  • The impact of war is so much more than just the emissions from tanks, ships and warplanes - modern warfare has a devastating effect on people and the planet.
So, what is the scale of planetary destruction wrought by militaries? And in a world where nations justify war on the basis of supposed ‘security’ benefits - isn’t the harm to the earth not also a huge threat to our collective security?
Join Ali Rae in this sixth episode of #AllHailThePlanet - a 10 part series delving into the social, economic and political forces undermining meaningful global action on climate change.
In this episode, Ali speaks with Author & Researcher at the Transnational Institute (TNI), Nick Buxton; Author & Associate Professor of International Relations at Georgetown University, Marwa Daoudy; and Political Scientist & Co-director of Brown University’s ‘Costs of War’ project, Neta Crawford.

This is the longest period in world history we have been at peace.
Small wars but no big wars: WW I and II, 100 years war, War of 5 emperors (China), etc.

@@veramae4098~ There’s no progress in shrinking the cavernous wealth gap. It’s keeping the country at war that helps to grow it. Capitalism needs a situation where an economic advantage can be exploited and selling arms to people who are at war provides the perfect opportunity in the best of economic ways; because weapons are the most expensive commodity on earth. It was also written they would ascend to rulership over the world at the appointed end time when they will be brought down to something like a fiery furnace, all the tyrants. If you want biblical evidence read Psalms 110:5, 6. and if you think that was for back then read Ezekiel 26:16, 17 and Isaiah 14:9-32. The Most High will install His Son to rule over earth when all the tyrants are dealt with. You can google if you don't have a bible.

And how is Qatar's ruling class doing with fighting climate change? Oh, yes - we never look at the problems with Qatar because it funds Al Jazeera which plays the role of whitewashing Qatar's problems and highlighting the problems with the rest of the world. And of course they delete all criticism from the channel - someone watching and waiting for anything questioning Qatar. Al Jazeera is part of the problem.

There's a concept you have to remember.
If the Military is given a budget and does not use all the money in that FY, then the next year the Appropriations will reduce the budget to the smaller amount used. That leads to downsizing and to fewer units of whatever was funded, and fewer soldiers to maintain and operate, meaning a smaller Company or Division or fewer Companies and Divisions.
That means reducing Officers too. And middle level Officers and Senior Officers don't want to be cut from the budget.
So it's important to the Military that the Threat Level is always growing, maybe changing but over all growing. A Peaceful world means a smaller Army and people get discharged and Defense Contractors do the same.
What did President Eisenhauer say? "Beware the Military Industrial Complex."

Russia's war against Ukraine caused 180 mln. tons additional CO2 emissions in the last 2 years and keeps rising. Compare that to 52 mln. tons US army annual emissions. It is not so much about the size of an army as it is about what you do with that army. Russia is waging a full-scale war, and the resulting emissions are huge.

    • @CmdrSoCal

The purpose of the Ukraine conflict is to transfer hundreds of billions in military hardware and cash to the next home of the Israelis/Khazar Mafia/Talmudic, Kabbalistic "jews"(Revelation 2:9) as well as propaganda distraction/ theft-money laundering through Ukraine of billions/ arming terrorist all over the world with weapons meant for Ukraine/ weakening christian Europe with divide and conquer (mass murdering each other with war/cutting energy from Russia/wasting money with war spending/lowering food production..). NATO and Russia are depopulating the country and building the military for the next Israel (Chabad's Khazarian 'Heavenly Jerusalem" project). NATO sends the hardware and cash, the Russian attack depopulates the country. Zelensky has said Ukraine will be a big Israel.

    • @Debbie-henri
      @Debbie-henri 7 месяцев назад

And it's not as if we can ignore the Ukraine conflict. Everyone in Europe knows that if no other country tried to interfere in Putin's plans, and just let his forces take the Ukraine, he will take other ex-Russian territories first before exacting revenge on other countries that he has decided to foster a dislike for (in accordance with historical clashes. So look out Germany, France, the UK)
And America shouldn't think they'd be off his hit list either. There have been plenty of face offs between Russia, their friends China and North Korea - and America.
In fact, I understood there is a sort of understanding between China and Russia, that both parties would like to divide the world between them, and have decided which landmasses they intend to claim
Also, don't forget, Xi Xinping announced that everything outside the Earth's atmosphere belongs to China as well. I know, it's laughable. But I've heard this claim several times.
      So, what do you do?
Let them take it all away just so the Earth can survive?
Have you seen how either nation treats their own countries?
China is a mess of demolished buildings, green painted landscapes, tottering infrastructure, tofu-dregs buildings, a vast desert that is shortly going to have a plague of rabbits released on it, and a population that is becoming less sociable by the day.
Russia has multiple dumpsites containing toxic chemicals and radioactive waste. Barely any of it is stored properly. Large numbers of people have sickened and died due to the waste problem. There are mafia like gangs, a lot of sleaze operations.
Worst of all, Russia and China have no problem at all with digging up more fossil fuels and burning it like there's no tomorrow. Sorry - but ING it until there is no tomorrow.
If your country makes it clear that it isn't prepared to fight for its freedom, then that freedom will be taken away.
We need to not only change the way we run our agricultural systems, control tourism (which is a massive climate change beast in itself), change the way our transport/homes/businesses are fuelled, drastically reduce consumption (of both food and the endless mass produced trash), but we need to find ways to 'safely' cut the the emissions of all Allied militaries, but not to the extent we render them useless to full on attack.
I mean, what do you propose?
Electric tanks? One puddle and it's shot itself in the foot.
Cut down on jet practice flights? Then how do Western military pilots maintain their high combat standard? Can't do everything in a simulator.
Same with naval practice. If you're putting marines on simulators, then how do you know what's really going on out on the oceans? How can they tell if there's something new out there?
I would love it if there was no need for the military.
However, there are nations out there which simply do not want to shake hands, or just pretend that they do while they build up their war machine in private. History is replete with examples.

Exactly. Having that military as a means of deterrence is far more sound than getting pulled into an actual conflict. It would be better that this deterrence was controlled by some sort of international assembly, but until we have that in any meaningful sense NATO and Indo-Pacific alliances are a top priority to avoid full scale wars.

Maybe some evergreens and some other drought and cold tolerant species. The land is in an area that use to be scrub forests, then converted to vineyards during Communism, then plots were sold off to individuals by the city in this now Villa Zone by the town. It's mostly pensioners with small villas or Dacha's that garden and maybe raise some chickens or a turkey or two.
The try to feed their kids now living in the town and who live in their parents' small Bloc flat.
But I can try to turn my quarter acre into a sort of Rewilded plot, too small to matter much, but it would grow sustainably without tilling and sprays and irrigation so that is a low cost answer to unused land.

*The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is a major consumer of energy and emitter of greenhouse gases. In fact, it's the single largest consumer of energy in the U.S. and the world's largest institutional consumer of petroleum.*
Here's a comparison of the DoD's energy consumption and emissions to a country:
    *Energy Consumption:*
The DoD's energy consumption is *comparable to that of a medium-sized country.* For instance, in fiscal year 2022, the DoD consumed enough energy to power over 2.3 million average American homes.
    *Emissions:*
The DoD's greenhouse gas emissions are significant. While it only contributes to a small percentage of total U.S. emissions, *its emissions are larger than those of many countries.* DoD emissions primarily come from fossil fuel combustion, particularly jet fuel used for military operations.

How "wrathful" do the nations look right now? And how much profiteering and plundering can the world sustain under the greedy hands of "big business"?

      Jesus was a false Messiah.
The Bible itself debunks any claim that Jesus was the Messiah.
The Bible also debunks Christianity's claim of the need of a Messiah to forgive sin.
      Example -
The Book of Isaiah is 100% valid per Christian apologists.
Isaiah clearly stated that the world will know that the Messiah is present when, paraphrased, the world is no longer at war.
Didn't happen when Jesus was alive 2000 years ago, and wars are still here.
Therefore, Jesus was, and is, a false Messiah.
Result of Jesus not fulfilling the core requirement of the Messiah, to live during the Messianic Age, which did not occur:
Around the year 100, the Church invented "Jesus, The Return" or "Messiah Version 2.0"
Yet the Bible states that the Messiah will be a mortal descendant of David not to be worshiped, and not be divine.
He will live once, and will die. Debunking "The Second Coming".
      The Trinity?
An invention by the Church in 325, at the Council of Nicea.
Yet the Bible explicitly states that God will never be split into parts, and only God is to be worshiped.
      No intermediaries required.
In fact with regard to worship, intermediaries are not permitted.
Including worship of, or prayers to, the Messiah, angels, or Saints.

Jesus' prophecy at Matthew 24:21, 22 serves as a marker, pinpointing our time as it speaks of the coming "great tribulation" that, if allowed to continue unabated, would result in the total destruction of all life on earth. It further shows, however, that it will be stopped short before we destroy ourselves and the planet..."unless those days were cut short, no flesh would be saved. But on account of the chosen ones, those days will be cut short."
Our "advanced" human race is nearing total self-destruction, as Christ's warning says would be the case.
All that's going on in the world matches what the Bible foretells would happen before God's Kingdom becomes established here on earth. It's getting close as can be seen by the growing hostility between nations around the world. Revelation 11:18
But as Psalm 2:2, 3 shows, the governments don't want any part of it. They will reject God's Kingdom and be rejected themselves by God.
Daniel 2:44 “In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed. And this kingdom will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it alone will stand forever."
This is the same Kingdom Jesus taught his followers to pray for...
Matthew 6:9, 10 You must pray, then, this way: “‘Our Father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified.
Let your Kingdom come. Let your will take place, as in heaven, also on earth."
God's Word shows there is hope for the future despite what we are inflicting on our planet...
Luke 21:28 "But as you see these things start to occur, lift your heads up because your deliverance is getting near."
Psalm 37:29 "The righteous will possess the earth, and they will live forever on it."
Human rule is soon to end.

I've yet to hear a missionary debunk Zechariah 8:23 -
“This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies says:
In those days ten men from different nations and languages of the world
... will clutch at the sleeve of one Jew.
      And they will say,
‘Please let us walk with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’”
      --
      Also,
the Messiah can only be present during the Messianic age, which didn't occur 2000 years ago, and still has not.
      Some requirements -
      Daniel 12:2
      Resurrection of the dead
      Isaiah 11:9, 10
Knowledge of God throughout the world, and obedience to God
And finally in this brief and incomplete list, when the Messiah comes -
"Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more"
      (Isaiah 2:4)
Boy, this sure hasn't happened yet.
Big picture, I’m extremely grateful for Christianity.
I celebrate a return to the shared beliefs of Judaism and Christianity for many who have worshiped the "false gods" of unbalanced pleasure, non-accountability, materialism, infidelity, and more.

Jeremiah 10: 23 ‘ mans way does not belong to him…it does not belong to him who is walking to direct his step.’

@MarcPagan Well, some parts of the Bible are symbolic with a modern day fulfillment. There is definite confusion that only becomes clear upon deeper study. I appreciate your looking into the scriptures as you clearly have.
People insist today that the modern nation of Israel is God's chosen nation. Israel was - at one time. But what did Jesus say on this matter?
Matthew 23:37,38. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the killer of the prophets and stoner of those sent to her-how often I wanted to gather your children together the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings! But you did not want it. 38 Look! Your house is abandoned to you.
Christians also claim the Kingdom of God is in your heart, and not an actual incoming government, despite what Daniel 2:44 and many other scriptures show. They base this idea on Jesus's words at Luke 17:20-21 And, having the question “When is the Reign of God to come?” put to him by the Pharisees, he answered them “The Reign of God is not to come under watching, 21 and they will not say ‘Here it is’ or ‘there’; for the place to find the Reign of God is within you.”
To whom was he speaking? The Pharisees. Was the Kingdom of God in their hearts? They were intent upon having Jesus killed. It clearly was not in their hearts They wanted no part of it. Instead, as the representative of God’s Kingdom, the Kingdom was in their presence though they did not not recognize it. A different translation puts it this way...
On being asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God was coming, he answered them: “The Kingdom of God is not coming with striking observableness; 21 nor will people say, ‘See here!’ or, ‘There!’ For look! the Kingdom of God is in your midst.”
Jesus declared: “I am he who searches the kidneys and hearts, and I will give to you individually according to your deeds.”-Revelation 2:23
With regard to modern day Israel.. in Bible times they were commanded not to use horses in battle, but were instead to rely upon God's protection.
King David of Israel was mindful of God's prohibition against multiplying horses. In his victory over Hadadezer of Zobah, David could have added many horses to his army, but, instead, he kept only the number he deemed sufficient for his immediate purposes and ordered the remainder to be hamstrung.-2 Samuel 8:3, 4; 1 Chronicles 18:3, 4; compare Joshua 11:6, 9
How do you think God feels about modern day Israel's reliance upon tanks or even the threat of using nuclear weapons? Malachi 3:6 says God doesn't change.
I'm not going to continue here. But if you'd like to continue this discussion I'd be happy to through my profile. Have a good day.

I have been asking these question and nobody is looking until now. When a bomb blows up, it releases gases but worse it destroys something. Maybe a piece of land or forest. That is harming the environment.
How do we get the Business of War out of our Government?
Just look at the fuels being burned and the manufacturing of ammo and equipment and all those things we build just to blow up or worse, when they get old, get sold to 3rd world countries and new systems replace them. Always have to have better stuff than the Chinese or Russians.

Preemptive arrest? WTF? For what? Pre-crime? It doesn't surprise me from a country that has ubiquitous CCTV coverage for police surveillance and antisocial behaviour orders (more pre-crime BS). So much for Western concerns for human rights and "human security" (BTW, a much better word!). We need to pull our heads out of our butts or our national security obsessions are bring on a massive catastrophe. Cooperation and collaboration is the only way we are going to keep from destroying ourselves, but meh, I think a lot of people are currently on board to destroy others and themselves. I am not optimistic, but I remain hopeful.

Cooperation and collaboration are an endemic component of socialism, but are considered a vulnerability in capitalism where competition is emphasized. The inherent component of competition is that there’s always a winner AND a loser, and more often than not, more than one loser. Scapegoating the impoverished as being the risk that needs to be eliminated is the way the capitalist frames the competition for security, food and water resources.

Maybe 50 generations of Goat Herding in the Sahel has a contributory effect of the desertification of the Sahel and the expansion of the Sahara?
So, foster village based Regenerative Agriculture, or Syntropic Farming methods, making use of simple land shaping techniques like in their ancestral past the region had farmers that cut Half Moon patterns with sloping topography to allow for Serial Succession in the patterns. Planting cover plants and fruiting shrubs first and eventually taller tree species. These Half Moon patterns cut are very good and collecting and storing water from the seasonal rains and the cover plants produce nitrogen fixing interactions with soil fungi to enrich the soil.
So they are learning to hold the water on the land and to cover the land and plant a mixture of species NOT Monoculture Farming.
    It's very sustainable.
