When I was a kid in 1967, my parents bought me a brand new Raleigh 3-speed in the same green color as this Triumph. It was a great bike and I wish I still had it. Your restoration of this bike brought back some happy memories. You gave new life to a classic well deserving of another chapter and the chance to make some new memories for someone who will appreciate its old-school hand craftsmanship. Great work. I'd love to see you bring some more classics back to life.
Glad you enjoyed this one for the personal reasons! We love hearing all the vintage stories from everyone, we genuinely make these videos as frequently as we can buy finding the right bike at an affordable price is uncommon!🧡⚙️
nice job, glad to know you took photo's of the hub as you went along to be able to keep track I was thinking I could never do that hub, but with photo's maybe, lol! Drew.
It’s an invaluable tool, even on jobs we’ve done before it gives the confidence we need to know we got it right. Thanks for all the support the past week🧡⚙️
Astonished that this is a 1973 model. In 1973 at school we were mostly running around on Sun, Viking and Falcon 5 and 10 speed racers and this sort of bike, especially with this sort of brakes was 50s and 60s stuff to us. Three speed bikes had standard cable brakes by then as far as we knew , it was the era of the RSW 16 and Twenty, the Chopper, the Chipper and the Shopper . The only bikes like this I remember seeing all had the bottom half of the rear bumper painted white, a hangover from the blackout of WWII. Great video, thanks
Amazing how the condition of the planet wheels, planet hubs and starclutch are after more than 60 years. That's a other story than the ABC gearhub of these days.😄 Great piece of satisfying work by the way.
@@Bikespeeds yes that's what you've got with the throwing away society. Quality isn't that important anymore. The bikes were that good that day, that it's economical not responsible anymore. But it's a pleasure to see those bikes, especially when you disassemble them. And indeed I love to watch your video. Also just normal without hand gloves. Lovely old fashioned in that way. Only than you've got feeling with the bike.
What a job! Gentlemen, you took a rusty bike and turned it into a near ready museum piece. Thank you so much for this marvelous transformation. And a special mention for showing us the complete restoration of a three-speed Sturmey Archer transmission. You are the kings of bicycle repair.
Loves these videos, I have a 1950s Raleigh ladies bicycle which I found in the 1980s at a tip and restored it with my grandfather, it was then used by gran and then my mum and has been handed back to me. I have stripped it down to the frame now, but realised I didn’t take any photos before. 😂 so these videos are great for me to remind where everything goes.
Great video, just started my Raleigh bike today, pretty much the same as that triumph but the brakes are different. Those cotter pins and pedals are fun to get off 😂
We did do a Raleigh that was almost identical to this one in design some months back. If you haven’t watched that video it may be the same bike! Thanks for watching this one though, glad you enjoyed it🧡
Great resto. Quick heads up at 19:00 (as you mentioned pedals being one of the few things you use torque for); for a torque reading to be correct when using a crow's foot, the crow's foot has to be 90deg to the head of the wrench, or you'll get an inaccurate reading. Great resto! Loved the hub cleaning. :)
Omg I literally got done with a hub like this one yesterday, but it was the drum brake version. It's from 1954. I did have source 4 new pawl springs (HSA120) and the threads on the gear chain was worn so I'm waiting for a new one in the mail. I can't wait to see the look on the customer's face... Anyway great job as always.
Thanks Gary! Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for dropping us a comment of support, after a big build like this it means a lot to see everyone’s reaction🧡⚙️
Cheers from Los Angeles. Love this restoration. Have to say I learned a lot from watching you work, as my knowledge of bike mechanics stretches only to the 1990s when road bikes and mountain bikes became standard across brands. Love the ethos of the build: make it ride ready. Hope she sees the road, it would be a shame to let her collect dust.
Thank you Mario! Glad you could get something from the videos. These old bikes are really where the passion lies for us so we love doing them as much as you guys seem to enjoy watching them!🧡⚙️
Thoroughly enjoyed this video, as it's for a well used but well loved bike which is more along the lines of what I work on. I'll be tagging this one for future reference as you provided an excellent view of the disassembly, cleaning and reassembly of the Sturmey Archer rear hub. I have a bike that was soooo close to being done, when I lost one of the small springs 😞, so I'm having to be patient until such time as another comes in. Thanks, Chris Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
Wow what a restoration. Really great example of how you don't have to replace everything and just take the time to get everything clean and lubed. We'll done 🎉
Great job as always totally enjoyed this video.. This bike is very similar to the 1962 Raleigh you did months back. The Triumph and Raleigh were such well made bikes. As with this one all cleaned lubed and ready for many more enjoyable miles. Thanks
Yes it was very similar. And in a crazy turn of events we saw both of these bike models for sale again local to us! So we actually could’ve done 2 of each but chose we’d done enough racing green vintage bikes for a short while! Thanks for always dropping us a positive message 🧡⚙️
Absolutely stellar! I had to work on the same hub, well, without oiling port and with coaster break. This is about what I do with some bines: fix up old stuff to work well and look shitty (in my case). Best way to beat the thieves I've found so far. Loved the video, though I hoped to see a little test ride as the rational you've given for showing none doesn't apply to this project.
WOW, not only does the years of this bike shine through, but as always, so does the abundance of enthusiasm from deep within your heart. An absolutely incredible transformation... thanks millions for shareing
Love the fact that this has been given more life, rather than end up on the scrap heap. Proper bike. Lovely job. Very interesting also, to see that hub serviced.
As a teenager, I owned a Robinhood. I know the Sturmey Archer hub well. Ridden hard in all weathers, they weren't well sealed and needed to be dismantled, cleaned up, and new bearings installed periodically. They had a unique pawl sound when tooling along in 3rd gear. There was also a 3 speed derailleur version with drop bars produced.
Thanks for finding a more fitting saddle & preserving the dynamo lighting. People can be quick to remove these things because they look messy/don't work, rather than think they could be as old as the bike & may have always been fitted. And they are useful in winter. Keep up the good work. True professionals!
Your best video yet, absolute joy to watch! Realistic restorations for most people to try - too many other channels strip and respray old bikes like these which I don't watch now as I don't have the time to try that and like you I love the natural patina. So many excellent tips, trick and techniques watching your channel - thank you 😀

Your enjoyment and pride in your work were obvious in this video. It really shows what a proper bike shop can do. Lots of places follow the fast fit approach now but I was glad to see some proper repairs and restoration taking place. The video inspired me to get an old bike for restoration, until you took the sturney archer apart! I will leave that to the professionals!
As a student and a part-time bike mechanic in a bike shop, I love your videos so much. I've been watching you for over half a year now approximately and I've learned a lot and you have given me so many ideas on tools and equipment to use when restoring or just doing a proper deep service. I've shown your videos and your channel to a large group of people that are in my Cycling Club and I just want to say thank you for the weekly videos. Props to you and to your awesome son Simon because this is practically my weekly 15 to 20 minutes of heaven and mental getaway. Cheers from Slovenia

I'm supporting you channel for a about a year now, it really helped me to fix and service other bikes properly generally because of your videos, Big support from Philippines💖
I also wet sand and clear coat the paint. These are great bikes 50 yrs down the road you still rebuild. Good luck with carbon electric non serviceable bearings. I have a Raleigh with three speed and derailleur are they rare great job Simon😎
What a great Resto-Job! Gratulation! Bring back new life to old bikes is for me thousend times more satisfying then all the new, modern carbon and hightech stuff. Off cause the modern bikes are also great as sporttools and impressive, but they never come close to the charme and beauty of the old, heavy, chromloaded town or touring bikes who were built to last for Generations, carry heavy loads, bags or kids wirh you, summer and winter, year in year out. I own some of this old gems and enjoy therefor this videos the most - thank you 🎉
We agree. The robustness of the old bikes is astonishing to us. Like a 60 year old hub in perfect condition. The old stuff is our real passion. Thanks for the comment!🧡⚙️
Thanks so much for bringing this to us. A master mechanic at his work no doubt. A brilliant balance of retaining originality and renewal, and of course the spin test to end all spin tests. Superb.
Great video - love the ethos behind restoring this. Stumbled down this rabbit hole after picking up a Peugeot Laser 15 recently and exploring how best to get it up and running again - I’d rather clean and fix rather than outright replace original parts.
I've got an old 3 speed hub bike which I've stripped the hub and rebuilt. Was a bit concerned I'd get wrong but with plenty of photos all came good so was good to see I'd got it right. Thanks for a great video.
I find your videos are so good for my anxiety when I watch them I completely relax almost hypnotic, I think its the combination of the speed and the voice overlay wonderful!
I have a 1974 Union single speed with a coaster brake. I dont think the brake hub has ever been opened, and it's working great. The paint has faded a lot, but with a new crankset and serviced bearings, plus an old brooks saddle, it rides great. I fixed both lights to run on the dynamo, the lights are "earthed" through the frame! Lovely old tech.
You guys are mindblowing! Love to repair and bring back life to old bikes myself and you are so often an inspiration to me! Lovely! Greetings from Hamburg, Germany
That’s great to hear! Enjoy your tinker time and maybe even a few of the products from our website along the way lol. Good luck with the restoration!🧡⚙️
An acquaintance of mine had a similar bicycle to this - a Pashly and was considering having the frame repainting. I steered him towards your restoration of a Raleigh you completed some time ago. Thankfully he took your advice and the bicycle looks good after a deep clean and polish of the frame
my cousin gave me a triumph bike same as this one in 1967 rde it for a couple of years then bought a claud butler for ten schillings put new front wheel on had that for a few years now i am restoreing a 1960s holdsworth this vlog gives me a bt of enthusiasm.
Always a joy to watch your new video. Bought some stuff from the shop can't wait to have my big softy. I also use your videos in an unconventionnal way, sometimes we watch some cartoons with my daughter in bed when it's nap time. When she's still not asleep after one or two cartoon I switch to one of yours and then in 5 minutes tops she's sound asleep, works incredibly well so thanks for that.
Hopefully you enjoy your order! It’s finally giving us a small something back from the RUclips and it really means a lot. We do not get loads of orders so seeing yours come through brightened up the day. Glad you and your family enjoy all the content also!🧡⚙️
Im now 14 Years old an i love collecting old bikes specally Military Bikes from the Swiss Army. My oldest one is from 1939. This Bikes have a awsome quality i also have a 1957, 1971, 1973 and one from 1987. This things are so good build and nearly unbreakabile.
My dad had one very much the same but his was a Raleigh and a few more decorative features like a quite elaborate front mud guard, and an enclosed chain guard. Lovely for cruising on level surface.
Very nice video. At 18:34 it's better to place the pin from the other side so that your pants won't get trapped on the threads coming out of the nut when pedaling and your pants will eventually interfere when your feet is on the front. You can figure it better at 20:28 with the pin very little on one side and big on the side of the nut + threads. 😀😀😀😀😀( this is five stars for your video ).
Thoroughly entertaining Lee & Simon, well done. I think this may well be my favourite production so far. I remember these bikes as a kid, very nostalgic. I used to love filling the rear hub with oil from my Dad's pump pot until it overflowed, 40 years on I find that it wasn't the thing to do! Lovely to meet you both the other week, the mug and T-Shirt are being put to great use in Cornwall!
We love doing these bikes just to hear all the childhood stories it seems we all have from them! Good to hear from you Paul and glad you’re enjoying the mug lol! Was very fun for both of us to meet you in the shop 🧡
Amazing restoration. It was really interesting to see how that vintage stormer archer had extremely similar internals to the sram i-motion 3 that is fitted to my Mercedes Smart E-bike. I recently did a restoration on it myself by doing a full service, overhaul, battery refresh and cosmetic repairs. You guys make excellent restoration and servicing videos so keep up the good work 👍.

god tier rebuild.
Haha God Tier comment 🧡
You should try some rust converter to treat the rust spots. It adds a nice black patina to the corrosion.
Yes! Missed you guys. Love these restorations. I think I like them more than when you have an expensive wonder bike in the shop.
They’re definitely most enjoyable to work on so we share your sentiment on that one!🧡⚙️

You are a credit to your profession sir
Very kind thanks Jake!🧡
Thoroughly enjoyed watching that. What an excellent restoration of what looks a really comfortable bike to get about town on. Loved it. 😁
Absolutely! Cant beat these old town bikes for comfort, the only draw back is the weight🧡
Sounds awesome, you can’t beat a nice patina!🧡⚙️
You guys are mindblowing! Love to repair and bring back life to old bikes myself and you are so often an inspiration to me!
Lovely! Greetings from Hamburg, Germany
Thanks very much for watching!🧡🇩🇪
I think this is the best one yet chaps, great stuff!
It’s our longest one yet so maybe! Thanks fallington it’s great you’re still enjoying all the videos🧡
You may have just found an extra product line for your website! 🚲
Maybe lol!🧡⚙️
Currently restoring a 1951 Rudge sports tourist and this is a massive help of a video! Glad to not have to deal with rod brakes
That’s great news! Definitely the right decision. Thanks very much for supporting the channel and sharing it🧡
Incredible job and amazing results. Thanks Lee and Simon. This is another restoration for the history books!! Beautiful bike. 👍
Another one in the can, onto the next! Thanks for all the support across the channel Todd🧡⚙️

Awesome! Thanks for watching 🧡
A fantastic rebuild of a wonderful old bike well done
Thank you kindly!🧡⚙️
That’s a mega collection!🧡
Gorgeous chainring!
Great tip!🧡⚙️
Very interesting that the technology is the same, thanks for watching!🧡⚙️
What a perf! Lovely triumph bike!
You know we love the old school cool! Thanks for the support🧡
