This is the method i was taught, but i have never treated anyone who can complete 25 single leg heel raises. I never could either...lol i use the number of 12 for grade 5 in my general population. The only athletes we get are high school kids. I think the dif between 4 and 5 is not realistic, 3 is spot on with being able to reach the target or perform the motion according to its function, but 4 should be maybe 10 heel raises and 5 would be 12+ raises with full lift. My opinion 😊

That is a good observation. When learning to perform a physical therapy skill it is important to work from a common standard, which for this test is 25 reps for a 5/5. Having said that, when you begin practicing clinically you realize that many patients are unable to perform the test consistent with the standards and/or are unable to get into the proper test position for one reason or another. Therefore modifications are made, as long as it is properly documented so what was done is clear then no problem. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

Hello! If the participant has a healthy ankle, do they need to undergo assessments for all grades or just Grade 5? Thanks!

Typically we go through active motion once and then start with the grade 5 test, if the patient fails then move on to grade 4 and below. We hope that is helpful and thanks for watching.
