big, big help, thanks. My 2¢: The LED light strips are too messy a solution, and a ton of dust will get behind the tape. Go with some kinda small fluorescent tube like a cheep desk lamp type thing. I garbage-picked a small metal cart to put this box onto, and I store blast media and other related items on it. The cart means you can wheel it out of the way when you need to. If you just bought something like a blast cabinet, you're already running out of room in your shop, I know you are.
Thanks for this video, you made a comment about air pressure, and that may be one of my problems, my air was at 110 lbs. I will try 80 first thing tomorrow.
Great job on all the mods man. I've thought about getting into sandblasting myself as a hobby so this video was really good to see what unexpected things a beginner could expect to run into and good economic ways to fix them. Thanks again.
Thanks Chris, I'm glad it helped. I did change the dust collection system from this video as well. I now use a Dyson V6 cannister with a Worx leaf blower. Works much better and the cannister has smaller vortexes which traps finer particles. Also added an intake filter and a 4" gate valve from Harbor Freight. Works great.
will try to get some up soon. i also want to add if someone buys this for their 1st sandblast experience, they wont know the difference but i have blasted 15 plus yrs so just for kicks, i did a piece with the hf gun that came with the cabinet, then i put on my 15 yr gun and man what a difference. and whats tricky to a newbie is they look identical. if u look down into gun while nozzle is out , you see the cheapo hf has a tiny hole for air, my good gun had a huge hole to supply air. trust me , throw away the gun immediately when you unpack the cabinet, go to northern tool and buy their suction gun kit. its super affordable and will save you lots of swearing. my gun has never cloggeg.
I like that vibe motor idea. For those folks with the standard HF gun that comes with it. Mine kept clogging until I reamed the excess casting material out.
awesome video. You're a damn macgyver! I was thinking of getting this unit but now I see it's gonna cost so much more than just the initial purchase you've changed my mind. thx
Glad to help. One thing I figured out after all the effort to get this cabinet working was that blast places don't charge much and its usually easier to pay someone else. I had an entire corvette frame done for $215 and they even picked it up and brought it back to my house.
+scottk900 Thanks, glad it worked out for you. Those LED strips come in handy for a variety of things. I had them left over from a backlit projector screen I made, check it out under my vids.
You can also use a $5 palm sander to vibrate cabinet. Running a bunch of copper pipe with several drains will take the moisture out of compressor line.
Ive found that running a pipe up the wall then back down to a U and at the bottom of that U place a ball valve, condenses out any water from the air and collects in the valve which can be purged at any time.
Nice job on the cabinet improvements! I just finished upgrading one of these kind of blasting cabinets myself. I really like your lighting in there. Has a similar idea myself and going to be the next mod on my own cabinet.
Neat. I thought about getting one of these HFBC for small projects. I knew I would have to mod it but now that I look what you had to do with it. It might be tool much work for what I be doing. Great video btw.
David Young Thanks for the compliments. Check out my other video, I made a much better dust collection system. It takes a few mods before these cabinets will work well. Good luck
HAHA thanks. I was an aircraft mechanic for about 12 years. Worked on heli's, regional jets, cargo planes, and even the F22 and F35. I tried going to school for electrical engineering but I started late in life, had young kids at home and a job where the engineers don't make much more than I do...and the math was more than I could handle so I gave up that dream.
oh and btw, im running 2 compressors t together so i now have 18 scfm and 45 gals. they actually cycle on and off during blasting. my original setup would run constant and i had to stop every min for about 30 secs to catch up
Very nice!. I duplicated your setup, but used a smaller chlorine tablet bucket (about 1/3 the size of the 5 gallon bucket) which worked very well, and and eBay cyclonic dust collector ($16) as opposed to the $70 dust deputy. The hose appears to be a 2 1/2" Rigid brand (Home Depot, $19.95, Store SKU #650741), which was by far the best / cheapest one I could find. Lastly, I used a 20 LED rechargeable, magnetically attached, under-cabinet light (Amazon, $13.99) which was very quick and easy to install. Your setup is much better, as it doesn't have to be recharged.
Marc Johnson Nice, Glad it worked out for you! Those LED strips work great, a bit of work to solder and install but it's worth it. I changed my dust collection system, I'm now using a small leaf blower and a dyson cyclone, works great as its eliminated the filter.
Thanks for the video. I personally own 100 pound pressure pot, which I've used for sandblasting big items like motorcycle frames. Yesterday, ordered a floor model blast cabinet, from Jegs. It was 250 bucks. I have plenty of air compressors, I especially like the 2 stage V twin Ingersoll Rand. It will make more than enough air to run this. And I'm hoping that I will be able to knock down each problem as it crops up when new. I'm not sure if the cabinet has a light included, but I will simply hang a covered fluorescent under- cabinet light. Good idea to do the grounding as you showed. I have found Home Depot markets what they call multi-purpose sand, I think it's $12.00 for a 100 lb bag. Glass beads are many times that price. So I'm wondering, what kind of media can I run? Sand, glass beads, soda, Walnut hulls, aluminum oxide, do you know off the top of your head whether any blast media will work, or am I limited to glass beads? Thanks again for this whole video.
I don't use sand because of the silica danger. I went to a local blast shop and they sell $50lb bags of crushed glass for about $25 if I remember right. You can use glass, soda, walnut etc as long as you don't get stuff that is too coarse (coarse stuff is larger and will clog your gun a lot.
Thanks for the compliments. If your interested in the dust collection system check out my other video...I upgraded to something that works better and cost less. ruclips.net/video/iwuDRh7ALis/видео.html
Fantastic video!!!!! How did you attach your vibrating motor to the cabinet???? I have the same cabinet and I have two of those vibrating motors and attached them to the bottom with a hose clamp where the media comes out for changing, but doesn’t work as well as I’d like. I e watched your video multiple time, but just can’t see how you mounted it.
Hey dude, really like the review. Looking at buying one myself & found your vid the best of all I've watched. Thanks for the time you took &, I'll be using most, if not all your mods.
Rotas australis Your welcome, that's why I made this video to help others avoid all the frustration I went through. Be sure to watch my other vid in the description as I came up with a dust collection system that works much better using a leaf blower. Good luck on your blast cabinet.
Hey Brad, it's guys like you who make the true power of the internet &, I'm supremely confident that, I'm not the only guy who's benefitted from your vid. In fact, I am sure that you would be very surprised at just how many blokes you've helped & not realized. You explain things so well with no BS or ranting &, I can tell so easily you're a practical guy who's got an excellent brain. All the best to you my new friend.
i got both compressors free thru fam members who didnt need them anymore, now keeping eyes out for a 3rd one. the 2 work so good, a 3rd t into the line would be that much more cfm and more gals storage which means more work with less run time and more time in between run cycles
They will make a big difference. Before I fixed mine I spent more time just trying to get it to work than I did blasting. I almost got rid of it because it was so bad.
This is a great video! Thank you for taking the time to post it. What is the water separator for? How does that work and where do I buy it if it’s needed?
Megan Gentry Thanks for the compliments. The water separator removes the water from the compressed air which occurs with any compressor. Without it your media can stick together and clog the gun. You can buy one at any home depot, lowes, or ace hardware store or online.
Great video - very comprehensive modifications. I am new to this. What medium do you use for blasting? Silicon beads, playground sand ? What works well?
got mine figured out. cant believe nobody else is doing it and its super easy...i drilled hole at lowest point, put tube thru hole from the outside. then drilled another hole just below left glove and put tube back into cabinet and made it into a gravity suction...no more stupid tube with holes and no suction and constant running compressor for no reason. id like to know who invented the tube theory and shove it up their , well ,you know the rest....anyway i had 2 identical pieces to blast. i did one with original suction setup and it was 15 mins to finish it...after i converted it to gravity suction, i did the other piece which was the same exact piece in 4 minutes !!! the flow was so strong , i had to turn my regulator down 15 psi . so basically, im running material at a lower psi than the suction will even operate on and i have 2x the flow still...not to mention half the electric bill for my poor compressor running 11 mins extra per piece.
Raymond J Really? I've wondered if those would work. I changed mine and now use a leaf blower and a dyson multi stage cyclone canister. It works really well, I made a video on it as well. Which marine blower are you using?
Quick question. I have this same cab and did most of the mods you've done. What media are you using and pressure are you running? I'm running beads and have a few issues with the gun clogging. Thinking they are too large in diameter. ?? I found if the gun clogs, you can put your hand over the nozzle, pull the trigger, and it'll backflow and blow out the gun and feed tube in reverse direction. This usually works but gets annoying sometimes. I used an adel type clamp to hold the hose into the center of the media and that seemed to help even more.
I had the same problem, I bought some media from a local supplier and it was too big and clogged. I went to harbor freight and just bought some of their glass media. It works better...The other thing that helped a lot with clogs was to drill a small hole in the pickup hose right next to the gun.
yeah if seen that comment below but try to fit an orbital sander to the side of the funnel of a desk type blasting cabinet , that pillow vibrator is tiny and works good enough without shaking the glass beads intoo dust found them on aliexpress and there about 3 euro (4 dollar i think) cyclone filter is on there too though you have to look for the biggest size (19 / 30 vs 50 cm) was looking at vacuum cleaner motors 1200 watt for 20 euro think im going to make my own stationairy and dampened vac system for the whole shop that does both course and fine material prolly put in a restriction so the suction is low for the blast cabinet
watahyahknow Check out my other video, I changed my dust collection system and it works much better...I'm using a leaf blower with a dyson v6 canister, works really well! About the palm sander, yeah I wonder how he got it to fit also? I figured he took the case off or something.
Very nice video. Thanks. I have been powdercoating parts that I make for over a year now, and I spend way to much time wire wheeling them, and do a fair bit of sandblasting at work, so i think This will be a good first step for me. Do you reuse the media at all? Most of the stuff I do is clean just typical steel parts. no grease or rust at all.
David Smith Thanks for the compliments. I use crushed glass media that I recycle...after many hours it wears into a powder and gets sucked into the dust system. Then I just add more. I bought a 50lb bag for $20 locally.
BradK cool! that is what we do at work also was just curious if this was applicable to this type of system. we have much more industrial blasters at work, while I'm looking to pretty much do something very similar to what you did starting with the same cabinet as the base. thanks again, this is very detailed!
I watched it. I was also going to ask where do you get wire for the vibration motor? All of the wiring I typically do is AC, so I definitely don't know too much about DC wiring. Is there a certain gauge wire I need? Where do i get those little crimping connectors? I bought the same vibration motor you got as well as the same power supply. Also, did you just screw that motor to the sheet metal?
David Smith I screwed it directly to the bottom of the hopper. The wire was just some 18 gauge speaker wire I had laying around. You can get those crimp connectors at Wal mart, home depot, or harbor freight, pretty much any store that sells tools or wire will have them.
My 8 gallon 110 volt HF compressor gives me enough pressure for anything I've needed so far.......also, if you mount 2 LED work lights outside the cabinet laying on the window it provides SERIOUS light, and they stay clean.
What model compressor? I will only be doing small parts, sprockets, wheel hubs, etc. And don't wanna break the bank on a huge compressor. Thanks in advance!
Sorry for the later reply old computer died and I just bought a new one. I modified the base of the cabinet and have a pickup screen at the bottom...Works much better than the pickup tube...I also drilled a small hole in the pickup tube near the gun, it reduces clogging. Still using the blast cabinet, just a few days ago I ran it for an hour or so.
Thanks, hope it helps. I went through a lot of work just trying to make this thing reliable in the beginning. At first I spent more time messing with it than I did blasting.
Awesome video. I had no idea shop modding was such a thing. With that being said I cannot find the amount of media I should be running in this thing. I will be using it for very small projects, but still want to buy enough media to have a continuous flow of media. Anyone?
Cyle Thomas Thanks, I get my media from a local place, I use medium grit crushed glass. I think I paid 15 bucks for a 20lb bag. Harbor Freight also sells it in small bags.
Good video, I'm thinking of buying this cabinet. How tall did you build your table? From the HF webpage it looks like a 36" tall counter will make the gloves a little high for someone who is 5'6".
Thanks for the response, I realized I mis-typed (and corrected) My current bench is at 36" which seems like it will be too tall. I'm planning on building a 32" tall bench. I think the 4" drop should work well.
J Gollihugh Your welcome...And yeah, I did the same thing. After I built that table I had to stand on a small step stool. Finally I built a shorter one.
+Screenguy3 Yeah it works much better than it did before all the mods. I've never done soda blasting, but the gun I have should work for it. I've also seen small soda blast kits for decent prices online.
Instead of buying the film I just buy clear packing tape. Make sure you don't buy the cheap stuff though or it will rip in small pieces when you try to replace it. It lasts a while but yeah its a pain no matter what I have tried. When I change the tape I just remove the window completely, takes about 15 minutes or so. Others have added wing nuts with the screws glued in place on the inside to make removing and installing it easier.
jacksprrow Your welcome, hope it helps. I now have a better dust collection system using a leaf blower and a dyson cyclone. Works even better. Here's the video: ruclips.net/video/iwuDRh7ALis/видео.html
@@bgriff2517 There are two switches-one for the lights and the other for the vibration motor. They are mounted in a plastic ABS conduit box I bought at home depot.
@@bgriff2517 Yes, easy to do. Take the positive from the Power supply and run it to 1 terminal on each switch. Then on one switch run the wire to the LED's then to the ground of the power supply. On the other switch run the wire to the shaker motor then to the ground of the power supply.
BradK awesome thanks again. I bought the same vibrating motor. Got the same led lighting but mine has the 3m backing with tape. Power supply looks like your standard computer power supply.
Texasknowhow Thanks, still working well, not perfect but 100X better than before the mods. I made a few changes since this video, I am now using a Worx WG506 leaf blower and a dyson v6 cyclone canister for the dust collection system. Cheaper and better than what I had in this video. I also glued an automotive intake air filter to the back of the cabinet where the air intake is to keep dust from coming out.
Sounds like a couple good changes. I'll look those up. I've been having to wheel my cabinet outside as it creates so much dust I couldn't stand it in my shop. I had a small shop vac on the cabinet and you are right, it clogs after a while. Also my little light that came with it (Tractor Supply model) is so inadequate it's crazy. I've got to improve my set up bad.
Texasknowhow Yep, been there done that. Controlling the dust really is the most frustrating part of these cabinets. I posted a vid in the description that uses the leaf blower/dyson canister. I've got the same setup now but I'm using a cheaper blower. As far as the lighting goes the 5050 LED strips work great.
Chris Lay, Your welcome. One thing I should add is to be sure you put a screen or filter between the valve and the cabinet. If you don't do that the valve will get media in it making it really hard to adjust.
imagine that, a piece of junk sold by horror fright. this thing has more modifications than the millennium falcon. good job on making it work, though. personally, i need something a bit more turn-key, lol.
ryan barker Yep, lesson learned. I also have their 7x10 mini lathe. That is one tool I've had for about 10 years now that still impresses me. The struggle with the blast cabinet is why I made this video, hopefully it helps others get their cabinets working faster & better.
decent blast cabinets are expensive probably because they're worth it, eh? lol. i look at these things and it's very tempting, but then i think to myself for what it's worth why not build one myself? it's essentially a big metal box, eh? then again, after you buy all the materials would it even be worth the effort? the thing is i don't have the know-how to do all those mods you did. i want to sand blast and am willing to learn *that*, though i'm not prepared to become a jack-of-all-trades just to make such a thing functional. then the problem is that if i did all that, will this horrible frate product break down and start leaking blasting media faster than i can piss off my ex wife. of course it's hard to walk away from the price, and if you only use a thing rarely it might work out to be a good cost saving. need a tool once or twice? cool. you may even get lucky and buy something made slightly better than you expect. then again, you go and buy a heat gun and it doesn't work literally out of the box. the main rule to remember when buying something from there is *keep your receipt*! lol. and expect to get screwed on a few items as when it breaks you can't return it to the store, but have to go through the company what made it and they're the ones who nails you. i'm glad you made this work and, again, great job and hope it works out for you for years to come. :)
The firestick Android Yes that's a common problem and could be caused by a few things. -Moisture and humidity -Worn gun ceramic nozzle -Media with large pieces of foreign material -Line clogging I've had all of the above happen to me. I fixed a few of the problems by straining the media through a fine screen or replacing it when it got too dirty. Changing the ceramic nozzle, And drilling a small hole in the feed tube right next to the gun. Sometimes the gun tries to pull too much media through the tube, drilling the small hole helps it to breathe better and made a big difference.
BradK where exactly is the hole drilled? In the metal tube on the gun where the siphon tube attaches? If so, does the hole go above the braided hose thru the metal or thru both the flexible hose and metal part the hose attaches too. Thanks.
I think it was 1-1/2 or 1-3/4, Ill check it when I get home. I had to wrap electrical tape around it to get a tight fit, After a while I glued it in place with a 2 part epoxy.
bbrotz123 I stripped off about 3 inches of wire then wrapped it around the metal hose connector at the gun. On the back of the cabinet I removed a screw and scratched the paint off to bare metal then attached the wire to a ring terminal and put the screw through it. Another thing you could do is wrap the bare wire around the metal hose connector then at the other end of the wire use an alligator clip and clip it to the part your blasting or to the metal screen shelf in the cabinet.
Just wrapping it around the metal hose connector is enough? I have the same tank but I haven't used it yet so i'm just taking some safety precautions. Do you have your tank grounded to the house then or no? Thanks for replying fast! Also I'm thinking about buying a rubber mat to stand on as well.
bbrotz123 Yeah just wrap one end around the metal hose connector that connects to the gun then the other end of the wire to the metal wire shelf, the part your blasting, or to a screw on the cabinet. Harbor freight also has some of those mats, I use them.
I used a 12V 5A power supply (like the kind you would have for a laptop) to power the LEDs and the shaker motor. Just cut the connector off the end and remove some insulation and there will be a red and a black wire.
I was thinking of one of these to save on black beauty material but after all that I think ill just blast it out side and let it fly where it may.......
+AwakeDude911 I agree with you, the cabinets work great once you get the bugs fixd, but it takes time and money. That's why I made the video, hopefully it will save others from wasting as much time and money as I did.
Your right, the only problem was the media I had was too large for the gun I was using...At 40psi it wouldn't carry it through the gun. I bought the media from a local blasting company that uses the huge nozzles to blast car frames etc. It worked but the media turned to dust after some time. I still have it in my cabinet though. It was super cheap, like $10 for a 40lb bag but good media.
WhiteHatCinemas Yes, It's a shaker motor, you can buy them from other blast suppliers for 10x the price. If you have a good enough compressor you can also use a pneumatic shaker.
the gallons of compressor means nothing. your 3.2 hp compressor is smaller than mine and mine is a 25 gal tank. big tank with tiny motor and probably like 7 scfm is just barely on the edge of making that cabinet work. i like the mods you made but dont show your compressor to new people as an example of a good compressor. that things a run of mill home depot piece of junk. my 5 hp 25 gal has 12 scfm and it barely will keep up with my cabinet
Thanks for the comments. All I know is that I can run non-stop at 100psi, works fine for what I need. Maybe your gun has a bigger nozzle? I'm using the nozzle that came with it which is a 3/16".
I will call your bluff if youd like to take the challenge of making a 5 min video showing your pressure regulator on video zoom in so we can see it. Tape your gun trigger in closed position and lets see how your 3.2 jobber does. I know its an ok compressor, but its not near enough because i run 2 compressor at same time put together and my cabinet uses every bit and compressors never cut off i have 20 cfm with both running. Id bet your "non stop" is more like 5 mins and wait for catch up then go again, but a video of pressure reg will prove it. As soon as your on the gun more than a min, that thing is pushing its limit barely scrubbing 40 psi meanwhile your over at the cabinet thinkin to yourself its 100 psi...nope. been there, done that. I promise you hp and tank size means nothing, cfm and scfm are only important figure on the tag. And id bet yours is something like 9 at 40psi and 7 at 90 psi. Cabinets can easily consume 14 cfm. You need like 2 put together. These days the big trend for the big stores is to sell them based on hp and tank size which the marketing is definately working because its funny but those 2 same fields are what you mentioned in your video...never the scfm. Used to never see those numbers in an ad yrs ago. They would mentio volts and cfm back in the day. Google it to check my facts. Do a search and ask why compressors are now rated in tank size and hp and why they used to be rated different. Interesting what you will find
Thanks for the comment. I agree with you on the ratings. I remember reading before I bought my compressor that the ratings were inflated purposely. I'm in the middle of a restoration project right now but when I get time I'll make the video. Your probably right about that as I have never watched the regulator while I was blasting.
I tried making a video last night but dropped my phone in the middle of it and broke the screen. I set the regulator at 100PSI, strapped the gun trigger all the way down with a zip tie and let it go....In a short time the regulator pressure began dropping, once it hit 90PSI the compressor kicked on and the pressure began to rise again, back to 100 in about two minutes. So, the compressor and cabinet will maintain 90PSI...I know theres a way to calculate the actual CFM's but haven't looked it up. I did time a complete fill from an empty tank to 140PSI took 8 mins and 15 seconds.
@@michaelcollins1899 most compressors here in australia used to be rated in cfm and hp with tank capacity but now seem to be rated in hp and free air delivery with tank capacity. I can't seem to find a cfm to fad conversion as some tools are rated in cfm what fad is equivalent?
For those who don't have 12v power supplies and fancy vibrators... You'll have to figure out exact details on your own, so don't start squawking here until you first apply a little brain juice to the problem, BUT... 1) Go out (unless you already have one) and get a cheap, 1/4 sheet palm sander (the square one). 2) Make a couple "z" shaped sheet metal pieces about 5 "long, APPROXIMATELY 1/2"×1/2"×1/2" bends (you'll have to tweak the two bends for your sander) and an "L" shaped piece about 4" long. The sander pad will slide into the brackets. Make the first bend just long enough to allow the sander to slide in. It needs to be snug. 3) Pop rivet the two long brackets, vertically, just wide enough apart to take the pad of the sander between, then mount the L shaped "stop" bracket at or just below the bottom line of the two vertical brackets, horizontally, at the bottom of the two verticals. It doesn't have to be as long as the verticals are apart. It's just a stop. It works great and you can stil use the sander as designed when not sandblasting. *NOTE* If you're not smart enough to figure out how to do this without coming back and complaining, you're probably not smart enough to be working on projects, anyway. LOL. Go figure it out. It works great.
@@PaintHerWhite It was intended, at the time, with humor because most everyone IS smart enough (but, there are those who simply complain about everything, no matter how simple). But thats not the actual point. So, people also shouldn't be over sensitive and take everything said with such a stoic serious tone. It probably didn't stand the test of time as it was intended as an immediate response to some other comments. Mia culpa... Apologies to anyone offended. The mindset was in response to a number of needles, negative comments. No intentions to hurt anyone's feelings. :D. Let's aaaall play nice. Okay? I'm so sorry. :)
big, big help, thanks. My 2¢: The LED light strips are too messy a solution, and a ton of dust will get behind the tape. Go with some kinda small fluorescent tube like a cheep desk lamp type thing. How this video has any thumbs down is beyond me! Great video! Thanks for the ideas

Thanks for this video, you made a comment about air pressure, and that may be one of my problems, my air was at 110 lbs. I will try 80 first thing tomorrow.
Happy tp help. Yeah if its too high you'll turn your blast media into dust.

Thank you so much Brad, for sharing your mods. VERY helpful!
Great blaster info. Thanks for sharing!
Happy to help
Thanks for your helpful video. I have used most of your ideas on my own HF blast cabinet and they definitely help.
Great video, you did a good job on making this a useful tool
awesome video.
I have an air operated palm sander to vibrate my cabinet it works great. Nice video. Thanks for the other Tips.

Great idea, how much air does the sander use?
I bet that works much better than what I'm using.
Nice...thank you from your friends at How2Wrench...
Great video! Dust Deputy is something I didnt know about. Thank you.
+Craig Darpino No problem man, glad I could help!
I had a strip of 5630 leds .. saw your led strip light idea, did it to my cabinet it lights it up! great idea,
+scottk900 Thanks, glad it worked out for you. Those LED strips come in handy for a variety of things. I had them left over from a backlit projector screen I made, check it out under my vids.
wow awesome pretty detailed thank you so much for taking your time in making this video and teaching us new to sandblasting.
Jake Gilton
You're welcome dude!

Thanks, those LEDs work really well at eliminating shadows, I'm still using them. Hope it works just as well for you!
WOW great job VERY impressed with your work & great info too, your a big help when I set mine up. Thanks
Neat. I thought about getting one of these HFBC for small projects. I knew I would have to mod it but now that I look what you had to do with it. It might be tool much work for what I be doing. Great video btw.
David Young
Thanks for the compliments. Check out my other video, I made a much better dust collection system. It takes a few mods before these cabinets will work well. Good luck
BradK Okay I will.
So what type of engineer are you? Lol. Nice videos, thanks!
Great info! Cheers
oh and btw, im running 2 compressors t together so i now have 18 scfm and 45 gals. they actually cycle on and off during blasting. my original setup would run constant and i had to stop every min for about 30 secs to catch up
Marc Johnson
Nice, Glad it worked out for you!
Very useful info about ingenious mods.
👍
Kathryn Evans
Thanks, I appreciate the compliments!
you're a pretty calm dude, to have SO much talent.. 😃 nice.
Thanks for the compliments.
If your interested in the dust collection system check out my other video...I upgraded to something that works better and cost less.
ruclips.net/video/iwuDRh7ALis/видео.html
+BradK i SURE WILL check it out. thanks a lot !
I used a half round conduit clamp with a self tapping sheet metal screw.
BradK thanks for the into
Hey dude, really like the review.
Looking at buying one myself & found your vid the best of all I've watched.
Thanks for the time you took &, I'll be using most, if not all your mods.
Rotas australis
Your welcome, that's why I made this video to help others avoid all the frustration I went through.
Hell yeah! Free stuff is always good. 18SCFM holy crap, that's at least twice what I'm putting out, probably more.
Well, its also 2 compressors but one is 115 v and one is 220 so its kinda nice for me cause no tripped breaker
Really nice setup. Well done.
Great mods. I'm going to try the same.
They will make a big difference. Before I fixed mine I spent more time just trying to get it to work than I did blasting. I almost got rid of it because it was so bad.
Awesome, helpful tips that actually work
thanks for the video. the vibration motor was a great idea.
john sims No problem, I know how frustrating these cabinets can be when they're not working right. Hopefully this video will help...
Good video man. Did you have to modify the siphon tube on the hausfeld gun? Thanks
Not at first but later I went to a heavier media and drilled a hole in the side of the siphon hose close to the gun. It reduces clogging.
This is a great video! Thank you for taking the time to post it. What is the water separator for? How does that work and where do I buy it if it’s needed?
Megan Gentry
Thanks for the compliments.
Great I enjoyed it
Nice setup and great vid! One question with regards to your media vibration motor? Is that just agitating the media? Thanks
Yeah it shakes the hopper and helps keep the media flowing. Otherwise the media sticks to the walls of the hopper as they are not steep enough.
Nice! Thanks!
How did you attach the vibration motor tp the underside? Also when you soldered the LED lights did you just use wire to connect them?
got mine figured out. cant believe nobody else is doing it and its super easy...i drilled hole at lowest point, put tube thru hole from the outside. then drilled another hole just below left glove and put tube back into cabinet and made it into a gravity suction...no more stupid tube with holes and no suction and constant running compressor for no reason. id like to know who invented the tube theory and shove it up their , well ,you know the rest....anyway i had 2 identical pieces to blast. i did one with original suction setup and it was 15 mins to finish it...after i converted it to gravity suction, i did the other piece which was the same exact piece in 4 minutes !!! the flow was so strong , i had to turn my regulator down 15 psi . so basically, im running material at a lower psi than the suction will even operate on and i have 2x the flow still...not to mention half the electric bill for my poor compressor running 11 mins extra per piece.
Very nice, got any pictures or video?
Michael collins do have your set in a tut, written down?
Maybe a typo, didnt understand the question
It was a typo, sorry about that. do you have a tutorial of your set up; or a write up?
No but i need to do a vid of the modified version. Super easy and constant flow. Will post here
Great tips. Thanks for the video.
Kelly Meacham
Your welcome, hope they help.
i used a engine compartment vent for a boat it just runs inline with the hose workes great n cheep to
Raymond J
Really? I've wondered if those would work. I changed mine and now use a leaf blower and a dyson multi stage cyclone canister. It works really well, I made a video on it as well.
Which marine blower are you using?
i dont know what it came off of its just a platic tube with the fan inside n i put a pantyhose stoking over the end works great lol
It works better...The other thing that helped a lot with clogs was to drill a small hole in the pickup hose right next to the gun.
that vibrator / shaker is a good idea
watahyahknow
Thanks, it makes a big difference. Like one guy said he uses a palm sander he got used for $5, works even better.
yeah if seen that comment below but try to fit an orbital sander to the side of the funnel of a desk type blasting cabinet , that pillow vibrator is tiny and works good enough without shaking the glass beads intoo dust
found them on aliexpress and there about 3 euro (4 dollar i think)
cyclone filter is on there too though you have to look for the biggest size (19 / 30 vs 50 cm)
was looking at vacuum cleaner motors 1200 watt for 20 euro
think im going to make my own stationairy and dampened vac system for the whole shop that does both course and fine material prolly put in a restriction so the suction is low for the blast cabinet
watahyahknow
Check out my other video, I changed my dust collection system and it works much better...I'm using a leaf blower with a dyson v6 canister, works really well!
David Smith
Thanks for the compliments.
David Smith
No problem...I made a better dust collection system...link is in the description. Thanks
David Smith
I screwed it directly to the bottom of the hopper.
Awesome man thanks.
I use a LED light string inside the cabinet that I cut in different lengths and soldered together that works pretty well.
What model compressor? I will only be doing small parts, sprockets, wheel hubs, etc. And don't wanna break the bank on a huge compressor. Thanks in advance!
Banggood has dust collectors SN25T8 Industrial Extractor Dust Collector 8+ bucks.
does it actually function better with the mods as in removing paint and rust? or are the mods just for fixing annoyances?
Both but mostly for removing paint and rust. Before the mods I spent more time trying to keep it working than I did blasting.
Brad, great ideas! One question: How did you attach the 12V hopper shaker to the underside? Sheet metal screws or velcro? Thanks.
NJ Appalachian Trail Hiker
Sheet metal screws
Damn good deal on that compressor!
i've found many 60 gals for sale on craigslist for 300
Bad A$$ dude! Nice job! Keep it short and to the point.
+David Hanson Thanks David, I appreciate it!
Are you using the pick up tube or just running the braided hose into the media?
Sorry for the later reply old computer died and I just bought a new one. I modified the base of the cabinet and have a pickup screen at the bottom...Works much better than the pickup tube...I also drilled a small hole in the pickup tube near the gun, it reduces clogging. Still using the blast cabinet, just a few days ago I ran it for an hour or so.
good job
Thanks, hope it helps. I went through a lot of work just trying to make this thing reliable in the beginning. At first I spent more time messing with it than I did blasting.
Awesome video. I had no idea shop modding was such a thing. With that being said I cannot find the amount of media I should be running in this thing. I will be using it for very small projects, but still want to buy enough media to have a continuous flow of media. Anyone?
Cyle Thomas
Thanks, I get my media from a local place, I use medium grit crushed glass. I think I paid 15 bucks for a 20lb bag. Harbor Freight also sells it in small bags.
Awesome tips. Thanks
camptriplec
Thanks for the compliments!
Good video, I'm thinking of buying this cabinet. How tall did you build your table? From the HF webpage it looks like a 36" tall counter will make the gloves a little high for someone who is 5'6".
J Gollihugh
Thanks, I actually built another table for my cabinet. My table now is 35" tall, I'm 5'11 and its just right.
Thanks for the response, I realized I mis-typed (and corrected) My current bench is at 36" which seems like it will be too tall. I'm planning on building a 32" tall bench. I think the 4" drop should work well.
J Gollihugh
Your welcome...And yeah, I did the same thing. After I built that table I had to stand on a small step stool. Finally I built a shorter one.
Excellent video! Though I didnt catch the name brand blaster gun you picked up on ebay. What was that name?
RJ Schoonover
Thanks...the gun is a
Cambell Hausfeld
It's the vibrating blaster now. What gun would you suggest for soda blasting? Did you put wheels on too?
+Screenguy3 Yeah it works much better than it did before all the mods.
I've never done soda blasting, but the gun I have should work for it. I've also seen small soda blast kits for decent prices online.
HI WERE YOU BUY THIS MACHINE & THE NAME ???
THANKS
Any tips on how to keep the screen clearer for longer ?
Instead of buying the film I just buy clear packing tape. Make sure you don't buy the cheap stuff though or it will rip in small pieces when you try to replace it. It lasts a while but yeah its a pain no matter what I have tried.
When I change the tape I just remove the window completely, takes about 15 minutes or so. Others have added wing nuts with the screws glued in place on the inside to make removing and installing it easier.
What exactly is the vibrating motor brand?
dude awesome.. thanks for the info
jacksprrow
Your welcome, hope it helps.
I now have a better dust collection system using a leaf blower and a dyson cyclone. Works even better.
Here's the video:
ruclips.net/video/iwuDRh7ALis/видео.html
Is the power supply attached to the switch to provide power to the lights and vibration motor?
Also what switch housing is that?
@@bgriff2517 There are two switches-one for the lights and the other for the vibration motor. They are mounted in a plastic ABS conduit box I bought at home depot.
BradK ok thanks. Did you have to cut the end of the power supply cord and split the wires to wire it to the switches?
@@bgriff2517 Yes, easy to do.
Take the positive from the Power supply and run it to 1 terminal on each switch.
Then on one switch run the wire to the LED's then to the ground of the power supply.
On the other switch run the wire to the shaker motor then to the ground of the power supply.
BradK awesome thanks again. I bought the same vibrating motor. Got the same led lighting but mine has the 3m backing with tape. Power supply looks like your standard computer power supply.
Good tips and explanations of the implementation of them. So how did they hold up a couple years later? Take care, Clay
Texasknowhow
Thanks, still working well, not perfect but 100X better than before the mods.
Texasknowhow
Yep, been there done that. Controlling the dust really is the most frustrating part of these cabinets. I posted a vid in the description that uses the leaf blower/dyson canister. I've got the same setup now but I'm using a cheaper blower.
As far as the lighting goes the 5050 LED strips work great.
Cool, thanks Brad.
How did you attach the shaker motor to the cabinet? Is one motor enough or would it be better with one on each side of the hopper?
I used 2 sheet metal screws on opposite corners of the clamshell case. One works ok, but yeah, one on each side would be even better.
+BradK Thanks!
Well done!
Hey Brad I can't seem to find the type of valve you used on the back of your cabinet, would there be another name for that beside gate valve?
Chris Lay
m.harborfreight.com/4-inch-dust-collector-air-flow-control-97497.html?Fnot%20provided
BradK, thank you so much. Greatly appreciated!!
Chris Lay,
Your welcome. One thing I should add is to be sure you put a screen or filter between the valve and the cabinet. If you don't do that the valve will get media in it making it really hard to adjust.
BradK, I will be sandblasting handgun slides. What type of media should I use?
Chris Lay
Not sure, I bet a really fine glass media would work well.
imagine that, a piece of junk sold by horror fright. this thing has more modifications than the millennium falcon. good job on making it work, though. personally, i need something a bit more turn-key, lol.
ryan barker
Yep, lesson learned.
For "turn key" that will cost you at least $500.
@@LBCAndrew i'm sure that's true, but sometimes it's worth spending more, especially when you're not particularly mechanically inclined like i'm not.
have you had any issues with the media not coming out of the gun?
The firestick Android
Yes that's a common problem and could be caused by a few things.
-Moisture and humidity
-Worn gun ceramic nozzle
-Media with large pieces of foreign material
-Line clogging
I've had all of the above happen to me. I fixed a few of the problems by straining the media through a fine screen or replacing it when it got too dirty.
Changing the ceramic nozzle,
And drilling a small hole in the feed tube right next to the gun.
Sometimes the gun tries to pull too much media through the tube, drilling the small hole helps it to breathe better and made a big difference.
BradK awesome ill try ty
BradK where exactly is the hole drilled? In the metal tube on the gun where the siphon tube attaches? If so, does the hole go above the braided hose thru the metal or thru both the flexible hose and metal part the hose attaches too. Thanks.
What size pvc elbow did you connect to the side of the cabinet?
I think it was 1-1/2 or 1-3/4, Ill check it when I get home. I had to wrap electrical tape around it to get a tight fit, After a while I glued it in place with a 2 part epoxy.
How did you ground the gun exactly? I don't want to get shocked!
bbrotz123 I stripped off about 3 inches of wire then wrapped it around the metal hose connector at the gun.
Also I'm thinking about buying a rubber mat to stand on as well.
bbrotz123
Yeah just wrap one end around the metal hose connector that connects to the gun then the other end of the wire to the metal wire shelf, the part your blasting, or to a screw on the cabinet.
Harbor freight also has some of those mats, I use them.
How did you wire up the shaker motor?
I used a 12V 5A power supply (like the kind you would have for a laptop) to power the LEDs and the shaker motor. Just cut the connector off the end and remove some insulation and there will be a red and a black wire.
I want to purchase one of these would it fit a 16 inch barrel
Edwin Gomez
I don't think it would, and if it did it would be a tight fit and frustrating to blast.
Anyone else have problems with the media drain plug on the bottom? Mine doesn't want to come out.
Running 80PSI is just crushing the glass Beads better off just getting crushed glass your preaseure should behalf maybe 45-50 max
It was super cheap, like $10 for a 40lb bag but good media.
aka you put a vibrator in the bottom....?
WhiteHatCinemas
Yes, It's a shaker motor, you can buy them from other blast suppliers for 10x the price. If you have a good enough compressor you can also use a pneumatic shaker.
im sorry but i dont understand your question.
Me likey
the gallons of compressor means nothing. your 3.2 hp compressor is smaller than mine and mine is a 25 gal tank. big tank with tiny motor and probably like 7 scfm is just barely on the edge of making that cabinet work. i like the mods you made but dont show your compressor to new people as an example of a good compressor. that things a run of mill home depot piece of junk. my 5 hp 25 gal has 12 scfm and it barely will keep up with my cabinet
Top marks for using a sex toy as a shaker motor!
Don't be an asshole.

It was intended, at the time, with humor because most everyone IS smart enough (but, there are those who simply complain about everything, no matter how simple). But thats not the actual point. So, people also shouldn't be over sensitive and take everything said with such a stoic serious tone. It probably didn't stand the test of time as it was intended as an immediate response to some other comments. Mia culpa...
