Neon Genesis Evangelion as an 80s Sci Fi/Horror Movie

- "Genesis of a New Gospel" was the working title of the supposed science-fiction film that was - with major intervals due to production issues - produced from 1968 to 1989, although never released for general audiences, due to problems with the complex, and controversial, plot (which contained explicit sexual and christian overtones) and visual practicability of the special effects. Additionally, this long, and uncertain production forced the cast to change often, which slowed the production down even further, as large portions of the movie had to be remade. Here, I will show a collection of production imagery from 1969 to 1989, in no perticular order. While very little is known about the exact plot and production history of this obscure, yet costly movie, some things are certain:
From the beginning in 1968, Peter Cushing was supposed to play the part of an important character, a certain "Fuyutsuki". Around 1980, after the success of Alien, Sigourney Weaver was offered and had accepted the role of "Mayor Katsuragi" - the supposed female protagonist (at that point in the production). Despite the turbulent history of the movie, there actually was one constant: Mickey Rooney was willing, to the bitter end, to play the antagonist, the shadowy "Keel Lorenz", about whom barely anything is known. The Movie mostly made use of live-action sequences, however animation, animatronics and even claymation were used too.
The Plot apparently told a coming-of-age story of one "third child", a child soldier forced by his tyrannical father to pilot a biomechanical warmachine called an "Eva" to fight angels. The story was supposed to deal with the puberty of said "third child" and had a great focus on his psyche. The rest of the story is barely reconstructable, although at the very end, there was some form of "Third Impact".
If anyone in the comments knows what's up, bring it on.

The angel that is shaped like a diamond. Gives me a feeling of the crystals from Final Fantasy.
Definitely directed by Stanley Kubrick
My best guess was that he would be the driving force behind the initial idea, but later Carpenter and even Hanson were involved too in some way.
Evangelion gives me more David Lynch vibes.
Hahha thats a good one
Before Mr. Kubrick passed on long ago
@@erdachtzumuntergang Very amazing 🤩 style❗️💖
Misato looks like Sigourney Weaver
If she was younger today she would have been PERFECT.
Fuyutsuki look like Peter Cushing
Na, she was too thin.
@@KENSHIROez3260 which makes too much sense
Rei II looks like she could easily be concept art for Jodorowsky's Dune that also never got off the ground, really awesome to see this.
Ive been using RUclips since 2006 and I don’t think I’ve had a video description actually entertain me as much as that did. Good job!
Thank you, means a lot to me.
The music really sets the horror tone along with the images
It's insane how artistic and atmospheric some of these are
Unfortunately from feeding the AI thousands of artworks from talented artists who had no consent in the matter.
@@NeoNovastar you had me at no consent -shinji
@@shacka95 You're so fucked up. 😏
@@NeoNovastar well, it's may be unethical, but this kind of use falls under the category of fair use.
And if artists donated their work, is there would be any difference ?
This just make it slower, but ai art would be appear anyway, i as an artist think: it's part of progress, slowing it down may be unethical as well.
@@localweeb2924 indeed
Sigourney Weaver as Misato is making me feel things. Definitely a vibe.
This really look like it was made by Stanley Kubrick with the collab with Ridley Scott and John Carpenter and I love how Fuyutsuki look like Peter Cushing and one of the SEELE member look like Ian McDiarmid
0:04 Neon Genesis Robocop
This is almost terrifying as, if I remember right or if it was true or not, Robin Williams in a Evangelion Live Action movie. I heard this from somewhere, but I can't remember where at the moment.
He played the protagonist in the movie "One Hour Photo", which references Evangelion in one short scene. In the Scene, however, a Mass-Produced-Eva Action Figure, is described as "A hero fighting aliens with his sword."
It is said that he was an Evangelion Fan and would've been interested in taking part in an Evangelion Movie. (Which apparently also was a supposed thing in the early 2000s).
@@erdachtzumuntergang that and the figure of the Mass Production Eva came from his personal collection. the question would be who Williams would have played on scree? he didn't have the facial construction to play Gendo, maybe a member of SEELE?
@@ronnieman87 I could see maybe him Having a cameo of some sort like as the teacher of Shinji's class maybe
Ritsuko here reminds me a lot of Dr. Beverly Crusher from Star Trek TNG. It would be cool as hell to see Eva in that style
Crazy how insanely good that thumbnail one is, that AI was cooking 😂
Molly Ringwald as Asuka, huh..
If I could experience something for the first time again it would be Evangelion, this looks like it would be great.
Gendo but it's Gordon Freeman.
Fuyutsuki but it's Grand Moff Tarkin.
In my defense, Fuyutsuki already was Grand Moff Tarkin; or rather, he already was an anime rendition of Peter Cushing.
Looks really good! It would be nice if someone made this into a movie.
If the movie was faithful as well as innovative; i would be there opening night, she'll out money for repeats, and preorder the DVD.
I always thought that Peter Cushing in New Hope looked a lot like Fuyutsuki in NGE. Hell maybe he inspired them a little.
Is Gendo at 0:12 giving anyone else Harold-Ramis-as-Egon vibes?
Well, yes, but it just kinda happened. I embraced it and included a dedicated "Harold Ramis as Gendo"-Image in the second part.
@@erdachtzumuntergang Huh. Welllll, this is all my brain is gonna wanna think about for the next few minutes. Hang on, lemme try something...
---
Naoko Akagi: You're so kind to be taking care of that little girl. You're a real humanitarian.
Gendo: (Walking ahead of her, not breaking his stride) The child isn't human.
---
Naoko Akagi: Do you want some juice?
Rei I: (To Gendo) Do I?
Gendo: (Not looking up) Yes, have some.
Rei I: Yes, have some. Old hag.
---
Rei II: As near as I can tell, Arael made telepathic contact with the second child.
(Gendo turns to look at down at the comatose Asuka in a hospital bed.)
Gendo: I'll need a sample of her brain tissue.
---
(Shinji is in a nursery, petting an Akita puppy. He's calm but his eyes are red as if he'd been crying.)
(The camera pans out, revealing that Gendo is watching this through two-way glass, the light from the window reflected on his spectacles.)
Gendo: Let's see what happens when we take away the puppy.
---
Gendo: SEELE has decided that society is too sick to survive. They've been conducting rituals since the arrival of ADAM; bizarre rituals intended to bring about the end of the world, and now it looks like it may actually happen.
..... Fuck me, I started this as a joke but switching all of these from comedy mode to serious works perfectly. Raimis would've made a great Gendo.
0:19 is definitely Peter Cushing. Maybe his Rogue One substitute Guy Henry.
Evangelion: You Can (Not) Unsee
0:49 seems like AI pasted Shinji over one of Jakub Różalski's paintings, it has very strong resemblance to his 1920+ series
Kozo Fuyutsuki and Ristuko look stunning
0:20 Eva 01 looks like Eva's 00 and O2 from the 1993 NGE proposal documents.
Man fuyutsukj at 0:19 is kinda a baddie ngl. My mans old as fuck but still retained his twinkness
0:13 kind of looks like an older Egon Spengler mixed with someone else
You are not the first one to notice that, so I just embraced it. You can find a rendition of Harold Ramis as Gendo in the second part: ruclips.net/video/_EiH3yuYLhU/видео.html
@@erdachtzumuntergang Nice! As a huge Harold Ramis fan I appreciate this lol
0:15 With Harold Ramis as Gendo Ikari
Not really feeling this one too much, but I do like the other-worldly atmosphere in:
0:28
0:49
0:57
It's pretty much like throwing Shinji in one of infinite scenarios where it requires him to enter a robot to fight something horrendous that plagues humanity.
But my favorite probably has to be this one of Ritsuko:
0:53
But it doesn't feel like the 80's, it's more like deep rooted into 70's Sci-fi.
I actually agree with you there. The image of Ritsuko might just be my favourite of this set of images too.
I would've watched that back in the 80's
Now I wonder how would "GenoCyber" look in this style...
Man, love the ones that look like movie posters
Apart from Asuka, all characters have strong oriental traits.
I didn't understand why they became western all of a sudden.
Because I thought that this hypothetical movie would be made in the usa sometime between 1969 and 1989.
That being said, your criticism is entirely valid, but I had a different approach to this. It's not really supposed to be "Evangelion as an 80s sci-fi/horror movie" (admittedly, the title is clickbait) as it is "Production Art and unfinished imagery from some wierd, unreleased movie-project that follows the story and imagery of NGE from 1969 to 1989". In a way, it's more of a "what-if" scenario. Again, would I have done "Evangelion as an 80s Movie" and just that, you indeed are correct and it wouldn't make any sense.
the datasets on which all these AI programs are based are extremely biased since they're mostly fed with anglo/eurocentric data. that's why any of these 80's films re imaginings always make everyone look like white people
It takes place in Japan and you have either japanese, Europeans and american sometimes mixed races
@@CUBETechie I mean, if we go that route the original show was very open to interpretation. Fuyutsuki and Ritsuko at least looked quite western.
This is an anime adaptation. In anime, the characters often look European, but their behavior and "soul" is Japanese through and through. At least that's how it used to be, because developers from Japan wanted to conquer Western markets. And Evangelion is a revolutionary example of this. You know E-V-A-N-G-E-L-I-O-N, a cinematographic work having its origins in strictly European (Judeo-Christian) civilization. That's why the Western world has been drawn to anime.
If such a movie were directed in Japan, probably all the characters would be played by Japanese actors. If such a movie had been directed in the USA (in the 1980s) probably all the characters would have been played by American "white" actors.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
AI art still freaks me out so the like is purely for your descriptions of the canceled project which were absolutely fantastic.
Now i genuinely want this, it looks great!
There is no possible way to make a live action film of Evangelion
Maybe as a Live Action TV Series on HBO.
I mean, Gainax at one point around 2010 had already sold the licenses to Evangelion for an american, life-action Evangelion Movie. The Production Art for it can be found online. Looks interesting, but wouldn't have done the source material justice.
In one universe, it was created by Airi Komiyama who also is the executive producer and played Misato Katsuragi.
It ran for three seasons and it was a huge success.
Nearly 70 years of tokusatsu, including those that inspired Anno, say, "Who are you to judge?"
directed by David Lynch
This would be the most intense movie
I want to see Evangelion and GitS 1995 as Tarkovsky film
I'm not too aware of his larger work. I liked "Stalker" a lot, but besides that I only watched "Solaris", which I personally did not like, despite being aware of it's cinematic quality and understanding why it is concidered to be very good.
misato looks like Sigourney weaver lmfao
This actually looks horrifying
1:14 Hey that looks more like a 'realistic' FFVI poster than something from EVA.
Possible, was not intended. Tbh. I do not even know anything about Final Fantasy except that it is named like that because to studio would've gone banceupt had the first part flopped.
Whatever my opinion is worth, I approve
Thank you.
Lillith is very interesting
Amazing!
it’s the best of the best
1:23 best girl ramiel
Finally something interesting from this trend
Thanks, I appreciate it. However, it is very inconsistent, so the title is kinda clickbaity.
lots of styles here. most notable are Oshii, and Shinkawa
Great stuff
Hollywood live action version dhould be like this. Directed by Guillermo Del Toro.
The EVA 01 design looks way too modern, heck, it looks like Samus or a Spartan armor. lol
became genuinely scared by this 😱
Mickey Rooney lol - worth it
So cool.
Man this would literally be the sickest shit of all time.
It looks like paintings by Salvador Dali
Some, but not all, are indeed very abstract. I would've done this in a better way, if I didn't have to use the free version of Midjourney and thusly burned through 9 discord acounts. One day, when they add a better payment system, I'll come back to this.

Yeah, admittedly the title is clickbait to jump the bandwagon on a trend, the actual idea behins this video can be found in the description. I'm glad that you liked the video, but also I'm sorry for being misleading.

It looks goofy af 💀
If the original creator of this ark I'd let us know if it's not a i generated then I would give you a like. On principle I do not give likes to anyone who uses ai
I mean, you do you and I respect your principle, but it is said in the description that this was made with Midjourney AI. You kinda make it sound like I'm claiming that I created any of this on my own (which I didn't). Actually, I'd even ssy that the little bit of Lore in the description is the only original thing in the whole video.
Noooo
No thanks
God AI art work is so boring and uninspired
I actually agree, bizarrely enough. This here isn't exactly what I want this channel to be known for. Truth be told, this whole fad, while interesting, is not even where AI Art can shine. To me, it's greatest merit is in creating concept art or illustrations for more inspired, hand-crafted art.
@@erdachtzumuntergang this is the way, these designs themselves suck but the first stage to mapping out good design is sucking so it can be an incredible first step. The issue is people stop there and then slap their name on it lol
Keep doing you these concepts are really cool even if what the AI spits out isn’t spot on, the vibe you’re aiming for comes thru
@@matthall7359 You are entirely correct, and I appreciate your kind words. However, I fear that (due to my unclear way of phrasing it) there is a misunderstanding/I didn't get my point across very well.
Thing is, I like to write (In german, my native language, so hopefully my stilted english is not representative of the quality of my literary works). Yet, I couldn't draw in an acceptable manner or quality if my life depended on it. Regarding my inability at creating visual art, Midjourney is a very useful tool for me. While it's images rarely are what I had imagined, they still serve well as illustrations or concept art for my stories.
Not to say that you are wrong, though. I would not go on to claim the images in these videos were made by me, for the only original, or at least truely inspired, parts of these videos are the pieces of fictional lore in the description, and even they could be construed as overglorified fanfiction.
Seriously, this concept is quite convincing. I can imagine that Sigourney Weaver was the last Misato before the project was cancelled (Her hand should be fixed). I even feel that Peter Cushing would have been a perfect Fuyutsuki, to the point that it would have been difficult to find a replacement due to the actor's retirement in 1986. Also, I assume that, after looking the part 2, the "naked woman Lilith" was the first version of the 2nd Angel.
I think that at the moment I have no more words for this intriguing concept.
this project sounds like a nightmare to execute (properly)
Peter Cushing as Fuyutsuki is actually great casting. Nice work, AI
Isn’t fuyutsuki suppose to be based off grand moff tarkin? He looks exactly like him
@@worickangelo7016 well yeah because Peter Cushing was tarkin.
1:26 that angel design is genuinely cool
Reminds me a bit of concepts from Jodorowsky's Dune meets David Lynch's Dune. And various Heavy Metal magazine art on top.
Okay but imagine actually seeing tokusatsu Evangelion, it'd come full circle
0:16 gendou ikari played by bryan cranston
The film was truly a product of its time. Meant to take a stand against radical Christians and it’s bad teachings, it stood out as a film that saw a truth and sought to expose it.
However, as a result, the film completely flopped in the West. Many critics calling it portentous and many Christian viewers were offended by its contents.
This however wasn’t the end of the series. As Japan loved the film so much, it later had an adaptation made purely for the Japanese market, this time with a lot of the Christian critical commentary removed. And thus, Evangelion as we now it was born.
Kozo Fuyutsuki is litterally Admiral Tarkin from starwars
00:18 Young Terence Fisher as Fuyutsuki.
Yeah you're right this is scary
Originally it's a sci-fi horror series, but not from 80's
Click.... Noice
Please do another of these!
I'd like to and I'm sorry for letting your hope down, but due to the payment system provided by Midjourney (Credit-Card only), I can not pay for the program, and the hassle of creating real E-Mail Accounts (Discord doesn't let you use throw-away E-Mail), it's not worth the afford to burn through about 10 Discord Accounts per Video to produce these videos.
Should Midjourney decide to enable PayPal as a Method of Payment, I will create a sequel to this and more.
Good News: I'm back at it. Tomorrow or the day after, most likely I should be finished with this.
Part 2 is out now: ruclips.net/video/_EiH3yuYLhU/видео.html
Why do they all look White rather than Japanese? 😑
The short answer: The title is clickbait to jump the bandwagon.
The long answer: Because it made sense in it's own context, which can be found in the description.
Most look super random and zero 80's, or Evangelion for that matter. Probably because you were trying to rip-off a very specific artist, and it just didn't work well with the franchise and theme.
Real talk though, imagine if a live action movie with an eerily similar premise to the anime was action in development during that time period.
