This right here. For the entire pump , you would put a clear funnel in the radiator and if it makes a bunch of bubbles 🍾 when giving it gas its good, If it stays flat its not opening. (The coolant- at operating temp)
Simple, informative & to the point!!! No obnoxious music or cutesy irritating gimmicks. No flash and stayed on the subject at hand...no click bait. Just honest helpful information like it should be.. very refreshing...
I learnt the hard way yesterday 😢 I finally got the truck assembled after a month of engine work and when I finally wanted it to start, the truck started overheating and then found out that the thermostat opened after 215 degrees and it’s rated for 195! Quick trip to AutoZone and got a better thermostat and boom, solved my issue
@changmark you have to pay for it first and check it home/shop or anywhere else you can have or make water boiling. I see that a thermometer is a must based on the comments above. Also check thar you are installing it correctly based on your vehicle.
Very informative. Here at Rev Tech we like to know exactly the fault. Sometimes we in the automotive industry tend to just replace it because it’s just what we do….these are some of the very basics that we miss or don’t try and end up wasting time learning what we forgot and costing the customer money and still don’t end up fixing the problem. Great video. Thank you
Just a tip tho, it can still appear to open and it be the problem, if the wax/guts is bad, worn springs or seals is bad it’ll cause issues but to the naked eye it’ll look like it’s opening and closing normally
I got one in the mail , oem gm , and it was just out of the small gm box rolling around in the shipping bag, (not in a shipping box but a bag), so before wasting a bunch of coolant, even though I know these things. I just like to check, thanks. I didn't like it may have been knocked around shipping but works and looks good.
tested 4 thermostats for my older classic. NONE of them opened at the stamped number! IE: 195 degree only partly opened at 205 degrees . had to hit boiling (212) before it opened more!! Finally, I checked a 180 deg. It opened at 195 deg and was fully open at 205deg. My engine requires a 195deg thermo. My car was always running hot. Don't know what's in there now, but ill be swapping it out! Thats how you check thermostats IMHO. 🙂
Do you test if it's really open up at 82c? I'm concerned as my new thermostat don't start to open at the exact temperature, would it be interfere the engine cooling? As my radiator and condenser fan will try to maintain the engine temp at 85c while ac on
I checked mine today and it was jammed half open lol. Wondering why the bus was over heating. I suspect it is jammed in this position and not letting water through. We changed the water pump for good measure. Also going to change the fan clutch for good measure.
My only issue is that my car doesn't wanna warm up, we replaced it but acts the same thing, it'll warm up when it's hot outside but it takes it sweet time. But when it's 50°F out, it won't go past the halfway mark on the gauge
I tested two and they both open with boiling hot water and close with cold. Its still running hot. Could my bleeding tube that run to the thermostat housing be plugged up??
Great video Pal… I did this method and it work fine but I took the thermostat out and rinse with water and put it back it in the boiling water, the thermostat didn’t open at all…. I believe my thermostat is not functioning properly
Do you have overheating problems? You should stick with the stock thermostat, engines are designed to run at their operating temperature to reduce wear. If you have overheating problems don't just lower the thermostat temp, fix the actual problem.
My car isnt overheating. Its when i get on the highway only my temp gausge needle starts lowering to cold.. im getting the air out the system but maybe not it all.🤔
why go through all that if your car overheats crank the heater to maximum if the temperature gauge goes down with the heat on then change the thermostat, worked for me for the past 30 years
A couple things to be mindful here: A) never pour boiling water, or near boiling water, in glassware like that. B) Stant states that thermostats will START to open at their printed number, not be "fully" open. Fully open is 15-20F higher than what's printed. You've tested that it's fully open at 200F, yes, but you didn't test when it starts to open.
I want to know what make , model and year car you say takes a couple minutes to pull a thermostat. I guess if you don’t count the 20 min drain time ( after the half hour finding the drain) removing air box and snorkel, maybe a bracket or two (10 min more) then use your articulating tools arms and wrists to locate the 2or3 bolts holding the housing on ( variable time here if the engine is cooled off or not) to test the thermostat!? Throw it out after all that ……… oh I see this video was posted pre RUclips in the late 70’s
As the world's dumbest mechanic may I say please, thank you, and may I have another sir? I'm sitting here looking at a rusted fully heated thermostat and I go wait a second I don't even know what it's supposed to look like afterwards and this diagram on the manual sucks cuz it doesn't look anything like the thermostat.... in my mind at least. 🤣
He's wrong. When the thermostat opens it allows hot water to flow from the engine to the radiator, not from the radiator into the engine. He should know better.
Thanks guys for watching!! What method do you prefer when testing a thermostat?
This right here. For the entire pump , you would put a clear funnel in the radiator and if it makes a bunch of bubbles 🍾 when giving it gas its good, If it stays flat its not opening. (The coolant- at operating temp)

ALWAYS test a Tstat BEFORE putting it in the vehicle ! I have had new ones fail right out of the box !
Thank you for this advice. I don't know a damn thing about cars but I'm trying very hard to learn as much as possible. Little tips like this help

I shouldve done that. My check wngine light kept coming back. I do hope its not the new thermostat

Thanks so much mate! Simple, informative, and straight to the point!
Thanks for being to the point. Exactly what I needed to know
Good quality video. Short, to the point, and good quality. Thank you!!!!

Fab just what I wanted to see, what it looks like in the open / closed state. Off to find a pan cheers
How long did it take to reach its fully open state?

This narrowed it down a lot really helpful video thank you
Thanks brother the was the best video ever it was very helpful and saved me alotta money... You're the best!!!!
I like the usa flag behind you
Greetings for you from Iraq 🤗

what temp did it crack open at?, what temp was it wide open? what temp did it close at as water cooled
Very helpful, thank you very very much 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I’m testing my new thermostat but it doesn’t open with the boiling water. Any thoughts?
its bad...
Wish I tested my new one before I put it in 😂 good video
Thanks for the lecture. Soo informative. Appreciate it.

Does a nissan sentra 1.8 even need the thermostat in it in S California?
This was helpful. Thanks!
sir do we have any standard gap for the opening of each thermostat ? please let me know about it
Awesome thanks!👍
Helped a lot! Thanks
Thank you for this. Learning how to do simple fixes and diagnostics to save money. This just saved me about $300 or more.
I tested two and they both open with boiling hot water and close with cold. Its still running hot. Could my bleeding tube that run to the thermostat housing be plugged up??
Mine open like you did on your video only open about maybe 8th of an inch is that still mean it opens
Great video!
Great video Pal… I did this method and it work fine but I took the thermostat out and rinse with water and put it back it in the boiling water, the thermostat didn’t open at all…. I believe my thermostat is not functioning properly
my factory car calls for a thermostat that opens at 192 but the one i bought is 195 is that bad?
wonderful ! thanks for your video
Awesome video, thank you
Perfect ❤
couple minutes to pull it out? mine took 3 hours to remove.
Wow thanks. Now I feel dumb ass hell. Learn something new everyday
Excellent!!
bought 3 motrad 180 did the water test, only one opened at 182 other 2 over 200
SLAYER!!!
Awesome!
My question is if i take the thermostat from its housing do i have to replace the seal or i could just pop it right back?
Have been asking the internet this exact same question all day and can not find an answer haha
If the seal is damaged then yes.
What temp thermostat would you recommend for an 80 chevy 1 ton dually with a 427 and a truck 4 speed? Pulls a gooseneck trailer.
Google it dawg
@@downloadingutubes Looking for "his" specific recommendation, not a thousand different Google answers.
@@BriggsStratton11 google correctly bossman

Many thanks for this one 😎
Thanks so much man!!!
Good video, short and to the point. Thanks.
thanks a lot...... from Jordan
Why not just replace the $25 part if you’re already pulling it?
Because it's usually easy to take out yourself, new ones can also often be bad as well, why spend $25 you don't need to spend?
Thanks man
Thanks for the video!
Thank you bro!
so helpfull
Nice video, thanks!
Thanks Peter Parker
Coolant flows from the engine to the radiator through the thermostat, nor from the radiator to the engine.
Thank you
My car isnt overheating. Its when i get on the highway only my temp gausge needle starts lowering to cold.. im getting the air out the system but maybe not it all.🤔
Its seem stuck open, did you fix that?

What if i turn the heat on and the car is still hot
thanks
That's cool
A couple minutes .never did one on a 3.5 nissan murano
Mine passed this test but still was no good. I don’t understand

You've tested that it's fully open at 200F, yes, but you didn't test when it starts to open.
If your Tstat isn't fully open within 5 degrees of the stated then you'll have a blown engine. Test them and see.
Yes it should start opening at the written temp, if not then its a trouble.
OMG! Yes you can pour boiling water in Pyrex or most kitchen glassware! They are specifically designed for that.
It’s the internet police.
My bowls always explode when I pour soup in them. I wear safely glasses when I chili after an incident in 2007.
Did your wife ever find out you used her bowl???
the tshirt ? where???
Just saved me from buying 2 thermostats for my boat! $60 for 2
This guy looks like my local storage owner

This won't work for my car. Boiling point of water at my altitude is higher than the temperature rating on my thermostat.
Thanks for the tip ps. Fucken slayerrrrrrrrr
👍
Better nog speed up the video
Time can also be an issue
Cool trick...now I have to get the thermostat off my car
