Poly was very unique and one of the more authentic people that came out of Punk. Making her own clothes, protesting against materialism and following the crowd. Great little band too.

This one made a big impression on me when I first heard it. It showed that not all Punk had to be about frantic energy. I think to be a distinctive singer is far more important than being a good singer. Another less well remembered band female fronted band from the punk/new wave era is the Rezillos, with their song Top of the Pops, which may be worth listening to.

" . . .Scrub away the S.R way" S.R. was a soap company in the UK. It's about a girl with OCD. "you can touch her if your gloves are sterilized". This was in the heyday of Punk.

In case you couldn't tell, they were, at the time, verging on being a concept-band with "mindless consumerism" as their theme - see also The Day The World Turned Day-Glo, Warrior In Woolworths, Age etc.
Poly Styrene - cue pangs of waist-level nostalgia for many men of a certain age - we never knew we needed an Anglo-Somalian weeble in a military uniform

'Cleanliness is next to Godliness', you were always told this growing up, the Punk movement was about going against the Establishment of the day and what was considered the normal way to behave, this song captures that. 'SR' was a popular brand of toothpaste in the '60s and '70s made by the firm 'Gibbs'.

Poly Styrene was a genius. She was a black opera -trained singer, but sang in a working-class London accent, which is very different to modern London artists like Adele, who sing in a phoney American accent. This song is about the endless barrage of advertisements to consume personal hygiene products, deodorants, toothpaste, mouthwash, etc, which in the end only ensures the consumers adopt Obsessive Compulsive Disorder traits.

It's funny how some songs take you back to a time and a place. I remember hearing this for the first time in a record shop where I was killing time before going to a football (soccer) match! I think like most lyrics this isn't to be taken literally. As others have said, I think it touches on obsessive compulsive behaviour and the advertising that bombards us with so many products to be squeaky clean and sweet smelling! I really like Polly's voice and the slower than usual pace of this song. Thanks for reacting, I enjoy your work!

Their appearance on Top Of The Pops shocked the middle class audience with her attack on media pressure to look perfect. Similar to The Rezillos Appearance on Top Of The Pops with a song called Top Of The Pops. A lot of their songs were about fear, be it Nuclear war, consumerism and advertising putting fear into people by exaggerating the truth ie teeth brushing deodorant etc creating the obsession she is singing about, the more you listen to all of their songs the more you understand the clever points the lyrics are slightly masking. Hope you listen to more of their music and eventually appreciate how clever it was. The Album Conscious Consumer takes it to another level and I believe but stand to be corrected Poly Styrene had a lot more input on that album both lyricaly and musically. Unlike Me, Poly was a Vegetarian and an Active protester against consumerism and many more ideas. May She RIP after dying of breast cancer only at age 53.

Thanks for that guys, as you say, you can't like them all and I'd rather an honest reaction than an obviously fake "yeah, that's great" (No channel names lol) If and obviously it's a big if, you could find the time at some point to do a reaction to 'Levitation' from the album of the same name by Hawkwind that would be amazing, I've only seen 1 other channel react to them, and he's now hooked lol, it's a huge rabbit hole to fall into, anyway thanks again, it's good feeling to see a channel respond to your request.

We hate that too. We see nothing wrong with analyzing and critiquing songs we hear for the first time. That's supposed to be what you do for yourself every time you hear a new song. And we don't feel it's honest to lie just to make you feel good, or to get likes. If you're a fan of these songs, that's your taste, based on your experience. It doesn't have to be ours. And that's fine.
