@@cjward_24 Could it just be that Ruby was cursed with the Lady because she read the letters, and the Doctor was punished by death/no longer existed because he broke the circle

The Doctor went on his own 73 yards journey in another splintered timeline.

Bemuses my why people want every little thing explained. Just enjoy it and roll with the mystery.

People are still thinking of the show in terms of sci-fi when it's transitioned to more of a fantasy.
Sci-fi tends to have mechanistic cause and effect plots where "x is caused by y because z". Fantasy/supernatural fiction doesn't need such a foundation. Magic and fairy tales have their own rules and they're not always comprehensible.

@@tmage23 True enough, though 14 signposted this well in 'Wild Blue Yonder' that he'd let the supernatural in.

By touching the fairy circle, the doctor got sucked into the curse, replacing Mad Jack. Also, it is likely that Ruby is the one who waits, as the Toymaker said the only thing he could do upon meeting it was to run. It is likely that "73 yards" is one of her "waits" (Assuming that the one who waits is a literal title), and that she has previously saved the doctor through altering time by waiting to her end (like in Boom, she may have changed time off-screen, or possibly in Space Babies the doctor mentioned being afraid of the Bogeyman for some reason; both moments which have similar stakes or atmospheres to the beginning of 73 Yards). Because of all this, I believe Ruby made the initial curse through a paradox, as the lady watching (later revealed to be Ruby) is theorized to be the "caster" by the people in the pub.
