Can Stomach Ulcers Lead to Stomach Cancer?

- The cause is still a medical mystery but each year more than 20,000 people are diagnosed with stomach cancer. Health experts say there could be a link between stomach cancer and stomach ulcers.
Dr. Mark Bloomston, surgical oncologist on staff at Lee Memorial Health System, says stomach ulcers affect roughly 4 million people each year. It usually starts off as a burning pain in the upper abdomen. “Pain is always a big red flag for us. Anytime anybody has pain, particularly upper abdominal pain that may or may not be related to what you’re eating that’s certainly a red flag for us.”
While the most common risk factors for stomach ulcers are family history, smoking and large amounts of caffeine, he says stress may also play a role. “There is an association with a type of personality where the typical type A personality of high revving, high stress, high active patients may have a higher risk of ulcers.”
Dr. Bloomston says if a patient has an ulcer that doesn’t respond to treatment it could be a red flag. Patients with stomach ulcers experience similar symptoms to those with stomach cancer, such as stomach pain and difficulty eating. While it’s unclear what causes stomach cancer, health experts say there’s a link in the bacteria found in ulcers. “There can be an association with ulcers in that there’s an association in the bacteria that causes ulcers,” said Dr. Bloomston.
If a patient has repeat ulcers, health experts may want to do an upper endoscopy to find out why. “There are other causes of ulcers that may not have anything to do with the stomach at all. You may have a tumor in the pancreas that’s making the body secrete too much acid in the stomach,” said Dr. Bloomston.
If a patient suspects that have an ulcer or possibly stomach cancer it’s important they see their doctor.

@@majorvont5473 Thank you, she had dementia, but no stomach pain & no other symptoms apart from the fact she was skin & bone, at the hospital they were going to give her four pints of blood as she had become anaemic, which is when they found the huge tumour....Best wishes x

I've never had an ulcer but was told I had a tiny bit of H. Pylori in a biopsy so they treated it. I've had the twisting burning pain in my upper left abdomen. It started the day I had a colonoscopy. I was put on a PPI for life because I was told I had to keep my stomach acids as low as possible because of the risk. Yet, I have never had an ulcer to date. I had surgery 8 weeks ago. I had a hysterectomy where they discovered everything they removed was covered in tumors. Since then I have gone downhill. I've lost 17% of my body weight, I have lost my appetite to the point the thought of food makes me sick and I am extremely tired. Not your regular tired. This is something out of this world! I now know the difference between tired from a long week and pure exhaustion! I've also developed right-side pain. I thought I needed a new mattress but I don't. I thought a coil broke or something because it feels like it. But only on my right side.

For the last 2 years I've told my doctors, even my GI that I'm convinced I have stomach ulcers. I had a gnawing stomach pain, extreme nausea when I had an empty stomach, etc.
They always rolled their eyes at me.
Just had an EGD Monday and they found a DOZEN ulcers in my stomach and duodenum.
I'm shocked they didnt do the H. Pylori test! Wow! That went on long! Were they worried about cancer?

Then the doctor that finally found the ulcers did ALL the tests. HP, cancer, other lesser known bacteria, so on.
He hasn't been able to find a cause for my ulcers... And now I'm starting to get them in my mouth and throat. (Like canker sores, they are just tons of ulcers that keep popping up)...
But still no answers.
Some of the ulcers started to bleed and there was some "precancerous" cells in another area (not an ulcer)...
@@NewAccountWhoDis The gnawing is unmistakable though. It literally feels like a hole is being burned through your stomach to back. It's horrific. I've had completely natural labor several times and I'd rather go thru that than ulcer pain. Getting infusions now, they help a little with the nausea.

@@theredfaceofficial Really depends on the day if I'm being honest. Sometimes I'm only in pain for a brief few mins, sometimes it lasts for hours.
Yesterday I was in so much pain I could barely breathe. In the mid to upper part of my stomach and it feels like I'm being ripped thru from the front thru to my back.
Nothing made it feel better.
Other days I only have extreme nausea that can be relieved by eating a piece of bread. Usually happens when I go to long on an empty stomach.
But still having issues... And the doctors basically gave up because they couldn't find a reason.
They thought it could be NSAID use but after my total Colectomy I didn't take any medications for months and my issues got worse. So they just gave up trying to figure it out and left me with my pain...
I’m interested because my husband spent a week in the hospital about 5 months ago and they said he had an ulcer. They scoped him and gave him antibiotics and monitored him and treated his pain. He took home antacids and antibiotics to take for about a month and he felt better. Then his symptoms came back, he thought it was the ulcer again but this time antibiotics didn’t work and he went to the hospital again and they said hr has stomach cancer and it’s already spread to the lining and lymph.. was he perhaps misdiagnosed or did it develop into cancer? He’s being treated for his cancer at the same hospital that treated him for the ulcer so I’m sure if they did miss something they are not going to come out and say it, but he was diagnosed by a different doctor at the same hospital. I’m curious .. however I’m afraid if I look into it and possibly sue for malpractice that they will refuse to treat him for his cancer… but I’m not sure if they can do that either. I just wish I knew what to do.

@@Vane.vanessa04 he actually passed away August 5 2023. When I wrote this comment, he was still living and doing well with the treatment. He was treated for 9 months before being passed so basically almost a million dollars got him 3 more months to live.
Am suffering, I have ulcer before, if I get medicine from hospital the pain and other symptoms stop but now, nothing. It just getting worse and no good hospital in my country Nigeria. And the little hospital here cause too much.
