'Homage to Maria Callas' is a collection of beloved French and Italian operatic masterpieces performed by Angela Gheorghiu, the defining diva of this century. The programme is inspired by the career and recordings of Maria Callas, the greatest diva of the last century. The arias are shared favourites of both Callas and Gheorghiu, and Angela's new recording demonstrates once again her extraordinary vocal and emotional range.
Angela Gheorghiu said recently, "Callas was original in everything she did; she was a phenomenon. In every performance she gave her all. She was the most wonderful painter and you can always hear exactly the right colour in her voice. Just hearing her sound, you understand all the power or fragility of her emotions. That's a rare talent and a great gift." Gheorghiu continued, "EMI was her record label and it's mine too. It feels like a family".
Recorded at London's iconic Abbey Road Studios in London and in New York, the repertoire of Gheorghiu's first studio recital in six years (during which time she recorded several complete operas, including a multi-award-winning Madama Butterfly), shows her versatility in lyric, spinto and mezzo roles, with each of which she feels a strong emotional connection.

LOVE THIS....this piece is VERY difficult! It appears a few people in the comments forgot about that. Also, OF COURSE she would be lip-synching in a music video haha. You can't do this live it's too tricky and wouldn't work well at all. The recording is live and its the same process most artists use to film for a music video. I love it because it's so classic and elegant. We need more music videos like these. Thank you Warner Classics!
Lindsay Solonycze When it's sung on stage it's live without a microphone. Most opera singers do record live. It's in our training to be able to do it.
Opera singers record live all the time in this day of live broadcasts and DVDs and streaming videos. This is likely not a "live" [i.e., recorded at a concert or other venue in a single take without editing] but a studio recording. If you think that opera singers cannot do such truly live recording then you know nothing about the history of recorded opera or about the training of opera singers.
For those, like I, who know little to nothing about opera, what is it about this aria that makes it particularly difficult?

A fantastic singer. The song is difficult to get right and she does. Strangely enough the song is beautiful by itself, way too powerful for the rest of the opera, La Wally.

Beautiful singing but hard to watch, annoying video. The continuous movement of the camera and the extreme close-up shots are very annoying and distracting. She is the artist, the camera operator should just document it and not try to compete. Not the camera should move but the object. Please put the camera on a tripod and leave it alone.

A videoclip for an opera aria just to feed the commercial diva's ego! Amazing voice on the middle, but the low register is very forced, unnatural. The comparison with Maria Callas makes no sense. Gheorghiu's career is mostly based on the fancy dresses she wears during concerts: minimum 3. She sings the same 2-3 roles and the same 2-3 arias and songs all the time; not to mention the small voice she has; one cannot hear her in the theatre unless she is has a microphone. This is the right example of a consumed artist, that keeps on singing because of her fame; a purely commercial personality that has been selling image rather than music, for at least 20 years. It's a shame....there were some potential.
