Regardless of the historical correctness, I think Berry does a magnificent job in this very challenging aria. A masterclass in singing Bach, straight from the heart.

Bach`s Matthew Passion and Beethovens 5th are my favorite compozitions

A cellist had a nightmare that he was playing the Matthew Passion and when he woke up, he was.

A great performance, performed with tenderness. There is no need to fight performance practice issues here. Richter was cutting the edge in the 1950's that original instrument performers followed in the late 1960s. Also it is a very different approach to Bach, which is neither romantic or modern. It is an old tradition. The text is honored. The cross where Jesu died and his love transcends performance practice. Come sweet Jesus. Come sweet cross.

I prefer this piece with a Viola de Gamba, a cello doesn't work for some reason. Walter Berry is good, I just like the period performance better for some reason.

Also it seems like modern cellists' main goals are maintaining legato and minimizing energy usage rather than evoking strong rhythmic and emotional energy.

Pretentious conducting of KR from the harpsichord. Nobody needs his waving hand whenever one of his hands is free. God gave all musicians a sense of a steady rhythm.

The name "Walter Berry" is last and only name one needs to know when seeking a true baritone.

Richter might have been great in the past but currently all his performances of Bach make me want to cry, and not because of their beauty.... He approaches the music as if Bach were a romantic, which he was not.

Wrong, absolutely wrong, everybody who says that does not understand music! Richter de-romanticized Bach, who was played by great symphonic orchestras, he was a revolutionary and brought Bach to a fresh, clear and balanced new authenticity. He was the pioneer of the Bach Reinassance. He remains the absolute reference for both Bach and Haendel. Besides, in my opinion, there nothing worse than a scratchy period practice ensembles from the mid to late Eighties.

Viva Richter y sus brillantes interpretaciones de Bach con instrumentos modernos.

Better Romantic than Baroque. Koopman and the others plays all in the same way : staccato, with no dinamics and with the horrible period instruments.

    Matthew 27
    33. And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
    34. They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
    34. ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ πιεῖν ⸀οἶνον μετὰ χολῆς μεμιγμένον· καὶ γευσάμενος οὐκ ⸀ἠθέλησεν πιεῖν.
    34. 쓸개 탄 포도주를 예수께 주어 마시게 하려 하였더니 예수께서 맛보시고 마시고자 아니하시더라
    35. And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
    35. σταυρώσαντες δὲ αὐτὸν διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ βάλλοντες κλῆρον,
    35. 저희가 예수를 십자가에 못 박은 후에 그 옷을 제비 뽑아 나누고
    36. And sitting down they watched him there;
    36. καὶ καθήμενοι ἐτήρουν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ.
    36. 거기 앉아 지키더라
    37. And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
    37. καὶ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπάνω τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ τὴν αἰτίαν αὐτοῦ γεγραμμένην· Οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰησοῦς ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων.
    37. 그 머리 위에 이는 유대인의 왕 예수라 쓴 죄패를 붙였더라
    38. Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
    38. Τότε σταυροῦνται σὺν αὐτῷ δύο λῃσταί, εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων.
    38. 이때에 예수와 함께 강도 둘이 십자가에 못 박히니 하나는 우편에, 하나는 좌편에 있더라
    39. And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
    39. οἱ δὲ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν
    39. 지나가는 자들은 자기 머리를 흔들며 예수를 모욕하여
    40. And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
    40. καὶ λέγοντες· Ὁ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις οἰκοδομῶν, σῶσον σεαυτόν· εἰ υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ θεοῦ, ⸀κατάβηθι ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ.
    40. 가로되 성전을 헐고 사흘에 짓는 자여 네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든 자기를 구원하고 십자가에서 내려오라 하며
    41. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
    41. ὁμοίως ⸀καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων καὶ ⸀πρεσβυτέρων ἔλεγον·
    41. 그와 같이 대제사장들도 서기관들과 장로들과 함께 희롱하여 가로되
    42. He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
    42. Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν, ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι· ⸀βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ ἐστιν, καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ καὶ πιστεύσομεν ἐπ’ ⸀αὐτόν.
    42. 저가 남은 구원하였으되 자기는 구원할 수 없도다 저가 이스라엘의 왕이로다 지금 십자가에서 내려올찌어다 그러면 우리가 믿겠노라
    43. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
    43. πέποιθεν ἐπὶ τὸν θεόν, ῥυσάσθω ⸀νῦν εἰ θέλει αὐτόν· εἶπεν γὰρ ὅτι Θεοῦ εἰμι υἱός.
    43. 저가 하나님을 신뢰하니 하나님이 저를 기뻐하시면 이제 구원하실찌라 제 말이 나는 하나님의 아들이라 하였도다 하며
    44. The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.
    44. τὸ δ’ αὐτὸ καὶ οἱ λῃσταὶ οἱ συσταυρωθέντες ⸀σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν.
    44. 함께 십자가에 못 박힌 강도들도 이와 같이 욕하더라
