Among the Mosques: A Journey Across Muslim Britain -- Why Prof. Ed Husain is Worried.

  • Islam is the fastest-growing faith community in Britain. Domes and minarets are redefining the skylines of towns and cities as mosques become an increasingly prominent feature. Yet while Britain has prided itself on being a global home of cosmopolitanism and modern civilisation, its deep-rooted relationship with Islam is complex, threatened by rising hostility.
There is much media debate about embracing diversity in our communities, but what does integration look like on the ground, in places like Dewsbury, Glasgow, Belfast and London? How are Muslims, young and old, reconciling British values - of individualism, the rule of law, free speech & equality between the sexes - with literalist interpretations of their faith? And how is this tension, away from the public gaze, unfolding inside mosques today?
In this episode of #SWYSI, author & academic Prof. Ed Husain discusses how his new book "Among the Mosques: A Journey Across Muslim Britain" took him into the heart of Britain's Muslim communities in a search for answers.
Travelling the length and breadth of the country, Husain joins men and women in their prayers, conversations, meals etc. He tells their stories here in an open and honest account that brings the daily reality of British Muslim life sharply into focus - a struggle of identity and belonging, caught between tradition and modernity, East and West, revelation and reason.
Ed Husain is an adjunct Professor in the Walsh School of Foreign Service in Georgetown University. He is also a writer and political advisor who has worked with leaders and governments across the world. He has held senior fellowships at think tanks in London and New York, including at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) at the height of the Arab uprisings (2010-2015). While at CFR, his policy innovation memo led to the US-led creation of a Geneva-based global fund to help counter terrorism.
Husain was a senior advisor to former British Prime Minister Tony Blair (2015-2018). From 2018-2021 he completed his doctoral studies on Western philosophy and Islam under the direction of the English philosopher Sir Roger Scruton. He is the author of The Islamist (Penguin, 2007), The House of Islam: A Global History (Bloomsbury, 2018), and Among the Mosques (Bloomsbury, 2021). His writing has been shortlisted for the George Orwell Prize. A regular contributor to the Spectator magazine, he has appeared on the BBC and CNN and has written for the Telegraph, The Times, the New York Times, the Guardian and other publications.

@@johnfisher247 The problem is that the UK does not remember that it was the Barbary pirates who were Muslims who for 300 years attacked and plundered not only those countries bordering the Mediterranean but as far north as the English Channel, Ireland, Scotland and Iceland, with the western coast of England almost being raided at will.
Barbary pirates raided on land as well as at sea. In August 1625 corsairs raided Mount’s Bay, Cornwall, capturing 60 men, women and children and taking them into slavery. They were taken to slave markets where if those captured were from rich families, they would ransomed and held hostage till paid, or if male without money would be routinely castrated and women sold as slaves send wives, some forced to convert to Islam. I understand why Poland and Hungary do not want Islam in their countries because they recall the not so distant past but the UK does not.

In the fashionable thinking of liberals, beginning in the late 19th century, the big idea concerning religion, which still hangs on today among sheltered elites, was "ecumenism" -- that all the religions can be reduced to their common denominator, which turns out to be "love they neighbour and enjoy the scenery", as summed up best in the Beatles song, "Imagine".
All evidence to the contrary is stubbornly, yet somehow blithely, ignored.

After Mo died 632 his position was then filled by a series of Caliphs, they continued the expansionist policy of imperialism and colonialism as they spread Islam by the sword. I'll outline the history into Europe, but don't forget the expansionist policy also spread west into North Africa all the way to Morocco, and further East to China. I'll be brief in my outline:
By 668 jihad manifested itself outside the walls of Constantinople
      711 Islamic armies invaded Spain
800 years of fighting followed until 1492
The jihad engulfed more nations than the Palestine-bound Crusades (there were 8 of these between 1096 and 1270, less than 200 years, they wanted to establish themselves in the holy land which was formerly Christian)
Far grander jihad continued as Muslims wanted to take and occupy Europe and Islamize it. Large parts of Europe were taken and occupied for centuries, sometimes devastated and some of it Islamized.
      Spain
      Portugal
      France
      Italy
      Sicily
      Austria
      Bosnia
      Serbia
      Croatia
      Hungary
      Romania
      Wallachia
      Albania
      Moldavia
      Bulgaria
      Greece
      Armenia
      Georgia
      Poland
      Ukraine
      Eastern and southern Russia
All Jihad battlefields where Islam conquered or was conquered. Many of those lands were occupied by Muslims, in some cases by Arabs or Moors, in others by Ottoman Turks, usually for hundreds of years.
      Spain 800 years
      Portugal 600
      Greece 500
      Sicily 300
      Serbia 400
      Bulgaria 500
      Romania 400
Hungary 150 years - a place particularly ruined/plundered and ravaged and it took 200 years to recover.
Muslims came and occupied a huge part of Europe, the Turks besieged Vienna twice in 1529 and 1683. Their cavalry raided central Europe, riding into Bavaria almost as far as Nuremberg. They fought in Poland and the Ukraine, crushed Hungary, occupied Belgrade and Budapest for hundreds of years.
The Moors and the Arabs took Spain and Portugal, invaded France through the Pyrenees, turned Sicily into an Islamic island, raided Rome, sacked St Peter's and obliged the pope to pay tribute. From their base near St Tropez they raided Switzerland as far as Lake Constance on the German border. The pirates of the Barbary coast raided England, Denmark, Ireland, Iceland and brought back thousands of slaves for the markets of Constantinople (after they had turned it into Istanbul) and North Africa. The Mongols threatened Moscow, occupied the Crimea and became Tatars. The Persians marched into Georgia, so did the Turks, who also occupied Armenia.
Some imagine that the sack of Jerusalem in 1099 was the start of the hostility between Islam and the West, they handily ignore the capture of Jerusalem from the Christians in 638, the invasion of Spain some 70 years later by the Arabs and Moors, and the subsequent 800 year occupation in whole or in part of the Iberian peninsula.
It is interesting that the west has by-and-large forgotten this history, but it hasn't been forgotten by orthodox muslims, those who see the eventual expulsion of the invading force as a shame, and who seek to take back the lands of Al Andalus etc.
It is in quite stark contrast that western Europeans do not celebrate their colonialist past, yet there are significant numbers of those within dar-ul-Islam who consider their colonialism to be a glorious one.

As a supply teacher I found myself working with a Muslim TA and she was lovely. On the day before the anniversary of 9/11 we were discussing it, and I shared that on that day I was working in a Y6 class predominently Asian boys of 11, there were only a few girls and only three of them white. I was called out the room to be told quietly that has the twin towers had been attacked and there was a huge fire. I was absolutely not to discuss it, which was a moot point because this before the days of mobile phones and ready access to the internet. I was not aware of what was going on, until the evening when the momentous events unfolded. However, the next day I was back in the classroom, and those boys were ecstatic. They loved it. I was unable not to discuss it because they were and I couldn't understand how they could hate so much, and I asked them if they would be happy if I were in that building, being white. I was teaching them all term and we had a reasonable relationship, I won't say they were well behaved as they weren't. But it did open my eyes to the idea that multiculturalism doesn't work. I have no problem working and mixing and actually being friends with Muslims, but at that point I honestly felt that immigration and integration would never work. Sorry if I upset people, but even twenty years later, I am still of that persuasion,

I wasn't even upset when the sirens went and bombs began dropping, though perhaps if a thousand pounder had landed within a 100 yards I might have been. I learned early on to take upsetting things in my stride, an experience most modern kids never have and are the worse off for it. Absolutely right. Unfortunately our leaders and many of us, suffer from the OSTRICH SYNDROME. My father wept when Poland and Hungary fell into communism and wept for joy when communism fell. He taught many Poles to fly in the war. I applaud their people today and what we have done to help them; I saw in the seventies what they suffered at first hand. Loss of culture, personal identity and freedom are hard won and easily lost. Religion when hijacked by politics is lethal and in the UK our institutions are being sanitised by stealth. Its rapidity in recent months has at least awakened us to the issues.
