Something I just wanna point out: Tadano is the BEST person in the series, his and Retsuko’s relationship didn’t work out and there was no bitter resentment, no toxicity from either. Tadano being Haida’s wingman when Haida was trying to get with Retsuko was a sign of healthy Ex-BF attitude. Tadano has ALOT of power and could ruin Retsuko’s life but he doesn’t. And instead of moving on with someone more compatible and who actually wants to date him, he puts down the chance of an actual relationship to keep obsessing over the idea over Retsuko in his head even though she already shot him down.

Haida came off too obsessed for me to ever be comfortable with him. Retsuko was at least trying to figure herself out while dating other people, but Haida didn't seem to show any real effort to figure his own life out when she wasn't even available. He stagnated and pined so much that it felt more like he was in love with the idea of Retsuko, instead of who she actually was.

  • @Phookax
    @Phookax Год назад +1113

I WANT TO MENTION!! When Haida goes after Retsuko and 'musically yells at her' it's not actually bad. It's actually a REALLY good thing he did that, because retsuko was cooped up in her room scrolling through hate comments about her, which is an act of self harm.
What Haida did, was drag her out of the house and into a place she enjoys and in comfortable in. She was clearly shutting everything down which is what people who self harm or are in a depressive episode often do when someone is trying to help them. He then keeps talking to her to get a rise out of her. He even says that she can yell at him all she wants, because then its at least talking about her feelings. Which she NEEDS TO DO TO HEAL.
On the surface this may seem like a bad thing to do. But in reality, as someone who has literally gone through this multiple times, he did exactly the right thing. This scene actually made me love Haida because it really showed how much he was there for her.

Ben Diskin, Haida's voice actor, gave a really good breakdown of the scene in a podcast interview about season 3. Basically, what he said was 1) Retsuko's go to method to feel better is to scream about her problems, so isolating herself and shutting down was not good for her, 2) Haida is a bit of an idiot and so his go to method to fix a problem can be kind of stupid but somehow still work (the analogy he used was dressing up like the Fonz and smacking a broken television to get it to turn on), and 3) that this only worked because of these quirks of their character and that he does not at all recommend screaming at your friends when they are feeling down about traumatic events.

    • @kn-jt9dj
      @kn-jt9dj Год назад +79

      I kind of disagree
The problem i have with the finale is that it focuses more on the other characters _talking_ about Retsuko's trauma rather than dedicating enough screentime on how it actually affected her: we barely get any time to see Retsuko really _react_ to anything
She faints, Inui asks Haida about his decision between her and Retsuko, Retsuko has a nightmare dream sequence personifying her current emotional state, then we cut back to the other characters talking about her situation where Washimi tells Haida that Retsuko needs more time, Gori reveals that Retsuko and Haida are 100% compatible, and then Haida drags her to the karaoke bar where she finally spills her guts and recovers from her trauma: all in the span of like 20-25 minutes
Ultimately, I have a hard time really buying that Haida saved Retsuko from her own self-destruction because we didn't really _see_ Retsuko's self-destruction, so the urgency in the situation gets tanked and Haida's reaction can come off as unwarranted when even Ton was more classy when he tried to help Retsuko out in her relationship, which is why I'd wager that most people saw his behavior as abusive rather than helpful even if the show demonstrates that its the latter. It's mostly tell and very little show, which i think is unfortunate due to the pacing
Maybe if the finale was an episode longer it could've fleshed out these ideas a little more
      That's my take though

@@TomSketchit Screaming at your friends in not what I meant. Obviously that part is specific to this scene and the context of the show. The part that is good is basically dragging your friend away from the area or situation that is making the problem worse (Retsuko making herself feel worse by locking herself in her room and scrolling through hate comments), bringing them to a place that is safe and comforting ( Taking her to karaoke), and getting them to stop shutting down and actually talk about there feelings. (Hairda did this by yelling at Retsuko until she blew up at him. It worked but I agree that this is not a good method. This only worked because Retsuko works through her issues through screaming death metal, and the only way to get her to that point was to make her mad.) A lot of people and friends may require more gentel methods to get them to open up and others may require more aggressive means. (this does not mean yelling, or physical violence. I was actually on-board with Haida and Retsuko until season 4. I liked how season 3 forced Haida to self-reflect a bit and realize he doesn't actually know Retsuko that well at all (That plane scene with Tadano is really good), and the Guitar scene shows that they could have decent chemistry together when they actually interact. Then season 4 happens and you know all that interaction and character chemistry I was talking about? All that happened off screen, also Haida's being uncharacteristically cowardly even for him, literally running away when Retsuko's offering him what he wants on a silver platter. Are you fucking kidding me? I felt betrayed, like this was what we were building up to? Haida being even more of a wet paper towel and the rest of the cast agreeing that the only way to fix it is to have Retsuko ask him out. Character growth? Nah, let's just give him everything he wants for literally no reason.

  • @jack0f4lltrades28

Haida was undoubtedly one of the most relatable characters in season 1, everyone who mentioned Aggretsuko would bring up the scene of Haida lying down in the rain, regretting his inability to take action. A lot of people have been there, it hurts. But in the end, he gains the courage and he takes his shot. He's taking a step forward, this is development.
The Christmas special hits with a hard truth, she says no. He is hurt, but accepts it. And in season 2, it's obvious he still has feelings for her but he's taking small steps. How much does it know about Restukko? Not much outside of work, so he takes the approach to be her friend. This is good.
Season 3, Haida becomes the secondary protagonist. He has the opportunity to move on, and finds it difficult to move on from Retsuko. Even gets a talk with her ex that maybe it's for the best he move on with his life. Fenneko even gives the same advice, move on. Stop crushing on her. And he does. But to his love interest, it's clear he still has a thing for her. Even if they are just friends, he really really cares about her. He takes a huge risk and chooses the possibility of being with Retsuko over moving on, and it hurts. But even the love interest understands, she loves Haida but he doesn't love her. He likes the idea of a relationship, but it's clear his body language shows he doesn't love her. And in the season 3 finale, he takes the ultimate step to pick Restuko up. This is it, the peak of their relationship. They can become closer friends, it's hinted they will take the next step as friends to get to know each other more, because the dating app does show they actually have a lot in common.
Then season 4 steps in :/ I don't know what happened. New writers maybe? Haida has taken leaps backwards, instead of moving forward he is... scared of being the lesser interest because of Tadano? Relatable but the execution is very cringy. Then they both take the next step to admit they like each other... which Retsuko should know since he asked her out back in season 1, but I get it. Haida being insecure and wimpy isn't comforting that he would be a good partner. But then the show speeds up to them dating, wahh? Why? This is what the show has been building up for, why fast forward through it? I thought this was the expected reward where we the audience would be shown whether they are a solid couple or not. And the rest of the season is just messy when focusing on their relationship. Are they dating by the end? It isn't clear. He's not worming there anymore, what happened? We had 3 seasons of solid 10/10 content but... ehh.

For me, the ship died right there and then. I was sad, but okay in the beginning as you can pine for someone for years and the other person can just never be interested. By the end of the special, with the two of them hanging out for christmas, that was when it clicked that these two are end game. And while I can see how him confronting Retsuko at the end of season 3 as a good way to get her out of her self-destructive doomscrolling, the romantic declaration part of it does feel like he's leveraging her trauma to make her like him more, intentionally or not.

I found that thing with Tadano kind of interesting? Like it shows that even if you get along and click with a person, if your fundamental goals don’t align, it’s better to just go separate ways. Tadano doesn’t need to explain why he didn’t want kids or believe in marriage just like Restuko doesn’t need to explain why she does want to get married and have kids.
They want fundamentally different things. So instead of compromising what they want, they can go find someone whose goals line up with their own.

Like, while yes, he liked her for 5 years and never did anything, it was because he got the message that it was a friendship and nothing more would come of it. And tbh I respect that. Only once retsuko brought up marriage to him, did he start considering the possibility that she was interested in him. Even harder to try and get with a girl that's into you, that you're not 100% into yourself. However, I personally think the series would've been stronger had Haida and Retsuko not gotten together (I personally think Fenneko would've been a better match for him, since she's gone to great lengths to keep his self-esteem from hitting rock bottom, but that's just me). The issue with Haida is that he’s codependent. He has virtually no self-esteem of his own, and what’s getting him through life is his crush on his best friend. Basically he’s using her emotionally the way she used Resasuke (the bland one). Except instead of realizing that it’s all in his head and and moving on like she did, he’s realizing that she might ACTUALLY be the one. And it freaks him out. Because again, he has no self-esteem and thinks he isn’t good enough for anyone.
This isn’t the basis for a cute relationship, it’s one step above from being an incel. Haida is so toxic to himself that it’s starting to affect other people, bc those people care about him and want him in their lives. He’s an anxiety-riddled mess, but he is also kind, supportive, and responsible. He has good points but he can’t see them for shit.

Having just finished Season 5, it seems as though Sanrio listened to the criticisms from Seasons 3 & 4 and actually attempted to rectify a few things with Haida and Retsuko. Outside of Haida's big dumb moment from the first 2 episodes, it seemed like they were FINALLY at a point where the relationship could move forward honestly, naturally progressively. By no means were they perfect in this season, but for the first time, you could see how much trust the 2 of them had in each other and how they were actively working, pushing & encouraging one another. They finally stopped doing the will-they, won't-they nonsense, came right out and said they're a couple and they're living together, Deal With It.
Haida in particular took way less shit this season and THANK GOD... Season 4 felt like it went overboard on that point. Like, even before the window-dressing, it felt like the whole season was set up to make Haida look horrible. In Season 5, it was actually nice to hear Retsuko affirm that she wants a nice, quiet, simple relationship with him. Plus it was so much better to see Haida FINALLY move past his insecurities with Retsuko; it opened the door for the show to focus on other relationships to help push the plot forward rather than being stuck on theirs.

Yeah, this comment reflects my thoughts too. I still am not a fan of the Haida/Retsuko ship and the whole mess that led up to the point. But in S5 all things considered, it was... ok. I like that they were actually written like a couple and had to deal with adult relationship problems, situations, etc. It got me invested, I think the first half of S5 was the strongest writing. I guess the problem for me is... the relationship they have in S5 doesn't fully feel like them, them. I still don't fully understand what Retsuko likes about Haida..? Or what he likes about her, for that matter. She wants a nice quiet life together-- that's sweet, but I don't understand why. Narratively, it's as though any other couple could fill the shoes Retsuko and Haida wear in the story. The way they got together didn't have that much chemistry, and I cannot comprehend the leap from S3-S4 Retsuko and Haida's messy miscommunication and fumbling over drama to the sudden calm, stable trust they have in S5. Being generous, I guess the Haida-being-homeless arc was supposed to bridge the gap... but it still circles back to that I don't understand WHY Retsuko is so invested in this particular relationship that she's willing to work so hard for him. I liked what the show was putting down, they had cute moments and I still liked the messages they wanted to put out with that arc, but it's just too late for me to care about "Haida and Retsuko" as a "ship" specifically.

It's conflict, it makes you want to see if they will or won't stay together because of that lingering question. Yeah it's cliche but when done right, it's a good one. Haida is shown to be Retsko's match because he has a thing for rock and roll. That's it, and while it's cute to see them do a scream song together, there's not much else outside of Fenniko and work that ties them together. Often females are the only ones in the media to be shown to have BPD, even though men are just as likely to suffer from BPD. Aggretsoku pushes the boundaries of how far they will take things psychologically. This season especially showed that they could have written Haida to have those personality traits. As a man with BPD I find Haida to be more relatable to me than someone like Rebecca from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. That scene were Haida admits why he fell for Retsuko is exactly how someone BPD can develop a favourite person. Btw I mean borderline personality disorder not bipolar disorder.

Originally(season 1) I was team Haida, bc as a painfully socially awkward and anxious girl I heavily related to having no clue OR guts on approaching a crush. So I really wanted them to work out. But as you said, Haida did nothing, he put no work. Also Retsuko had NEVER in the entire show showed ANY sign of romantic interest in him, even straight up rejected him once and that should have been a good sign for Haida to finally move on. Their couple has NO chemistry or build up(LIKE MUTUAL INTEREST for example). But the show just ignored Retsuko's feelings(or lack of thereof) and gave her to Haida like a good boy trophy. That's just upsetting.

I really wish Tadano was the male romantic interest. I feel like the whole disagreement on "marriage is outdated lol" was done so poorly like I don't belive that they really couldn't talk it out. Originally Retsuko wanted to marry just to escape the tiresome and stressfull office life and Tadano could have given her exactly that and even more.

I remember being stoked back in Season 1 when Retsuko actually Rejects Haida's confession, cause I foolishly thought the show was going to explore the avenue of Healthy Non-same-sex Friends. Like, have Haida realize that even if he never quite loses "liking" Retsuko, he can still move on and do other things with his life, and she can still be a comfortable, positive presence within it without having to obsess over her.
Aggretsuko would have been PERFECT to explore the fact that sometimes romances don't work out, but you can still have a healthy relationship with those involved, even in close proximities like at work. The show does this with Tadano later, but Haida could have been an earlier example of an adult work relationship that semi-continuously deals with it. That's something animation, let alone anime, almost never represents.
And then he just keeps pining, for Seasons. No progress, all status quo or regression. Personally my biggest letdown of an otherwise fantastic show.

Haida didn't go to "help" Retsuko after she got attacked until an app told him a relationship with her is still possible. Plus, Retsuko actually already told him she just sees him as a friend and doesn't want a relationship with him. It's... not a good look, like he doesn't really care about her, more is just obsessed if that makes sense. And as a side note, I say "help" because aggressively yelling at Retsuko to get over it like 10 days after something super traumatic happened isn't the way to support a trauma victim... While telling her to not let the attacker win is good advice, I'd do it a lot more gently and after a lot more time.

They wanted to have the Aggretsuko show go on forever, so whenever something that would change the status quo happened, they came up with some bullshit reason for why it doesn't stick.
The problem I had with Haida dragging Retsuko to karaoke after the stalker incident is that it wasn't about Retsuko's job being on the line or about them not wanting to give up on herself and letting the stalker beat her... It was about Haida losing his way to keep being in her orbit. If they don't have their job in common and she's not living close to him anymore, he doesn't have any way to keep pining after her while never making a move.
I get being spurred into action at the thought of REALLY losing someone, but doing it the way he did right after she lived through a traumatic experience makes him come off as extrmely callous and self-centered, and I don't think that makes him a good dating prospect for anyone.
Haven't seen seasons 5 yet, so maybe I'll pivot on him again, but he's progressively become a character I just don't like, and season 3's ending and all of season 4 just made me lose hope on their relationship as end game.

I'ts very disturbing to have the same action both critized but romantized. Also the ending when he belittles her is not the solution, women do need to feel safe and supported after an attack like that. Season 4 just made it concrete they dont work together at all, Retsuko deserves so much better than an indecisive, slacker and stalker hiena.

Retsuko keeps shutting people off, that's her main characteristic. She's doing that to live up to the mature, capable adult ideal she set for herself. This led to her not communicating her feelings, bottling everything up and lifting some of her frustration through karaoke. Through the seasons we see how she becomes more and more comfortable communicating with others through her singing. Haida KNOWS that Retsuko would just keep falling deeper and deeper because she always, always shuts everyone off. No matter how long she's left alone, she would not be able to get out of the pit she's in. That's not what Retsuko needs. So Haida takes her to the place he knows she can be herself and tries to reach out to her the way he knows and what they share: through music.
Alright, no one can defend S4 and that slap...

so my thing with haida is like... hes so close to being a wonderful character. I think if he took a second to look at his relationship with Restuko in an objective way like the audience does, the revelations that come from that could be fantastic. Like, the show doesnt seem to get what the audience wants. Most of us dont WANT to see them together, or at least not have that tied to the final goal in such a fashion. We WANT to see these characters grow and develop. It seems like every time Haida gets the chance to do that, He and the writers make the conscious effort to ignore that possibility in favor for stagnation and the status quo. Haida is someone i relate to heavily because he has an unhealthy tendency to base all of his self-worth on Restuko and what his relationship is to her. Their chemistry is average at best and horrendous at worst, at least in my opinion, and his chemistry with other characters (Tadano, Inui, hell, even FENNEKO) is more interesting to watch than it is when Restuko. That isn't to say she's boring, far from it, but I groaned when I realized the plot of the new season is just gonna be them miscommunicating (at least from what ive watched so far.)

This could be because we find out Inui and him have a decent amount in common. It is not to diss Retsuko but she doesn't seem to know much about Haida as a person. Even when she asked him to help with learning to play guitar. (She didn't even know guitar and bass guitar are completely different.) Haida literally plays bass guitar. He knows a little of guitar because he use to play an acoustic guitar for a little while. This is one example that shows how little Retsuko knows about Haida.

It reminds me a bit of Yumi's Cells. in both series the main characters grow and develop through each of their relationships.
One Yumi's Cells did differently though was it didn't introduce the end game until the end of the series. So each guy she is with as the series goes feels like they could possibly be endgame. So there is no will they won't they going on. However because he isn't introduced until the very end, even though he is likeable, it felt a bit like he was just some random guy who showed up and snagged her in the end, cause he was I guess. Perhaps if he started off as a background character and slowly became more prominent until becoming a main character at the end might have worked better.
Anyway just some pros and cons about a different way the relationship could have been handled I guess. I also feel like Aggretsuko handled the breakups better too.
