@@JakeBaldino Speaking of ARA, I really liked that one, runs like crap on my PC tho, but load times between turns are incredibly fast, way faster than CIV. I know a lot of people were disappointed with ARA tho, because its truly a resource management game first and foremost IMO, You need to craft one thing to be able to craft another thing, so your city would be happy etc etc. Its a micro management game, if you come into expecting lots of warring and moving military units in fun ways, you can end up being disappointed.
I know. I don’t even play these kinds of games. But I love learning about all kinds of games and keeping up on the worlds and art and creation of games. Jake’s the GOAT.
I picked first on sale, tried steamdecking while at hospital, naw, not a steamdeck game. I got installed it on PC now for months, but I just cant find the mood to try it out, I am intimidated by new things, but I know it would be my type of game. Sequel I have no doubt wouldn't run on my PC, seems to be a CPU demanding game as a lot of strategy titles are these days.
@@TheRealUcanUwill best advice, you just gotta jump in. Mess around with the main campaign. I bought FP1 a year before actually playing it. And don't feel bad if you lose. I'm on my 6th attempt of the last autumn dlc (don't start with that).
Love Frostpunk 2, looking forward to the DLC. If we get something even near the quality of the Last Autumn for FP2, Frostpunk fans will be eating good.
I’m so happy you loved it I was worried the change would be too much but I liked it too I had to take a break cause now I’m addicted to Metal Slug tactics
It still is a breath of fresh air though, new players seem to be really invested into it while those who played the first one seemed to have, for some reason, different expectations
Speaking as a veteran who loves the sequel as much as the original, I think the issue is just that, expectations. 11bit was very public about making huge changes to the formula for Frostpunk 2. But many OG fans skipped the news articles, the blogs, the footage, and went in blind. I know because that's what I did. That is a gamble and you can't get too salty about a recipe change when they have been so public about those plans. I'm absolutely sure many fairly just didn't gel with the new 4X elements, but there was a lot of undue salt in reviews that I think stems from "gambler's regret".
You have the best gaming related channel on RUclips in my opinion because you focus more on positivity and constructive criticism rather than just ripping into game developers and just crapping all over the games like many other channels are doing. Keep going with this formula because it separates you from the others out there.
I think its good but not great. There were definitly episodes that were making me fall asleep after work. Maybe should have watched them on a friday instead of monday
When I played the early access I was on the camp of "oh no this is a lot more different than I expected", but I kept my pre-order and when I played the final game it very quickly became the "oooooohhhhh now I see where they;'re going with this" camp. While I think ultimately I personally still love FP1 more due to the more intimate nature of that game, I definitely will still say that this is a worthy successor and that the core and soul of Frostpunk is very much preserved despite how different it is, I also think FP2 will be infinitely more replayable than FP1 too. Hope that there are more scenarios coming via DLC in the future like the first game got
Jake's ideal game in his head: Tony Hawk Pro Skater with guns Jake's ideal game in the world: Complex city management. Couldn't get any more different. Love it
Frostpunk 1, as many strategy games, has this "narrow" correct way of playing to perfection, even more so on high difficulty where consequences of mistakes can be brutal, but despite that the game offers surprising amount of freedom of approach. Having that allows the game to create memories backed up by stress and rewards from problem solving. My 'core memory' would be my first attempt of The Last Autumn DLC, in which I unintentionally made the game have just brutal difficulty level, despite playing on normal. Because I only used 2 harbor spaces out of 4, resources were very scarce, food was non-existent to the point of some starving, all objectives were fulfilled at absolute last moment with delays, some were even failed and had to be replayed, and workforce was insufficient at all times. But I managed to finish it and looked back at an amazing journey I created myself, and this time it was the journey that matters. :)
Gotta agree, I prefer the feel of FP1. More 'tactile' maybe? FP2 has some nice QoL improvements, such as the heating system with adjacency and natural shelter bonuses. Something about 2 just feels less life or death
I was following Frostpunk 2 updates quite closely before it came out and actually played the Beta in the spring, so I knew what to expect. Frostpunk 1 is one of my favourites ever, so expectations were high, but I liked what they did rather than more of the same (would still love more FP1 DLC, though...). Also didn't get quite as addicted to FP2, but at least I'm not neglecting my life as much. 😅
That’s funny you are talking about this I played the first one last night for the first time and it was so cool. With all building sims I always get a quarter of the way through and go “dammit why did i do that?” looking at how inefficient my layout has become. I was frustrated by the limited map but this new “world” looks intimidating. I like that the first one felt very pick up and play-ish.
This is how I felt about Darkest Dungeon 2. The first is my favorite game of all time. And I was excited for the second game and am appreciative that they tried something new. It has its moments but I gravitate back to the first game. It feels like being spoiled for choice that there are two great games in the same universe. Just different games for different folks!!
i like sequels that still resembles the one before it but still manages to introduce a good amount of new ideas. there certainly is a sweet spot for that though that not many can nail. most just play it safe and introduce minor mechanics that dont justify a sequel and id ultimately prefer if they leaned in the direction of too much new over too little.
I do really like this second game. My only complaint with FP2 is that if you want to go back and try something different, you basically have to start over. There are 'chapters' or whatever, but it doesn't really checkpoint in a way I would like.
I’ve never played strategy/management games, maybe dip a toe here and there, but since these are on game pass I booted up FP2. I see the appeal but boy do I suck. I had no clue what I was doing and got my little town killed within the first hour. lol after losing, I realized what I did wrong and might do better a second try, but I just have too many other games to play right now. Everyone talks about how great last year was for gaming, but this year was pretty damn good too. I didn’t get to play nearly as many games as I wanted to.
I totally get that people loved the first game but I don't really know how or why you would make a sequel that was just the same game but more of it. I know lots of teams would do that but it seems like a dead end. I don't know how far they could have pushed that more personal level without it just feeling like a prettier version of the same thing. I don't know what would be gained from that. Trying something new feels like the right direction to me. Im not saying everyone has to like it, personal choice is personal choice. If you love the first game it still exists. Its not going anywhere and you can replay it whenever you want and there's nothing wrong with that.
I have the first game on Epic because they gave it away for free (more than once) but I found it SO stressful, I coudln't handle it. I really wanted to get into it though, I wanted to like it, but I'm just too anxious, I didn't want to spend my free time choosing who gets less screwed over. That and I also suck at strategy games.
I was totally thrown off by Frostpunk two. Not in a bad way. I was also impressed by how different it was, but i wasn't expecting it to be. I was liking everything but i had to step away and come back to it with a brain more open to learning rather than acting on what i already know. Which i haven't done yet hahaha. But i will and might tonight.
I like this sort of thing but im a console guy these days. I really struggled with the original frostpunk on controller. To many things to click. Have you played 2 with a controller? How is it if so?
Frostpunk 2 was and still is missing a lot of quality of life features from the first game. In trying to be so different, they didn't lose the magic. Rather, they lost the simple things: sound effects, the Ui, Ui & Menu navigation, game feedback, etc. All small things that added up into a weird feeling that was hard to put everyone's finger on.
The setting and circumstances are bleak but that is what drives and motivates you. The games imbue you with this fiery will to save humanity. "THE CITY MUST SURVIVE." It is very addicting. And you will get a lot of feel-good moments from providing heated homes, getting everyone medical care, building schools, etc.
I just don't get why so many people like these type games. It seems more like tedious and mundane work than fun to me. I play games for fun, not to do work and not even get paid for it. lol.
They shouldn't have called it frostpunk 2. Its misleading. They should have marketed it as a civilization type within the frostpunk universe and called it something else "frostpunk: (insert clever name here)"
Feels like a hexagon title style of game with zero impact of what your actions compose of. You have no connection to the people that you lead within this city. It's all bland.
You seemed derisive about people not liking something that is different than they like. WTF? If you play a game, and love it, then the next is very different, and FEELS different, than you have every right to express your displeasure. I'm fine with evolution, and games SHOULD evolve. But it's fine for a player base to say "Nope, not why I got in here." And stepping out. If another Bioshock ever comes out I'm likely not going to play it. I gave up on Final Fantasy at 13. And other than 14 to play with my family, I've only touched the others a bit and like them less and less. I started with the first one.
I will never tire of hearing Jake talk about strategy games.
Thank you!
