Why? He's British and having a gear stick is the 'norm' there. Learning to drive a manual means you're also allowed to drive the lazy auto box cars. Whereas if his test had only been passed on an auto then he'd need a second test before allowed to drive a normal car.

Monaco is the worst and best place to own a supercar. Best because you can certainly be seen, worst because you can't go over 30 mph.
