Just a technical thing but in order to get the chapters to work (as you have the timestamps in the description), you need to start the time codes at 0:00. Like "0:00 - Intro". That should trigger RUclips to add the chapters functionality to the video and make it easier to navigate. Keep up the good videos!
I’ve been loving all of these videos, they are very informative and perfect for what I’m looking for! Are there any books you suggest I read if I am interested in getting into investment banking?
I think the best overall book is the Rosenbaum & Pearl book, but it's pretty academic and dense. That's still what I mostly used to prepare, so I still recommend it. We'll probably come out with a comprehensive recruiting course next year.
Hey-- Just wanted to say I love your videos. I have watched a couple now and they are all top notch! they have helped me a lot. Well done and keep it going.
I tried this strategy and I think the success rate of getting response is low compared to following the usual process of job application (thru ATS, system review, recruiter call, hiring call, final interview and job offer). I resorted to doing this tactic because I am someone who dislikes recruiters a lot. I have so many terrible experience working with recruiters who have no clue of what they are hiring for and profiling me to opportunities that do not even match my experiences, talents and gifts. So far, I have reached out to 30 "possible" hiring managers, 11 of them responded, 7 got me into calls, 3 interviews and 0 offer yet. My advice is whilst you will do this strategy, it is still a must to follow the usual hiring process (even if working with recruiters is excruciating, you can only work with them at a certain amount of time until you get hired).
UPDATE: I reached out to 33 potential hiring managers. 12 of them responded and 8 of them got me into calls, 5 of them progressed to interviews and got 2 job offers. I started doing this on February 13, 2023 and ended June 2, 2023. So, it took me almost 4 months to succeed in this strategy.
Definitely great content Matt. Congratulations for the job done, it is well appreciated. I was wondering if you would change the template message for the follow ups. Thank you for any response in advance. Best regards from Spain.
Yes, I wouldn't re-send the entire thing again. Just do a quick one or two sentence e-mail. Say that you're following up and that you're still very interested in chatting. Then try to suggest a tangible time to chat (e.g. over the next two weeks).
Have you or can make a video of what to talk about once you get a positive reply and they actually want to get on a call? Also I can't find the link to excel sheet to track
"Reaching Out" always worked for me, you can add more detail if you have a connection with the recipient, e.g. "Canadian Reaching Out" or "Western University Student Reaching Out"
I know this is a late comment but there are sites that do the trial and error part for you. I used it for finding leads at a previous internship. If anyone’s interested I can give the links as I can’t recall them off the top of my head.
Now or next month is good for first year internship roles. Just make sure you're coming off professionally - might be good to get an older student review your emails and mock you over the phone.
Thanks for the video! Since it's the beginning of December, do you recommend sending these emails now, or would it be better to postpone until January?
Great video, I'm from Colombia and Investment Clubs are a new thing here. There are a people from my school working in NYC and I'm wondering If a LinkedIn message would be a good instrument in case I can't find their e-mails. Also, which'd you think it'd be a good link to mention knowing that investment clubs didn't exist back then. Thanks for the info!
Hi Matt, what would you recommend putting as the subject line/title of the E-mail? I am currently using "request to connect" or "Your experiences in Investment Banking". what do you think? :)
I just used "Reaching Out". What you're using is fine as well. If you have some share background, you can try to mention that in the email title, e.g. "Ivey student reaching out". Don't overthink the title too much :)
Great video. I’m a US/UK dual citizen (going to study at a UK university) and I think I want to spend my first year summer in the US (bachelors here take 3 years). Are there opportunities for US freshmans/sophomores I could apply to? Would cold emailing be helpful?
Yeah for sure, cold emailing is going to be your best tool! Make sure your resume and story are solid and then reach out (to alumni, people in your target city) like crazy.
Hi Matt, what would you recommend as an email to reconnect with people you've already had coffee chats with recently to express your interest in interning for the summer?
I would just be straightforward. Say you enjoyed connecting them before and have been interested in learning more about their firm. You are looking for an opportunity in that space for this summer and are wondering if their firm is hiring. Attach your resume. Pretty similar to an initial e-mail, just add a bit more pleasantries that reference your prior coffee chat / interactions.
Not a lot, but there are a few. A lot of the bulge brackets have small offices there, but each only has 1 or 2 analysts so it functions very much like a satellite office. Same goes for PE. HIG and Sun Capital are probably the big players, but even they don't have huge funds.
would i be reaching out to the recruitment team of the department i'm looking to get into, or reaching out directly to the employee's of that department?
Depends on the firm, but I generally find directly to employees to be better. Generally, the smaller the firm the more power the employees have. Larger firms tend to rely more on HR.
Hey Matt , I’m Ryan I’m currently a Junior undergraduate Mass Media Production student . I am however planning to switch career paths after graduation into the banking and investment industry. I have followed your videos for the past few months and want to know what advice you might have for a non traditional individual such as myself?
I think you should try joining the top investment and finance clubs at your school and try to get some relevant finance internship before graduating. Intern at search funds. If you graduate without any finance experience, it'll be tough to break in afterwards. If you can't get anything, then maybe do a 1 year masters in finance to get another shot at recruiting.
Here is a decent place to start: www.peakframeworks.com/post/investment-banking-coffee-chat-questions Try to just ask them thoughtful questions about their career and job.
I like to do cold emails before noon on Monday to Wednesday if possible. Just want to maximize chance that they're going to read it and be in a working mood
I prefer people working in the group because they'll be the ones ultimately picking resumes. Some larger banks are very bureaucratic in which case you'll have to work through HR.
If you're trying to get into finance, a degree is pretty necessary. But if you don't want to get a degree and have no connections, then yes, cold e-mailing is probably the only way you'd ever get any experience.
The story of 350 Emails to 1 offer is soooo motivative!
I used this strategy and got an off-cycle Asset Management internship in London!
the thing that really bought me was the fact that it'll be hard, hard as hell until you land your first internship, like man, it just spoke to me.
Wish I had this my freshman year, good video
even sophomore year would be insanely helpful..... ugh
It can be so demoralizing cold emailing people and having a low success rate. These tips can definitely improve the odds of getting responses. Thanks!

@@PeakFrameworks Sure, happy to help.
Personalizing each email is so important. Well said!
Love this post on cold emailing! It's such a crucial skill that can really open doors for us in our careers.
You could see comparable success with 1/2 the words -- have tested and seen great results with at max 5 sentence cold e-mails :)

Thank you forr sharing the statistocs ! I thought I was the only one with such low response rates ! This actually gives me hope.
Thank you! So helpful.
It all comes down to taking initiative for yourself!
God bless you ! Thank you so much for such helpful information.

Awesome video, thank you! How do you recommend wording the follow-up email? I want it to sound professional, and desperate/nagging for attention.
Cold emailing vs LinkedIn messaging? Which is better? I'm debating now. For a position. I'm leaning towards the emails.
This is very useful, thank you!

Message them on LinkedIn and ask for their email. :-) That's what I do!

Can you make a video about the alternative after passing undergrad if you can't make it to IB?
Sure! We can put that on the list. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hi where can I find the link to the tracking sheet you made? thanks
what should be the Subject Line?
How do I even get a hold of an HR official's email address?

Did you graduated from Ivey? I grated from Ivey as well.
do you recommend emailing multiple people at the same firm? example being 3 of the partners of a small 10 person firm or just 1 of them?
I would just start with 1 of them and then rotate if they don't get back to you after a few weeks.
Hi Matt, what would you recommend as an email to reconnect with people you've already had coffee chats with recently to express your interest in interning for the summer?
