  • When most ski resorts are shutting down for the season, Beartooth Basin in Montana is just getting started. It’s backcountry skiing with a lift for diehard skiers like Kalen Thorien and Michael “Bird” Shaffer.

Skied it a few times 30 years ago. We literally put our skis on in my Toyota van and skied the run with the car in it ( 57 Chevy?) outta the rig...good times!

Go to Riksgransen. Midnight sun for 1,5 months, opens in march aswell, dont stop snowing until may, but when it does its still at least 2 months more before the snow is gone

Looks like fun, but at my home mountain, where I work and ski for free, we're often open until July and even August with b/c through the summer.

Yeah, but excluding like mammoth and a-basin, most ski resorts are only open until april. my local mountain (which has the longest season in the area) is only open generally thanksgiving to middle of april. thats what you get with lower elevation mountains, like mine, the top elevation is 6000 ft, not like 12,000 of some of the colorado mountains

I've suggested the slogan to our marketing department: "The Altitude Advantage". Given certain conditions, Squaw, at 9,000' will get rain while we get snow. Our main base area is at 9,000' and the top is over 11,000'. If you go further north, lower elevations get more snow, but the days are shorter and the temps are all around colder. I really like a moderate latitude with higher altitude. Plus, there are plenty of higher peaks for mountaineering and ski mountaineering.

Scott Gibson that’s fair. Most of the places I ski or ride require more gear than just my skins to access them, so I can acknowledge the drawbacks, but I love being able to ski down 3-6000 vertical feet without running into people or having to hop on a lift. To each his own I suppose.
