13 years of failure learning Tagalog first with conventional lessons then it must be 2,000 hours of storytelling and then this year LingQ that I thought would add something to make the difference. Failure. I have now begged you and your staff and other polyglots what is wrong. I know you probably laugh but I think there is something that polyglots know or do that makes the difference. So what can it be. I can tell you all details for 13 years. I am surrounded by Tagalog and cannot understand talk and I cannot speak.
Steve these two sentences from you will always be the biggest help I had in terms of my language learning „Follow your interest. Find ways to enjoy the process“ I initially started learning Japanese because I wanted to watch anime and read light novels in Japanese and it kept me going for a while. Then I realized how long it would be until I really would be able to do this and that really sucked out all of my motivation. But over the course of my trouble with kanji I discovered my love for calligraphy, or more so習字, and now I feel like the time just melts away when I’m going through a text in LingQ and try to write the kanji I don’t know as neatly as possible on a sheet of paper with a fude pen, sentence after sentence.
Extremely excited for you to add Hindi to LingQ. I was just talking about it to friends that I hoped it would be added soon, because I have several South Asian friends and they'll often talk to each other in Hindi which makes me want to learn. I'll have to add that to my language learning plans in 2024 haha. Originally I was going to focus on learning Arabic (beginner) while also enjoying content in Spanish and Chinese (intermediate), but perhaps I'll take the first few months of the year to learn some basic Hindi then resume my other studies. It'd probably go faster if I focused on one language at a time, but I find I learn best when I follow where my interest leads me.
Happy new year Steve and everybody else. Speaking/understanding Romanian on A2 is my goal for this winter and no big deal when I fail, in any case I learned something! Hindi is very tempting!
Thank you Mr. Kaufmann for sharing the mindset of keeping up with language learning in 2024. I am really impressed by how much you delved into the culture learning by reading the related books. As I am currently learning Korean, I wonder at the time when you were learning Korean, what books did you read to facilitate your understanding of the history and culture of Korea?

Language learning is very fun for me. I have ESP with sound. So I can listen to audios of languages for hours with all my senses dormant (touch, taste, smell, sight) except SOUND. This triggers my brain circuitry to always return, almost like how tobacco companies designed cigarettes so motivation is never a problem for me❤

Finally Hindi is available at LingQ! Personally, it is a happy surprise at the end of 2023. I studied Hindi grammar two years ago and couldn`t go further. I will restart my Hindi study in 2024!
You are such an inspiration to me. I started learning Japanese almost 2 years ago, and everything you say is so relevant. Because language learning can happen in sort of a vacuum unless you're in a classroom, it's easy to think, "I'm the only one who can't remember the grammar," or "Why can't I recall words instantly like other people?" But when I take a conversation class, I see other people, including those who have been studying longer, struggling with the same things, and to hear you say it helps too. I will not give up! I love my language journey -- although I'm coming up on causative passive grammar right now and I think that might do me in, haha.
@@rafacs1.63if you're coming from a very different language like English, I don't think you'll be fluent in Japanese in only 2 years unless you're actively living in Japan and using it every day. I don't mean to dishearten anyone of course, the reality is it's a difficult language but with effort you'll definitely get there eventually. As for me, I'll keep going until I'm proficient

Steve - good to hear that you still have resolutions. Two questions: 1) Do you consider all those books you held up as time AWAY from your language learning? If you’re reading so much about society and culture, that’s time not spent in the language. 2) Do you BUY all those books? Not a believer in library books?
I like buying books but the library is a great and under used resources, just a little less convenient. Can't keep them. I only spend an hour or so on language. I like reading in many languages including English.
Hi Steve and Guys, I´m from Brazil and My question is: How important you consider our writing practice? I´ve learned english and Spanish Alone and I´ve be consumig - Since the final days of 2023 - Contents in french, just because these three languages are derivated from latim, so, i becomes in theory a little bit easier to "catch" so many similarities aming these languages; In the beginning of my study of english I used to writing expressively but as the time passed I stopped. So, I thought really interesting when you mentioned How important is to follow our interests in order to learn a language, I remember that one of the greatest esteps I´ve taken in just one year to improve my listening skills in english was just, in the search bar in youtube I always look for something by writing in english; Example: I could look for "Como posso melhorar as minhas habilidades de escuta a língua francesa?" but as I´m studying french I look for "Comme Je peux améliorer ma habilité de ecouté la langue français?".

Steve! You are so fantastic!! I too had always felt that ENJOYING YOURSELF is the most important element of language-learning, as it naturally helps you continue even in the face of the discouragement that comes with not knowing whether we will "ever be fluent". Thank you so much!! You are fantastic and I look up to you and your work.
You're great! You absolutely confirmed my feelings about language aquisition. As a hyper poliglot I'd like some advice on arabic, since you've struggled with it for quite some time. It really makes no sense for me, even less than Polish (wich is still very far, even with my Russian, Norwegian and German knowledge) Thanks!
OK, so by now I've understand your message: Just Read, Speak and Listen! WhereI struggle the most with is finding good content to listen/read, especially in the complete beginner / a bit advanced learner, as most stuff is complex language and really hard to understand. I really like the Mini Stories on LingQ as they are good for beginners, but you can't learn a language just with them.
I hope by the end of 2024 I am able to have a conversation about almost anything in Portuguese. Right now I'm 2 years in and it's definitely slow right now. Although I'm certainly improving and I know I am, I hope I can read a book by the end. I have read a book already.. I just didn't understand most of it.. so I didn't really enjoy it. Paper book is my next goal!
I'm super excited as an Indian that you're gonna do hindi. That's amazing 😍🤩. My Target language is Chinese (language A) & Spanish (language B) for the year 2024. You're amazing man. You inspire us to learn and explore and create our own environment in that language. My language learning journey is great with you. And yes I also do the same things as you. I just don't speak or learn the language I live it , I feel it & get into the culture. I feel like that is the key , and I think that every polyglot 's desire is to move to that country (where the language they are learning is spoken) and communicate with the NATIVES.
As an Egyptian, I would say that Arabic Fusha is understood in every country but no one use it in daily lives. Egyptian dialect is the most famous one because of the famous dramas and songs so I'd say 75% will understand you perfectly if you use the Egyptian dialect. levantine dialects is also so easy to understand among arabs. I'd say the hardest will be (Algerian, Morocans, Tunisian) because they mix arabic and french. In the end, I don't want you to try to grasp every single dialect cause it will slow you down.
Classical Arabic is the best.. Even the Egyptian dialect is mixed with Turkish words, such as oda, kobri, axakhana, osta, bardo, karakon, tabor, baltaji, tarabiza....
Hi i speak English as good as arabic which is my mother tongue i've spent this year learning russian and my plan is to improve my russian as much as possible so i'll do my best to finish the intermediat2level at lingue which is a wonderful website even though it's lacking the accessibility with us blind learners
I want to learn multiple languages at the same time at least 2 but I couldn’t 😭😭 I hope you help us with more advices to learn multiple languages in 2024
I suggest 1 at a time. If you’re splitting your time on a language then how much are you actually soaking up? Concentrate your focus. Especially if you trying to do similar languages.
@@vincer2147 Agreed - it can be very tempting to try to do more than one language at the same time - I really want to refresh my Italian, it's an itch it's hard not to scratch - but I've decided to spend the time on Japanese and come back to Italian in two years time. Which is the point really - input is king, and every half hour lost to doing another language is *bad*. The problem is getting enough input, every day. And that does not even include the issue of trying to imprint different patterns into the brain at the same time. (and then you have the Duolingo users who "study" five or six or ten languages at the same time - a 100% waste of time, but then again all Duo activity is a waste of time)
I started learning German this year January. I currently reside in Berlin. But to be honest, I have been slow, mostly because I work everyday. I am stuck at A1 level, can barely string words and can’t understand when spoken to. I really hope I can at least make A2 by 2024 and B2 by 2025, cause I’m putting a lot of time and resources into this
you can totally get to b1 or b2 by the end of this year!! i reached b2 in 8 months. i have a few recommendations, two books on LingQ, and two yt channels, my primary resources to fluency. LingQ books: 1. Die Nachbarn. i read it, has an entertaining plot, it has a lot of unknown vocab at the start but 2-3 chapters in youll be used to it and youll be learning at a good rate 2. albert einstein biography. each chapter is really short, two pages long, so you can get a bit of practice a lot of times, there are ~ 32 chapters (so less than 100 pages) and id say 5 chapters in (15 or so pages) youll start getting used to it Now I also have two excellent yt channels that helped me reach this levek 1. Natürlich German. start with her absolute beginner, total beginner, and beginner playlists. she uses comprehensible input so it's tje same idea that steve kaufman supports. just remember yiu wont understand every single word but that's fine 2. Easy german. i still use it now, i recommend it after having tried all the other resources as it's a little more advanced, but itll carry you far the above 4 resources made up a large part of my german learning leading me to b2 in 8 months. viel glück!!!
Hi Steve. Can you address one thing that applies to listening!!. Do you recomend listening stuff always with substitles? For example listening french content with french substitles or do you see any point listening kontent without subs and half off the kontent just pass you because you dont understand but still you get input.
The longer I studied spanish the easier it was to speak because even though I never tried to speak much before, I knew instinctually if it sounded okay, I also had heard certain phrases ad nauseum so those phrases would more readily come to mind instead of thinking of how to build a sentence from the ground up.
You didn't mention that this jigsaw puzzle also has more than 10,000 pieces, and a lot of them will probably change shape (i.e. conjugation or declination)
I wish you all the best in 2024, keep being an inspiration for so many ppl. I suggest that you start giving some research on language learning that supports your words. I know that you've mentioned Krashen many times, still, I feel like we need more support for input-oriented learning that I myself practice on my own and with my English students. I truly believe it's the most effective way to learn, however, there are people who find it too overwhelming and they need more assurance that it really works. Additionally, I wonder how much influence learning grammar really has. I feel like in the beginning it's useless and when you're intermediate it makes a lot of sense.
A comment from a native Arabic speaker I once got, when asking about diacritics: Oh, we don't use them. :D Comment on the word lion (I used saba): Oh, but it is one of many expressions we use for lion. Uh-huh... I'll just stick with my east Asian languages for now :D
I also have a long way to learning two languages I am studying english and franch je suis calme kkk I speak a lot a little franch but I study every day at my home Steve kaufmann is a big exemplo to all the students are studying languages from around world I know that I don't write very well but I am learning like a baby kkk I am on A1 in english. Very good video. So I am already forgetting I'm from Brazil. And thank you very much for video
2 years of Portuguese and I still feel like I haven't learned much. I am just patiently waiting for the day when I understand things like a Brazilian. Or close to it anyway.. of course a Brazilian will always understand better.
If you learned 2 years and don't feel any improvement then it means you did something wrong. Or you just haven't been learning language every day which i consider as a main rule for language learners.
@@АртурБриджес I didn't mean I haven't felt like I haven't improved in 2 years 😂 just throughout the time I've had many times when I felt like i haven't improved. Just this year alone I couldn't read much or respond in Portuguese. Now I write to m friends all the time and can read what they say easily. And just a few months ago I understand nothing of Spoken Portuguese. Now it's becoming easier.. still super difficult.. I've had 2 conversations this month on the phone. The 2nd time I understood a lot more than the 1st and I really didn't study much at all since Thanksgiving. I'm definitely improving. Now I can tell (for my listening comprehension anyway) reading.. idk. It's all just a slow gradual process.
I recently came across a video channel about Esperanto. I have always thought about learning it and I have a book and take that I’ve had for years but sort of forgot about it. I was wondering if Esperanto is one of your languages and what you think about it.
Hi Clarence. Esperanto is among the 10 languages I learned over the years. Compared to other languages it was easy to learn and even master, months instead of years. Recently I discovered AlenaFenomena on Twitch.tv. she speaks and sings in the language. I was surprised that after more than 10 years of not using it, I could still understand her, but even more than that. I could still also produce coherent sentences. This wasn't the case with the other languages like Greek and Turkish that I learned and then forgot. My only problem with Esperanto is that you have to go looking for situations to be able to use and practice it.
Looking forward to Hindi on Lingq and an opportunity to see your journey with that language. For the major part of the 2024 I'm planning to focus on polishing my Italian and German and then I'm planning to start learning Hindi. So I'm already browsing through some materials and I'm happy to see I'll be able to use Lingq 😍
I can’t for the life me understand how it’s possible (because my own experience is so different), but some people really do seem to have pretty good listening skills, but have a lot of difficulty with speaking. It seems to be partly a psychological issue. They get very anxious when trying to speak.
Hey Steve, hope 2024 is a great year for you! Thoughts on showcasing your total words learned/lingqs created/words read on the languages you know best on lingq? I was on lingq the other day trying to see if theres a way to view someones profile or something? But i didnt see an option so i thought maybe that would be a cool video to show before you start your 2024 journey!
Wooow thats great. Im from Persiaaaa, you will improve your persian in 2024, you have to see persian movies, good new is that we don't have different genders but there are lots of slaaaaaangsss آفرین ستیو ادامه بده
Hi teacher. I am grateful for reading the elements of Turkish culture. Turkish history dates back to before the Ottoman Empire. You can experience many different things about our history, geography and traditions. If you want to learn about M. Kemal Atatürk, the most important statesman in recent Turkish history, I recommend you to read the books of the author İlber Ortaylı.
Hi Steve, I hope you’re well. I’ve got a question for you, I am very interested in LingQ so to learn Spanish. The only problem is that Spanish (on lingq) is only available in English. I am French and my English skills are quite limited (b2). Do you you think it might be a good idea to learn a new language using a language I do not master yet ? Thanks a lot
me either i want to start into Hindi, but everything i found is written in their alphabet, i think its difficult, we shoud learn how to at first speak, with that alphabet it's kinda impossible to read at beggining...
Not enough people think of Esperanto when they want to learn a language. With Esperanto you make faster progress and therefore you will not be tempted to give up. Also very useful when you don't have lots of time to spend on language learning. Esperanto is used much more widely than many people assume.
Hi Steve, thanks very much for your videos. One question, I'm stuck what to learn. I started French many years ago and had 1-2-1 lessons, then visited Italy many times so started to learn that, then in covid lockdown I started to learn Spanish. now I don't know what to do, I doubt I'll visit many of these countries again so it's an interest/learning thing for me. I've used LingQ for all three previously. I'm interested in history particularly English monarchs from 1066 (The Normans so French) but also love Italian food (home cooking) and the country. As a beginner could I do both or should I get better with one before starting a 2nd language ? Bit long winded sorry about that. I have lots of time as I'm retired so that's not a problem. Regards and Happy New Year from England.
I think it's better to focus on one and dabble in one other from time to time. stay focussed on one for at least three months at a time. At least that has been my experience.

Happy New Year, Steve
Happy New Year! And thank you for your content.
Hindi coming is pretty exciting!
@Eli_Muwahhid trying, but not fully involved yet. right now pushing with Korean and Russian. Arabic will be the next big challenge
Happy New Year.
I said that already several times. I wish to see my known words on the lingq-widget like in the early times to stay motivated 😅
Could you share how you’re learning Chinese?
@@artyoga_fysmI'm learning it from Duolingo
💪💪💪maestro ,happy new year
My 1st New Year resolution is to learn how to say "Thank you" in about 75 languages, so that I will know how to say it in 100 languages in total.
Come on get to that 1 mill
Hi i speak English as good as arabic which is my mother tongue i've spent this year learning russian and my plan is to improve my russian as much as possible so i'll do my best to finish the intermediat2level at lingue which is a wonderful website even though it's lacking the accessibility with us blind learners
3:41 can you advice a similar book about czech culture? Thank you very much
Not a book but check this out. dvojka.rozhlas.cz/toulky-ceskou-minulosti-vsechny-dily
I want to learn multiple languages at the same time at least 2 but I couldn’t 😭😭 I hope you help us with more advices to learn multiple languages in 2024
You don't need advices, you need to spend your time and effort

A very Happy New Year to you and everyone.
In 2024, I hope you will reach 1million subs!
I started learning German this year January. I currently reside in Berlin. But to be honest, I have been slow, mostly because I work everyday. I am stuck at A1 level, can barely string words and can’t understand when spoken to. I really hope I can at least make A2 by 2024 and B2 by 2025, cause I’m putting a lot of time and resources into this
If u work in Berlin wouldn’t you have to speak German?
you can totally get to b1 or b2 by the end of this year!! i reached b2 in 8 months. i have a few recommendations, two books on LingQ, and two yt channels, my primary resources to fluency.
LingQ books:
1. Die Nachbarn. i read it, has an entertaining plot, it has a lot of unknown vocab at the start but 2-3 chapters in youll be used to it and youll be learning at a good rate
2. albert einstein biography. each chapter is really short, two pages long, so you can get a bit of practice a lot of times, there are ~ 32 chapters (so less than 100 pages) and id say 5 chapters in (15 or so pages) youll start getting used to it
Now I also have two excellent yt channels that helped me reach this levek
1. Natürlich German. start with her absolute beginner, total beginner, and beginner playlists. she uses comprehensible input so it's tje same idea that steve kaufman supports. just remember yiu wont understand every single word but that's fine
2. Easy german. i still use it now, i recommend it after having tried all the other resources as it's a little more advanced, but itll carry you far
the above 4 resources made up a large part of my german learning leading me to b2 in 8 months.
viel glück!!!

Steve, could you comment on Eisel Mazard's advice regarding language learning???
I am struggling and managing to master english one thing. Haha you have a plan to study many languages. Amazing... i am not study person😢😢😢
You didn't mention that this jigsaw puzzle also has more than 10,000 pieces, and a lot of them will probably change shape (i.e. conjugation or declination)
Thanks Steve! I enjoyed the video and I appreciate the encouragement to press on.
Do you think it is possible to reach advanced level French in 2 years?
Yes
Happy New Year, Steve! Million thanks for being a great teacher and inspiration for all of us! Greetings from Indonesia!
Happy new year 😍
Happy New year! I Was looking for learning english . Its so fascinating . Thank you for this vídeo! I am Brazilian❤
Uh-huh... I'll just stick with my east Asian languages for now :D
happy new year steve
Idol🎉
Thx man
Congratulations on reaching the milestone of 1 million subscribers!
Are there any plans to add Irish or Scottish Gaelic to LingQ?
If we get the mini stories translated and recorded.
I haven't learned Esperanto and probably won't but it is available at LingQ.
My hopes are that you will do more videos or Russian. I have been studying for 1.5 years, and though I have come far, there is still much to learn.
Wooow thats great. Im from Persiaaaa, you will improve your persian in 2024, you have to see persian movies, good new is that we don't have different genders but there are lots of slaaaaaangsss

i'm egyptian and a huge fan of your efforts and mindset :D
I'm planning to find out application for language learning like LingQ, because unfortunately LingQ isn't working in Russia.
Ich wünsche Ihnen alles gute und schönes neues Jahre für 2024❤und gesund bleiben . Johnny
Finally Hindi!!
You can set your interface language to French or something else, I prefer my first language as interface language.
in 2024, I will start learning Spanish
Lingq doesn't work properly on android anymore. Does anyone has the same problem? Thanks.
me either i want to start into Hindi, but everything i found is written in their alphabet, i think its difficult, we shoud learn how to at first speak, with that alphabet it's kinda impossible to read at beggining...
I’m surprised you’re learning Hindi since it’s not on LingQ. Does this mean it may be coming this year? Or are you going to use different tools?
5:10 should be coming this January
