Thank you for the refresher! I have done this with my fiancé before but he passed away and knew it needed to be done again so you’ve helped me tremendously lol just had some trouble actually getting that thing out
Thank you for the video. I would not have attempted such a job without it. Took me about 2 hours to remove, 1 hour to clean engine compartment, and about an hour to reinstall everything. I was shocked how much oil/junk was in the alternator when the engine compartment looked relatively clean. Double and triple check that the belt is seated properly before staring the vehicle.
Just used this great video to change an alternator on an 06 Hyundai Azera. By doing it myself using this great video I saved $350. Nice job Paul and thanks
thank you so much guy , just got finished installing alternator on my o6 sonata, and because of your video , got it done in under 3 hours ,and for $125.00 ,thanks so much! take care.
Thank you sir! My 2007 Sonata just had the battery light turn on and then the car died after an hour of driving. Jumped the car but the battery light still on and then I replaced the battery to a brand new one just to get home! I will be ordering an Alternator and doing this myself! I'm no mechanic but I've fixed minor problems with my car or other cars. This will be very useful! Thank you!
Good video ... watched it twice, had a bowl of cereal ... and then headed to the garage. 5 hours for me ... but I'm old and I took the old one out before heading to the auto shop. It was about 98 degrees today too ... slowed me down. As others mentioned, the cardboard covering the radiator is a great idea. At first I thought I'd just be careful ... but after two tugs, I cut me a piece of cardboard. My old one tested "okay" at auto zone but I was getting this weird flashing seatbelt and battery light every now and then while driving. I have an oil leak above the alternator which was likely causing some kind of problem with the alternator ... I hope. 165K miles on this '08 Sonata ... I'm going for 200K.
I have the same problem when I drive my car the battery light goes on and off, and my gear sometimes doesn't shift, and the engine light goes on and off too!!! I replaced the Neutral safety switch but it didn't fix the problem. Please let me know if your problem was fixed by changing the alternator.
Dude! This was VERY helpful!! It took me longer because I left my socket extensions at another location. Ugh! Ended up to be 6 hr. Job. I especially liked the idea of covering the radiator fins with cardboard to protect it from damage. Good call! My harmonic dampener pulley ended up going bad days later. So I would recommend replacing that and the belt while you have it apart and available. Now I have to take it all apart again! :-( FYI...my Sonata has 132,000 mi. On it,.
Oh yeah, wanted to mention I saw a guy talking about this in a Hyundai forum and he said it's way easier changing these thing from underneath - dropping it out the bottom - if you can get it on a lift of decent size ramps even.
December 2023 a 2006 alternator cost me $400 at Napa in California Kern County. I bought a rebuilt one for $234 I'm going to get $55 back when I give them my old one
I have a 07 Sonata myself and have owned the car since new. I ended up having Hyundai replace the alternator on mine the first time because the oil took it out. They hacked into it pretty good and I am missing half the plastic up in and around the fan now. Next time I will change it out myself. I owned a used Sonata before that with the v6 in it as well and was lucky that I didn't have issues with it, but I didn't have it for very long. This will be the last Hyundai I will own.
I liked my sonata and I own a Tucson now, I don't blame Hyundai for the issue because my Honda minivan and my Pontiac minivan before that both had head oil leaks as well. If anything I think it's whatever company makes these head gaskets.
My Sonata has been nothing but a pain for me. The power steering pump is going as well (will be fixing that today) its the same thing as with the Alt. there is no room to get at it and you have to remove the pulley first in order to get it out, if the pulley doesn't want to come off you have to cut it into pieces so you can remove the old pump, then put the new pump in and then put the pulley on in place. I guess I cannot complain to much about that since I have a Ford with the 6.7 engine and you cant even see the parts down below on it. Just so much crap packed in on these vehicles that you can't even get to it to work on them.
Thanks Paul, that was most edifying. I just went through having the gasket replaced on my 2007 Sonata because of this, what seems to be the standard, oil leaking on to the alternator for every friggin Hyundai made. I can't believe they designed the engine like this with this common a flaw and that bad a design. Really? An alternator that oil can leak onto and is the biggest PITA to swap out. I'm pretty pissed because the battery finally died today as I'm assuming the alternator gave up the ghost somewhere in the last day or two. And when they were doing the work I asked them if we should just replace the serp belt and alternator while they had everything apart because what's an extra $200 at that point...precisely to avoid the problem I just ran into - and they said, 'Nah they're fine.' So we'll see what happens Monday if they're going to cover the labor on this or we may have to end up in small claims court because damned if I'm paying for it after they said no. I fully admit this car has never given me any problems at all over the last 10 years but now at the 10 year mark it almost seems like its falling apart at the seams where all kinds of things seem to be going wrong, and the front end is squeaky as hell in the winter, driver power seat is half busted, etc. I'm really perplexed because everyone and there dog always goes on about how great and reliable Hyundais are. At this point, when I'm done with this car in the next year or two I seriously doubt I'll be looking at a Hyundai again. Question: You mentioned something about a recall for this very problem with oil leaking onto the alternator. I couldn't find anything about that relating to Sonatas - at least the 2007 model I have - but I've seen they've done several recalls for other Hyundai models for this exact same problem. Was the recall for the Sonata? Maybe it's just a US thing as I'm in Canada? Anyway, rant done. Thanks!
This is the V6 engine. I was looking at my 2.4L engine and it doesn't get much easier - the power steering pump is stacked on top of the the serp run above the alternator! I'm going to replace the serp belt myself, and figure I might as well remove the wheel well cover to help route the belt that way - and give my practice for the inevitable alternator replacement!
This is a good video, but there are few things I noticed. I have owned a mobile auto repair business for almost 11 years and I have bailed out so many people after they have viewed some of these videos. A person called me today that is stuck doing an alternator on a 2006 Hyundai. I will only charge him $170 because I am in a good mood, but it's not a bad job if things go well. I am in the Northeast and some things just don't come apart so easily and the job turns ugly. I think an hour to hour & 1/2 is a bit generous from start to finish, but definitely less than 3 when doing it the correct way. Please always put the positive on first and the negative on last. There is a reason for this. The car is negative ground. If you put the negative on first & while putting on the positive touch anything metal, it will arc or short to ground(negative). When you put the positive on first, this will not happen while putting on the negative because as I mentioned, the chassis is negative ground. It's the opposite for battery disconnecting or removing. Negative First, then positive to disconnect the battery.
Great point! I once yelled at the Firestone techs for wanting to charge my wife 400 bucks to change spark plugs in her Santa Fe 6cyl. Well, after looking at what needed to be done to get to the 3 that are not in plain site I kind of felt bad! It was a lot more work than I assumed and I didn't want to take the risk of messing something else up.
I've removed alot of alternators and I am doing a Hyundai right now and I did not have to take off the wheel but I guess my hands are smaller. I changed the belt and removed the alternator but you do have to remove the fan assembly though. I removed and installed the belt with a pry bar on the tensioner and didn't loosen the side bolt you just have to know what your doing I guess.
My question is for the mechanic and the car owner. When you found out there was oil dripping on top of the alternator. Mine is doing the same thing where was the oil dripping from and what did you have to do to fix that problem
How to get the cable that goes from the alternator to the battery removed? There are several clips holding it to the engine and I can't figure out how to get them to open/unsnap. About ready to just cut them
idk if its too late but pinch one side out the clip make sure its put then holind the side thats out push the other side of the clip out if that makes any sense lol but fr for any futer clip removal i took my car to the shop and they fucking broke hella clips and electrical connectors because of that so be careful with the harness that stuff is not cheap
The installation of the new alternator seems so difficult on 2007 Sonata, 2.4L. which bolt should be mounted 1st, top or bottom? Mine needs to be hammered into place after mounting lower slide and bolt 1st. due to tolerances of alternator mounts. Is there an easy way? Thanks,Jim
took me 12 hours with 2 people, car was in a accident before I brought it I guess so all the hoses and the radiator was slammed forward was a massive pain in the ass even the entire engine belt fell off it was a complete joke but it was completed I guess ended up breaking the oil dip stick as well to add insult to injury.. definitely a shitty job
Never mind; I realized it was incorrectly re-mounted. I should not have removed it then gone on vacation for 3 weeks and then try to remember how to do the install.
you mite see good voltage like 14.2 volts but still have the battery light on n the dash but it could have a intermenting problem or the altenator not putting out the amps that need to run every thing car mite not have the amps to run the lights at nights
oil leak caused alternator to fail i bet, same on our hyundai had recall for valve cover leak right above alternator. phil long hyundai sucked in fixing leak finally fixed myself with high tack sealant.
I can't say I have one. One thing I found is getting an oil change more often helps. I'm not sure that part of it isn't leaking from the filter. It's a strange filter setup.
Jimmy James - the oil and gunk is caused by an issue with the head gaskets on that model. Hyundai will fix it for you if you don't mind parting with $2600. So instead there is oil and gunk on the bottom of my engine at least.
Hi I have the same car (2008) with the same type of leak (oil covering the alternator) how did you fix the leak in your vehicle and how did you determine where t was coming from?
2009 the fan is in your way and wont come out, its so tight. I had to undo the front and passenger motor mounts, jack the engine back to get it out. the entire job was a major bitch. plan on all day. I'm experienced and thought a couple hours, NOT.
This video was moderately helpful until you completely jump cut over the hardest part... "and the serpentine belt is back in." Like, what? How? That's the hardest part. When you didn't show it, this immediately became a useless piece of trash
On a 2002 it isn't in the same location right? I believe I read those do blow more often. You can use a plyers, but you have to be careful not to squeeze too tight they are a fragile plastic
Sorry I'm not familiar enough with that model. I'm not a mechanic, I used to be an engineer for Ford Motor, so I know how to work on this stuff, but this 2006 sonata is my first hyundia
Thank you for the refresher! I have done this with my fiancé before but he passed away and knew it needed to be done again so you’ve helped me tremendously lol just had some trouble actually getting that thing out
Sorry for your loss. In spirit I'm sure he was enlightened to see you attempt or do the job.
Thank you for the video. I would not have attempted such a job without it. Took me about 2 hours to remove, 1 hour to clean engine compartment, and about an hour to reinstall everything. Thank you for the video this has helped out twice so far!
Very helpful. Changed an alternator on my Azera. Not an easiest job but the video helped me a lot. Thanks man!
thanks, this was very helpful! uninstalled and reinstalled in about 4 hours.
Thank you for your help. I'm not sure that that mistake has made any difference in this video being helpful to anyone, but I've corrected the issue.
My 06 needs a alternator, battery light stays on. Bought the alternator and a belt. Do I need a pry bar to tighten the belt?

Helpful video, thanks. Crazy complex just to gain access to an alternator.
Haha have done the spark plugs yet HAHAHAHAHA .

Good point Marc, I am always yelling at these PROFESSIONAL BOZOS for doing crappy DYI videos, If it was this easy anybody could do it

have you worked on a 2011 sonata? and, is there a way to get around removing the bottom bolt that runs into the reinforced place around the wheel well
Never mind; I realized it was incorrectly re-mounted. I should not have removed it then gone on vacation for 3 weeks and then try to remember how to do the install.
you mite see good voltage like 14.2 volts but still have the battery light on n the dash but it could have a intermenting problem or the altenator not putting out the amps that need to run every thing car mite not have the amps to run the lights at nights
joseph kopeczy ...what I have to do if after I remplace the new alternator on 2006 Hyundai sonata v6..but the alternator light still on in the dash?
Thank you for sharing this video!
Thanks for the tips.
Unless the frames in the way, coming through the bottom has to be easier
got the job done good stuff thanks
12.6v is nominal on a 12v battery. So anything below 12.6 is not charging. And anything below 13 is not gonna maintain the battery and loads
would I be able to take it out through the bottom?
anybody got torque specs for the two alternator bolts ?
oil leak caused alternator to fail i bet, same on our hyundai had recall for valve cover leak right above alternator. phil long hyundai sucked in fixing leak finally fixed myself with high tack sealant.
What did you use ?
Does anyone know where the TCU is located on an 06 Hyundai Sonata 3.3L?
Nesecito un motor el mio paso afua al aceite hyundai sonata 3.3 6 cilindros año 2006
What additive do you recommend to help stop/slow the oil leak on the alternator?
Im gonna say I would be worried about all the oil and gunk on the engine .......that aint right
I can't say I have one. One thing I found is getting an oil change more often helps. I'm not sure that part of it isn't leaking from the filter. It's a strange filter setup.

A 3/4 inch SAE wrench or socket will be 19mm in metric do the math
Hi I have the same car (2008) with the same type of leak (oil covering the alternator) how did you fix the leak in your vehicle and how did you determine where t was coming from?
It's the head gasket and I've never done it, mine still leaks. It's a big job to replace, need to know all the torque specs for the head, etc.
My 2007 has same issue with oil leaking on the alt. Replaced alt this time last year now its going out again..smdh
Dude below is wrong it’s the VALVE cover gasket and it’s a easy job
It's not the head leaking it's the valve cover gasket
2009 the fan is in your way and wont come out, its so tight. I had to undo the front and passenger motor mounts, jack the engine back to get it out. the entire job was a major bitch. plan on all day. I'm experienced and thought a couple hours, NOT.
Just so you know this is not the 2.4l.the 2.4l is a 4 cylinder. Please lane the correct info for your car
The dc should be 14
This video was moderately helpful until you completely jump cut over the hardest part... "and the serpentine belt is back in." Like, what? How? That's the hardest part. When you didn't show it, this immediately became a useless piece of trash
This is the type of video that makes me pay $300 😂😂😂😂 what a mess.. u sure u don't want to take off front bumper and steering wheel smh.
no, there isn't enough room
hey Paul I'm having a problem with a alternator fuse for a 2002 hyundai sonata it's blown had no way of taking it out any suggestions
On a 2002 it isn't in the same location right? I believe I read those do blow more often. You can use a plyers, but you have to be careful not to squeeze too tight they are a fragile plastic
No they had it on top of the battery and it's very old and burnt on they have star screws..I was wondering if I had to break it and redo the casing
Sorry I'm not familiar enough with that model. I'm not a mechanic, I used to be an engineer for Ford Motor, so I know how to work on this stuff, but this 2006 sonata is my first hyundia
ok thanks
