  • Stephen Jenkinson, MSW, MTS is an author, teacher, farmer, and founder of the Orphan Wisdom School in Ontario, Canada. A former counseling director of palliative care at a major Canadian hospital, Stephen has earned renown for his speaking and writing on the subject of death and dying. In fact, the breadth of his thought and work extends far beyond the death trade, touching on many aspects of culture, notably language and etymology, money, agriculture, and the ‘unauthorized history of Western civilization.’
We interviewed Stephen in February 2019, after he delivered a Reading & Reportage on his latest book, COME OF AGE: The Case for Elderhood in a Time of Trouble (North Atlantic, 2018) in Los Angeles. The event was the first offering from The BirdHouse Wisdom Series.
The BirdHouse is a fiscally sponsored project of the 501(c)3 Dignity of Man Foundation, serving as a hub of exchange in Hollywood for those attracted to caring for the land and each other, through arts and ecology. The Wisdom Series is a program of invited guest speakers and thought leaders addressing issues of environment, culture, and regenerative living.

Now I understand my fascination with the history of my ancestors and those of my now dead spouse and how I continue to feel a connection with them: Finnish, Scots Irish, Irish, Italians. I have told others(whose eye glaze over) that to remember them and their trials and stories is to keep them close by. Never done a shamanic workshop, never will I suppose but (now 1/3 through Die Wise) beginning to feel some sense of the patterns that have shaped my 83 years. No grandchildren but I share the family sleuth work with all those great nieces and others who care. Maybe that’s part of my work, Thank you for your insights and your mastery of the English language, spoken and written. (The Walmart of Spiirituality!)

I love your interviews and I have a lot of respect for you. One thing I have to say though.....I am German and I am a grandchild of the "nazi generation". I do not remember that part of German history being hidden from me....rather the opposite. We went over it several times in school. I grew up with deep disdain for the deeds of the nazis. Maybe it was part of me leaving Germany in my 20s and moving to the USA, just to find what you are talking about....a fake kind of freedom and as of today a fascist regime. Not fascist like Hitler, but in a way more subtle and maybe even more dangerous. By having listened to you, I start feeling the disconnect from my ancestors....this is hitting me by surprise but you made me cry because this deeply resonates. My family took it hard when I left and I didn't understand back then why. I am now getting a hint of it. I have to admit I start to feel deeply uprooted and lost and I wish I could go back but that is now impossible as I am 51 and have entanglements and Germany has jet again turned totalitarian under Corona. I will continue to listen to your podcasts and interviews....I think a lot about death lately....I need to get aligned. Thank you.
