She tells the story of a woman who was falsely accused and put to death. The Quran requires proof of accusations and so those fervent radical believers went against its teaching. That is a big part of the problem, ignorance and radicalism. People need to be taught the real Laws and ways to act and not just jump to punishments and severe extremes, because they focus on only those parts. They need to be taught they are disobeying the very laws that they preach and learn to do better and hold those accountable who act out of anger, hate and fear. They need to weed out the twisted views and teach people to act civilized and with compassion and love. She is right, it needs to come from those within that faith to stand up and say, this is wrong, we need to do better. The women and enlightened men need to make their voices heard to effect positive change and become what their faith is supposed to be.

This is a very refreshing and observational view. It's a shame that are regressive liberals who would rather call it racist to criticize Islam in the hopes that that criticism brings peace to the Muslim world and the the globe.

Huge fan of the brave Ayaan Hirsi Ali! My own recent post elsewhere:
Ya know what? It would be so refreshing if Muslims could stop the incessant navel-gazing and self-absorbed focus on "assimilation", vs. "retaining identity" vs. "traditionalism" vs. "radicalism" vs. "reform" and probably so many other choices of protest! ENOUGH ALREADY!!
Muslims need to stop over-thinking every conceivable and petty issue under the sun in terms of right vs. wrong/halal vs. haram, and how all the minutiae of existence jives or does not jive with ISLAM! Instead Muslims, and everyone else, should start thinking about right vs. wrong in terms of how humans across the planet are challenged by needless poverty, and how that jives with our own internal concepts of human justice and the good of the planet.
Islam has indeed attempted to imbue its followers with a sense of supreme justice, justice which should avail itself during every single moral decision, large and small, INSTANTLY. Valid decisions should be possible WITHOUT the time consuming process of weighing them against Islam's sacred texts. Texts which today are a bit difficult to digest, perhaps they could have been more easily internalized were they not so frequently gruesome and freakishly self-righteous.
How is the average Muslim, the overwhelming majority of whom are illiterate, supposed to understand these issues?
A "good" person knows instinctively their own moral decision -- religious dogma not always the best underpinning of that which is "moral". The question becomes: is the answer according to Islam the only valid moral choice? As a dedicated agnostoic -- I care first about morality and second about the awesome possibility there is something divine and loving governing us all.
The moral ambiguities of the modern world are difficult even for the most liberal of us, atheists, humanists, artists, journalists (like me), etc. At some point, we all need to stand on our own two feet, and stop deferring to the sometimes faulty wisdom of the ancients, and start relying on the wisdom of our own hearts and minds as morally digested over our own lives and over the centuries.
More importantly, we need to stop arguing about what is "moral", and stop pretending any one of us is more "moral" than the next person, and start realizing the only thing that will move this world forward is love and acceptance. Sadly, that is hard to do when the people with whom you need to share acceptance, want you to burn forever in hell. And that's Islam as understood today.
    Muslims? Your solution?

+painterly222 oh youve said a mouthful from this maybe well meaning mouthful it is obvious you know nothing about islam or other faiths . It seems that you have fed on misleading sources . Religion is an authority on morality Scripture go back as far as the bronze age in which morality is an essential component of the human make up . It could not have come from any other source but the Divine.. Have you ever wondered how every tribe ,every community on the face of this earth has a belief in the divine since time immemorial , How did it come to affect all societies and how come there is scripture to support it at specific times in the history of humankind and not prolific like romance novels written all the time How is it that scripture has unique content unlike what humans write
think about that Human beings without divine guidance lose their humanity look at the current state of the world ,what a mess and you seriously think religious people are responsible If you do YOU have been duped ,think man think and do some independent thinking with your own wonderful brain and seek knowledge i leave you with this last thought with all the effort you make in life accumulating wealth ,engaging in good and bad deeds, trying and not trying to be moral ,facing difficulties eventually you will die and leave all your worldly possessions . Was all that for nothing You dont matter really is that how you see yourself

    • @painterly222
      @painterly222 9 лет назад

haroon hussein I have no problem with the concept of the "divine". Personally, I have a very strong belief in what is commonly referred to as a "higher power" -- in Latin it's known as "numen". What I find disturbing is when humans claim to KNOW precisely what that higher power is about -- what he/it actually WANTS beyond the simple notions of love and harmony we're all born with.
The fact that there are hundreds if not thousands of competing versions as to what the "divine" consists of proves there is positively no way of KNOWING what the divine actually is! Every society since the dawn of man has conjured its own deities, all complete with full-blown myths as to how the world came to be, and how it will end. They all come with their own rituals and codes of conduct -- many with their own holy prophets and creatures.
It's when one of those faith systems attempts to eradicate the others by insisting that only IT offers the TRUTH, while claiming moral and legal authority over all of humankind, demanding strict codes of conduct, and in the process exerting a dangerous intolerance towards "others" --- THAT is what I find to be the height of arrogance.
Islam falls squarely into that category. To assert otherwise is preposterous.

+painterly222 Since you are not familiar with what the Quran contains And therefore not familiar with Islam as it really is I must assume that your sources of information is not authentic. Let me avail you with some of the facts to reflect on with the hope that you will investigate further from various authentic sources on the web and in books and hopefully with your interaction with muslim scholars
      1) THe Quran states "This is not a new message . It is the same message that we sent to you via our previous messengers Hence you will find that muslims accept all the Abrahamic messengers and it is a command in the Quran that a m,uslim accepts all the messengers who came before .You cannot be a muslim if you reject anyone of them From the earliest scriptures to the Quran you will find the spiritual message to be the same . It is the human who in different eras in historu tried to conceptualise the vision of God and started to create idols and images and pictures of God which as you know went completely out of control However you will find no imagery in judaism , Islam and certain hindu traditions as well as some indigenous tribes who retain belief in the One unseen God . The concept of God as Unseen but all powerful Creator most appeals to common sense as it eradicates imagery gone wild in the imagination and out of control . Soon the imagery becomes ridiculous
In some of the earliest scripturesof Hinduism going back to the bronze age , there are verses that state " of Him there is only One with no second and further " of Him there is no image " . The Quran states " none can grasp the vision of God ' These statements dispel ambiguities with a vie to putting us all on the same page .This then brings about unity in the concept and nature of God which should then unite all human beings in a singular belief system . Then every successive messenger of God would be accepted as the message would be the same the only purpose is to serve as a constant reminder . There would be no excuse on the part of the human being that God was unjust in sending messages to select people or sending messages sparingly such that they became lost with time .Prophet Muhammud i(pbuh) is stated in the Quran to be the final messenger and the Quran the final revelation Further the Quran states that it will be protected from corruption until the end of time and remain as a source of guidancefor the seeker of truth . The Quran has remained in its pristine form since its inception for over 1400 years You can check it out .
      2) the Quran states "LA IQRA FID DEEN" there is no compulsion in religion . In the cities of Makkah and Madina jews christians and muslims and pagans all co existed . Once a christian delegation came to Prophet Muhammud (pbuh) and consulted with him in the mosque . After the meeting the Prophet asked one of his companions to arrange for a place in one section of the mosque where they could offer their prayers . The Prophet in an effort to save the early muslims from the terrible persecution they were facing at the hands of the pagans , sent a batch of them to abbyssinia saying go to this christian king who is known to rule with justice and he will grant you sanctuary . And they were granted sanctuary
There is no my way and your way . We are the Created and when the Creator gives guidance and you follow in unison there is harmony ,If those wielding some influence and powere corrupt the original texts and confuse the message then you have disunity and disarray Religion belongs to God No human being has the right to chop and change what God has revealed since we do not possess the wisdom or the knowledge The only knowledge we have is what has been given to us by God . We of our own cannot create any new knowledge
In the quran Allah s w t challenges the arrogant " you cannot even create a fly and if the fly takes something from you , you cannot even retrieve it"
This is what i can tell you in a nutshell Muslims accept the concept of One God from the time of the creation of Adam and there is no compulsion in religion There can be dialogue as the quran says "have dialogue in the best of manners' and at the end of that dialogue if we do not come to common terms then the Quranic verse says "to you your way to me mine " no screaming no violence no profanities .
      .

haroon hussein You began your response with a typically arrogant as well as false assumption: “Since you are not familiar with what the Quran contains And therefore not familiar with Islam as it really is I must assume that your sources of information is not authentic.” You go on to suggest that I should pursue some “interaction with muslim scholars.” I have indeed been studying the Quran and the hadith for well over 15 years, and, as a working journalist, I have spoken personally to several Muslim clerics over the years. I’ve also listened to dozens of acedemic scholars of Islam as well as Muslim Imams and sheikhs, both in person and online. My assessment of Islam is absolutely based on what I have learned by seeking knowledge.
In your mind, if someone doesn’t accept Islam, that automatically means they haven’t studied it. Meanwhile there are millions of people who call themselves Muslim, who either because they are illiterate or simply have never been properly educated, have never studied the Quran at all! Why are they considered valid Muslims with no study, while I’m considered an invalid critic with years of study?
Yes, we know the Quran states that Islam not a new message, begging the question: why was it necessary at all? Personally, I believe the Quran and Islam were concocted by Muhammad as a way to eclipse all other religions, in particular Judaism and Christianity, with the goal of building a new power base for himself in Mecca. Muhammad’s lust for power played itself out throughout the decade during which he posed as a “prophet”, leading fighters who were mostly in it for the war booty.
Records show that Muhammad ordered some 100 expeditions, raids, battles and invasions - 73 that he did not participate in, 27 which he did. That’s a lot of carnage ordered by a so-called “prophet” all as a way of spreading a “religion of peace”.
I no longer call myself a Christian, but I do have faith in a higher UNKNOWABLE power. What I find particularly troubling with Islam, is that on the one hand it claims, as you wrote, to “accept all the Abrahamic messengers and it is a command in the Quran that a muslim accepts all the messengers who came before.” That SOUNDS lovely. Until you realize that Islam has in essence assigned itself to CORRECT Christianity on some of its most basic beliefs: that Jesus was the son of God, and that he died on the cross. So on the one hand, Islam says “honor the previous prophets” while at the same time calling them liars. This is but one reason why people are extremely skeptical about the way Islam came to be, and especially about the man who most certainly invented it.
I’ve always been curious as to why Islam is so intensely self-righteous when it comes to other religions and their imagery of the divine. You write about: “imagery gone wild in the imagination and out of control . Soon the imagery becomes ridiculous.” What’s “ridiculous” is the obsession of Islam about OTHER religions! Muslims choose to not depict Allah or Muhammad? Fine! But Islam should abandon its arrogant conclusion that any other religion that makes a different choice is inferior.
Another odd conclusion found in Islam: any religion that permits imagery of the divine, actually permits worship of the physical images themselves. As if kneeling and praying before a sculpture of Jesus on the cross, is actually worshipping the sculpture! That conclusion is deeply flawed.
What’s truly troubling, however, is that while Islam finds depicting the divine as deeply offensive, it has NO problem claiming to know everything ABOUT the divine and how it expects humans to behave: from how to wash our hands, to what to wear, to when and how to pray, to what to do with your little finger WHILE you pray. Islam’s insulting attempts to read the mind of God, have produced a mountain of religious rules useful for one thing: to control people.
Islam doesn’t depict Allah in art. But Islam DOES depict Allah in its book of rules, the Quran, where he is presented as an obnoxious and petty tyrant who is more interested in receiving praise, and instilling fear and inflicting ghoulish punishments, and far less interested in love and peace. Is he perhaps the spitting image of Muhammad?
One of the most preposterous claims of Islam is that Muhammad is God’s “final” messenger. Islam portrays Allah as being able to see into the future. Shouldn’t Allah have realized that the world would NOT be healed by Islam? That instead, Islam has brought death and destruction to many parts of the planet for over 14 centuries, and it only seems to be getting worse as Islam’s true believers become increasingly desperate? If the world ever needed another prophet, it's now. Why would Allah back himself into such a corner?
Muslims are so boastful of the fact that, again as you wrote, the Quran “will be protected from corruption until the end of time and remain as a source of guidancefor the seeker of truth . The Quran has remained in its pristine form since its inception for over 1400 years.” As you’re aware, much of the world sees the Quran itself, as a "corruption" of truth, and a massive insult not just to humanity but to all that IS divine. Maintaining the Quran in its “pristine form” should actually be a source of embarrassment, because it shows that Islam is incapable of introspection or improvement. It's completely bizarre that Islam is obsessed with not corrupting something that was corrupt at its inception! The Quran is SO corrupt that it continues to justify and even inspire endless acts of violence that take the lives of thousands of people every year -- many of whom are MUSLIMS! For a book which claims to be so clear in its message, the Quran is anything but!
One of your final claims is the familiar “there is no compulsion in religion,” which arises in Verse 2:256, a rather conciliatory verse “revealed” before Muhammad put together his very effective war machine. Over time, of course, Muhammad's "revelations" became increasingly hostile towards pagans, people of the book, Muslims who didn't fight hard enough, and of course people who left Islam.
Even setting aside Chapter 9, the famous Verse of the Sword, which gives Muslims a green light to fight all non-believers, the Quran is full of examples of the many ways that Islam uses EXTREME COMPULSION to force people to behave. For instance, Verse 4:56:
"Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses - We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise." Instilling fear with threats of unending pain and torture IS a form of compulsion!
Special taxes (jizyah) for nonbelievers is another form of compulsion. Here’s Verse 9:29: “Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.”
Personally, I don’t care WHAT anybody believes, as long as they aren’t arrogant and as long as they do not, in any way, attempt to force their religion on me. Many Christians in the US in particular, try to force their religion on the rest of us in the political arena, which I find abhorent. But Christians currently are not murdering people in large numbers who don’t agree with them. The same cannot be said of Islam. Islam needs to grow up, wake up or once and for all, hopefully through education and not violence, be relegated to the dustbin of history.

    Dear Ayaan,
I applaud your insight, and courage. And ask you to dig deeper. The prophet Muhammad was historically an extraordinary peace-maker. We should not only ask why young Muslims can now be persuaded by their elders to make war, but why do Western nations anathematise those who are killing, and kill them in turn? The answer, I suggest, is that homo sapiens is not capable of surviving unless an emergent species supplies the intelligence it lacks. Successful peacemakers are of this emergent genus. Here is my introduction to this idea:
    Prolegomenon
Being uniquely directed to achieve conscious survival, natural selection has driven homo sapiens - cautious and judicious man - to evolve an emergent species, homo aeternens - eternal and audacious man.
Modern examples of homo sapiens are mainly concerned to sustain societies culturally adapted to raise young homo sapiens requiring social discipline; in which women are subordinate to men; in which all accept being told what to think; in which death may be required to prove social loyalty, and may be welcomed as the final end of disorder.
In contrast, homo aeternens may be recognised as the first to conceive of personhood generally transcending death; later requiring freedom from tradition to be individually selected by the G-d of all religions that they know intuitively; in which lives are necessarily, and incorrigibly, individual.
Young and adult homo aeternens are disputatious; dislike routines, rituals, discipline; become explorers, inventors, mystics, iconoclasts, feminists; their progeny continue this evolutionary course.
Past and present major conflicts, secular and religious, can therefore be understood as instances of homo sapiens attempting to prevent homo aeternens from disturbing social order; or caused by individual homo aeternens challenging the traditions, beliefs and the social ambition of homo sapiens.
A common response by the higher ranks of homo sapiens is to persuade young homo aeternens that it is necessary for them to make war, to kill others and die.
This removes them as a threat to the status quo, and to the higher ranks.
Easy to understand. Easy to apply!

*Sahih Bukhari* Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64 Narrated 'Aisha:
that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he *consummated* his marriage when *she was nine years old*, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).

Also nobody is saying that baby bashing, rape or anything bad someone from the west or non muslim did was fine or ok. This is not about their bad deeds. This is about Islam being a violent, sadistic, brutal and stupid religion, which it has been proven to be so beyond a shadow of a doubt.
