YOU GOTTA GET TO MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE OR LAST STAND OF THE WRECKERS. Edit: Also read the Christmas special. Starscream's bit in it absolutely killed me
Yes, finally, you are doing the IDW TF comics. I highly recommend reading the Wreckers Trilogy as well as More Then Meets The Eye and Lost Light, Megatron Origins, they are one of the best comics from this continuity.
"Origins: Megatron" especially since that aspect of his character has since been integrated into his mythos particularly in the Aligned Continuity (Transformers Prime).
@@tanyaharmon6739 really dude, the Autobots are the bad guys, the decepticons is a freedom fighters, maybe they are psychopaths but their goals are nice, Cybertron was under a corrupted government of the autobots
@@tanyaharmon6739 i like him too but still, the Autobots are the bad guys but the way that they have been introduce to us make them look good, and because the humans help them. Why decepticons kills humans? Easy, from their perspective the autobots find a planet rich of energy and resources and the dominant race of the planet let them us it and even helping them.
Thanks for dedicating a proper segment to E.J. Su, I feel he gets a bit overlooked in the fandom, but he made this fairly pedestrian first stories look like a million bucks, and Megatron wouldn't have been as intimidating a presence without his efforts. Also, as has been said, the real star of IDW's comic universe is MTMTE/Lost Light... and everything James Roberts and Nick Roche, basically. Not to say they're the only worthwhile things, but they definitely stand out, not just within this universe, but among comics of the decade in general.
Haven't read them either but I know the comics just delve into so many places with the story that you would just never expect the franchise to go and it works
2:46 So another fun thing about Death's Head is he also had run ins with the Doctor, when Marvel published Dr. Who comics, so much so that in the series "The Incomplete-Death's Head," it's revealed the Doctor is responsible for taking the character from the Transformers Universe, and putting him in the main Marvel Universe. He's also responsible for shrinking Death's Head from giant robot to human-ish size
The original Marvel Comics run of "The TRANSFORMERS" never lost a license to publish. It continued for a few years after the original toyline and cartoon themselves had ceased production. When Hasbro decided to relaunch the brand as "The TRANSFORMERS: Generation 2", Marvel Comics was right there working alongside them. Sadly, Generation 2 did not have the stream that its predecessor had, and the comic concluded after a 12-issue run. My question to you is this: Why are you reviewing the beginning of IDW's 2005 run now? As you mentioned, it ran for 13 years and was re-rebooted in 2019. Why not delve into the newer continuity instead?!?
The transformers, the Power Rangers And Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Have a credible comics just too bad to save the camp he said about Captain planet, Freakazoid, the magic school bus or gargoyles!
2:59 Death's Head also appeared in other Marvel comics across the Marvel multiverse for this reason, including Doctor Who Magazine (Earth-5556), the Dragon's Claws of Earth-5555, had another run-in with The Doctor who somehow landed him in the Four Freedoms Plaza of Earth-616 where he was transported to Earth-8410 to face off with Iron Man 2020 before eventually returning to his home reality of Styrakos (which is not officially designated as a universe so the Fandom wiki just labeled it Earth-TRN234). It was certainly quite the tour lol.
please keep going with these! The lost light is where this series is at its peak and its the part I read. I love transformers and especially these comics and I really wish the property was known for the comics rather than the movies its such as disservice.
You have opened a gate to the best Transformers universe of all time From the Ations trilogy to All Hail Megatron to the Wreckers Saga to More Than Meets The Eye and beyond this comic always batted 20s(or occasionally 15s)
A little fun fact: the IDW Transformers series was originally going to be a continuity filled with G1 and Unicron Trilogy characters in it, instead it became mainly G1 with a few characters from other continuities except The Unicron Trilogy (excluding minor background appearances)
Just read more then meets the eye and it’s sequel the lost light. The character development was amazing writing awesome and it make u truly and genuinely care about the characters or read megatron origin I herd from friends that it was a great story. You could also read all hail megatron where the decepticons invade earth and it becomes live action meets g1 with some epic battle scenes
All Hail Megatron is the best story in Phase 1 of the Transformers IDW comics imo but Phase 2 is where I started and instantly got hooked so overall I’d say it gets a LOT better the further it goes on :)
Hey Drake, I just wanted to say that I’m a big fan of Transformers and that the IDW continuity is definitely one of, if not the best Transformers series there is. I would definitely recommend continuing the series as it is definitely amazing, even if it does have a few rough patches here and there. I also think it’s cool how this video will probably introduce a bunch of people to both the IDW series as well as the Transformers franchise as a whole.
Death’s Head is amazing. He is in Marvel and Transformers but he gets even weirder when he’s turned from a villain to an anti-hero by non other than The Doctor from Doctor Who, who also shows up in Star Trek!

I have waited for SO LONGA for you to cover IDW Transformers! Trust me Drake, the continuining series, specially those set in "Phase 2" are all so worth it. Don't give up on this series
That was a pretty good review, Drake. IDW1 is my favourite Transformers continuity (and Transformers is my favourite franchise in fiction) and seeing you cover it makes me happy. Seriously, you should really check those comics out, they are just as great as the fans claim (and perhaps even better). Also, you should check out the original G1 Marvel Comics Transformers run and some Godzilla comics.
To make sure you're not just jumpinging from series to series, IDW also has a series of sort of omnibus volumes called Transformers: The IDW Collections that collects every story in their recommended reading order. There's one set of omnibuses for phase 1 and phase 2 but the new IDW tf universe isnt collected yet
I LOVE the IDW Transformers and TMNT books. Some of my favorite comics of all time. Also Drake love your videos on comics like this. Too bad as you pointed out on Twitter people don't watch these as much as a Marvel/DC video.
From what I've heard, the story REALLY picks up at All Hail Megatron. Of course, More Than Meets The Eye is a masterpiece, and who doesn't love the Wreckers Saga, but I'm currently reading through Drfit: Origins and Empires, a collection of Drift's spotlight comic, his miniseries, and the sequel miniseries: Empire of Stone.
If nothing else, Last Stand of the Wreckers is one to check out. It's a fairly self-contained story, and great on its own, but it also sets up two sequels and plot points for the series More than Meets the Eye / Lost Light.
Yes please keep reading the idw transformers comics because it has a bunch of great stories and original characters that I personally feel in love with
I absolutely love transformers! I'm a Freshman in High School and still collect transformers. Thank you for making this video Drake. I'm going to play world of warships now hehe.
The IDWverse definitely gets better as you go along. The best of the earlier stories are the Spotlights which highlight one specific character in each issue. Largely however the Furman stories all tied into each other and were headed in a specific direction prior to All Hail Megatron which drastically changed the status quo of the universe. After the end of the first Transformers ongoing things start really picking up with More than Meets the Eye and Robots in Disguise as well as their sequel series Lost Light and Optimus Prime. MtMtE/LL are my personal favorite comics of all time and are definitely worth the read, in fact you can pretty much read both series without prior knowledge of the universe or characters. RiD/OP however is steeped in continuity and even brings elements from the Furman era back into the forefront. Another highlight of this universe is the Wreckers Saga; Last Stand of the Wreckers, Sins of the Wreckers and Requiem of the Wreckers. Hope you're able to check them out at some point. Also for anyone curious, the TFWiki is one of the best and is very thorough. They even have lists of where each series is collected and how it fits into the overarching continuity: tfwiki.net/wiki/IDW_Generation_1_continuity
This series is definitely one of the best. Best represent of Optimus Prime and Megatron, it’s also one of the first times they gave us a REASON for the war other than Decepticons = Evil. These first books are kinda just your typical “Robots do some war” stuff, but that’s okay. It definitely gets better as it goes!
Actually, the original Marvel G1 UK 1986 annual text story "State Games" gave a reason as well. I believe it was due to an energy crisis on Cybertron, with certain states being favoured more than others. Megatron was a gladiator at the time.
IDW is still doing transformers comics. They just made the brave choice to let their first continuity have an ending and do something else, which you almost never see in comics.
@ComicDrake you should really do a death's head video His story is beautifully wild And connects transformers, marvel and doctor who And not just for fan service, like all three properties are integral to death's head's story
I’m glad you covered this. Another create thing about the IDW Transformers comics is some genuine great LGBTQ+ representation. There’s a bunch of gay characters, and the Lost Light séries even introduces a pair of transgender characters.
Funny how you posted this video just as I've been getting into Transformers comics. The "Phase one" portion of the series is alright to solid until you get to All Hail Megatron and Last Stand of the Wreckers. Easily my two favorite stories from phase one. Though I'm sure everyone here is starting to tell you to check out James Roberts' More than Meets the Eye/Lost Light run. I just started reading this portion of "Phase Two" and I can safely say it deserves the praise it gets.
You gotta check out Last Stand of the Wreckers. It is SO good. The mainline book really takes off when ot gets soft-rebooted when it splits into Robots in Disguise and More Than Meets the Eye!
Thanks for the great review, you got yourself a new subriber!! This is the second video I've seen on Transformers Infiltration being recommended so I think I will give a shot since it caught my interest. Also, where can I get that guide from that you showed in the beginning of different comics in the line?
I would've recomended Chronological order. Megatron Origins, Autocracy, Monstrosity, Primacy then the Spotlight Series, the -ations books(Infiltration, Escalation and Devastion) All Hail Megatron, The Transformers ongoing, MTMTE and RID concurrently. That's how I read the series and frankly It's the most enjoyable way to read it till you get to Dark Cybertron.
Gotta get the word out somehow. I'm not much on naval combat games but the Transformers collab does have me intrigued though I read the bundle to get everything in the collab will set you back $100 though they do offer you options to buy either the commander, the camo for their ships, or a themed bundle for that character.
Also, the New Avengers/Transformers crossover. It's set between Infiltration and Escalation. But the series really doesn't matter in the long run because it's never mentioned again. The only thing it does is introduced Ramjet (who would show up for his own Spotlight issue) into the IDW continuity.
One more thing, Transformers Evolutions: Hearts of Steel, and Transformers: Infestation 2 #1-2. They may not seem like they're important, but trust me. When you get to the book Revolutionaries, First Strike and the latter half of Optimus Prime, it will all make sense.
I think a year or two later after this 2005 series the books get darker. Which gets into the More than meets the eye series which is in my opinion the best. Mostly because it knows what it is, unlike the spin off of MTMTE, Robots in disguise with the remaining Autobots, including an aging bumblebee trying to govern cybertron. It got pretty confusing really fast and it didn’t help that before every start of those comics was a small segment of Optimus (Orion Pax now) going on his own mission with an orc and a fucked up Wheelie who has some serious PTSD but we don’t really know why.
If your looking for something to read than I recommend transformers more than meets the eye and the lost light its my favourite thing I've ever read and I totally recommend them you can jump straight into them without reading anything prior to them
Yeah you do need to keep going beyond the first published stories to get to the stuff that everyone's raving about. Or you could just skip to Last Stand of the Wreckers, and the "Phase two" stuff. Cuz yeah with the phase two stuff that's were a lot of world/culture building comes into play, and that's kind of the stuff that everyone likes.
Actually the comics got good after the new staff took over from the older writers. They were willing to break a lot of conventions and established a bunch of story beats that are now standard, like 2 people you mentioned originally being friends and fighting on the same side, or that re dscepticons aren't fighting for what you think they are.
I do reccomend continuing the series im more familiar with the 'phase 2' books from 2012 onward (the IDW timeline is in 2 phases,. phase 1 is war, phase 2 is post war), and believe me, the phase 2 books, particularly the ones penned by james roberts are a very enjoyable, if geeky read
It does get better. Especially with Megatron. If you can do more videos on IDW Transformers then that would be awesome. But if not then still read the rest of the books. It is worth the read. You will not be disappointed. Side note, IDW Sonic the Hedgehog is pretty good as well. I am enjoying how this version of Sonic is written.
I highly recommend starting with the autocracy trilogy book, the first few books on earth are clunky at best. The all hail megatron happens and it kicks off properly. Also recommend the wrecker books and eventually the more than meets the eye series, which in my opinion is the highlight of the franchise.
The best part of this universe is More Than Meets The Eye/Lost Light. You definitely have to read those.
Also all hail Megatron and the Wreckers trilogy
Nyes
Original G1 US/UK run was pretty damn good, considering it was only meant to be a limited series in '84
Ehhhhh... while I do like More Than Meets the Eye, it gets worse after Dark Cybertron, and Lost Light wasn't all that good in my personal opinion.
Facts!!!
YOU GOTTA GET TO MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE OR LAST STAND OF THE WRECKERS.

Ya’ll need to do more Transformers videos.
MORE IDW TRANSFORMERS!!!
I highly recommend starting with the autocracy trilogy book, the first few books on earth are clunky at best.
The all hail megatron happens and it kicks off properly.
Also recommend the wrecker books and eventually the more than meets the eye series, which in my opinion is the highlight of the franchise.
Can we pleas get more transformers content.
Would love to see you cover IDW's TMNT and Ghostbusters comics
It's been a while, but please keep going
Please do more!!! I want to know more
