I Used an Ordinary Sponge to Create Dramatic Clouds ~ Painting Clouds in Acrylic
- Creating dramatic clouds with acrylic paints and an ordinary sponge is remarkably easy and satisfying. It's easy enough for beginners and seasoned artists alike. With just a few simple techniques, one can transform a blank canvas into a picturesque sky scene.
Using a sponge allows for a soft and natural texture, mimicking the wispy and ethereal nature of clouds. Simply dabbing or stippling the sponge lightly onto the canvas with varying shades of white, paynes gray, and dioxazine purple acrylic paints creates layers of depth and dimension, effortlessly capturing the fluffy and billowy shapes of clouds. By adjusting the pressure and angle of the sponge, one can control the density and shape of the clouds, making it a versatile and intuitive method for artists of all skill levels. Whether it's a bright sunny day or a stormy sky, creating clouds with acrylic paints and a sponge offers endless possibilities for artistic expression.

Helllooo Everyone! So excited to share with you my latest sponge painting. It's a tutorial I think you won't want to miss! If you haven't subscribed, please do. I would also really appreciate a thumbs up on this video. Thank you and have a great day ❤❤😁😁👍👍
Soraya I love your sponge technique🥰Do you wash the sponges after use and reuse them again on other paintings or do you discard them. And always use new clean spong?
@@SoulArtist1 Hi! I always wash and let dry completely, then reuse. If I have forgotten, then they are too crusty and unfortunately, I have to start with a new one....lol Hope that helps. Have a great day and thanks for watching!
I’m going from this video - into my studio to paint using your method. I can’t express how much you’ve inspired me and freed me to express beauty like you do. 😍
That is absolutely wonderful to hear!Thank you for watching 😀
"And that's OK"...I've been using that phrase as I paint now. I am newer to painting and have so enjoyed your videos. You are a gem! Thank you for your honest approach and for your beautiful art you share with all of us!! ❤
You are so welcome! Such a great comment to receive. Thank you 💕
Wonderful to watch how you flow along and shift perspectives; seems so easy and natural for you! Txz Jeanne
Thank you so much! Very much appreciated 😁
Stunning absolutely stunning.
Thank you so much!
I look forward to trying this! It's so beautiful. Clouds are my favorite.
Have fun! Thank you 😁
Hi! I taught art at a junior college for 20 years & never thought of this! Your art is Wonderful! 💙🧡💚
Hi😀 Thank you so much! As ‘they’ say…. you learn something new everyday !
Loving this. I haven’t tried yet, I’m watching closely your paintings with the sponge making myself familiar with your technique.
Awesome! Thanks so much 😁🩷
🎉
Soraya I love the texture in this piece and the way it's created is amazing...I love how you change up your sponges and brushes...you really are awesome in all you do...I love the burnt Sienna background...this makes for such a dramatic piece...I love it!

So so beautiful , love you colour range . You make me want to try your way .
Go for it! Thanks for watching 😁
Just love this impressionistic sky and sea. Regards from Aotearoa New Zealand
Wonderful to hear!! Thank you 😁💖
I love how the Burnt Sienna adds light and contrast and warmthh to this beautful painting. The waves appear to be swelling up as the cloudy sky hints of a coming storm. The more I look at this painting, the more I am drawn in. What a remarkable and beautiful creation!! You rock it again!! 💖
Aw! Thank you so very much Cathy 😁💖

Encore merci. 😀😀😀😀
Sounds beautiful! Thank you 😁💖
i love how you work your brush and sponge to take the painting to another level. I understand what you mean by overwork until you're happy and don't worry about what other people say, how true and how right you are!!!
Thank you so much Aileen 😁💖
I like it. It's different. It's as if you let the paint guide your hand.
At timestamp 13:41, imagined sun rays coming up from behind the clouds.
Thank you 😁💖 it actually feels that way !
Really really nice I love the colors
Thank you 😁
Hello Soraya, this painting is fabulous, I got lost in the perspective of the painting, as if I was there.

Magnifique👌 merci 🙏 (Marie de Paris)
Merci a vous!
So dramatically stunning with th colors! Soraya I tend to over “overwork” my paintings until I’m satisfied with what I see. Don’ let anyone tell you that you “overwork” the painting. It’s your art and you are the artist👩🎨
Thank you so very much ❤️ I appreciate it a lot!
This turned out beautiful 😍 your work is amazing.. Loved this method. ❤

Awesome! Thanks 😁
Wonderful~~ unique art techniques stand out. Nice day💟
Thank you so much 😀
Its a brilliant idea and it looks better than brush painted ones, but how did you think of it? And what is your brush painting like are you really competant?
I’ve been using a sponge for many years. It came to me one day that it would be a good tool. I have many paintings that I use a brush as well.
Wow great painting technique 😮
Many thanks 😁
wow nice sponge painting 🤗🤗
Thank you! Cheers!

Hi. I love your work. Do you prime your canvas before toning?
Thank you! No I don’t prime it. In this case I created patterns and texture and let it dry. Then put the tone colour. Thanks for watching 😁
Do you let layers dry in between different colours or just keep adding while wet. Your art your choice when to stop. You are very talented thank you.
Thank you so very much 😁 Because I’m putting so little paint at a time it dries very quickly. If you want to have the colours blend then add while still wet. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😁
Wow that looks amazing ❤❤
Thanks so much 😁
Another gorgeous sponge painting!!!! I just love you and your painting. I appreciate your explaining so well.
Ok, I tried the sponge. I’m wondering if I didn’t have enough paint on the sponge. I ended up using a brush and results aren’t the same. Also, can you reuse sponges once cleaned? The paint hardened and I ended up trimming old paint off. Thanks SO much!! Patti
Thank you so much Patti😀💖 I’m so glad to hear that you tried it. You will have to keep experimenting with the amount of paint. This will depend on how far you spread it and the area you want to cover. Not sure if that’s clear. So, in other words, small area , use less paint. You’ll get the feel for it. If the sponge you’re using is left for a long period of time then it will dry out. I use the same sponge but if I need to get a clean one, then I put the old sponge in water. I always clean , dry and reuse my sponges. Hope that helps. 😀
Thank you so much. I appreciate it very much ❤❤
Thank you 🙏
That is an EPIC ! looking painting ! Big like from me !
Thank you so much 😀
very pretty, do you use slow drying medium or glazing medium to keep the paints from drying as you are blending? I do the same just let my imagination take over, lots of fun.
I don't use any mediums. A bit of water when needed but I always start with a dry sponge and a dry canvas. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😁
ingredible Luv it
Thank you 😁❤️
How do you prepare your canvas and do you use varnish when your finished. I love your technique, thank you from Australia.
Thank you! I don’t prepare my canvas in any way. In this case I painted a base colour to go over a failed attempt at a painting. Otherwise if I’m working on a new canvas, I just start painting. No gesso. Nothing. Dry canvas. After the painting is done I leave it to cure for at least 2-3 days. I varnish with spray varnish. I find I get a nice smooth finish that way. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching from Australia! Wow😁
Hi, I love your work. I’ve been trying it myself, but have some challenges. Do you let each color dry on the canvas before switching colors. I think I blend mine too much and wind up with “browns.”
Thanks so much! When I apply the colours, it is with minimal amounts so most often they dry very quickly. I also am using colours that will blend beautifully even if they are wet. If you’re using colours on the opposite side of the spectrum you will get a muddy finish. Hope that helps. Please let me know how it goes 😀
Hi. I work with my church dolng paintings.
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Very pretty, I will try this technique. Do you dilute your paint ?
Hi! Thanks. No I don’t dilute. If required I use a small drop of water. Thanks for watching 😁
🎉❤
😁🙏
👏👏👏👏👍♥️
😀👍🏻❤️
This is absolutely gorgeous I think I’m going to try this is this a regular canvas your working on?
Thank you! Yes, just a regular canvas. 😁
Beautiful. Normally when you keep working paint that way it comes off, how is she preventing that? Is this all one session or drying in between? Thank you
I’ve never had any issues with the paint coming off. I don’t add any water or additives. I use minimal amounts of paint and so it dries quickly. Most of this painting was done in one session. I completed it the next day. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😁
Thank you!@@SorayaZiziArtist
I’d love to try this it looks like it’s enjoyable but kinda scared it would just turn into looking like mud .
You should try it. Avoid colours that would create mud as an example purple and yellow….
So I'm trying this now for the first time. I am stunned at how awful it looks! I'm thinking there may be two critical issues that affect this style of painting: one is the relative amount of "dryness" of the paint: both what has already been applied, and what you are busy applying. I think I started off with way too much paint on the sponge, and worked too "wet". My "clouds" just end up monochrome, with no accents from light on the outside to darker further in (I can get this effect with a brush, but not a sponge). The other is scale. I'm trying a smaller canvas (19 x 28 inches), and the sponge seems to "big" for that size. I think I need to find a smaller "sponge" for this size of canvas? Just my initial thoughts - I may be wrong..
Yes, you’re absolutely right.
You need very small amounts of paint and for that size of canvas you must use a much smaller sponge.
I hope it hasn’t put you off for trying again.
Think of what you have created up to this point as a base for another layer on top.
Also remember that you’ve learned a lot by this first attempt.
Good luck!
Exactly! Thanks so much for your considered reply!@@SorayaZiziArtist
Do you wet the sponge with water before starting
Hi! No I did not. Thanks for watching 😁
Love love love!
