Thanks for this! I was really struggling to get this faction down. Your advice about the Flying Polyps really made a huge difference in my game. I won versus Cthulhu and the Tcho-Tchos thanks to this video!
Nice video. Probably my favorite aspect of Crawling Chaos is that he's like a vulture. If enemies kill each other in battles he can almost always fly in a cultist and a small monster to grab up empty gates. Black Goat might still be better at that with her ghouls but Crawling Chaos can snatch up and then defend gates with minimal effort thanks to his super defensive spellbooks.
Black Goat is definitely the pain to my Chaos strategy, avatar is annoying to everyone but feels very annoying to me, especially if they rest of the players manage to assassinate my nyarlathotep so I have no way to kill Shub. But yeah, just when someone is even slightly vulnerable, Chaos swoops (literally, heh) in and makes it that much worse
Yup. Typically you use it at 1ish power. Did I say otherwise? If so, I'll add a correct because it was a mispeak. Thanks for the comment. In the gameplay we just posted I frustrated the Crawling Chaos player because he didn't quite grasp this rule.
@@GreyWizardInsights I know this is old, but I think he was referring to the part where you said to round 2 summon Nyar, then Thousand form when everyone thinks you are out. Although if you can pull off a capture in round 1, and get a gate down, perhaps. Trying to plan my opening moves for my game later today!
I played Crawling Chaos recently after it being years since playing CW. I had a hell of a time doing anything. It was 3 player and I'm wondering if CC are weaker at lower player counts, but I'm sure my inexperience attributed to it. I barely got half of my spell book. I could never come close to capturing a cultist, Black Goat would always teleport in it's mamma, and Cthulhu would always devolve. Flying Pulps wouldn't have helped there, so not sure how you get around such a thing with such stingy players. In general, Cthulhu was left to just build up a massive army, I was trying to keep Black Goat in check, but any move I made was met with Mamma teleporting in, I got Nyaralothotep in play and that's when Cthulhu decided to finally make his move and wiped me out, hardly get any power for killing Cthulhu, I never recovered.
Unfortunately, Crawling Chaos struggles "more" with larger number of players, not less. You generally should have Nyarlathotep second phase, what phase did you bring him out? Great Cthulhu shouldn't have been able to wipe you out at that point and you should have been able to Thousand Forms to get some power. At higher player counts, its easier for players to avoid paying you the power, at lower level, they're usually forced to just let you have the power.
@@GreyWizardInsights okay, just my inexperienced, poor playing then, hah. There was one very experienced player and he pretty much toyed with us as Black Goat. I was having a hell of a time just trying to stop him from completely dominating the map. I really thought the Cthulhu player would come in and knock him down instead of wiping me out. I didnt have enough defensive units with Nyaral, didn't have polyps. Was basically treading water all game. I did get Nyarl out second round, but I guess I didn't use it right, anytime I moved on any Black Goat location he'd teleport his stuff away.
Nyar has a rough beginning and can be hard to catch up with if you fall behind. You're expected to get at least a little extra power from Thousand Forms so that third round you can try and drag your feet long enough that at the end of the turn you use it to get a burst of power which you then use to fly in and attack a GOO. At that point, you either get your elder signs or you get more power. The problem is, of course, that Black Goat is really good at summoning 0 cost ghouls to avoid you getting enough time to do this, but even then, a good roll can force them to let you. Also, you can build your gates far away from other factions so you can pick on them, but they can't pick on you. Black Goat can try to avatar in to your remote places, but as long as you have a monster there, he's at risk of losing Shub, and losing Shub is as bad as losing Nyar. Good luck!
Oh man, I'm thinking about it, but I'll never have any peace in my group again once I've broken down how to play them better. It may not be next Tuesday (I'm thinking of a different game video, I'm playing a lot of Mystic Vale lately), but the following Tuesday should be Black Goat.
Roland Bruno The Key is to get Red Sign asap and use Dark Young to secure gates. Use Shub's Avatar power to kick cultists off gates and plop Dark Young on those gates.
In my group, Crawling Chaos has never won a game. We feel it has several design flaws. It demands a lot of power (mainly because of spellbook requirements) and you NEED to put Nyarlatothep in risk constantly to harvest that power via The Harbinger... but that also means an enemy GOO can kill Nyarlatothep at the same time. Your signature/cheap attack consist of moving Nyarlatothep, then calling the Hunting Horrors as meat shield, then unlimited battle...but those hunting horrors that are supposed to be expendable cost 3 each one! You can´t really afford to summon them again on top of fulfilling your spellbook requirements, not to mention losing Nyarlatothep at any time almost means an auto defeat. Uh, also Hastur can decide at any moment he wants to annihilate you and you can do nothing about it... I think it would be more balanced if either the spellbooks were cheaper or Nyarlatothep didn´t cost 10, I don´t get why he is one of the most expensive GOOs, he would be fine at 8 power like many others are or even cheaper, he is just not that powerful to justify that price. Do you guys think I have a point? Or do you feel more optimistic about CC?

Yaas, they should fear the flying polyps!

With thousand forms, if you are out of power, you cant use it. Its in the rules if you are out, you cant even play 0 cost powers.

Great video, very useful :)
Thank you. :)
When you get a pain after a battle with this faction, can you use flight to retreat up to 2 spaces away?
NYARTHLHOTEP FAN CLUB!!!!!!
If their GOO kills or pains Cthulhu do you gain 5 power (half of 10) or 2 power (half of 4)?
2 Power was our group's understanding. Since he only ever costs 10 to get him out the first time, his "official" cost is 4.
@@TylerDeLisle That's correct. Once Cthulhu is out, his cost becomes 4 for the rest of the game.
