I love a good wallow. A few more that I’ve enjoyed, featuring wretched girls/women (or which are wretched adjacent): Near to the Wild Heart by Clarice Lispector, The Days of Abandonment by Elena Ferrante, Wittgenstein's Mistress by David Markson, and even Franny and Zooey by JD Salinger.
as a perennially melancholy woman who enjoys reading the works of wretched women, i was immediately drawn to this video, and i find this to be a very solid list :) glad to have found yr channel!
wretched girl reading list is brat summer for introverts
Great list. I love the inclusion of Morrison’s Jazz. Can I suggest The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton as an addition to the list?
@@BookishTexan i alllmost included Custom of the Country bc Undine Spragg is wretched in her own sort of way, but havent read The House of Mirth yet!
@@KcIsReading I forgot about Miss Spragg! You are absolutely right.

& coincidentally i found yours yesterday! Gotta check out ur longing list :)
Wow! It's beautifully edited and I like how the quotes appear so artistically! Thanks for this! Love this!
I wonder if The Poisonwood Bible qualifies. Some wretched happenings in that one.
i hate to be the person to tell you this, but Toni Morrison is full-on dead
I am both heartbroken and feeling extremely stupid
But in my defense when i read these she was still with us 😔
You can check out the Unbearable lightness of being by Milan Kundera for a wretched winter. If you want...but you definitely should
I want to recommend the Blind Assassin by Atwood. The character is wretched not in an immediate or visceral way, but prolonged, sustained, seething.
❤
I looooved Jazz, a perfect nightmarish summer read. This is the only book I’ve ever read from her and I’m hooked!
eee loved this reading list :-)) intro shpiel was amazing btw, i felt set up for success(or wallowing) from the start
