Initial Thoughts & Seasoning of the Char Griller Akorn Auto Kamado

- I always prefer smoking with real wood and charcoal, as it adds a very distinctive flavor profile that I believe you cannot achieve with a pellet grill.
So when I saw the new Char-Griller Akorn Auto Kamado Grill on sale for 50% percent off, I knew I had to get it.
This Grill gives you the convenience and simplicity of a pellet grill with the authentic smokey flavor you get from cooking over real wood and charcoal.

Oh, it's just as fuel efficient or more so than a ceramic kamado
I got mine on clearance for$224. Just finished assembly and seasoned/cooked on it yesterday. Great cooker!
I agree Dale! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!
That looks super cool! I’ve used a mini WSM with a bbq guru for years, and just recently upgraded to an 18.5” WSM. I was thinking how cool it would be if the fan controller was built in to a charcoal smoker. And here it is! Thanks for the great review!

Great review!
Mine will be delivered tomorrow. It's on sale at Wal-Mart! 50% off. $224
mine will be too
Mine was aswell. Super worth the discounted price
Did I seriously just miss the sale?!? 😢 any idea how often it goes on sale?
@@juliorodriguez6623 keep a lookout on Slickdeals. That's where I saw the sale.
@@juliorodriguez6623 It just went off sale 2 days ago
Just got one yesterday. Fedex gave it a free dent in the lid, so gotta deal with exchange etc. smoked some chicken thighs, turned out excellent. I can see this’ll be a fun and versatile cooker. Afterwards, got a dang ERp error, temp probe seems to have a short at the crimp 🙄. Hopefully no issues with the replacement when it gets here 🤞🏻. Ordered a Akorn Jr for a back-up and travel grill too.
So far I have been impressed with the Auto Kamado. Looking forward to more cooks on it for sure! Thanks for stopping by!
Yep. The wire is fragile. Turn it sideways and not facing down. That’ll get rid of the crimping. Customer service is great though. They’ll replace it no problem.
@@gardeningandgrowing6357 after arguing with them via email back n forth, they finally sent one.
@@UABFWSS I got the second one pretty quick. Hopefully turning it sideways and not facing down gets rid of the crimping wire issue. When it’s working it’s great. Good luck.
Just ordered one from walmart. I just dont get the smoke flavor from the pellet grills. When i use it i will leave a message. Thanks for the info man
So far I am impressed with this grill, hope you are too. Thanks for stopping by!
Great overview! Thanks for the shout out!
You are welcome Rob. Thanks for your great videos featuring this grill, made it an easy choice to purchase, especially at half off! Thanks for stopping by!
If your doing low and slow with the heat shield how do you refill charcoal if you need
The Auto Kamado is very efficient with charcoal. I have used the same fill for multiple cooks, so I doubt you will need to refill. Worse case is you use BBQ gloves to remove the heat shield to add more, but I don't think it will be necessary if you start with a full amount.
Nice review. Works great. I’ve cooked on it all summer. Overshoots temp sometimes but it moderates. Being insulated I should be able to cook on it in winter in the north. I did have to get the temp probe replaced twice. Wire is fragile and got erp error.
That one from Walmart was bought on September 21, 2022 and then returned. That is a used item and might not even have all of the parts. There is a reason why someone bought it and then returned it.
I assume you are referring to the date on the Walmart webpage I showed in the video. You are correct, I purchased that from the same computer on Sept 21st. I made this video several days later after receiving it, and made this video. If you look carefully the bottom of that screen is blurred out. When I recorded it I didn't realize my home address was showing on the bottom right of the screen. That happened because I was still signed in to my Walmart account. To protect my privacy I went back and blurred that out. This was a new unit, packed very well and not missing anything. Sorry for the confusion.
@@SmokingBBQ Thank you. That does make sense now that I know it was you who previously purchased this item. So did you completely take it apart and replace it back in the box before returning it to Walmart? And did you cook on it at all?
@@SmokingBBQ I see that they already sold that one. I went to Walmart's website and could not find it any more.
@@carllove3705 I did not return it, I brought it and still have it. I have cooked a few things in it, and have been impressed. Stay tuned for more videos.
Great video thanks man

Got one on sale a few weeks ago. Only done 3 short cooks so far. I’m doing a Boston Butt this week end.
Let me know how it comes out, thanks for stopping by!
@@SmokingBBQ Smoked an 8 lb butt today. It was so much easier than using my offset. I’ll use more wood chunks next time to get a deeper smoke on it.
Would love to see some cooks on this, and follow up thoughts after some experience with it!
I’m curious how the fan will hold up with very high temp cooks like pizza…what is the upper operating temp according to the manual?
600 degrees is the hottest temp they recommend. You will definitely see me cooking on this more, make sure to subscribe! Thanks for stopping by!
