These boats are great design and probably Dutch in origin. By the look of them they are bottom draggers, most likely scallops and flatfish. All well and good, but this type of fishing destroys the sea bottom habitat of many other sea creatures which the fish we like to eat rely on. In my view this type of fishing should be phased out. If you want to eat scallops, go for the hand dived ones which are always available if you look hard enough. As for flat fish, that's a more difficult dilemma but perhaps line - caught is a solution. I don't know, but I do know unregulated scouring of the sea bed causes untold damage, maybe not in our generation, but in the future. End of rant, time for fish & chips!

La Barone The sea bed around the south west were these boats beam trawl is very hard ground and would tear most other trawls to bits, I used to work on these boats many years ago & the under side of the trawls have to be heavily reinforced and maintained at the end of each trip. As for scallop dredging yes they do cause damage I cant argue that point. Yes most Brixham beamers are ex Dutch or Belgium built vessels and will withstand the worst weather you can imagine for the size of them.
