    On the topic of the Streamer mode, It's actually pretty widely argued that the original songs fit BETTER than the licensed songs. So either way you're not gonna be missing out. (And if you're curious, the song that's meant to play against the first boss is 1,000,000 by Nine Inch Nails)

      I would actually disagree for one point only. The game was made first and foremost with the licensed tracks in mind. You can see this with a lot of the transitions between song segments being a bit sudden and jarring with the original tracks, unlike the licensed tracks where it flows smoothly from part to part.

    I love when CGI tech is used to emulate hand-drawn aesthetics. This isn't the absolute best I've seen (it's not as perfect an emulation as ArcSys manages, it doesn't pull together techniques into a cohesive style like _Chainsaw Man),_ but it's still dang good. Look at the lip flaps! Look at the smears!
    A detail I noticed framing through a couple animations: A lot of motions are animated on a mixture of ones and twos. Like, one pose will be held for one frame, the next for two, then by one. Or one frame in a run cycle will be held for two frames, but everything else for only one. This feels like a compromise between the smoothness of CG and the limited animation techniques which make traditional animation feel like traditional animation.
    Additional style notes:
    8:35: Aside from the obvious "everything clangs together on the beat" bit, look at those glow effects. They're not Kirby dots, that's a more specific technique, but they definitely evoke some dotty thing that I don't know the name of!
    14:00: Look! Look at the "SNAP" in Chai's _idle animation._ This kind of style is so thoroughly integrated into the game's _everything._
    Whole video: Man, this has my tapping my foot. Even most rhythm games don't get that reaction.
    53:15: Oh my gosh, the music video credits in the corner, I love it.
    54:40: This part is self-explanatory, but I feel like this comment would be incomplete if I didn't mention it. And having an incomplete comment would be

    • @Volvagia1927

      I think this IS actually about as perfect an emulation as ArcSys manages, but it's also...not really aiming at ArcSys' "battle anime" aesthetic? This is DEFINITELY aiming at western cartoon aesthetics.

    • @octochan

      After some Googling, I think the effect is called Ben Day dots, but the first thing that came to mind was screentone

    • @timothymclean
      @timothymclean Год назад +1

      @@Volvagia1927 I mean, that's the target it's going for, but it's not going for it with the same specificity as ArcSys. There are plenty of things people might mean when discussing "Western cartoon aesthetics," from Mickey Mouse to The Simpsons to Steven Universe, but this doesn't really look like any of them. And the fact that everything's animated on ones and twos, with barely any limited animation techniques, really kills any claims that this matches ArcSys in terms of 2D fidelity.

    • @nahuel3433
      @nahuel3433 Год назад +3

      Both Chainsawman and Arc Sys have the benefit that they don't give completely player controlled camera and environment
      Like Arcsys gets its style by basically emulating classic sprite work of older fighting games. There is no way to recreate classic sprite work on a genre that couldn't use sprites in the first place because of its complete 3D movement.

    • @Valanway
      @Valanway Год назад +2

      @@Volvagia1927 It's especially good considering that ArcSys "cheats" as much as the possible can to get it to look as 2D Anime as possible. Hi-Fi Rush does not have such luxury to do camera tricks and model breaking. I actually like the way Tango does this more than ArcSys does it for Strive, at least (Xrd is a slightly different story)

    I thought Chai sounded familiar, and it turns out his VA is Robbie Daymond, who also did Prompto from FF15 and Akechi from P5. (And other obviously, but the voice he's putting on here I recognise the most as those two.)
    Also wow this game is styling as all hell. I'm not confident at my rhythm gaming, but just what I've seen here makes me wanna get it.
    Additionally, I imagine that there's some timing system running in the background that all objects are synced to trigger certain animations at certain points? That doesn't sound too hard to set up in concept - it'd be like a second animation frame-count that's paced to the music, and then objects follow that variable's increase.
    _That said_ if anything causes delay, like under increased load, that would be a problem, unless the beat frame-count is tied to audio playback, rather than graphics rendering.

    2:45: Nothing says "Trustworthy tech CEO" like a red-and-black trenchcoat over your dark business suit!
    I love this character design; it has a bit of flair to match the stylized, comic-book-y atmosphere, but it still looks like something someone would actually wear. It also makes Kale look sinister, without making him look like someone deliberately dressing as a supervillain. And, of course, the trenchcoat/suit combo gives the same institutional evil vibes as, say, Makima. And the logo on the back of his coat (which is just his initial) is just _(chef's kiss)_ for subtly implying the sort of vanity you'd need to name your company after yourself.
    4:15: I also love Rekka's character design. It's big, it's brawny, her name is Wrecker. I don't see as much in it as in Kale's, but it's a solid character design for the main villain's left-hand woman.
    19:40: I wonder if the tempo changes between any of the general gameplay tracks. If the beat is the same in every gameplay area, making animations that both look right and are timed right would be a lot easier.
    51:55: Of _course_ she gets a wrestler intro. I love it.
    6:00: I really want to wrongplay this to see what corner they had to cut to make the walkcycle fall on the beat. Is there a bit of input delay? Do you slide a bit before the walkcycle starts? Does the idle pose tween to an arbitrary point in the walkcycle? I don't see any sliding...
    8:00: RCAB
    9:00: Oh my god, of course there's procedural music in the combat.
    11:08: ...is it just me, or does that "1, 2, 3, go!" sound like something from Rhythm Heaven? Not sure if they're drawing on the same sound library or if there's just a limited number of ways to count beats into a rhythm game section.
    22:40: And let's face it, your robot arm isn't even that cool. The magnetic thingy you can turn into an axe is neat, but the arm looks like a hunk of junk.
    30:10, 31:40, 45:20: While this is emulating Western comic/cartoon aesthetics more than manga or anime, Chai gives off strong shonen protagonist vibes.
    50:45: Well, I guess not _that_ strong.
    If there's one criticism I have of Hi-Fi Rush, it's the particular level of self-awareness it has. It's at the level of a bad Joss Whedon knockoff, where all the genre tropes are lampshaded and that's it. No clever subversion or interesting reaction or anything. I wish it either didn't point out the video game mechanics, or found some _point_ for the lampshading.
    Oh! I didn't mention this anywhere, but I really like that the "defect" Kale was so insistent on avoiding was directly caused by him being careless with a "nobody's" "junk".

      I'm about halfway through this game and I agree with everything you said: it's *_stellar_* in the way it looks, sounds, and plays... but the writing really brings it down ever-so-slightly. In a way, it reminds me of _Sonic Colors_ -- there are some solid jokes, but the characters immediately spoil them by pointing out that a joke just happened and isn't _this_ guy dumb or isn't _that_ a cliché harf harf harf. The visual gags work a lot better, IMO (the bit with Korsica banging her head on doorframes had me actually laughing out loud).

    • @chriswest6988
      @chriswest6988 Год назад

      Unlike crypt of the necrodancer or a pure rhythm game, the main form of gameplay in this is, if you hit a button at any time, the corresponding action happens on the next beat. You'll always benefit from understanding the rhythm in both platforming and combat, and in combat you'll also do more damage for actually staying on it, but you can be off constantly and still succeed on normal in most situations.
      There are two exceptions where the game devolves into a pure rhythm game. Boss and elite enemy special attacks you can only parry and punish with a precisely timed sequence made up of 1-2 buttons, which are up to eight total inputs on up to like 16 beats. Then there are qte type things out of combat which can be a bit longer and more complex but don't punish you for failing and just let you do them over until they're right. There is an option to independently simplify both of these without changing other aspects of the game's difficulty.

While Shinji Mikami (who worked on Clover's God Hand and Directed Resident Evil for Capcom as well) would become associated more with horror. I heard that they brought a lot of former associates to work on Hi-Fi Rush so it makes sense that there's a lot of Viewtiful Joe/Okami/God Hand DNA in this game. Apparently this game was a dream of the director John Johannes who was trying to get this made before the first Evil Within came out. So we're also talking about someone who had very new ideas as a first time director!

    the way I'm feeling combat is something like Devil May Cry... but on beat.
    in retrospect, this might have always been the evolution of the stylish meter, just imagine playing like this at the beat of "Bury the Light" or "Devils Never Cry"

    I wish the Game Awards had the performance categorization to fit in anything from this game (seriously, they should have 6 categories for performance (Sole/Primary Playable Character, Secondary Playable Character + NPC, both genders), not the ONE that they do), but this is still very good work in that regard too.

    This is so cool - I watched the entire backlog of your Kingdom Hearts playlist a couple weeks ago and noted how one of the Org XIII fights felt very very rhythmic and *almost* "on beat", so I was thinking about how it would've been amazing if they *actually* had done that, making the fight sync up to the music through various tricks. And here is a game that basically does just that, but for all of it!

    Looking at the environment sync with music, sometimes in theatre, you make the sound queue have an embedded midi flag at the exact moment you want, and can trigger off of that flag whatever effects when you want relative after that, so even if some elements are out of sync or you want to add more effects later, it's just as simple as "see the flag, then wait x seconds, then go ahead"
    So I'm almost wondering if the environment is effectively "listening" to the music too, and the engineers could dynamically link the various elements in sub-groups to start their various reactions to the sync-flags. They'd even have the option to set different kinds of flags that different elements could listen to! I think that would give enough flexibility, and robustness to cover most effects, and not massively hinder performance

    At 20:07 you mentioned the programming behind syncing everything to the music, it would be simple to implement if you used an event driven framework (like the ones often used in games to detect input from various devices) to send out a "beat-event" and to have the other loaded objects in the scene listen for the event then respond to it via various methods i.e. doing a little animation or moving, the big challenge that I can spot with making it in general is having to have precise timing on all of your animations so that the programming behind it makes it seem seamless

    Regarding animation: I highly recommend looking at "Pizza Tower" for a short second. It looks like something done in MS Paint in 2003, but the actual fluidity displayed with the character that is added on top is just fun to watch and quite an example for how much animation matters even when the general art style feels dated or would be right out bad without it.
