When I get to my destination I unfold and put the head on and I am ready to go. I also prefer the twist lock legs. I like PD, but this seems to have missed the mark a bit to me.
I wholeheartedly agree. I only like twist lock and the price for what you get is obnoxious. China will knock this off in 5 months. In a year, it will be just as good for $129.00
thank god I held off buying a tripod, i had been looking for the perfect travel tripod and this seems to come close. It is super compact and most importantly the leg locks are CLIPS!! I can never understand twist locks which are always so finniky to use.

I think pd has some quite cool innovations with this tripod, especially with space savings, however, the ball head looks like a mess to me. Having the adjustment ring (the ONLY adjustment option, which seems ludicrous for this price point) right next to the locking lever is an accident waiting to happen, and the design of the head means you have limited movement when your camera is in portrait orientation, and only one of the three slots will ever be on-axis with your lens. Overall, it seems a bit too much form over function for my $$$.
Thanks for the specs Jas, I use the Vanguard Veo 2 264CB (carbon fibre/ball head), got it for $219AUD from ebay a year ago. Weights 1.2kg, min pack length is 403mm, just slightly longer but lighter than the PD tripod. In general its a pretty good travel tripod and the Ballhead fits the Peakdesign (PD) Clutch V3 tripod mount all being straped to my PD 10L Sling bag, super convenient ina nice package. Once you get use to the turn "knobs" its pretty fast to pack and unpack it. I think the latch system in PD, while looks good, I agree has the potential to be weak point and could be accidentally broken in one travels. Other improvement is using D rings screw to tighten the tripod mount are the way to go!! if you ever wanted them tighen them more u can alway improvise with a "screwdriver" instument and wedge it in the D ring and turn. Having no panning is a fail for a "travel" tripod head, they need to be flexible in their applications. Wished the round screw was replace with a trianglar shaped will give more torque. Be awesome of they could incorperate a horizontal/overhead camera setup. I'm a fan of PD gear, but I give this a pass.
My kit is Gitzo 1555 + Sirui C10 ball head, it is lighter (1220gram) and shorter folded (35,5 cm), if you ball head is stored separately from the legs, legs diameter is really narrow and unused space reduced. It easily fits in my second smaller carry on bag / bagpack. I do not to store tripod in the PD tight side pocket, If I need tripod at hand, I carry it on strap provided by gitzo. What I really would like to know, if it more immune to vibrations from wind than my kit or not.
I remembered when the Everyday Backpack was released, everyone said that it was too expensive for a very uncomfortable bag. But hey, i see a lot of people used it anyway. I owned 2 bags and prolly buy this one. Maybe sooner
If your going to step up to $600..might as go all the way and invest in Gitzo ...if you ever get a chance tinker with those at the camera store..you will be sold
Thanks for a more objective review than others I've watched this morning. I did have some questions: 1) How stable is the center column in wind when raised? I shoot mainly landscape and wonder if that thin center column will vibrate in the wind more than other tripods. 2) How stable is the center column's up/down movement when raised? In someone else's video he had a bag hanging from the hook for stabilization; he then moved the tripod twice to get it out of the way and it dropped an inch or two each time, no camera mounted. Hoping this is because he just didn't fully secure it, not a design flaw. 3) How easy would you say it is to twist the small side knob to raise/lower the center column with gloves? 4) Unrelated - What is the swing out filter holder you're using (1:35, 11:30)? Looks handy!
1. it hasn't been windy in LA but I will be going on a trip soon so hopefully I will get an update on this. 2. We had a backpack holding it down with two cameras on the tripod, it held up fine 3. It wouldn't be too difficult since the knob does come out for easier access. 4. Rapid Filter System by Alter! Another KS gear geni.us/Jvv0
Thank you for being the only one I've seen up until now, to talk about why the price is what it is. Also for the people complaining, there are tripods in that price range from established manufacturers, which doesn't even include a head, most time their ballheads go for 200-400 extra. Also i love that you put the fluidhead on the ballhead, did you try pans? If so, how stable/shaky were they?
Expensive + uses plastic internals & parts prone to failure - check Have to raise centre column up in order to get level everytime you setup - check Tripod bubble level blocked when camera mounted - check 5 leg sections + flimsy centre column = less stability - check Included Quickrelease plate for head - requires HEX Tool for plate - check Gimmicky features / branding for low budget vloggers, F'N Carbon / phone holder (?!) - check Will be interesting to see how long these last before they start falling apart... Unfortunate to see a lot of RUclipsrs pushing these for $ If you want to spend $450+ on a travel tripod , Gitzo / RRS will do a better job.
kane01337 genuine question, did you copy and paste this list onto all RUclips videos of this Tripod? I responded on one video as it was evident that some statements were subject to clarification, such as your misunderstanding that the Cam Locks are plastic, which I have shown to be incorrect, but seeing the same comments on every video I go to. (As previously full disclosure I work for Peak Design) I’m now seeing your comments edited to recommend the Gitzo Tripod, any affiliation or personal preference?
Almost bought and tried to ignore the price...then I remembered leaning my A7III against some rocks last week did fine. I couldn’t justify the price for an amateur like myself. Maybe if you’re a real pro like Jason, it’s worth it.
I don't understand the people complaining about the price. A Manfrotto legs only costs $380, add in a decent ball head such as the Acratech Ultimate for another $380 and you are into your set up for $720. RRS legs only will cost you more than that, Gitzo and Robus the same.
Welcome back! I have a question - does it work like a leveling ballhead? With the pano happening above the ball, it seems as though it would work that way. That would be a bonus. According to the kickstarter video it looks like you can remove the center column, another plus. As far as price goes, I don’t think I’d pay $599, but the kickstarter price is worth it. Considering the $$$ I’ve paid to replace ball heads on tripods I bought on sale because they seemed like a good deal.
Love it man. The other reviews, other than Tony Northrup were a little too approving of it. I love that you were honest and also weren't afraid to show a ThinkTank bag 😎
Thanks for the vid Jason. Saw this tripod here first. Just wondering do the legs have multiple angle settings for width? Like between open and flat to the ground? I think the BeFree has 3. I'll be interested to see your full review.
I have the MeFOTO GlobeTrotter carbon fiber tripod, which also includes a monopod, and fits nicely in both my carryon suitcase and camera backpack. It’s 3.7lb, and naturally I’d love it to be less, but it’s steady in wind and it retails for “only” US$350. I generally like Peak Design’s stuff, but I can’t see enough of a benefit to spending $250 more for this tripod. I get that they price as a premium brand, but this doesn’t appear to deliver enough extra to be so much more expensive.
pretty awesome tripod. And possibly the future for tripods to be better designed like this. I do have one question though. What is the story about the filter holder? ive never seen one of those. Do you have a link to one of those? im curious. lol
Backed and own multiple Peak Design items, for almost double the price of my MeFoTo Roadtrip Tripod it don't have the option to transform into a monopod is kind of a miss. Lets hope the final product will include that, but I doubt it.
It's a shame it ships all the way down in December, would've loved to have this in my kit during the summer! Gonna have to back it either way i think haha.
Peter I am no one to talk you out of it but having recently personally experienced this Tripod in person, I have cancelled my pledges, immediately. Unless you will be using this to use it with your smartphone or maybe go pro or something similar, this tripod is literally useless for professional photographers. Its biggest drawback is the limiting capabilities of its head. You will have to use an adaptor and 3rd party ball head to get any sorta productivity out of this tripod. And once you have that ball head on, this tripod wont be compact anymore....so down the drain goes your hard earned moolah that you paid for compactness. I think this was made with the Smartphone users in mind .
@@VoxPopuli911 awesome. Love to get a second opinion on things! Glad you wrote this because it felt extremely expensive and as of now I'm not gonna back it anymore. Looking at the BeFree series instead! Thanks again!
For videos peeps... how is the stability, I also had that manfrotto pro fluid head that Jason’s using here and it’s pretty heavy on my beefree which makes me want to check out the gimbal fluid head from Gitzo but it’s $500 ...no way lol
On the one hand, you can grab the carbon fiber version on kickstarter at $480 and wait until 2020 to get your hands on it. On the other hand, here in Hong Kong, you can get a Gitzo 1 series with ball head set at $780 at get it right away. I think I'll go for the latter. Great, informative video as always Jason!
The iphone accessory - can it handle an iphone 7+ in an Otterbox case? Lots of manufacturers make iphone clamps without taking into consideration that many of us use cases to protect our phones when shooting in harsh environments
Founder of peak design on tech crunch promo made it seem like he discovered the leg geometry. I have had a tripod flashlight from Home Depot for over 12 years that has the same legs. I love it when entrepreneurs make it seem like they are Tesla. I also love the media blitz of testimonials by RUclips influencers that seems synchronized and glowing and yet they say they are not peak design hacks. Having said this it looks like a great concept and tripod that like many other tripods and camera equipment is waaaayyy over priced. Sometimes I wish smartphone would decimate DSLR and pro camera accessory companies- greedy bastards that they are.
Well, I wouldn't frame it that way. Some of us are thoroughly testing the product to help make sure people are not wasting money on a dud item. These test and videos do take a lot of time so for us, the tripod isn't really free.
I have the Small rig L Bracket for Sony A7iii. Since its Arca compatible, can I forgo the Peak Design Camera plate and just snap it into place with the L Bracket ?
Wow i‘m a big fan of the peak design camera clip and anchor links and even thow they are high priced they are worth it but 600 for a tripod like this is more than overpriced. Staying with my rollei c5i carbon fiber tripod that costs less than 150
I always appreciate your honest looks at gear (pros AND cons with examples) even though I end up spending money money after watching your videos. Lol! I’ve been using a carbon fiber Gitzo travel tripod with a Really Right Stuff ballhead for 12 years, and it’s still compact and in great shape. I don’t need a new tripod, but I used your link anyways. Haha! I love the form factor of the PD. It’s significantly slimmer than my Gitzo. Mahalo, Jason and Vivienne.
Besides being lighter (the only thing anyone ever talks about) carbon fiber also is less sensitive to vibration than is aluminum. Wood beats CF in that regard but at considerable penalty in weight and bulk.
It looks really interesting, especially the small form-factor. But this is the second review I'm watching and nobody is talking about the stability of the tripod when it's extended. That's the single most important feature of a tripod and an area where a LOT of travel tripods fail. Since this one is a 5 part leg-design, that usually also means thinner legs and therefor a more unstable design. It would be great to get some details about the actual stability of the legs.
Hi Jason, good vid. However, both the centre column and the final section of the legs look kinda skinny. Are there any issues with movement/flexing especially while doing long exposures, say, in a moderately windy environment with a 70-200 mounted? Thanks.
@@Teh-Penguin A lot of people have said it's stable, but do the legs flex a lot? Winds tend to push tripods to their limits..but that's why we use tripods right?
Hey Jason. Have you ever made a video about gimbals? What is that set up with remote control; that you are using? I am a complete novice in these matters
Can the tripod head support a L bracket?? I have a 3 legged things (bring on the comments) L bracket that I love using on my sony a7iii. I love peak design products, but not being able to use the L bracket would suck.
Jason, the plate latch, is it plastic? How is the ball attached to the center post, just looks like it would snap off. Could see a A9 w/70-200 lying on the ground when the post snaps the ball off from the mechanical advantage the head looks to have from the design, just wondering?
Have you tried putting some weight on the hook to weigh it down? Is the hook made out of metal or plastic? I tend to find myself shooting in some breezy or windy spots. By the way that city hall is beautiful, my girlfriend lives down the road, literally next to the train station. Which I cannot wait to shoot some low light/light trail photography when I move there from Alaska.
I like the design, and how compact it is, but it doesn't seem as sturdy as I need. I cant imagine it would be stable in water or high winds. I'll stick with my ProMediaGear until it comes out and I can see it in person.
An amateur here, with the usual tripods you have 2 screws so one axis can be fixed while the camera can be rotated on the other, for eg to shoot a pano. How does one do that here with a single knob?
Question: I saw in other vids that the head can only go into portrait mode on left only, combined with the fact that this head doesn’t have horizontal rotation control, doesn’t that mean you cannot rotate it to the right to do a right side portrait mode except to rotate the entire tripod around to do it on the right?
NOPE. The ball head is extremely limiting. In essence this tripod has been made for Smartphone and go pro users. I am saying this with complete authority & integrity of after having played with it for couple of hours.
Leofoto Ls series is very similar and cheaper. Its without a center column, but looking at peak design's chopstick-like center column, i doubt anyone will use it for long exposure.
I understand the price is there for a reason, but still scares a lot of people, especially who are starting to buy their first tripod. Otherwise this a really good tripod, with some serious improvements required.
Hi Jason, just watched your video for the first time. I shoot real estate photography so a good tripod is vital. I have a benro adventure series 3 carbon fiber tripod. Have had it for about 3 years. Complete disappointment, so I’m looking for a new one. I’m having a hard time deciding... I like to use the mini manfrotto geared head with the three twisties that help you quickly level the camera. Do you think I can mount it on top of this tripod head and it would still be sturdy? Thanks for any help. I’d like to get the $120 discount but unfortunately I can’t test it first so hoping you can help. Thanks!

I remembered when the Everyday Backpack was released, everyone said that it was too expensive for a very uncomfortable bag. But hey, i see a lot of people used it anyway. I owned 2 bags and prolly buy this one. Maybe sooner
@@Teh-Penguin everyday backpack of peak design. Sorry i was really lazy to type earlier. hehehehe
If your going to step up to $600..might as go all the way and invest in Gitzo ...if you ever get a chance tinker with those at the camera store..you will be sold
absolutely! but for compact and space-saving, PD takes the cake.
Thanks for a more objective review than others I've watched this morning. I did have some questions:
1) How stable is the center column in wind when raised?
2. We had a backpack holding it down with two cameras on the tripod, it held up fine
I did! It's not too shabby! They also have an option on the KS that allows you to use custom heads
"in theory"... carbon fiber tripods also absorb vibrations
Reminds me of Game of Thrones. Love it. Love it. Disappointing ending. Could use a rewrite on that price tag.
I am dying 😂
Expensive + uses plastic internals & parts prone to failure - check
Have to raise centre column up in order to get level everytime you setup - check
Tripod bubble level blocked when camera mounted - check
5 leg sections + flimsy centre column = less stability - check
Included Quickrelease plate for head - requires HEX Tool for plate - check
Gimmicky features / branding for low budget vloggers, F'N Carbon / phone holder (?!) - check
Will be interesting to see how long these last before they start falling apart... Unfortunate to see a lot of RUclipsrs pushing these for $
If you want to spend $450+ on a travel tripod , Gitzo / RRS will do a better job.
kane01337 genuine question, did you copy and paste this list onto all RUclips videos of this Tripod? I responded on one video as it was evident that some statements were subject to clarification, such as your misunderstanding that the Cam Locks are plastic, which I have shown to be incorrect, but seeing the same comments on every video I go to.
(As previously full disclosure I work for Peak Design)
I’m now seeing your comments edited to recommend the Gitzo Tripod, any affiliation or personal preference?
Almost bought and tried to ignore the price...then I remembered leaning my A7III against some rocks last week did fine.
I couldn’t justify the price for an amateur like myself. Maybe if you’re a real pro like Jason, it’s worth it.
I bought a $50 bean bag ball tripod in Japan. It works pretty well for areas that doesn't allow tripods!
Ryan 3.0 But he got his FREE
Four fingers deeeeep!! WOW!
They have an option on KS for custom heads too!
For $600 I rather get the Manfrotto tripod for a 1/3 of the price
Which tripod do they have with the same versatility?
@@agaplife3764 does it matter if you can get one for $250?

Love it man. The other reviews, other than Tony Northrup were a little too approving of it. I love that you were honest and also weren't afraid to show a ThinkTank bag 😎
Fire b roll Jason. This is a beautiful tripod. Time to start saving up for it.
It's all Vivienne and my bro, Tam Lam!
Can you test the tripod with the fluid head by showing pan and tilting 4K video shots using the 70-200 GM? Thanks..
Do you have a link to one of those? im curious. lol
Rapid Filter System with Polar Pro Filter geni.us/Jvv0 !
9:54 Is that a swing out ND filter with Magnetic closure?? Where do I buy that!!! 😱
phototrend.fr/2019/05/alter-rapid-filter-system-porte-filtre-innovant/
Backed and own multiple Peak Design items, for almost double the price of my MeFoTo Roadtrip Tripod it don't have the option to transform into a monopod is kind of a miss. Lets hope the final product will include that, but I doubt it.
I doubt it as well :(
Wish you would have mentioned the price sooner in the video.....
:(
Sounds promising I'll make sure to do my research on this product thanks Jason!
Legend Vong legend. Hoping my video just shows up in the suggested after yours lmao. Tam on the BTS!
On my end, I see James Matthews' Weebill video lol!
@@JasonVong lmao wtf. I can't compete with y'all famouseses
Cool I'm interested in that tripod
it is seriously DOPE!
It's a shame it ships all the way down in December, would've loved to have this in my kit during the summer!
Gonna have to back it either way i think haha.
Hahaha love it! Gotta back it despite the dilemma
@UCgrQElbWRDW57V1cW5eKNbg Yeah it seems like Manfrotto is the way to go! Those are some weak points for sure... Thanks for letting me know man!
Do I need to make another trip to Mong Kok again?!
@@JasonVong You know you want it ;)
The iphone accessory - can it handle an iphone 7+ in an Otterbox case? Lots of manufacturers make iphone clamps without taking into consideration that many of us use cases to protect our phones when shooting in harsh environments
That I don't know. My case is slim. My guess is probably not
Founder of peak design on tech crunch promo made it seem like he discovered the leg geometry.
It's crazy expensive. I guess we are also paying for the few hundreds of copies that influencers got for free. I'm happy with my Vanguard VEO 204AB.
Well, I wouldn't frame it that way. Some of us are thoroughly testing the product to help make sure people are not wasting money on a dud item. These test and videos do take a lot of time so for us, the tripod isn't really free.
@@JasonVong lol
A great review of the features / design. I'd love to get my hands on this new tripod.
I have the Small rig L Bracket for Sony A7iii. Since its Arca compatible, can I forgo the Peak Design Camera plate and just snap it into place with the L Bracket ?
Was wondering the same thing
I believe so! If you head to their KS page, you will see them using an L Bracket
Jason Vong awesome!!
I know PD has said it is compatable with "most Arca-compatable plates" - how about the Really Right Stuff plates?
That I'm not too quite sure but if you reach out to them in social, they probably can help you out!
4 finger deep lol great review
Wow i‘m a big fan of the peak design camera clip and anchor links and even thow they are high priced they are worth it but 600 for a tripod like this is more than overpriced. Staying with my rollei c5i carbon fiber tripod that costs less than 150
Heard 4 fingers deep. Auto Subscribe!
Is that all it takes?! Nice!!
Informative🤔 & Funny Review 😂! Keep making good content 👍🏾. Impressive yet expensive product. Like they say though “you pay for what you get”
I always appreciate your honest looks at gear (pros AND cons with examples) even though I end up spending money money after watching your videos.
Thanks Liana!! :D
its possible put extensor for adapt a octabox or something like that? Because in this way its possible use one tripod for everything
Besides being lighter (the only thing anyone ever talks about) carbon fiber also is less sensitive to vibration than is aluminum. Wood beats CF in that regard but at considerable penalty in weight and bulk.
Fantastic! I needed a four finger deep tripod. I think this is for me.
Loooovvee this! but i do not want to wait forever for it to be shipped......decisions, decisions
That's the negative of Kickstarters... the waiting game. But it's about $100 discount if you back it now
It looks really interesting, especially the small form-factor. It would be great to get some details about the actual stability of the legs.
super stable. I showed a shot of two cameras with two 85s with the center column up and it help up well. My next video will show the results
I have! If you search up jason vong gimbal, you will find them in the top results!
Can the tripod head support a L bracket??
I have a 3 legged things (bring on the comments) L bracket that I love using on my sony a7iii. I love peak design products, but not being able to use the L bracket would suck.
if the L Bracket is Arca Swiss compatible, it should work on the PD one as well!
Jason, the plate latch, is it plastic? How is the ball attached to the center post, just looks like it would snap off. Could see a A9 w/70-200 lying on the ground when the post snaps the ball off from the mechanical advantage the head looks to have from the design, just wondering?
Nope not plastic! the ball is held together by screw
Yep! It held down my two camera setup with 85s on it!
@@JasonVong Awesome! What type of material is the hook made out of?
I wish this would allow me to shoot videos and photographs. As of now I use a manfrotto befree live.
And that statement was made before I saw the entire video.
Hi Jason can the ball head be used for simple panoramas (horizontal mode)?
NOPE. The ball head is extremely limiting. In essence this tripod has been made for Smartphone and go pro users. I am saying this with complete authority & integrity of after having played with it for couple of hours.
2:03 I thought we can already switch to portrait mode by the mount ring on the 70200 ?
You can but I used it to demonstrate how the tripod can handle the weight
Leofoto Ls series is very similar and cheaper. Its without a center column, but looking at peak design's chopstick-like center column, i doubt anyone will use it for long exposure.
I understand the price is there for a reason, but still scares a lot of people, especially who are starting to buy their first tripod. Otherwise this a really good tripod, with some serious improvements required.
Its not a bowl tripod, it has a center stalk.... From what year is this thing?
Just saw this on my feed, crazy good
@jason bong What's the ND filter holder you're using in 11:34?
Nice video Jason! - Jaron

I saw this tripod on Kitty's channel first 👀 🤣 came to check out the Manfrotto head tests
Full disclosure peak design paid me to say positive things

Thanks!
Great video, saw it here first. I have a manfrotto travel carbon tripod that looks more compact and lighter.
