OMG...this group is amazing!....I love them! Such perfection...my absolute favorite in the whole world!!
Avi Kaplan left the group and his spot was filled by Matt Sallee!
Pentatonix is so close to perfection, it is scary!!! Would love you to react to their live version of Hallelujah, it will also blow your mind!!!
Avi left the group in 2017 amicably. He wanted to travel less. Matt took his spot as the bass singer. He has a gorgeous rich voice.
Avi wanted to travel less because his mother was very ill
Remember... this just 5 voices...!!!!
If you love Pentatonix, then you must react to "Mary did you Know"
When the studio video of this first came out, Brian May (Queen's guitarist) posted a link to it on his Facebook with the single word: "Enjoy." If an original member of Queen does that, you have to count it as high praise.
Yes I did I was at that concert at the Hollywood Bowl and it was Totaly Perfect ! I love them so talented and wonderful humans . . Enjoy because I'm loving your reactions to them they are Amazing . .
Watch Kevin play the cello and beat box
Mitch (the guy doing the most singing) is the guitar
Thank you for reacting to this. Hadn't seen it before.
Recommend their 90s Dance Medley.
Seriously watch the video for this one. It will help you see each of them.
I was at that concert and indeed they are even better Amazing live. .
Wow..I thought no one could do this song justice, but I was wrong..lol. Great performance. ❤️
It took this group several years together to feel confident enough with their arrangement to do the Great Freddie M justice. Dr Brian May liked it enough to post it on his social media, saying..."enjoy!".
No, no, no. Watch the studio version with the video. OMG, so much better than this. This version is pitiful.
Idk if anyone explained. But, Avi one of the originals had a really deep voice, too. He decided to leave Pentatonix to spend more time with his family. No hurt feelings that I've heard of. He stayed until they found Matt that sings bass, and is also a beat boxer. Scott is also a beat boxer. Pentatonix is so amazing. This is an amazing reminice of Bohemian Rhapody!
They are insanely good, live. Great reaction, thank you!
Avi the bearded guy that used to wear a hat, left the group & helped find Matt, his replacement, before he left. The video is closer up so obviously easier to see them & who is doing what. You need to check out one of their medley performances. They have them by a specific artist like Michael Jackson & then they have them by style or whatever. I really loved the 90's dance medley. They have several & you obviously can't go wrong.
I was at this show! It was so amazing!!!
They are amazing, aren't they? lol Fun reaction . . . thanks for the big smile!!
I have seen them live 2x and they are real friends who make amazing music together! Their 3 Grammys are a testament to that! Their decade together gives us a discography that is wide & deep! Welcome!
Thank you for reacting to this beautiful Pentatonix live performance. They are always amazing live. I hope that you will react to more Pentatonix videos and songs.
This was such a great reaction. I really enjoyed it.
Did you know that Brian May of Queen has a link to this cover on his social media site with a one word caption, enjoy.
Also, this concert was on the 28th of October. On the 8th, 4 of the 5 members of the group actually worked the ticket box office for 4 hours. I talked with someone who was there. They milled around the crowd, sang a few songs and generally hung out.
How many multi platinum selling artists would take the time to do such a thing? I think that it's a testament to how much of a connection they have with their fans.
It was actually September 29th for this show. I was there and it was the most amazing night! 🙏🏾✌🏾
The experience of seeing them love is indescribable. I went as a Pentaholic and my husband went with me as a person who was slightly annoyed with how often I played Pentatonix, but still acknowledged how talented they were. He left that concert blown away with how amazing they were, how kind, how funny and joyful they were. I personally was just in awe the whole night and literally was only able to record 1 song and part of 2 others. I was fully in the moment. I held my phone the wrong way and while I’m sad my video isn’t the best quality (especially since I was in the 5th row), I was completely in the moment. I enjoyed every second.
Something to know about Pentatonix. They don't do ANYTHING in studio that they can't reproduce live. That's a point of distinction for them. It's a big part of what makes them who they are.
But you are correct in one aspect. One of them is 'missing'. Avi Kaplan was the original bass of this group but had to leave it for personal reasons. Matt, the new bass joined them afterward. It's the only member change they've had in over 10 years. But don't count Avi out! He's now enjoying a solo career, he also has videos out, like Change on the Rise, Chains, 4 in the Morning, with his group, the Sequoias.
Thanks for putting this up. They really did a great show with this. There were, btw, some extra choir help in the middle section.
Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
The founding members are:-
Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty")Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on RUclips, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his RUclips videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on RUclips), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on RUclips, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes.
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
They have been nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen.
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021.
They have announced that they will have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame to be installed next year.
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.
PTX sounds just like Freddie!❤
The more you listen to PTX, you will come to know their voices. 😉 And subbing for more PTX please!
They sound the same, sometimes even better live. You need to watch their live 90s Dance Medley from this same concert. I also recommend their originals Love Again, Coffee in Bed and their Evolution of Michael Jackson. You have 10 years worth of perfection to look forward to. 😁
You might like to react to one of their Evolution covers. They have done awesome Evolutions of Ariana Grande, Michael Jackson, and Rihanna. Literally any song you choose to react to will be amazing.
Yes there are 5 & Avi the one who looked like Jesus who wore a hat & sang bass left to go solo. His replacement is Matt who has a beautiful voice. Since Avi is gone, Matt sings on Sound of Silence.
Loved your reaction! The studio version is a lot of fun and there is also a behind the scenes.
You might want to try THE SOUND OF SILENCE, DAFT PUNK, IMAGINE and one of my favorites, THE EVOLUTION OF MICHAEL JACKSON 💕
It's much easier to see who's singing what parts in the official video for this song. The way the video was filmed is also very entertaining. Avi, the original bass of the group, is in it instead of Matt.
You should check out the official music video for this one, (there's a different lineup in it however. Matt - the bass in this video, was the replacement for PTX's original bass singer Avi Kaplan. Avi left the group in 2017 I believe), so the official music video has Avi instead of Matt. Also, the megaphone that mitch has in the official video is just a prop, as you could see in this one, he actually can do the guitar riff solo sound without the aid of a megaphone. It's just used in the video to call attention to who is making the noise.
Learning their voices will take a little time and a few reactions, but it probably won't take you too long. Each of them have a distinct voice - unless they're trying to "merge" into a single voice, as Kirstin and Mitch (the lead singer for most of this song) sometimes do. Those two can be difficult to distinguish when they're trying to sound alike.
In general, Pentatonix tries to arrange their studio recordings so that they can perform the same song live, without using any special tricks or techniques. In their most recent albums they've gone away from that a little bit, and so they don't perform some of those songs in concert.
Please watch and react to the beginners guide to Penatonix. It’s on you tube and will help you see who is who. They are so talented
Yay, you did more PTX! They were a pandemic discovery for me, and I’ve now gotten to the point where I can recognize their individual voices most of the time. They are phenomenal live, but the videos can give you a closer look at who’s singing what. Just an FYI, their label is aggressive about blocking. I think it’s the visuals that trigger the block, so you may want to layer some text over the video (“Copyright Protected” in fairly large type, for example) or play with opacity to make it more transparent. Loved your grin throughout this reaction, that’s always my response too. Well done! Peace from Ohio …
Yeah I’m aware some reactors been venting on twitter
Subbing in hopes of more Pentatonix. I have my favorites, but when you are just getting started I think it's good to find a song you already know and check out their version of it. I don't know any other group I could say this about but all their songs are worth checking out. They are best known for their 7 Christmas albums, but they also have several EPs and albums with covers of pop songs from various decades and genres, from Motown to EDM, K-pop and pop divas. Most albums have at least one original song, and there are two all (or mostly) original albums. And all their songs have creative arrangements that preserve the original character of the song but put a new spin on it.
Check out their live performances from their Christmas Tour 2022. The live performances are just as good or even better than their studio version. Yes they are musical aliens.
Amazing reaction!! I highly recommend their Aaliyah x Dua Lipa mash up of New Rules x Are you that Somebody
You can see who's doing which vocals in the official video, although Avi (Hallelujah's beanie guy) is in it, he left the group in 2017 amicablely, Matt replaced him. As you listen to them more you'll start knowing their voices and recognizing them easier.
You can't go wrong with any of their songs, I suggest you start with songs you might be familiar with, if you're not familiar with s song they're upgrading listen to the original song and then to the Pentatonix version do you can enjoy it better. Their record label is crazy about copyright so try pausing more or adding a filter to the video, we Pentaholics know these videos and we love to see new people reacting to them. Check out Daft Punk, 90's Medley, Imagine, Come Along, Sound of Silence Mad World and Gold for their upgrades and Sing, Love Me When I Don't, Happy Now, Cracked, Thank You and Run To You for their originals.
Great seeing your reactions to them and enjoy your PTX journey.
The answer to your question…they sound the same or better live than the studio versions.
They only do upgrades!
The guitar solo is all Mitch...
Avi left, Matt took over the bass...
Now react to O Come All Ye Faithful... ruclips.net/video/Mj7Pr42rliI/видео.html
This all acapella no instruments
i don't know you
i don't like queen
lets see how this goes
I'm sorry, but compared to the studio version this stinks. (Let the beating commence now.) This sounds like "If Disney did Queen!"
I loved your reaction to it and that tells me you'd have been so much more impressed with the other one. Try it. It's wonderful!!
