It's late (or early) for me, really need to sleep. Always tough to make a video this fast 😅 I hope you still like it. Curious what you people think of the film. Have you seen it already? Will you watch it? How did you like it? Also shall we discuss this in more detail, in a live stream? Let me know ^^ PS: I liked the film enough to include it in my yearly LotR watch party stream cycle (next Watch Party Stream will be Two Towers btw, quite fitting 😄)
Your measured and fair critiques are always appreciated Chris. It's a refreshing change from the usual hysteric noise elsewhere on RUclips. I don't watch many films or much television these days, but if it comes to streaming I may give it a go.
It sounds like they played it a bit safe by sticking to PJ's style but also they did their homework meaning they at least cared somewhat about the lore. Since I have always loved anime visuals and combined with your hot take I think I will probably enjoy this film.
Yes they really played it safe (also the story). I mean they used their license. Maybe to not lose it or something, which resulted in a solid film, nothing groundbreaking though.
We can upscale it into a fully believable live-action like experience, thanks to the generative transformer models. Thank you for the honest review of this piece, Chris.
At least this was a fair review. Other ‘critics’ just bash it simply because ‘it’s not like Rings of Power’ (remember. They gave the show a 85 compared to this) And others (the viewers) just bash it because of ‘girlboss’ as if they’ve seen the movie
I don't mind the girl bossing but i wish they would have animated them with more tears, show us more emotions when you have already shown us tragedies , show us they have character arc and growth , they are vulnerable, grieving mourning yet strong and won't give up in the face of great misery and challenges , then it would have been perfect, one minor nitpick, that her kidnap scene is ridiculous, she isn't even get knocked out, it is only a gunny sack cover her head and she somehow pass out and in the Isengard , what a poor way to convey that situation
Greetings from Germany :) I will not watch the movie in a theater because I find this particular animation style totally off-putting, and I am not overly interested in the story. But you made a nice and very fair review. Just one minor thing: you shouldnˋt try to roll the "Rs". It sounds totally unnatural, and it doesnˋt even make a lot of sense if you are just mentioning a few names. I think itˋs only necessary in actual dialogues of the characters. But rolling the R in "Helm HammeRhand" doesnˋt make any sense whatsoever! "Hammerhand" is an English word after all, and it should be pronounced the English way. Tolkien himself only rolled the Rs when he used his invented languages or names which were used by the people who spoke these languages. As I said, itˋs a minor thing - but itˋs like a pebble in a shoe ;)
Thank you ^^ Regarding the pronunciation: I had this discussion for now 7+ years (started making lore videos 2017). And I also roll the Rs now for 7+ years, because I once decided to not anglicise the pronunciation of names on my channel. One reason was Tolkien described the pronunciation of e.g. Sndarin and Quenya names in quite a bit of detail and I invested some time into this topic. Another one is, that I can't anglicise English pronunciation for fantasy names, because English pronunciation in context of spelling makes no sense (see: though, through, tough, thorough, bomb, comb, tomb, dear, bear, etc; it only makes sense in context of a word's etymology; as a not native speaker pronunciation would become a guessing game). In contrast to your comment I also get a lot of positive comments for this endeavour, but I know the feedback on this was always a bit mixed. Still I have some videos with a million + views and a large average watch time/viewer, where I roll every R. So I guess it can't be that bad. In the case of Helm you are right though. The epithet "Hammerhand" is Modern English. I should say something like "hammor hand" if I want to pronounce it Old English. I thought it was also "hammer" in Old English, but seems I remembered it wrong. Interestingly I think I anglicised "Hornburg" in this video, which would also work as actual Old English name as well (/ˈhornburɣ/ or /ˈhornburx/ or maybe /ˈxornburɣ/ I guess). Some names Tolkien uses in this context like Súthburg or Glǽmscrafu (for the Glittering Cave) are clearly Old English, while Aglarond is Sindarin. But it's always a complicated topic.

@ThePhilosophersGames I am going to go see it this Saturday night. I'm excited for the two towers watch party as well.
Great stuff!

It could also offer explanation for how the rohirrim seemed to have had a familiarity with fighting oliphants in the return of the king.

Great review.
Will be seeing it Monday
Oh I wasn’t aware it was going to be shown in movie theaters. Going to take my niece & brother!
Looking forward to seeing the movie. I've been meaning to watch some animes for years, maybe this will be the start.
Thanks for the first-reaction video. I don't know when I will get a chance to see it, but even if you said it sucked, I would want to see it anyway.😅
Gonna check it out Sunday on my day off.
I'm excited to see it.
Thats good to hear. Rather this mediocre movie that follows lore than anything absolutelly rubbish
Naw, can't go to the Cinema, have to wait for the DVD release.
Watching this one with the japanese dub should be nice ^^
