What wealth you have .... Land and water. There is no limit to what you can do. My family has been on our land for generations. Our tradition is to plant a food bearing tree or bush for each of us every year. You will have your own traditions and make your own history. Congratulations to you and your friends. Sunshine and happiness to you.
We actually had a very similar tradition back at our old place where we inoculated new shiitake and lion’s mane logs every year as well as planting some new perennial fruit trees. We’ll definitely keep that going at the new land 😊
Y'all are living my dreams I'm going to enjoy watching everything y'all do I'm a old lady and I pray that my grandchildren learn from y'all videos Being in nature you will feel GOD alot more
Please feel my words when I say I am Thrilled for you and your friends! What a blessing for you all! Looking forward to all the new adventures you will share with us. Sending all the best wishes and so much love.
Definitely save that clay! I don’t know if any of your or your friends are interested in ceramics, but it could be a great experiment to see if the clay is viable for making vessels! Eating off tableware made from clay on your own land sounds incredible
We were actually collecting it to use as the plaster for our walls, but there’s a strip of even purer clay that we found by the creek that we’re gonna use to throw some ceramics 🙂
I'm loving this new chapter of your lives, thanks so much for sharing, really looking forward to seeing everything come together and all of your future projects. All the best!
@@stravaganza7616 I'm under forty! Though, again, I'm pretty set on going someplace pretty cold. I want to set up someplace that's going to be more inhabitable in the future, not less :[]
It sounds like you guys are basically starting a real life stardew valley game 😂 Your plans sound incredible! I wish you all the best of luck with this big step. I have to admit I’m going to miss the homey ambiance of your old place!! As far as content creators, I strongly feel that you two align most strongly with my values and what I want to prioritize in life. Homegrown and home cooked food, foraging, respect for ecology, natural materials and most of all love and community. I hope you guys can bring a new vision to youtube for what “homesteading” is about, which is so focused on independence and self sufficiency to a toxic degree.
So many people have said the Stardew valley comment that I feel like we need to try playing it this winter! And yea there’s definitely a lot of the hyper-individualistic, antisocial homestead accounts on social media, but the other folks that live like us that we know in real life aren’t like that at all. I think it’s yet another weird social media distortion of humanity. Glad you’re enjoying it here though 😊
@ It definitely must be a result of taking the lifestyle to an extreme imo. From what I’ve heard, being ideologically committed to weaning yourself off of depending on society + have content to produce sounds good until it makes you realize *why* humans have developed communities to share labour, resources, and time in the first place ☺️ I don’t watch much homesteading content anymore but I’ve heard of people realizing that they can never have any time off and their entire “independent” system falls apart the moment they get a bit sick and have nobody to lean on.
@@isimerias I've started watching Anne of all trades and she talks about this exact thing. She ended up moving to a community in Tennessee so she wasn't doing 'all the things' herself.
When you found that spring, it brought childhood memories when we found a spring while spending time with my grandparents over a summer. The joy I felt. Congrats!
Would love to do this someday with friends!! Such a fan. Not to be super cynical, but one of the main things that worries me about doing something similar is what it might look like if relations deteriorate between groups on a shared property. You hear stories where everyone is of course all good friends when it starts (and we always hope it will be like that of course) but things happen and it can be a legal mess if things turn sour. If it's not too much info, do you guys all own the plot together or are they separate plots all in the same place owned independently? How much did you have to think about all that legal stuff? Again sorry for the cynicism!! This is a fantastic video and I look forward to watching everything you guys do with this blessing of a property moving forward!!
I’ve seen this fail miserably and I’ve seen this work beautifully! The key to the success I’ve seen is everyone’s core values are the same and they have become more family than friends. They also, in every situation of success, have their own home and space. But come together for the big projects. So, they are more neighbors.
Yea that’s actually exactly what we’re doing. We’re subdividing the land so we can each build and own our homes and then farming together, sharing resources and working together on projects just like we have been for years, but on rented land in the city
I'm so happy for you and your friends. it will be so interesting to see the projects you undertake and the way you develop this space for 3 families. You did a great job on narrating this video! And the light falling on you face makes your look luminous and perfect! I'm hoping for all good things for you and the others.
So fire is a great way to go, if you’re looking to use it I’d suggest looking at patch burning. You’ll have plots that you burn in cycles 2 or 3 years long. Ideally a spring burn one plot and a summer burn on another as well to increase forage quality going into the winter but that takes a fair amount of property. Letting it rest between burn/graze cycles helps increase diversity in plant life and yields better burns due to more fuel. If you’re already planning this ignore me. All the best.
So excited to follow this new journey. I like homesteading videos but doing it with friends and creating a community is awesome . I hope you make a straw bale home 😊❤
Haha well as a matter of fact that's exactly what kind of homes we're building! Silvan and our friend Annie have been doing strawbale building workshops for the past year and that's actually what we were collecting that clay for :)
Im so excited to see how the wheat turns out. So often i see people shy away from growing grains but grains are amazing. I recommend growing hull less barley and hull less oats as well, it really cuts down on the post harvest processing and makes hand threshing a breeze. Sorghum, amaranth and quinoa are other grains that are easy to thresh. Good luck!
Us too! And yea we usually grow a little patch of hulless oats every year and we'll definitely be doing a little field of them this year. We've never grown barley before since we don't really use it that much. What do people typically use it for other than beer?
@@HomegrownHandgatheredyou can use it in tonnes of ways, its by far the most filling feeling grain to me i think due to its fibre content. I use it whole like farro, in soups, a sweet porridge i just takes longer to cook then oatmeal, it can make a savoury porridge sort of like risotto, and i make a cold barley and lentil salad. You can also grind it into flour thats similar to other lower gluten wheat relatives like spelt and rye.

@@HomegrownHandgatheredthis is how I've considered doing it if I ever find folks with shared interest/values. Any thoughts about how to handle it if/when one family wants to sell their property down the line? Maybe a clause with first opportunity going to the other owners to buy them out.

That’s what we were planting in the beginning 🙂 Persimmons, serviceberries, native plums, pawpaws, chestnuts, etc
I’m so excited for you guys!! What are the details; parcel sizes, co-op organization, climate type, zone, bio region?
Thanks! We’re subdividing the parcels where our homes will be so we can each own our home and yard and then a 3rd parcel we’re gonna collectively own through an LLC where we can do farm dinners and community events. We’re in zone 6b in Appalachia
@@HomegrownHandgatheredthis is how I've considered doing it if I ever find folks with shared interest/values. Any thoughts about how to handle it if/when one family wants to sell their property down the line? Maybe a clause with first opportunity going to the other owners to buy them out.
The duck comments 😂😂😂
🤣🤣 had to leave that in
Did you move out of your old home already? What about winter, it sounds really cold in a barely furnished farm, hopefully you'll be safe until next season, then it will be amazing
Yea, we already insulated the barn and put on the doors and windows so it stays cozy in here even when it's freezing outside. We're installing a wood stove next week too and then we'll be toasty!
