  • In this video, I'll start with a quick overview of the Cross River Rail Project, and explain why its needed.
    You'll then see a new bridge being built at Breakfast Creek, and the new maintenance facility at Mayne Yard North that opened in early 2023.
    I'll explain the changes at Mayne Yard East and reveal how the Cross River Rail Lines will pass through this area.
    I then cover the new rail bridge that has been built for Exhibition Station, and the significant track changes that have happened on either side of this bridge. I'll also explain the design of the new Exhibition Station and how it will work.
    Next is the Northern Tunnel Portal where the Cross River Rail lines go underground. You'll see some wonderful views of this tunnel portal and I'll explain the new tracks being built around it.
    I finish off by showing you what is above the tunnels on the approach to Roma Street Station.

    Hi Paul, thanks for sharing a very interesting video about the Brisbane cross river rail line. When this is completed, Brisbane will have a underground rail area similar to that in Sydney and Melbourne. I gather when the old Exhibition station was not in use, trains just passed it without stopping on their journeys. I can't remember seeing it when up in Brisbane back in August 1973., though back in those days, Roma Street lines and South Brisbane lines were not even connected. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  Год назад +1

      Hi Rob, yes that's right, although there is already a small underground section from just before Fortitude Valley to just after Central Station. I think that opens in 1978, along with the Merivale Bridge and the line to South Brisbane. The Exhibition Loop doesn't have any regular suburban trains, which is the main reason that Exhibition Station didn't have a regular service. Regional trains past through, but they don't stop at any of the suburban stations anyway!

    Exhibition _did_ have a regular passenger service, but it was so long ago that there is no living memory of it. Between 1882 (when the Sandgate line opened) and 1890 (when the direct line from Brisbane Central to Mayne was opened) the "Exhibition Loop" was the only track to the north.
    Bowen Park opened with the line, and was renamed as Exhibition in 1885.
    So it was possible to catch regular passenger trains to Exhibition station for five years!

    One major criticism I have of this part of the project is that there is no attempt to connect the new Exhibition station with the hospitals and medical/education precinct just 200m away. At 21:08 you can see the station bottom right, and the busway top left. Several of Queensland's major hospitals and medical facilities are on the other side of the busway, and a path or ramp between these would have massively increased the amenity of the station at (presumably) a reasonable cost. As far as I know, no reasons have been presented for why this hasn't happened.

    • @pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042
      @pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042 Год назад +3

      Cost. It's the same reason why they have avoided doing everything else they could have done at the other stations. Boggo Road underground station was originally going to have a direct connection to the park road station platforms, they got rid of that. Albert street station was originally going to have several entrances up and down Albert street, they got rid of that and now it only has one at each end of the station (which isn't actually that bad). Roma Street was originally going to have underground bus platforms, to replace the existing ones. They got rid of them. The southern entrance to the CRR was originally going to be two separate tunnels to allow for different non-conflicting operations with the 3 tracks to the south, now it has the one tunnel with two tracks and trains on the western track can't get into the CRR while allowing trains on the centre track to continue to park road. In fact trains on the Western track can't get into the CRR at all, unless they are moved to platform 2 at Dutton park before the station. (I am not sure whether this is permanent but seems pretty stupid.

    • @JamesFFiT
      @JamesFFiT Год назад +1

      @Secretlyanothername yes I agree I’ve found little on it. There is a bridge connection costing $8m in the budget from the station to Gregory terrace, but why not directly across the park and over to the busway station which will be a metro station. They are spending half a billion at connecting the train to metro station at the Gabba but nothing on the Northside regarding an easy transfer/connection. From the plans I’m not even confident CRR trains will stop at Albion! 2 stops away from Roma or 3 from Adelaide St but time will tell. Looks like they go express to Eagle Junction on the CRR map!
      The RBWH busway station needs a direct connection across the park to Exhibition Station considering Brisbane Metro will terminate here. I don’t believe RBWH has enough capacity anyway for being a metro terminus as heaps of people already transfer here on the current bus route 66 which metro will replace and I often wait 2-3 buses between 3-4pm they come past always full of students and no standing room to get on a local bus.

    • @JamesFFiT
      @JamesFFiT Год назад +1

Must do a trip to Brissy for similar in the future - I wonder if the subsequent easing of train traffic across the bridge into Roma Street might allow a more civilised timing of the Sydney-Brisbane service?

      Thanks Tacit. Great to hear that you lived in Brisbane as a child. Yes definitely worth a trip. The city is changing a lot, with several new pedestrian river crossings, and the city skyline is pretty impressive now. Possibly! I really want to do the XPT from Brisbane to Sydney, but I'll wait until the summer, as I'm keen to do the first bit in daylight. I thought the departure time problem was only because of capacity on the shared dual gauge track across the Brisbane River as peak suburban services begin; but looking back at some Railpage forum comments on the topic from 2016 (around when they made the timetable about an hour earlier) it says there is also only a single dual gauge track for many kilometres (albeit with some passing loops). Apparently QLD also use that track for inbound Gold Coast trains, which creates conflicts if the southbound XPT is running even a bit late.
      Technically it is possible to connect with the Melbourne XPT, but I think you'd need to be optimistic about on-time running. I've heard some used to transfer at Strathfield to give it a greater margin, but that's no longer possible now the Melbourne XPT goes via Sydenham and Revesby.
      For the trip north I always used a sleeper. Nice to wake up just as you are approaching the border loop. In spite of their shortcomings, there's something satisfyingly classical about the XPT. I've always enjoyed my time on them. Have a great time when you do the trip.

      Hi Ryan. My understanding is that the doors are provided for a number of purposes. Some of those (like tunnel security, containment of station air conditioning, and reduction of piston effect draughts as trains arrive allowing faster acceleration and deceleration) are only relevant underground; while other reasons (notably edge safety and departure monitoring safety) are relevant everywhere. I believe Brisbane will be using trains with crews on this line, whereas Sydney Metro is all driverless. That means in Brisbane departure safety remains achieved largely through crew monitoring, whereas in Sydney Metro the platform doors and narrow platform gaps achieve a similar effect.

    in case you didn't know, stub tunnels have been built to the north of Roma Street to eventually link up to the Proposed Northwest Corridor. There is still a lot of debate about the corridor, as the state government wants a surface-level rail link along it, whilst the council is instead insisting on an underground Toll Highway or busway along the North West Transportation Corridor. Then there is the Federal Government who wants both council and the state government to stop fighting and build a multi-modal corridor. People on the Northside have been furious about it for years and just want the damn thing built, but then they are also the NIMBYs. Personally, I think are multimodal Underground Highway and a surface-level rail and bikeway would be the solution. My reasoning for the North West Transport Corridor to be a multi-modal Underground Highway and Surface Rail Corridor is because the North Coast line is starting to get congested between Strathpine and Albion whilst Gympie Road which links the Airport link Tunnel and Lutwyche Road to the Gateway and Bruce Highway is also getting severely congested. So really, it is a no-brainer.

    This is the least exciting part of the project, but it's actually the most important part.
    Brisbane has five rail lines approaching the CBD from the south providing capacity for 78 trains per hour. But only three of these lines travel over the Merivale Bridge, and thanks to capacity constraints elsewhere on the network, these lines only account for less than 40% of the total capacity (ie 30 trains per hour) from the south and west. Until they fix capacity constraints elsewhere on the southside, Merivale Bridge won't be an enourmous problem.
    With 78 trains per hour of capacity from the south and west, and 84 trains per hour of capacity from the north, the real issue is that the city stations only have a capacity of 48 trains per hour (in each direction). This means that even where the outer lines are not capacity constrained, they are still constrained by the lack of train paths through the CBD stations.
    At the same time, there is a third pair of tracks connecting the northern half of the network to the southwest part of the network, via Exhibition. But they don't get used by in service trains because any trains coming down the exhibition loop must either a) continue into the city tunnels at Roma Street - reoccupying the space we were trying to free up, or b) turn west towards Milton, bypassing all the main downtown stations (which are the destination of most passengers).
    Cross River Rail is largely about finding a way to bring trains down the exhibition line and into the city without blocking up space in the existing city tunnels. The fact that it crosses the river and ultimately emerges at Dutton Park is kinda secondary. I mean, I'm sure they looked into it and realised that they will probably get around to fixing capacity constraints between Park Road and Beenleigh one day, and when that happens, having the new tunnel continue through to the southside will be useful. But until then, the exhibition loop is actually the most relevant part of the project.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  Год назад

      Hi Paul,
      Thanks for this information and your insights.
      You're right, The section from Roma Street to Bowen Hills via Central is the real bottleneck here.
      And the Exhibition loop doesn't really help, as it feeds into the same bottleneck at Roma Street, which is why it is only used for regional, freight and out of service trains.
      With the southern tunnel portal, I guess it was a case of finding a good place, and the old railway line close to Dutton Park station made sense.
      I think serving Woolloongabba was an important requirement too, especially as it will be a venue for the 2032 Olympic games, so that probably factored into the final routing as well.
      Thanks for explaining this. It certainly helped improve my understanding of why CRR is being built.

  • @nevyn1854
    @nevyn1854 Год назад +3

    Lol, there are a great number of deficiencies in the SE QLD rail network that are probably more important than the cross river rail. The fact that there is only a single track running from Kuraby to Beenleigh is a serious bottle neck in the network severely limiting rail travel between the Gold Coast and Brisbane and creating massive road congestion, which the state government plan to fix by duplicating the entire motorway instead of the small stretch of rail line. Any increased capacity at this end of the line will be irrelevant for the majority of the southern end of the network.
    The northern line out of Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast and rest of the entire state of Queensland is similarly a single line of track. For over a decade the State government have been "expanding' the duplicated line. The current plan for and additional 10kms or so of duplicated track from Beerburrum to Beerwah has still not seen a single sleeper laid. And even so, the benefits of this small extension are limited at best and accessible to only a small number of commuters. Duplication of the line to larger population areas such as Nambour or even Gympie are not even being considered currently.
    Ands the ridiculous idea still being touted, that Queensland can build an entirely new train line from Beerwah to Maroochydore by 2032 in time for the Olympics is the most laughable infrastructure claim I can recall in recent memory.
    As with most states, the only projects and people that seem to matter are those in the metropolitan areas. That being said I can see the Victroria's expansion clearly does provide benefits to the system outside of Melbourne itself.
