I've been gathering what I can from the woods around here, I'm hoping I can just grow what I've collected in my grow bags in this stuff instead of having to pay to mix in vermiculite and peat moss. I figure if it's all free, and my seeds are free, it really wouldn't be a loss. Thanks for the advice!

I would just make sure the area where you compost has plenty of air and water. These help aid in decomposition. And learn how to compost. There is technique to it. The Lowenfes book described above has some good instructions. If you want a simple compost bin design, use 4 pallets stacked on their sides formed into a square (use angle brackets to hold them together). The slats on the sides provide a lot of air flow, and the top is open so rain falls in. Plus you can get pallets for free and build this bin for next to nothing. Once it gets going and you have lots of organisms decomposting the material, you will find that material breaks down quickly.
As a layman, it seems to me a good idea to garner recycling efforts to reconstitute dirt on a macro level. Like, recycling food waste for this effort. Can you point me in the right direction for learning about efforts like this if they exist?
Encourage others to do this as well. Your neighbors family and friends. This will be key to preventing climate change and ensuring human survival for years to come.

yeah, cool fairytale story. soil here in australia is extremrly poor, especially phosphorus poor. i'm growing veggies and fruit developed to grow in high nutrient levels; instead of growing eucalyptus trees.
The specifics may vary a bit for different regions and different goals, but the basic concept of rehabilitating soil using organic matter and plants is universally true. How do you think Nature grew fruit, etc for the millions of years before we humans invented our chemical fertilizers? Given your location and goals, I recommend checking out Walter Jehne. He is an incredible microbiologist working in Australia. I'm sure his work can help your operation. Cheers!

The answer is yes, if you add enough organic compost over time into the sand it will eventually become soil.
