have the same ring. Also, there's no "Apollo" constellation! He was the sun! Dangit, writers!

Mystic Knights of Tir na Nog wasn't so bad for an original American Toku.
