  • The Scythe Ninja 5 is truly a massive CPU cooler with an incredible amount of cooling area. Rich and Jon put it through their CPU cooler test to find out what this monster of a cooler is made of!
    Testing:
    In this video we test air speed, fan noise generated, and how quickly the cooler can dump a heat load in 2 minutes starting at 87c at both full and half fan speed.

    This cooler is insane. I got it for a 3950x and it actually keeps it cool while not even breaking the noise floor in my room.
    With my everyday fan curves, I idle ~33 C and sustain a cool 65 at full CPU load (looping cinebench since this monster cpu finishes it in 30 seconds), bout 70C with repeated TimeSpy runs
    Those might not sound like standout numbers, but remember this is all silently air-cooled on a 16 core cpu, and these numbers are coming from a week in August where the room is about 80F ambient. Those are incredible numbers, all things considered.

    Just ordered one of these to replace an NH-U12S - I'll probably have to remove my RAM heatsinks to get the front fan low enough :)
    Huge dissipation area and mass if it can dump enough heat not to get to the 90-degree ceiling... I'm curious as to how much better it would do with static-pressure optimized fans.

    • @ryanjofre
      @ryanjofre Год назад

      I just got a high static pressure Scythe wonder snail. I’m impressed so far.
      H.S.P. Fans are going to give you optimal performance on the Ninja 5 but it’s probably not enough to justify buying more fans versus the excellent Kaze (Kah-Zey) flex fans that come with the 5.

    • @2GuysTek
      @2GuysTek  4 года назад

      It's really hard to compare these coolers because their approach to cooling is so different. The NH-U12A is a marvel, it's ability to cool quietly in a compact space is really unmatched. And the Ninja 5 is just a behemoth of near-passive cooling. If you have the space in your case and you want to save a little money the Ninja 5 is a good choice - but beware of it's size and the possibility of it interacting with your RAM! On the other side, you won't have the clearance issues with the NH-U12A so it works in practically any situation - but for some people the fan color scheme is too much to handle. :-) Either way both will keep your rig cool for sure! Thanks for watching!

    I’m not a gamer, more of an enterprise guy. But in January 2020 my brother in law sent my wife his old PC and it has a Sabertooth Mobo with an AMD FX9590 and 16gigs on it, along with his older Oculus Rift setup. The tower was cooled by a Corsair H110 or some 240 AIO cooler if theirs. In any case, the computer has never been stable enough to use for consecutive days let alone a week straight. The Corsair is what I ended up targeting for replacement, and just put in a Ninja 5. The results so far are impressive. Average temps in the Corsair without a load were 25-40c and with a gaming load would run 55-75c or higher. Good luck on restarting the machine once you shut it down. The pump was either running dry or had something in the line obstructing it, I’m not sure. We rotated the radiator, elevated it above the pump, but ultimately it would almost never get around the POST, and if it did it would run hot for your session.
    After 6 months of on and off unpredictable use, undeclared our independence on July 4 and bought this cooler after reading many reviews and watching a ton of videos
    Installed it last night, and it is an absolute BEAST! Added two (for a total of four) 3-pin non-PWM fans for case cooling (1200 rpm) and the little 800 rpm fans on the Ninja itself are keeping the 9590 at 11-29c without a load and 35-60c with the same gaming load as used with the Corsair.
    I’m going to stress-test it today and see how it goes. Thank you for posting a honest review that helped tame that hot 220w tdp FX9590.

      Can u provide stress test (like OCCT small data set) and the temp vs power consumption info? I have a Lucifer and I might need to buy a smaller cooler cuz of the matx case I just bought. Fuma has better results but due to the larger fin area ninja 5 should perform better with same fans, in theory.

      @@DavidHieber Thank you so much. Just in case others are interested, the test of OCCT v6.1.0 is running with large data set, with a max power of 78w~, the max of CPU is 75 C. Assuming avg room temp of 25C, the delta is about 50C. I am not sure why OCCT only shows 78w when F9590 is indeed a 220w TDP cpu. If OP is using a decent air flow case, honestly, the result doesn't look any good.
      I currently have Deepcool Lucifer v2, swapped the fan for a single cougar vortex 1500rpm 120mm pwm fan. Case is define C TG. The air flow is medium since I strongly restrained the fan speed to reduce noise. My room temp is 30C, and under 140w use, max cpu is 84C, which is 54C delta. With 190w peak power, 10 min OCCT small data set, my max is 93C, has 63C delta. FYI if anyone interested. However, ninja 5 is still my top choice if I ever need a sub 160mm/155mm cpu cooler, since my lucifer has a 163mm tower and 168mm height with the 140mm fan.
      Thanks again David Hieber for the valuable info!

    Do you think this cooler perform better than the fuma 2 ? Thanks guys

    • @2GuysTek
      @2GuysTek  4 года назад

      While we haven't specifically tested it against the Fuma 2, the spec sheets show the Ninja 5 is physically larger than the Fuma 2 so at a minimum you should expect to get slightly better cooling out of the Ninja based on surface area alone.. But, the Ninja is so much larger than the Fuma 2 that you might have issues using it in your build. That and the fact that the Ninja 5 will have RAM clearance issues in most cases, I'd recommend going for the Fuma 2. Good luck and thanks for the question! -R

    • @2GuysTek
      @2GuysTek  4 года назад

      The clip should clip on to any standard 120mm fan, it's essentially just a simple wire retaining clip that has some flex so you shouldn't have an issue getting it attached to any number of 120mm fans. Thanks for the question!

    What would have better cooling performance/lower noise between this and the Noctua NH-D15?

    • @2GuysTek
      @2GuysTek  4 года назад +1

      The Ninja 5 is almost entirely silent to the point where it almost acts like a passive cooler. The NH-D15 is going to be louder than the Ninja but the NH-D15 with those fantastic Noctua fans will have a bit more cooling under the most intense heat loads. You didn’t mention what chip you’re cooling so it’s hard to tell if you need more headroom or not. Either cooler will work great for you though.

    • @2GuysTek
      @2GuysTek  4 года назад +1

      I took a look at the components you've listed here and I think there is a good possibility you'll have issues with RAM clearance. Your Tomahawk board has 4 RAM DIMM slots and it's likely that the Ninja 5 will overhang at least two of them when installed. It's possible you can get everything to fit if you have only 2 sticks of RAM installed in the furthest slots, but if you have more than 2 AND/OR you want install more than 2 DIMMs in the future you'll have to change out the cooler.
      If the Ninja 5 is something you really want to own then you'll need to look at changing your RAM out for something more low-profile to make everything work together. Thanks for the comment! Good Luck! -R

      You're absolutely correct about the slot order you should install your RAM into! I only mention filling the two furtherest slots because with the Ninja 5 you'd likely not have a choice. That being said, most motherboards will still recognize all the RAM you install, even if it isn't in the proper slot order, you just don't get the best performance. Thanks for subscribing!
