I went to Prop Day on Saturday and this was by far the biggest standout in terms of uniqueness. The lineup this year was a bit bland with four of the six basically just being Bourbon County aged in different types of barrels. Though the port addition for the Angel’s Envy was unique. I think they should have at least one non traditional beer in the mix each year like a wheat wine or barleywine. A strong ale or quad would be pretty wild.
You and I agree 100% on having wheatwine or barleywine too. I will never understand why they aren't regularly doing those two and the coffee stout. Cheers!
I liked this one a great deal/. I enjoyed the subtle banana flavors. I do think the base is the better value for the price point. This reminded me of a banana fudge pop which I used to get as a kid. So I had a taste of nostalgia with this one. Great review. Cheers.
I totally remember those pops! Glad you enjoyed this one. I think because I had a much more banana-forward stout the day before this one seemed lacking.
~~~ When it comes to - ADD-JUNK - I'm usually in the subtlety and under do camp. I'm looking forward to trying this. The few Brewers who have tried Bananas all say it takes a tremendous amount to get the true banana flavor. Kudos for even trying LOL. Nice review. CHEERS ! ))))))))
Cracked this one open today and drank outside when temp was 46F. Could really smell the bananas. Banana flavor was more subtle, but very enjoyable. Very balanced IMHO. Glad I picked up more...not going to dwell on ratio of price/flavor.
I recorded a video that will go up Thursday where I rank them and I *tried* not to let the price influence my thoughts but it is hard for me not to factor that in somewhat. Glad you liked it!
Man, I gotta tell ya, this year is the first in 7 years of doing the whole line thing that I'm just not as hyped.. I'm not sure why, but maybe that gangs reviews will get me hyped... 🍻!!!
Don't need hype for this stuff. I've been buying it for almost 10 years now on Black Friday. It's a bit pricey but since I only buy it once a year, its defiantly worth it. Enjoy!!
They seem to be producing so much more of it for sure. I still see some of the stuff from last year sitting on shelves. Not the barleywine though haha.
Pretty much the same thoughts. For something called Bananas Foster…should come through more but as a whole, it’s a delicious beer just not what you’d expect. Cheers dude!
I wanted a ton of banana in this beer, and sadly I was let down. My bottle had quite a bit of cinnamon though which I really liked. All in all, this wasn't worth the price tag it came with for me.
Def. Want to get that banana foster. We still have to stand in the cold down here to get a shot of the good variants. If you aren’t in the first 10-20 people your probably not getting the better ones.
The cinnamon is very forward (not my fav), but not over done. Agree the almond is missing IMO. Caramelized bananas melds well with the cinnamon and bananas.
I was really excited for this when it was announced back in August, but most of the early reviews (and now yours included) note that the bananas are quite subtle. I'm still picking up a bottle, but it's probably not going to be what I was hoping for. Will you be getting your hands on an Angel's Envy port cask aged bottle? I'm most excited for that, and I already have a bottle pre-ordered.
It also didn't help anything that I had a much more banana-forward beer the night before. I am hopeful that I can score the Angel's Envy because I LOVE port. Cheers!
I had my Bananas Foster this weekend, and I think I was a little disappointed in this one as well. It was good, it was tasty and sweet, and the banana was subtle.. But the thing I've loved with these Dessert-y ones the last couple of years (thinking Spumoni Prop, or Strawberry ice cream bar Prop, or Fig Newton last year) is that moment when you can really taste that dessert they are trying to give you (I still reminisce about that Spumoni Prop from a couple years ago).. but I never got that "This is Bananas Foster" moment with this one.
I am stealing this! This is exactly right. At not point did it give me the thing it was trying to. I think of that cinnamon roll stout from Hop Butcher and that gave me it in beer form. You nailed it. Cheers!
I was very disappointed in this. I was hoping for more banana taste. Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent stout. I was just hoping for more banana taste.
Very disappointed in this. Caught some good banana aromas as the beer warmed, but very much struggled to find any real banana flavors. Just seemed to detract from a good ‘23 BCBS base
Yeah, my first sip was the one where I got the most banana notes but extremely subtle. Would have never said this was bananas foster variant. Much prefer the base beer which, where I live, is 1/2 the cost.
Have 2 bottles of this one at home. waiting for the holiday to crack open! Lovee their stouts
Awesome! I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. Cheers!
Just got a case of this on clearance at Woodman's for $60. Absolutely couldn't pass it up! Going to be trying it out next weekend for my birthday.
That is an amazing price. Wow! And happy birthday!
I reviewed this one, today, scoring it a 98/100 "A+" (outstanding).
I'm glad u reviewed this I was curious!!
Bourbon County Season cheers 🍻
You got your hands on it early. I am a bit excited about this beer. Banana is certainly an interesting adjunct.
It is. I just wish it had more banana taste to it. Cheers!
I think you would appreciate the subtleness of it. And I have heard the same thing about using bananas in beer. Cheers!
New Holland's Banana Coconut stout (Dragon's Milk Reserve) was one of the best beers. I'm very disappointed that they never brought it back.
I can't even remember if I have had that one. Some of their variants are amazing for sure. Cheers!
Not much character in the variants this year. If I see them out I'll pick some up, but probably won't be going out first thing on Friday this time
I really liked the base but this one and the Backyard are, I think, one and done for me. I might buy another Backyard to age. We'll see.
Can’t wait to pick this up. Bourbon County stouts are great…even though the hype isn’t there
@@NoHypeBeerReviews I remember seeing the Earl Grey version on shelves a couple years after it came out
@@johnnytactical3054 me too, actually.
Yup!
100%. It tasted good but the cost and lack of banana still makes me mad.
That is how it usually is for me as well. I was shocked to find some early, easily, and without a high markup. Cheers!
I had one a few days ago and it was just MASSIVE banana. It was sickly banana sweet. Interested on your take you didn't get that
Man I wish I had that experience. I am so jealous of that.
The cinnamon is very forward (not my fav), but not over done. Agree the almond is missing IMO. Caramelized bananas melds well with the cinnamon and bananas.
Definitely cinnamon forward but not overdone. Cheers, Ross!
Question.... if you had to buy one bottle of beer.... this one of or the 2023 "base"?
Base for sure.
Seems like you enjoyed it but not blown away.
That is exactly right. Cheers!
I love that it’s subtle banana. I’m the opposite of your preference!
I can't justify spending nearly 30 dollars on a bottle of BCBS with subtle banana flavor.
I think this would be in your wheelhouse for sure then. Cheers!
Yeah, the upcharge to flavor difference was not a good ratio IMO. Cheers!
what is that metal cap that you put on some of your open beers called? Can you get them online or was that a custom-made item for you?
www.amazon.com/Westmark-Germany-Hermetus-Resealer-Bottle/dp/B0010AWH2I?th=1
It is awesome! I cannot recommend owning one enough. If the link does not work, it is called, "Hemetus Resealer Opener".
ages for 5 years? interesting I thought the prior year's beers with natural flavors were only 2 years. (I could be mistaken)
I believe you are right. Or at least some said 2 years. Cheers, Ross!
still delicious but needed a tad more banana to justify the "variant-ness"
We agree. It tastes good but I need way more banana. Cheers!
I was very disappointed in this. I was hoping for more banana taste. Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent stout. I was just hoping for more banana taste.
100%. The lack of banana was so disappointing.
man I poured that down the drain lol sorry
So disappointing, right? I was majorly let down.
Tried this today and I was very disappointed, did not smell or taste any banana or almond. This years bornoun county’s have been mediocre .
Glad I wasn't the only one wondering where the banana and almond was. I think the base and the 2 years are great but BF and BY are huge letdowns.
