The separation between your left hand "groove" and your right hand "lead lines" is magnificent to watch. I can't even contemplate the complexity of this piece much less your stellar performance. Bravo!
Music is subjective. And our liking of stuff depends on taste. I don't like what he's done. I have a very broad mind when it comes to music - jazz, classical, world, prog, brass band, Latin etc. I just don't like this - too noisy, too busy. Virtuouso, sure, but I'm of the school that thinks less is more - and that he certainly ain't!
This particular instrument is a dark bamboo Grand Stick in the Classic tuning with a high bass 4th, hybrid EMG melody/Stickup bass. Hope that answers the question, and thank for the interest.
thanks to everyone for all the kind comments. My inspiration for this arrangement is the "801 Live" version with the amazing Simon Phillips on drums. Hedges was amazing, though, thanks for the reminder about him.
I love KC and Tony Levin so YT led me to this ridiculous virtuoso performance. Count me as blown away. Melody, lead, bass line and harmony all in one. Fantastic
I was at NAMM in Anaheim in 1997 and Greg played "Tomorrow Never Knows" right in front of me (I was the only one watching) and I was struck stupid by his playing. A stiff wind could have knocked me over. My jaw dropped and I had goosebumps. Greg is the best I've seen on the Stick. Trey Gunn is excellent too as is Rob Martino. But I gotta say Greg is the master. Beyond belief.
When I first heard the transition into the solo and the solo itself, it was one of those moments in a live performance that I will never forget and that still excites me today. Many, many thanks
This is one of the advantages of using the Stick's more common "crossed" hand orientation. By reaching over the strings both hands have access to the whole instrument all the time. Glad you like it.
If there was a way that I could like this video a hundred times, I would. I just absolutely love it. I'm a guitar player, but I want one of "those"! And the way that he plays is just so beautiful to my heart. Nah I would like it like 200 times, I think that's how many times I've watched it. Thank you for the greatness.
Greg, every time I watch this video I find new things to love about it. If it wasn't for this I would have my Stick. Absolutely love it every time I watch this. Cheers, Evan
First time, talented musician reflecting the endless capacity of the human brain in an amazing interpretation of a beautiful masterpiece by an equally unique band!
What an amazing instrument - I'd never seen a Chapman Stick before - it's as fascinating watching this incredibly talented gentleman play it as it is to listen.
I've watched a few more videos now, and I would just like to say how awesome you are. I'm just about to turn 42, and you're just awesome, I love your stuff, I just love it I've been playing guitar for like 25 years, but what you do is amazing! Just love it, keep it up.
I just love the deep sonorous tone of the bass, especially with that reverb, and then an almost banjo-like trebble towards the ending. A truely versatile instrument and I am loving diving through youtube surfing a sound wave and finding musicians I never knew of before who are delighting me at every turn. Fabulous. Thank you.
Really appreciate what you have put together for us to listen to Greg. Love your style and ideas. Thanks so much. I'm sure I've got heaps of friends I can share this with who will appreciated it as much. Cheers.
Greg, you are right... I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they either meant to hit the thumbs up button or had the sound off. Very inspirational, thank you!
This guy came to our writing camp at UVA in the mid-80's and played for us. He told us all about this strange contraption he had, and let the more musically curious of us see what we could get out of it. I've remembered him ever since, and still have the cassette tape I bought from him! He deserves so much more recognition. He's amazing. His "Blue Ridge" is one of my favorites. And you know what--he hasn't aged a day, either!
I just discovered this and I'm finding out the man is gone? This is simply insanely good stuff.I have seen Tony Levin live. This guy takes it to a different level. Wow.
This is my current favorite song. My current favorite new find as an artist. Exposed to this instrument via Tony Levin and KC (also Trey Gunn) in the early 80's. Took me about three years for someone to explain to me that I was not listening to a bass guitar. My fascination with this instrument in his hands made this my favorite musical instrument. This technique is even broader. I bet you make Emmett proud. Headed to your website, hopefully to do some Christmas shopping.
I probably commented on this earlier, but listening or listening again doesn't matter, it is really fine. I'm still learning from the summer session two years ago, plus your new video, which is really helpful, and I can see progress even if others may not notice the difference. You are a fine teacher as well as artist.
I am also in VA, Mineral, you are SICK! I love you and Rob, two virtuosos of the stick. Hit me up. That was GREAT what did splitting channels, awesome.
It's not often I come across a piece I need to keep listening to over and over....but this is one. Great work, and nice choice for a medley. I especially like the "split" sound with the distortion lead part. I'll be checking out some more of your stuff. Keep up the good music!
Very power performance!! Fat sound on level of Pink Floyd! Eternal musical theme plus excelent impro interpretation! Thanks to Greg!! 20 ******************* =)
Thank for the kind comments. I've written two books and have also released a method DVD last year. Emmett's book, Free Hands is a great resource, and there are also books and DVDs by Steve Adelson and Bob Culbertson. We all have very different approaches to playing and teaching. I also do lesson via skype.
Stick Enterprises carries a huge inventory of strings for all imaginable tunings of The Stick. Their strings are custom selected for good tapping sound and feel. Just write to or call them.
Fantastic cover of a classic song, Greg! I had the unique (and rare I imagine) treat of being able to see you both solo as well as with The Greg Howard Band (AFAIR it was around 2002) in the the greater Cincinnati/Newport, KY area and came away with a far great understanding of what's possible with a Stick. Although I haven't gotten mine yet (a combo of cost as well as fear of failure I suppose) when I do so you'll be near the top of the list as to "why?" :-)
I discovered Greg Howard and the Chapman Stick at Enigma Garden Cafe, an "old-school" (nothing like Starbux) style coffee house near downtown Las Vegas. It must have been 1994 or 1995 (Maybe Greg will chime in and tell me for sure when it was.) There were maybe 30 people there. Having been a guitar player most of my life, I was blown away.
RIP master. The echoes of this masterpiece will chime in eternity
No way... RIP.
Wow. What the hell. I’m feeling like a douche. I just found out now
@@renat321 Same here. RIP Greg.
RIP Greg. This is awesome. I'm gonna miss you telling me about your gigs and saying "You should come"
The separation between your left hand "groove" and your right hand "lead lines" is magnificent to watch. I can't even contemplate the complexity of this piece much less your stellar performance. Bravo!
I see people THIS talented and I feel SO empty. The soul quenching joy of being able to express yourself so wonderfully should be everyone's gift.
People disliked this video? Why? This dude is an incredible musician.
True, he is just brilliant, but I think the choice of song is not popular.
It is always important to have the right song choice at an exhibition.
There people disliking every video. digital vandals and hooligans. quit obsessing about thumbs down counts.
They are hardcore Trump supporters that's why. (Losers).

Love it so so much
I will always miss you, Greg. I cherish all the notes ♪♫♪ you left us.
that's some next level interpretation right there... well done man.
I tried to play on once. I play keyboards, but on this instrument, I believe one's brain has to be in 5 or 6 sections.
thanks to everyone for all the kind comments. My inspiration for this arrangement is the "801 Live" version with the amazing Simon Phillips on drums. Hedges was amazing, though, thanks for the reminder about him.
Fellow UVa TKE here . . . so glad you mention the 801 Live version . . . I've been proselytizing that version since, well . . . UVa!
I love KC and Tony Levin so YT led me to this ridiculous virtuoso performance. Count me as blown away. Melody, lead, bass line and harmony all in one. Fantastic
Made my hair stand when you broke into the melody .... This is too much to handle !!
Same here!!

Beautiful medley with Norwegian Wood! Beautiful, clean, with feel and virtuosism! Loved it, greetings from Argentina!
No words,...beyond words,...all I can say is, thank you.
Thanks, very kind comment!

Glad you like it.
Like it?? I LOVE IT! Wow dude! You 'have it' - it just pours out - not too many people have this, at least imho.
Utterly mesmerizing and mind-blowing! Beautiful playing.
I was simply amazed where the two great Beatles songs marged into one great arrangement. Thanks for playing!
This performance introduced my jaw to the floor! Amazing! A great Beatles song as well.
If there was a way that I could like this video a hundred times, I would. I just absolutely love it. I'm a guitar player, but I want one of "those"! You have to keep coming back to this amazing performance!
Greg Howard is absolutely superb!
Greg, every time I watch this video I find new things to love about it. If it wasn't for this I would have my Stick. Absolutely love it every time I watch this. Cheers, Evan
I keep coming back to this. Mind blown, yet again. The Stick and the tune are perfect for each other, and this is done so well... .
Love this
..... I can't figure the stick out... my bassplayer has one... beyond me... but this is truly special... nice norwegian wood mashup. :)
Damn this is extraordinary.
First time, talented musician reflecting the endless capacity of the human brain in an amazing interpretation of a beautiful masterpiece by an equally unique band!
Really amazing creativity and musicianship!! Just so cool on so many levels!!
What an amazing instrument - I'd never seen a Chapman Stick before - it's as fascinating watching this incredibly talented gentleman play it as it is to listen.
Wow!
Just beautiful. ❤
RIP. A very talented musician.
Wow, I was totally mesmerized and can't believe all of the sound that is capable of, love it!
I never get tired of watching this. Amazing performance.
Anyone who gave this a thumbs-down is trying way too hard to prove they are a hard-core Beatles fan.
The middle part lapsed into Norwegian Wood. Such talent. Beautifully played.
Daniel Hebner I'm not sure it was a lapse. The "solo" was well-worked out. A lot of hard work gives good results. It rocked. :)
Always great performances from Greg!
I've watched a few more videos now, and I would just like to say how awesome you are. I'm just about to turn 42, and you're just awesome, I love your stuff, I just love it I've been playing guitar for like 25 years, but what you do is amazing! Just love it, keep it up.
Absolutely extraordinary performance - BRAVO!!!! I was in awe.
You get the best of both worlds, and more. There are many things about The Stick that are truly unique to The Stick.
I just love the deep sonorous tone of the bass, especially with that reverb, and then an almost banjo-like trebble towards the ending. A truely versatile instrument and I am loving diving through youtube surfing a sound wave and finding musicians I never knew of before who are delighting me at every turn. Fabulous. Thank you.
This must be the most exciting stick arrangement and performance here on youtube. I almost have tears in my eyes. Thank you!
Feeling the Chapman Stick Vibes All the way in UP Michigan
Awesome how good this sounds! The original, just two chords but this man has made it so much better. 👏🏻😊 Thanks. Drums, too. Perfectly done.
Fantastic,,, what a delicious tone and sound!!

Beautiful sound, great arrangement. Viva the Beatles.

Hey, this sounds amazing! Thank you for posting this
Great performance!
Fantastic!
Wow man you are phenomenal. Great stuff!
I have this CD called Water on the Moon. Greg improvises I think all the way through on this one, and really pushes the envelope. I like that.
Another level!
Many regards,

Here in 2020. This is bomb, dude.
Thanks very much. High praise indeed. Bob is a monster player.
Great playing as always, Greg! I wish I could have been there. See you at FredTap!

Excellent ! The intro reminds me of Alan Parsons. Maybe the music of Alan Parsons can also be beautifully arranged for Chapman Stick by Greg.
What an awesome sound you have! I wish I could try out playing a chapman stick. It looks so fun

HOLY CRAP! THIS IS AWESOME! 😀
Wow holy crap. You sir, are amazing.
Really really awesome. If I could afford a stick, I'd buy one for sure.

Awesome. Both John and Greg, the interpreter.
