Thanks a lot for watching Craig. That's the thing I was most disappointed about and I couldn't find anyone who had even tested that feature out. Not many people shoot their camera reviews in complete pitch darkness. All the low light and high iso videos I've seen testing the A7s3 are in the middle of a city at night.

Great vid Richard - currently looking between the Z6ii and the Sony and that flip screen is a considerable factor when operating alone, with my Z6 I use the wifi remote with a mobile phone just to check that the focus is working correctly & composition is good etc. As the Z6ii has majorly improved autofocus (it no longer changes focal plane when loosing lock) and I’m more into the photo’s than video for me that looks a better option. Great to see the comparison as it has helped in making my choice :-)

Unashamed Nikon fan boy here and I have no doubt in my mind that that Sony is probably the best 4k video camera in its class. But I really appreciate your approach to breaking down It's strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, I simply couldn't justify that much of a price tag (here in the U.S. it's also the cost of 2 Z 6's) for a dedicated video camera as 12 megapixels aren't enough for my needs in terms of stills. Thanks so much for your great content. Long time subscriber first time commenter. Cheers

Hey Randy, I really do appreciate your comments. I absolutely agree about justifying the price/performance thing. I shoot videos every week and it's a big part of what I do. I certainly wouldn't be able to justify that expense if I wasn't doing that on a regular basis. I still think the Nikon Z system is completely underrated .. it's a great camera. @ElGrecoDaGeek 4 года назад +1

A camera is gear. Cheeky comment or not, there is no dark side - that's just brand tribalism ;)
Case in point, I shot Canon for 20 years starting with film. I loved my Elan 7e, and after that my 20D, 7D, and 5diii.
Switching to Nikon opened my eyes to the fact that the camera is a tool. I still have the 5diii, but I prefer the look straight out of camera that Nikon has as well as the ergonomics. I wish they'd kept some of the ergo from the D750 though in the new Z line. While digital photography means that you invest in the "film" at the time of purchase and therefore brand is a component, I've been more impressed with Nikon/Sony since the D750 era than with Canon.

That video was vary helpful!! I do landscape and nightscape photography. I'm shopping for a new camera now and I'm considering between the Nikon Z711 , Sony A7R111 and the Sony A7V which is a 61 MP camera. I have heard that a high MP sensor at high ISO may show more nosie. Could you share your thoughts on this. I'm going out to Utah and California USA in the spring. If you ever come to the US to shoot and want a detailed (to the exact spot) where a lot of good Milky Way pictures are, let me know. Thank you for your advice on the cameras.

Thanks a lot for watching John. It is true that the higher megapixel cameras will show some more noise but I've found this pretty easy to control with noise reduction. The Nikon Z7ii is a wonderful camera and you won't be disappointed with it. The Sony cameras are also very good but I prefer the ergonomics of the Nikons.

Excellent review, however, I think you are a couple of weeks too early. You should now be reviewing bathe Sony A7s3 against the Nikon Z6ii. Listening to your comments comparing the autofocus speed etc. I think, from other reviews I have seen by people who have actually had their hands on the new Nikon, you will find this has been more than addressed. No, Nikon hasn't redesigned the screen to swivel round to front-face, but that doesn't bother me as I don't make these sort of videos, but in every other respect I think the new Z6ii and Z7ii will more than match the Sony performances. Love my Z6 and am looking forward to receiving a Z7ii in December. I certainly couldn't afford to run two brands nor switch from one to the other. Very happy to lie in the "Nikon bed".

Morning Richard, as you said the main reason you got the Sony was the articulating screen for video. Stick to that as your reason for buying, I looked into Sony when I bought my Fujifilm and price was a factor the Sony at the time being far more expensive and for the glass too. Anyways! The bottom of the line is :
no matter what you’re shooting with ... if it’s the one you like. Who cares if one uses Nikon, Canon, Sony or whatever, as long as it’s what someone is confortable with it.
The camera might make a difference as for full frame or cropped, but the thing is to be able to do something with it, no?!

Got some very good astro pictures of Orion nebula and constellation on the new Nikon Z6ii. There are no videos yet on the internet for astrophotography for the Z6ii. Milky Way season is over so its just the Orion and Pleaides for just the Z6ii and Star Adventurer. I tested the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8, the Nikon Z 20mm F1.8 and Rokinon 14mm F2.4 for the Nikon Z 6ii. The Sigma is too heavy to carry around and had lots of astigmatism at 14mm. Rokinon has lots of coma but a less heavy. The Nikon Z 20mm had best performance when stopped down from F1.8 to F2.8 and was lighter. I will return the other 2 lenses. I used the back button to magnify the stars to focus on the Z6ii with the red light indicator when the stars are in focus. Its still not exact on the Z6, but very close. Focusing always seems to the be issue on the Nikon Z lenses. I am thinking of testing the Nikon Z14-24mm lens for astro. No one on the internet has done it yet.

Well RIchard, I have been waiting for this video for a while and it didn't disapoint me. I must admit, the videos on the sony looked terrific. I am also sure that in most other respects, it holds up well too. For me personally I will stay with the z6, mainly because I have invested in some good glass and don't want to duplicate equipment ( I am only doing this as ahobby ). I can understand your need for the sony, after all, you do make videos professionally. I also believe, there is no such thing as the perfect camera, every one has good and bad points and each person must decide what is important. Personally the d850 was nearly the perfect camera but I never bought for one reason, the wifi was crap. For me the Z6 was a big leap of faith but I haven't been disapointed, the glass is awesome, low light capabilities great. I too would like the flippy screen but more so backlit buttons, this would be super. One day, when the z25 comes out, we may get all the features that satisfies everybody, and all that for maybe 1500$ !
As for your comparison photos, on RUclips they looked identical, it would be interesting to see the originals at 100% to compare detail and noise, maybe you could post a couple of the original single shot pics ?

As well as that the Z6 doesn't show any settings on the external screen . .it's a clean signal out via the HDMI so i'm often unsure if it's recording or if the audio is good etc. When out in the field, especially at night it's just too much of a bother to worry about all the extra bits. Hey there, I was toyin with the idea of trading my 14-30 f4 for the new 14-24 f2.8 z lens....but thinking I may stick with the f4 and get the 20 1.8 instead.

Hey Jake, all of the Nikon Z mount lenses are awesome. The new 14-24 f2.8 will be amazing but it's horribly expensive. I know a lot of people doing incredible work with the 14-30 f4. I absolutely love the 20mm f1.8S lens.

    • @KungPowEnterFist
      @KungPowEnterFist 4 года назад

You are better off with the Z 14-30 f4 and Z 20 f1.8 combo vs just the Z 14-24 f2.8. The Z 14-30 is a better overall (all considered) zoom lens vs the Z 14-24 f2.8, and the Z 20 f1.8 is the very best FF wide or ultra wide prime or zoom of any brand on the market. That combo offers you the flex and the destroyer. The Z 14-24 f2.8 offers you a series of uncomfortable compromises in the middle that is actually more expensive than the other two combined. The truth is that the use case of each of these (an ultra wide to wide zoom and a fast ultra wide or wide prime) are exclusive. The Z 14-30 f4 and Z 14-24 f2.8 do not replace the Z 20 f1.8, and vice versa. If you got the Z 14-24 f2.8, you would still want to get the Z 20 f1.8.

In order to evaulate ISO sensor performance you need a close up comparison of the RAW images using the same lens for both. This video is definitely useful but it is impossible to judge the actual sensor performance between the two as a viewer.

Thanks a lot for watching Jerry. I do use a star tracker sometimes but not in this video. I just keep the shutter speed short enough to not see any trails. It's all dependent on lens focal length. I also do a lot of stacking which can assist as well.

Hey Jonathan, I'm not noticing anything I'd describe as "Star Eater" at all in the images. But you may have to compare it to another Sony camera. I'm sure Alyn Wallace will be able to check that out in his testing.

I am using a Sony A7Riii and have had great results. I did find that I had to play with ISO more to get good shots. I started with a Sony A6000 and got hooked.

Thanks a lot for watching Jay. I have a suspicion that the iso values vary between camera brands. I've seen that mentioned before somewhere. Also I've had first hand experience where people using the A7r3 had a much brighter image at the same iso from others using Canon and Nikon full frame cameras.

Excellent comparisons Richard, thanks for showing the two. As a dark, dark side user of Canon :), I do like the Canon R with its larger articulated screen and before buying it did compare it with the Sony A7riv, though in daylight, found the colour straight out of the camera, slightly better than the Sony. In saying that all three brands are amazing cameras! thanks again.

Thanks very much Alan. Yes there's no doubt the Canon colour science is excellent, and as I mentioned that larger fully articulating screen is a sure winner. I don't think we can go wrong with any of the new mirrorless cameras . .we are very spoilt for choice.

I think the zoom mag on the Sony A7s3 is limited to 4x because that puts the image 1:1 with the LCD. The other A7s magnify more because they have more pixels.

I find it a lot more difficult without the extra zoom. I only use very fast aperture lenses such as the Sony 24mm f1.4 and with that it is really quite bright and easy to see the focus change. Other lenses not so easy.
