- February 16, 2008 - Gerald Green employed Minnesota Timberwolves teammate Rashad McCants to place a cupcake with one single candle upon the neck of the rim during the 2008 NBA Slam Dunk Contest. Green earned a 46 after blowing the candle out mid-dunk.

This dunk is so underappreciated. If you tell your kids I saw a man put a cupcake on the rim, run and catch a pass, while dunking the ball blow out the candle. It sounds like a a story. Now we have RUclips.

I remember watching this live at a bar, and at full speed you couldn't really see what happened. It looked like an ordinary dunk. Then they did the slow motion from behind the rim and when he blew out the candle in slow mo, the whole bar went "OOOOOHHHHH!!!!" and started clapping!

Definitely doesn’t get talked about enough because this could have been a tragedy if the candle didn’t get blown out fell on the ground 😂 but the fact it went perfectly on the first attempt this should have been a 50
As impressive as the athletic feat is, you also have to admire the creativity. It takes a special kind of brain to think "let's put a lit candle on the rim and blow it out."
2021. This is still a very underrated dunk. If someone on the playground told me they were going to do this I'd sound like Charles. I wouldn't believe it til I saw. And even then "show me the cake..."

Anyone can do the dunk itself but blowing out a candle at the top of the rim while dunking the ball amd the cupcake staying on the time after is near impossible amd the fact he did it in one take is crazy....he blew the candle out before he dunked the ball so we know the momentum of him dunking had no effect on it either....this is easily top 10 dunks on the dunk contest of all time
this is what the dunk contest needs. more creativity. It's been around for so long that even the toughest dunks are boring.

His head was at the rim level which is very rare and only a few players could jump as high as him,, and it's really awesome to watch when he blew the candle and dunk the ball.

Still the best dunk in a dunk contest ever. I can’t even blow the candles out when they are right in front of me. Usually takes me a couple attempts. He did it while jumping, then was able to dunk perfectly enough to not knock it off.
I love how the crowd loses it when they see the replay.

Since the early to mid 90’s the contest which brought huge fame to MJ n Nique , Dr J before that, had been dying a slow death.
It was a great marketing tool but by mid 90’s let alone post 2000 it was no longer a must see thing. That said , what Vince Carter did looking back the last 25 years is still the greatest display of straight up dunking a basketball you’ll ever see.
