Hate to break it to all the people that commented below.. But this does work in a pinch. Someone stole my battery charger an I had one of these for electrolysis an used it to start my 2001 Mustang this morning. It was clicking. So it wasn't that dead so I fig it would work. An it did !! Good job.
This won't charge your 12v battery more than 30% because the voltage is same or less(11.98volts). for a 12v battery you must have at least 14v to charge it to 90%. The voltage of the charger should be higher than the battery voltage, this is a rule in electronics.
True enough. It will, however charge an automotive battery sufficiently for the battery to start a vehicle &, albeit just barely, provide switching voltage to the alternator which can then finish the job. I would obviously recommend disconnecting the diy charger before cranking to avoid damaging it. It's a close margin, but a dependable one.
Good work To protect the ATX again short circuit. It will be better to connect the Green wire (power on) to Relay contact with black wire. And to energize the relay with the 12 v or 5 v accorditly.
For best charging batteries you have to use at least 2 mode charging. Boost charge (for 12V batteries around 14.5Vdc) and Float Charge (for 12V batteries around 13.5Vdc) . And the charging current should be maximum %20 of battery capacity. for 9Ah battery it is max 1.8 Amp. Otherwise battery life drops down or cant be charge as well. And i am ignoring temperature charge compesation .
You need 14,4 to 14,6V to charge it full. Then it has to stop or hold 13,6-13,8V so there is no constant hydrogen production and loss of water. Then you need to control the current when charging, so you will not damage small batteries. You need to modify the electronics for that. That's possible but I do not know someone who has done it on youtube.
You need to modify the bridge voltage in the feedback between secondary and primary in the power supply , to set voltage to 13.8c or 14.8v. Look at the Varicap Diode 431. Or, install a DC-DC converter inside the power supply.

All you have to do as shown is connect green wire to black earth wire which switches on the supply. The output between the yellow and black will be 12 volts. A clever thing to have shown would be how to open Power supply and increase the constant voltage output to between 13.8 volts for sealed lead acid batteries and 14.4 for flooded lead acid car batteries by changing the voltage regulator components. This as it is total waste of time as batteries will never get to full charge without this being done.
