interview and excerpts of "Caravan" (01:48) and "Patricia" (06:17) w/ Milcho Leviev p, Tony Dumas b, Carl Burnett d (and Laurie Pepper) source: tv.nrk.no/seri...
WOW! Such a great video! My Father was good friends (he's even say best friends) with Art. We spent a lot of time with Art in the studio, at clubs and at his house when I was young. This video brings me back to my childhood. Art left us way too soon... Both Art and my Father passed away at the age of 56 just six years apart, which also happened to be their age difference. Kindred spirits I guess.
My comments often start with "Wow" but this is not enough for a musician that I love so much and I realize never saw him live or in film. I am in awe. I should have search for him long before...
I love every era of Art Pepper. His playing in his revival stage, as demonstrated here, is ferocious! You would never think it was the same player, his attack, approach, articulation are NOTHING like they are on "...Meets the Rhythm Section". I'd love to know if that was a deliberate metamorphosis or if it was caused naturally by doing time and the pain of getting clean etc
He was heavily influenced by Coltrane, too much in my opinion. The beautiful lyricism of the 1950's is missing. His stuff with Jack Montrose is my favorite.
His sound changed a good bit too. I play alto and the way he plays on "Meets the Rhythm Section" is just insane. There's this vibrato-induced "lilt" to his phrasing I don't think I've ever heard another player pull off.
Lilt is a good word from a standup bass player that loves Art Pepper forever. Like he made clear, the ability to swing is everything. Hence, Paul Chambers!
@@Eifila Beautiful version on "The trip"... I cannot analyse the chord progression to be frank, but it immediately popped up to my mind. And you know, jazzmen use chord sequences for different melodies. And you just confirmed he was familiar with the song (The summer knows) :-) I'm open to a more in depth analysis.
Well noticed: there is a semitones descent, like in "A sentimental mood" and many other tunes, in both themes, says a friend pianist. And what is absolutely sure is that the feeling, a superior one, is quite the same when Art Pepper plays these two ballads. ;-)
I love Art Pepper and listened to it all the time. However, he did not hear the performance after his return. But I was wrong. Listening to it now, I know it's a great performance. Not West Coast style.

That is awesome! Except for their early passing.
Wow that's amazing. Was your father also a musician? How did they became friends?
Thanks for sharing!
His tone and playing is like a dagger in the heart. So much suffering and beauty.
Love love Art Pepper, Patricia and Walking out Blues are the bees knees.
Art from the heart. I'm not sure anybody gave more of their soul to us.... Hope he's playing with Chet somewhere right now.
The last song is so full of emotion.
I would love to hear it all.
Stunning Genius - As a composer and of course a a player...

Art Pepper, the best Saxplayer of the World
Genius, absolute total genius.
Thanks for the upload... A privilege to be able to see Art perform live. A little note: I believe the tune at 06:17 is Patricia.
rather than 'My Laurie" indeed, thanks for the correction ;-)

The turning point was in his San Quentin years: ruclips.net/video/jn8VzO-KbfQ/видео.html

Montrose is underrated on tenor. Surf Ride!@@johnlindstrom9994
My Favorite also, So explosive unbridled free from restraints.
I love his performances very much .
This is brilliant thanks for posting it.
Probably best alto ever!
I ❤ Art
Only one Art Pepper as only one Jimi Hendrix and one Bob Dylan
Like Bird,he had his own sound.Allso a great composer.

Superb.
The great Art Pepper. Fantastic. Thanks. Milcho Leviev dead maybe six months
Beautiful person :)
Listen I think he was one of the best jazz musicians of the 20th century, but I don't think he was! He did some really bad shit in his younger days.
👏🏾👏🏾

Jazzman..🎷
😃💙🌸🌱
The intro to My Laurie @ 06:17 is all taken from "The Summer of 1942"
other ballad played by Art, ruclips.net/video/geaUeW7cZTw/видео.html , but not really the same intro IMO ;-)
