Absolutely right, I am owning a KIA EV6 since May and tried BMW (had a very good 530 once) and Mercedes EQE (had also a few car of that brand in my life, when they where really German quality). Now they are just disappointing and far too expensive for their value for money. all three e-GMP cars are excellent. I love my EV6. The ioniq 5 and GV60 are also great cars. blazing fast charging, great performance, great interior space, fun to look at and drive. I'm not surprised to see this car winning EV of the year, at all. and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Ioniq 6 in the running for the same aware next year, though I doubt they'd give it to Hyundai two years in a row on principle. you can just tell that the reviewer and staff are having fun with the car. EVs just put smiles on people's faces, and the e-GMP cars especially. everyone who sees and drives my EV6 are almost magically converted within minutes. it's not going to be 120k EV sedans that are going to do it, it's these types of cars. every day crossovers that you drive the kids to school in, and to the beach on the weekend. Kia/Hyundai are quite savvy, they know this, and they really nailed these cars. they have quirks. Ioniq 5 should have a rear wiper. there are quirks. but none of them deal breakers and the overall car and execution is so good that they will sell tons of them, as many as they can make tax credit or not. wait until the ioniq 6 and 7 are released, those will be amazing cars too. I agree fully with this choice for EV car of the year. At present the ionic 6 should win the EV car of the year next year because it’s even better than the ionic 5. Hyundai is killing it. They and Kia always had great prices With lots of features included for free and a great warranty… and for at least the past 10 years they’ve had high quality manufacturing. Now they also have beautiful design and they are unstoppable. The ionic 6 is my favorite car design of the past 20 years. My last two cars have been Kia‘s and my previous two cars before that were both Hyundai‘s. I was super happy with all four of them. No major repairs were needed and almost 0 minor repairs were needed. They rode nicely, they had lots of safety features including lots of airbags, they had nice stereos and they had cruise control when that was not common. You get a ton of stuff with the standard models and most people have no need of upgrading higher. By contrast, almost no one is satisfied with a standard Tesla model and have to spend lots of money to upgrade… So much so that sometimes Tesla just eliminates the base or standard model and charges a ton of money. And a sizable number of things break or stop working. My sister has had a model X for 2 1/2 years and the passenger side window won’t go up and down. That is like the few people I know who drive 15 year old rust bucket junkers that they bought for $800… and is just pathetic for a vehicle that costs $90,000.
We’ve own an Ioniq 5 since February. It’s exterior styling wasn’t really that compelling a factor in our purchase decision. Mostly we like the interior comfort. The I5 efficiency is substantially better at 65 mph. Our overall efficiency after 5,500 miles is 4.4 miles/kWh.
Yes. Drive these cars the way they’re intended and they are very efficient. Most people claim they can’t get their quotes range. Then they turn around and run them at 75 - 80mph. Stick to 60-65 and it’s very possible. At a 62mph cruise, I get an astonishing 235 wh/miles in my Model Y which with its 82kWh battery (~ 75 usable) that’ll easily get over 300 miles per charge.
We have Kia Niro EV (over 10,000 miles), and I consistently get 4 miles per kWh (up to 70 mph) which means $3.89 per every 100 miles. I have been happy with the efficiency. I have been watching Ioniq 5, and it seemed less efficient than Kona or Niro. I am sure a lot has to do with how you drive but 4.4 miles per kWh is excellent!
It's pretty difficult to disagree with this decision...the Ioniq 5 is a pretty impressive vehicle. Was also named the "World Car of the Year - 2022" back in April. Hyundai / Kia / Genesis are putting out some IMPRESSIVE stuff now..
I never cared much about ionic 5 until I noticed one parked in front of a store. This one is not a small hatchback as it appears in videos, but definitely big small SUV stuff. Now when I learn more about the range and the fast charging and rightly priced I am more curious.
Was worried test driving this coming from a Tesla Model 3 - but it did not disappoint. Although if speed of TM3 is 10, this felt like a 9.1. And smoothness of the ride was 👌. I also test drove many other vehicles. This had the best and most lasting emotional response. Driving is a feel. And this has it in spades.
The Ioniq is probably the most consumer base significant of all the EV options right now. Reasonably priced. Good (but not stupid) performance, and looks damn good. I hope it does well, because the other manufacturers need to figure out that there's a market for an EV that sits at the average ICE vehicle capability level that's reasonably priced. And they can actually look BETTER than their ICE counterparts and don't have to be one of those ugly, squatty wedge-box things...
Some friends of ours own electric cars, but they still rent gas cars to travel anywhere over 200 miles because of the troubles associated with electric cars and trucks
The cheapest base model I can find in my state is around $47K for RWD and not just above $40K. AWD which is recommended for driving in the Midwest is from $51K onwards. I wish this was more affordable. :(
Thanks for the great review. I have my Ionic 5 pre-ordered for Q1 2023 . The new prices here in Western Europe are pretty expensive, the Premium Plus AWD is the cheapest version with the Vehicle-to-load adapters and that costs the equivalent of $62,500 and that’s after the Green Energy Grant is deducted from the actual price. I ended up buying the “cheaper “ version at $58,000 after the grant, that’s a lot more than I have ever paid for a similar sized ICE, but will also save about $6,000 a year on fossil fuel and servicing. So total cost of ownership will be less after year four compared to my current Ford gas guzzler, plus I won’t be polluting the planet. Saving money and saving the planet sounds great to me and will compliment my existing solar panels.
4.5 0-60 is Mustang GT fast. It's crazy that we "meh" that, these days. Make an EV that's cheaper and takes 7 seconds, and it will be a top seller. Mast people don't need that level of acceleration.
It is the battery that cost the most in an EV, not the motor. In order to lower the price, they have to lower the battery count, meaning lower range. People don’t want lower range like 150 miles.
all the ignorant snobs will still turn their noses up at it cuz "its a hyundai" but at this point Kia/Hyndai/Genesis are giving even the german brands a run for their money. They're eating everybody's lunch, and they deserve it!
Bought mine in February. Has been brought back to the dealership 2 times for warranty issues. 3 of the 6 months of ownership, my ioniq 5 was stuck at the dealership due to replacement parts being on back order or the service depts not having enough data on how to repair them faster. I feel Hyundai engineers need to provide better support to their service depts when it comes to troubleshooting. Also, Hyundai’s corporate customer assistance dept have not been much help while the car was stuck in service. Despite all the issues, i really like the ioniq 5 when I am able to drive it. Hyundai hit a home run with the styling. I agree with a lot of features this video outlines about the car. Unfortunately, my overall experience with Hyundai has been disappointing.
As long as EVs can’t get to that 425 mile range yet, manufacturers really gotta offer a way to charge the vehicle from the inside (trunk area maybe) with a portable electric power station. Being able to safely charge a parked EV after you arrive to your destination during a road trip would be a game changer.
I don't like the design in person at all tbh, and that's super important. Also from what I remember, the underside, panels, suspension, etc, are not aluminum. That hugely improves the longevity and performance of your car.. i never have to worry about rust, except for bolts and some parts, but not the main stuff.
I'm a Model Y owner, but the Ioniq 5 is probably my current favorite. I'll probably keep the Tesla until the broader charging infrastructure catches up to Tesla's.
I’ve managed to bring my 77kwh AWD model up to 450 km range 16.3kwh/100km. This could probably improve by 10-15km So extending your range is possible. 1) always brake with paddles 2) regen is set to soft deceleration and auto mode simultaneously 3) minimal acceleration in eco mode and switch to cruise as soon as you can. 4) maximum distance between preceding vehicle 5) stay under 110kmh or 5km above limit. 6) range is calculated over the last 30 outings so if you have one single agressive (because it’s fun) outing, it will throw off your range for another 29 sorties.
@@GudieveNing Both are very nice. I just looked to revview the EV6. It has a better looking dash. The Cadillac Lyriq is even better but too expensive. Enjoy whichever you decide.
Where I live I have seen more of the KIA EV6, sister car to the Ioniq. Yesterday while travelling I finally met an Ioniq 5 owner at a charging station in Oklahoma. He uses his Hyundai every day for business. Even though he lives out in the country he said charging isn't a problem. He is planning some long family trips in the car. Yes, full power 350kW charging is still less than reliable. That isn't really a problem. EVs with 8-900v batteries will hold a high charging rate for much longer than 400v batteries. When travelling and charging to 80% or more this makes a big difference.
Ya, but I don’t do a “fuel and potty break” every time I fill up my car. Actually I almost NEVER do that. So in the real world 18 minutes to only fill up to 80% is hugely longer and inferior to filling up a fuel tank to full in 3-4 minutes.
Your convenience on long drives is less important than reducing the multiple worsening harms caused by global warming caused in part by filling up your gasser.
I have only had my Tesla for a month. The charging is really not that big of a deal and you actually look forward to it. You have to also realize there’s a bigger picture here, no more fossil fuel use. It’s a great feeling.
And soon they will become a collectible since the feds removed the $7500 ev subsidy for cars not made in the US. they'll eventually make it in Georgia or Alabama but conversion of IC factories will take time.
Curious to know the colour of the model shown in the video. I ordered an Ioniq 5 and couldn’t decide on whether to purchase the white or cyber grey. I ended up settling for the grey. Have to admit the one in the video looks pretty sleek.
I test drove the Ioniq 5. It was great but 2 things drove me mental about it. No rear wiper in Canada during snow is a no go. And, the tonneau cover doesn't line up with the top of the rear seats. As a result, it restricts what you can fit in the trunk massively. This drove me even more mental. (And Hyundai, offer a dark grey trim to replace that 1980s silver look. And bolder colours!)
We have snow also in Switzerland and this silly rear wipers just don’t the job neither but clean your camera and back window and of course the roof that many forget and endanger others and all menmade silly arguments are gone. We tested the first IONIQ 5 but bought an EV6 AWD in May also without a stubborn wipers in the back but a very good working camera.
At a highway limit in European value of 120 km/h and high mountain roads we drive our EV6 AWD since May with 14,8 to 16,8 kWh on 100 km. 15,7 kWh is the overall average on our more than 4000 km driven. We already reached the 240 kWh peak and had a high charge rate longer than the also 800 volts Porsche Taycan. That is for us then really impressive at the price of 68‘000 CHF because a Taycan with all the packs we have included gets up easily to over 200‘000 CHF and we do not need anymore to impress people at the Golf Club.
@6:41 to use the paddles just for Regen seems like a waste, maybe they could've mimicked gears like Dodge is trying to do with there new EV instead. Hopefully software can update to change its purpose
Anyone who puts the white alloys from the Lancia Delta HF Integrale rally car on the Ioniq 5 gets total respect. Maybe the Martini Rossi racing stripes too. Its geometric bits remind me of 1980s-90s Citroëns; there's probably some homage to be made to some obscure French space-age hatchback. A rectangular steering wheel and a Grace Jones video!
Charging is still one thing that Tesla clearly still has an advantage over the Ioniq 5 or any of the rest of the competition. While the Hyundai Ioniq 5 can charge in 18 minutes, it also assumes you're going to find a working 350 kW third-party station and that it's not going to glitch out, stop charging midway through, or require a call to customer service. All the time you spend looking for a working charger or talking to customer service is time spent not charging. That 18 minutes could very easily double. This is why charger reliability is so important. It's the gigantic elephant in the room that so many auto journalists don't give enough weight to. Conveniently placed chargers, high charger reliability, and well integrated route planning means you're likely going to spend far less time charging or looking for a charger in a Tesla than you would in an Ioniq 5.
Go watch Aging Wheels. He and his RUclips pal went from Chicago to Florida with no charging problems. I live in a tiny town in Northern Wisconsin and there is a charger. A problem, yes? But it is getting better quickly.
The delight of the E-GMP platform if you cannot find a 350KW charger find a 150KW as many users have found that this can extract up too 175KW because of its high voltage and charge 10-80 % in 23 - 25 minutes. way to go Hyundai as we have lots of these 150KW chargers in Canada, not so many 350KW.
Have had mine since February in Colorado. Actually the day I bought it, we received 7+ inches of snow accumulation on the roads. This is my first EV, and I had no idea how anything worked, and drove it home without any issue. I have the Limited AWD version, and didn't know how to put it in SNOW mode, so I drove home in ECO and again had no issue. I think iPedal is actually a risky mode in slick conditions because the regen is aggressive. You cannot use iPedal if using SNOW mode. The only "complaint" is fast charging speeds during cold days. Its not super fast. Still faster than home charging by a lot. The majority of EA chargers in Colorado deliver "max" 150kWh, we only have two stations with 350kWh stations right now. During the winter, I saw on avg 88-115kwh. During the summer, I see 135 low and 175 max (even though its rated at 150). The charging alone is reason to purchase this over any other platform, especially at this price point. And has made me overcome my range anxiety!
@Ian X I certainly don't think it's that bad. Far from awful/terrible imo but fantastic?? Who tf comes up with that metric lol. Aston's look fantastic. This looks like a VW product met into a chisel

Maybe a Home run in Your Eyes....But in My eyes, The Lyrik looks 1000% better..............Paul
@@paulholterhaus7084 The Lyriq is in a completely different price point.
@@paulholterhaus7084 You have difficulty understanding apples to apples comparison. 🤦🏻♂️🙄
Finally a 'realistic' & honest summary...Should ask Hyundai for a refund.
What were the issues Dale?
As long as EVs can’t get to that 425 mile range yet, manufacturers really gotta offer a way to charge the vehicle from the inside (trunk area maybe) with a portable electric power station. Being able to safely charge a parked EV after you arrive to your destination during a road trip would be a game changer.
omg, just get a gas car...
nice exterior
I placed an order for the Model Y performance, after owning a Tesla model 3. I am seriously considering this vehicle
I'll probably keep the Tesla until the broader charging infrastructure catches up to Tesla's.
the design is awesome, this will be my next car.
whenever I see one i just can;t keep my eyes off of it.
will be interesting to see the N being tested to see how it compares
Dealer charge $6000 more for this. Now without $7500 ev credit, I am wondering how many buyers willing to pay for this
EV of the year, but it doesn't even have a rear wiper!
The one thing I would change is the plain, flat, dash screens.
Agreed. EV6 interior is way more futuristic and bezel free. Centre console is nicer too. I’m trying to decide between IONIQ 5 and EV6.
@@GudieveNing Both are very nice. I just looked to revview the EV6. It has a better looking dash. The Cadillac Lyriq is even better but too expensive. Enjoy whichever you decide.
Really waiting to have mine... Ordered in feb.2022, been told lately gonna be delivered in 2024-2025... Prefered-Long Range-Ultimate...
Why would you use a weighting for car noise? It discounts everything below 1 kHz.
Enjoyed the content. Please consider changing the action style background music and improve the lighting.
How much does one of those batteries cost to replace?
I’m in love of the looks of the Ioniq 5!
Since the colours are all boring, I'll take mine in white and add Martini & Rossi stripes!
Love the looks of it. Seeing them around Northern VA a lot lately.
ayyy nova gang
And soon they will become a collectible since the feds removed the $7500 ev subsidy for cars not made in the US. they'll eventually make it in Georgia or Alabama but conversion of IC factories will take time.
What color is on this?
Curious to know the colour of the model shown in the video. I ordered an Ioniq 5 and couldn’t decide on whether to purchase the white or cyber grey. I ended up settling for the grey. Have to admit the one in the video looks pretty sleek.
Kudos to the designers and to Hyundai for letting them get away with it.
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is supposed to be even better coming next year!!
What is a mustang Mach1? at minute 5:00
That center armrest moves back for road head
I test drove the Ioniq 5. It was great but 2 things drove me mental about it. No rear wiper in Canada during snow is a no go. And, the tonneau cover doesn't line up with the top of the rear seats. As a result, it restricts what you can fit in the trunk massively. This drove me even more mental. (And Hyundai, offer a dark grey trim to replace that 1980s silver look. And bolder colours!)
Rear model wipers will be added in upcoming models
We have snow also in Switzerland and this silly rear wipers just don’t the job neither but clean your camera and back window and of course the roof that many forget and endanger others and all menmade silly arguments are gone. We tested the first IONIQ 5 but bought an EV6 AWD in May also without a stubborn wipers in the back but a very good working camera.
How much it cost to replace battery?
Just that price tag that kept us from taking the leap.
Now the "inflation reduction act" will remove federal subsidies for this car making it more unaffordable
Can’t wait until they make the 3 row suv sized EVs
Love ours! 240-260 miles range is ez. Use it to power 2 house circuits when not driving it.
Does it have V2X?
Congrats to HYUNDAI. Anyway when can I get my order delivered? Almost 2 years' wait....
not 2 years wait. Tesla's have the longest wait. Up to 8 months. They can't make them as fast as these oem companies can.
@@chrisfriends7911 Probably outside the US.
@6:41 to use the paddles just for Regen seems like a waste, maybe they could've mimicked gears like Dodge is trying to do with there new EV instead. Hopefully software can update to change its purpose
Holden Camira Made the list too
👍👍👍
Hoping the Ionic5 will one day offer a variant with a bigger trunk. Wagon version?
I think itll look so sick with a set of OZ racing rally wheels
Agreed
Trying to find those in 18inch for my winter tyres
@@steinandersen6648 please take a photo if you do !
But it is getting better quickly.
ioniq 5 N launching sooooon!!
So cool. Sadly. No way I can afford this on a caregiver's pay.
When did Carlos start working for Car and Driver???
4:20 Are you kidding me? In 18min I am 20miles away including 1min gas pump!!!
As mentioned in the video, I'd be interested to see how this performs in the winter with snow.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🚙👌🏻
18 mins ? At a gas station? 😳
I can't fathom how people say this car "looks fantastic"
It looks terrible, imo.
@Ian X I certainly don't think it's that bad. Far from awful/terrible imo but fantastic?? Who tf comes up with that metric lol. Aston's look fantastic. This looks like a VW product met into a chisel
Only issue is they want the same money as a brand new car for replacing the battery if you go over a speed bump
DELOREAN 😍😍😍
At the 3:00 mark, did you mean to say 6 banana boxes and 20 banana boxes? Always Banana Counting -TB
What is the name of music of 1:38???
Shame about the tax credit.......also, make a cheaper version like vw did with the ID.4.
Until charging network is as large and reliable as Tesla supercharger network, I will stick with model 3.
Wait, sorry this is unrelated to the video, but is that what Ezra Dyer looks like?
And just wait for the Ioniq 6.
I like the car quite a bit, but I'm more interested in seeing how these age.
Hyundai needs to go EV with their ICE oil burning problems after a couple years of ownership. Hopefully their EVs are built better
Is it worth the extra $12gs over the Chevy bolt euv?
Try buying one at MSRP or less.
