- Adam just received a full complement of Mission Model's premium hobby paints, and he embarks on a speed build of portable paint racks to properly store the over 120 bottles. It's the perfect example of a build that Adam loves constructing manually with the mill and table saw, even with access to laser cutter nearby. Adam can't wait to put these paints to use!

Looks to me that your next project needs to be; a Savaged library ladder system to reach all those Upper Shelves.
Hang pipe rails from above and offset from your walls of supply’s, materials, and Stuff. Build the ladder at an angle that will fit within aisle space, with wide steps and collapsable hand rail. And instead of wheels at top, large hooks to brace onto the support pipes above. Easy to move around the shop, and also tuck out of the way.

Great paint! Been using that stuff for years. Heavily pigmented. Not pre thinned so you get a lot of paint in a single bottle. Use their thinner. Follow their mix formula on their site. The poly additive makes the stuff quite durable too.

I like how he keeps the wooden plugs like any of us would. And like any of us, 6 years from now he'll still be moving them around thinking he'll use them some day. Then one day he will need circular pieces of wood and cut new ones completely forgetting about that bag of plugs he's been saving.

for the "wooden nickels"--I remember from adolescence visiting places such as perhaps Brasstown Bald or Rock City and the gift shops had things such as weather rocks (if it's wet, it's raining; swinging, it's windy; etc.) and specialty flavor candy. One that stuck with me was a pocket-sized wooden disc labeled a "round tuit." The joke on it was "now that I have a round tuit, I can finally get around to it!" So, I think a collection of A. Savage (say, fire branded) round tuits would do very well online and/or as Patreon gifts.
My wife and I recorded my daughter’s first steps while this video was playing on the TV in the background. Adam has made his way to be forever in the family video archives.
Adam savage is just so wholesome. Hes just a humble grandpa that is a celebrity and loves to build and that everyone loves to watch.

It's frustrating when scarcity brain kicks in and ends up setting a project back. It's nice to know that someone as experienced as Adam get's this now and again and that it's not just me! I just love these builds so much. Thanks for sharing!
I have a box of "future projects" where I store the things I come across that I will need obviously on a future project I want to do. Works a charm!
My problem is my future projects box takes up more space then my tools/supplies themselves.

Re:where to store things you only have one of. Lots of clothing stores have a designated “onesie rack” for when an item is almost sold out or there’s an online return of a style that isn’t normally carried in the store. The key is to not to let it become an interim dumping ground for stuff that has a proper home. If overtime you collect enough one-off items related to a specific project you can move them to a more permanent home. Alternatively set up an area divided into sections labeled with future projects where specific tools/materials for the project will be put as you acquire them (similar to gathering ingredients for a specific recipe before you start cooking).
Thank you for showing the real process where you make adjustments or start over and for explaining your reasoning. I have ADHD inattentive type complicated by perfectionism and anxiety. I rarely ever get past the idea/planning stage…best wishes!

This is so relaxing for me. I can identify with working in the shop, doing your thing, working through the problem and deciding solutions. Making a plan, working the plan, and just talking to yourself as you go. I enjoy the sound of your shop too. I have tinnitus, so I never hear silence anymore in my day to day life. But if I can distract my brain enough, I don't hear the ringing. So while I'm watching your video and I get engrossed in it, all I hear are the sounds of your shop, and it's so quiet there, and at some point I realize I don't hear the ringing anymore, but the silence of your shop.
YES! 8 per side means that as the line of colors expands, OR you find there are colors you use more frequently, you won't have shut yourself out of the ability to adapt or expand.

I personally use Nail Polish Racks to hold my model/airbrush paints. Specifically the clear acrylic stair step style. They are cheap and work perfectly!
Adam, thank you. 9:45 Watching your thought process on how to organize things like shown here, past videos, and Aurikatarina's videos, I finally had the motivation to reorganize my entire room/ living space. Right now, I only have very broad organizing to where I have to rummage within the drawer. HOWEVER, that is better than trying to remember which room it's in, where it is, if it's in a tote, etc. It's been a long process, taking.... well, years but I've been trying to figure it out then started physically working on it over the past few months.
This is perfect Adam. "I know, I could laser cut this." He could, and I created a similar solution using our laser a few months back.
But the joy in this channel is in witnessing Adam and crew crafting and hearing his thought process. That said, I wouldn't be bothered seeing him go through a full laser cut build for a storage solution at some point.

I love, LOVE the fact that he opts to do things the old fashioned way instead of using the laser cutter. There's a lot more pride in a project when your math is right, your cuts are right, and it all comes together. Good stuff.
As a side note I love that the method of shop movement is determined by altitude. Personally, my favorite is the Thirdman strata.
Even if I have NO plans of building something similar to what you build in your videos, I still watch the entire thing and pretty much every video you have made.
Love your process on everything you do. You are great at explaining what you are doing and why. That is why I watch.

I love Mission Models paints! I made my own storage rack some years ago using partial circles so there's nothing to obscure the name of the colors on the bottles. Also at an angle so lifting a bottle is a bit easier.
I’ve got mine in clear acrylic shelves mounted to a wall. The shelf is marketed for nail polish bottles. Holds all my Tamiya, Mission Model, Vallejo, and misc stuff nicely! Leaves me with more desk space and they’re right in front of me on the wall.
How much would all that paint cost?
@@lewiscantplay8639 at least $1.1k retail. 210 bottles at $5.25 USD. Some of the metallics are a little more.
@@lewiscantplay8639 in the UK they are approx £5-6 each bottle they are 30ml so 3 times as much quantity as say Tamiya or almost double vallejo, so I would say priced about the same per 10ml
This is just what I needed. I have over 120 bottles of model paints that I need some racks for. This has inspired me to build my own.
This process is so relatable. The thoughts going through his head are some of the exact same ones I have and it is gratifying to know that I'm not the only one who has those conflicts.
Very nice. I built something similar a while back, but used clear plastic for the retainer deck (with the holes) for better visibility of lables and such.
Have you considered using a Forstner bit instead of the annular cutter? You would avoid having to remove the bit every few passes.
Also, it is encouraging watching someone else suffer through miscalculations, false starts, etc.

Paint storage is the bane of my bench. When you have over 400 individual bottles, it gets old fast. Nice to see your system and thinking behind it.
I do instrumentation tubing for a living, and I was able to answer all of the decimal calculations. Finally my weird knowledge of decimals to a .0625 has paid off
Every damn time I see Adam's shop I drool like a bloodhound and giggle like a school girl. Nice shop! I have a nice shop, but nothing compared to his. Man it just looks fantastic!!!
They are some great paints 👍. Nice build brother! I’m actually in the middle of selling all my model stuff after 30+ years in the ultra scale arena working primarily in 1/12 scale formula one and super cars. I’m at about 8 years since my TBI and subsequent series of strokes; so I just have never recovered the dexterity to do so even remotely to the fine level I once did; that and an accompanying essential tremor kind of demand it. The great thing is that I’ve been creating/making in the woodworking /fine furniture space now for a few years (which as you imagine is also great physical and mental therapy). I’m 95/5 handtool only/power tool, so it’s also pretty safe for me to do unsupervised. I’ve sold much like I said, but also it’s incredibly difficult to recoup money out of anything but my airbrushes, compressors, selling paints by lots of 100+, and then Non-started large models. The detail stuff and 1/24 scale kits will most likely just get boxes and sent to a boys abs girls club or something like that. Always enjoy your content; the charm is that it’s a stream of thought in a build. Many content creators separate the two in videos. Stay well brother!
I have an old scroll saw Adam! It's from 1950s ish and is a sears and roebuck. I got it for free and it came with a few eletric motors I used for it. It works great, but I think it would be absolutely perfect for your foot pedal driven scroll saw. It is cast iron and is hefty and would look the part for that Era. It is the best one I have ever used and seen! I live only about 2 hours away from San Francisco in Merced. I have been collecting old sears and roebuck tools. I have a video about an old bandsaw on my channel aswell but not to be confused with the scroll saw I'm talking about.
I love watching these videos, just so nice to watch someone who has all the cool tools and using them to make cool stuff. Also I'm thinking I'll incorporate the tattoo idea into something with a customised approach or maybe having set measurements of the tattoo being certain parts of it.

Our hands (the skin) are just the best tools out there. Perfectly smooth yet at the same time grippy when needed but man, splinters just find a way in!

I've been on a bit of a Tested binge (again) and your videos are truly inspirational! In the past 3 days I got the urge to make some new handles for my beat up woodworking tools, which I did. One question came to my mind while watching though: aren't you afraid of getting paint dust on your precision tools when you spray paint in the same room you store them? I work in about a 5x5 metre room and I learned early on that if you spray paint there, the dust will get on EVERYTHING.
My solution for "where to put the scroll saw leather" is that I have a section of storage specifically for projects I can't or don't want to progress for an extended time. If a project has most or all of its pieces I store it alone in one container within that area, else I have a misc container for pieces like the leather. It's still a mess, but at least it's localized and each piece within the mess has a plan!

Hi Adam, I met you on Thursday at my place of work where you got to see some of the artefacts held on site. I heard you were on site filming and had to walk the building for some time to "accidentally" bump into you in our reception. Looking back on our meeting I think I fangirled some what as I didn't ask you anything at all about all the fantastic things you make on here. Mostly I wish I had asked if you wanted to see the view from our roof as you can see most of the famous landmarks of London., I would have then had the chance to chat a little more . But alas that was not to be as I felt I was holding you up, so I just said pleasure to meet you and left kicking myself for the rest of the afternoon. It was a pleasure to meet you in person and thank you for a fantastic Chanel and another wonderful look into the brain of Adam Savage at work. I don't know if you will get to see this but I felt compelled to contact you again to say thank you for all the videos and the infectious enthusiasm you show constantly Kind regards Gary.
When I cut stacks of steel, even if its from the same piece of bar stock, I put a piece of cardboard against the moving jaw and then tighten that against the stack. It helps fill those variances in the material width and keeps everything tight in-between the jaws.
Most of us would mark the pipe and then cut, your manic style always makes me anxious lol. 👍
That many holes is a great laser cutter project. Can't gang them like in the drillmill, but jigging up the laser bed to take many at once, set and forget.
Oh my god this is exactly what I need. I'm up to my hoop in Vallejo, Citadel, and Army Painter paint pots!! something like 500+ pots all different sizes and dropper bottles.

Seeing the paint racks brought me back to my dads shop Areogloss silkspan dope in every color! (Model airplane paint at the time)
One thing I've learnt from my own builds is that you always need more. Drawers always need to be deeper than you think, you always need more shelves than you think, etc. Padding the build out to accept extra bottles in the future is smart because you never know when they'll release another colour.
For storage of random/someday tools and items, I took a hint from a friend who thrifts and sells on eBay and keeps track of random things: multiple bins (labelled, numbered, whatever) and a spreadsheet updated when I remove or add something for future use. It's searchable, and I can find the one-of-a-kind item pretty quickly. That way I don't have to rely on memory. Things DO pile up on my worktable until I "file them", though.
I recently switched to mission
models as my go to, absolutely love the colors and ease of use.
What makes Mission model paint better/different than artist acrylics?
@@aristotle29 pre thinned for airbrushing and I like the colors they offer. The stick really nicely to resin, plastic, and metal too and it's easy to clean up. It is acrylic, so it's a bit soft. But for my stuff that's fine.
Oh I see your wearing the new Tom Saches shoes I love them very versatile.
One thing about building a rack like this that my father learned the hard way. His was a spice rack but the same principle applies.
The longest measurement on a bottle is not the height, but the diagonal.
He built a 3 level spice rack with little railings to hold everything in place, but with those railings it's impossible to fit the tallest bottles on to all but the top shelf, as there's not enough space with those railings to fit the bottles in on the diagonal required.
Thankfully most of the bottles fit fine, but he's still embarrassed by that mistake.

Adam, I know the feeling: where to put a miscellaneous "thing" you just can't throw out, but won't remember where you put it as it doesn't have a specific place.
My solution is an Excel spread sheet! List in alphabetic order or by material, then alphabetical, then it's location, sizes, amounts, description, etc. as needed.
Then you will know, in 5 years, exactly where your quart container of wooden nickles are located in your shop!

RE: Mission Models, keep the Polyurethane Additive in the 'fridge and it'll last a bit longer. Mine kept going off and turning into a white solid after about 6 mos. when left on the workshop shelf (and this in a climate controlled, dry basement that's a stable 70 deg F year round).
Take a picture of where you are storing your one off items, save the picture by the item name. When you need to find the item, look it up and when the items is used (if disposable or one use) remove the picture entry
I do exactly that! I also take pictures of items I'm running out of, labeling the pic's with "Buy", so that the next time I'm visiting the hard-ware store, I know exactly what I'm looking for. Just search for "buy" in your pictures. When you bought them, delete the photo.

I've been meaning to make a new holder of sorts for all my paints for a couple of years now. I have had one foe years, but now that the Vallejo style of paint bottle (for painting miniatures) is so commonplace, and they're way taller than my old Humbrol paint pots, I really need a new one.
I've been thinking of one like a expanding tool or fishing tackle box. Well, basically because that's the style I have now made out of wood.
I really should give it a go one day.
I too have been wanting to build something have mostly Vallejo but also many odds and ends in different bottles sizes but I prefer to keep them in roygbiv order then some sorting for all the other bits and pieces like thinners, decal sets, washes so not sure what to do
Adam i watch you almost every day and more than anything i want to see you move your shop into a giant awesome aircraft hanger or big warehouse. I know those walls are closing in on you, i can sense it.
The great thing about having a greater tolerance is that you have room for a color swatch of the paint on the wood for the bottle in that particular hole.

Pro Tip: Categorize things into three separate categories: tools, parts, and projects. Have a part that's for one and only one project? Make a box for it, toss it in the project stack. This also makes it easier to trim your random parts stash specifically because you know it's not earmarked for a project. Workbench too crowded? move some of the projects to cold storage. Parts box/bins overflowing? Must be time to reorganize, trim down, or get more/bigger storage containers.
