It's tough being a Sabres fan, but it was tougher back then being a Bills fan when they missed the playoffs for 17 straight seasons. Buffalo is no stranger to playoff droughts, but droughts are meant to eventually end, even as my hair goes grayer.
Actually, it's worse for the Sabres, because for much of the Bills' playoff drought, they only could get one of three playoff spots, one of the two wild card spots or the division title, which they weren't going to get because New England had Tom Brady. The Sabres, though, had between 5 and 6 playoffs spots they could get, plus be a top 24 team in the COVID year, and they still haven't gotten it yet.
I actually disagree, for a couple reasons, having been a fan of both teams through both droughts, the Sabres are like just not fun to watch for any reason right now, like I put the games on as background, because they just aren't entertaining. The Bills even in the duration of the drought, only playing like 16 games a season helps a lot, given you know that it's hard to make the NFL playoffs and they had the unfortunate juggernaut of the Pats to deal with. Also for NHL 16 teams make playoffs, that's over half the league (or was until a couple years ago), whereas the NFL (also before a few years ago) only had 12 teams make the playoffs
@@gingerelvis93 Those are some good points. I won't be a total doomer like many twitter commenters on the Sabres handle, but it is still frustrating to be out of contention for so long. I think in the beginning Terry Pegula had a lot to learn about owning a sports franchise, and he is still facing the pains of a lot of those early decisions that led to a failed rebuild. There is plenty to criticize now, but Kevyn Adams also inherited a chaotic situation, after the mismanagement from the previous two general managers. I don't blame many for not wanting to mop up that mess and thus passing on that job. It's hard to tell fans to be patient at this point, but unfortunately Rome wasn't built in a day. Let's see if Lindy can help make these players resilient. I won't call for everybody to get fired after two losses, as easy as it is to just react to individual losses in such a way.
As a down market, cold, and economically stagnant city with a 13 year playoff drought and no cup, throwing away another year isnt an option. This cycle of losing only makes it more difficult for any future GM to attract players who intend on winning a cup. But for now, Im remaining steadfast.

I’m a Sabres fan and I just think it’s gonna take a month to get used to Lindy and the way he wants them to play. Also look for a good run then. I really believe they will have a 10-12 wins in 15-18 games type streak at that time to get us kinda back in the thick of things. I picked em to make the playoffs when Lindy was hired and I stand by it. I know I have nothing really to believe that by other than a hunch but that’s me.
Shannon, Sabres scored first in Game 2 Thompson at 8:18 of the 2nd period. New Jersey scored on the power play at11:59. Peterka is on the top line, Benson is with Cozens & Quinn on the 2nd line.
They had the lead today, 1-0. Let's not overreact. You had Edmonton ranked #31 in your rankings last year for a bit and said you were considering making them #32. I said at the time, that was ridiculous. It was. They corrected their ship. Sabres are different. The only reason to be concerned, is if New Jersey is NOT a good team. I think they are. I think they're going to make the playoffs. If the Devils don't, or are average, or maybe slightly above average, then the Sabres have issues. They got thoroughly outplayed, but how good was their opponent? What concerned me, was the powerplay which looked horrendous. They simply do not know how to gain the zone. It's incredible. The Devils just stood on the blueline and the Sabres never got set up. It was giving me neutral zone trap flashbacks from the 90's. I SO WISH, the NHL abolished the blue line. The Two-line pass is gone, thankfully. Only thing that matters is icing. [Don't we all love waiting after EVERY DAMN goal, to see if the opposing coach is going to video challenge offsides cause someone had their skate over the line?!] Talk to me about the Sabres after their next five games. If their record is this bad then, THEN I'm panicking. Right now, I'm concerned. It's a long season though, and there were things I liked from the new additions.
I think you nailed every aspect here. NJ is maybe a top team in the East, so no shame. And the power play was utterly atrocious, just so slow and disjointed. (PP2 looked pretty great though.) The injuries are concerning, as our LW depth, which was already thin, has vanished.
I'm not worried (as of yet). Teams start slow (Edmonton is a perfect example), but can bounce back. Just hoping things don't spiral too fast and it's unsavable. I actually like the team this year, and on paper it's the best we've in a looong time.
I really hate to break it to you, but the current sabres and those oilers are nowhere near the same team. The numbers, even during that losing streak, suggested that they were getting SUPREMELY unlucky to lose those many of those 13 games. Although I do hope that the sabres can bounce back and make at least a close run at the playoffs, just wouldn't get hopes up
I agree with you about not overreacting to a slow start but comparing the Oiler's situation to the Sabres makes that point seem really dumb. It's not like the Sabres don't have talent but these two teams are not even close to being in comparable positions.
Let me clarify. I'm not ACTUALLY comparing Edmonton and Buffalo one to one. I'm just saying that Edmonton had a bad start and made a cup final in spite of it. I'm not saying buffalo will do that, I'm literally just saying bad starts don't ALWAYS mean disaster.
Fight through it Buffalo. Dwell on the smaller picture, which is just the two games, not the drought, or what COULD happen. Clean up the various issues and be ready to go for the home opener. The past is the past. We control our competitive spirit and we have a choice on how we approach the next game from that standpoint. Go out, play your ass off and get two points.
Over two games, the Sabres looked threatening in a offensive possession twice, maybe three times. And one of them was today when they had the goalie pulled. Under Ruff, they looked aimless, unfocused, and easily discouraged. I should know, I saw that from the Devils last season. It’s early yet, but I don’t think this was the right hire.
If they get off to a bad start against LA on Thursday, it's over. At least with the fans. The team has no identity, and hardly anyone willing to work or play hard besides Dahlin. And he was injured two minutes into training camp...
The trouble is NJ is just such a poor matchup for us. They are so similar in so many ways but a notch above across the board. No areas where we have an advantage to exploit.
@@benlemcke2863 they have a pretty tough opening schedule. I would't be surprised if they start 3-7 or something like that. Im not a Sabres fan but i wanna see them get back in the playoffs. I feel bad for them.
Buffalo has to get used to Ruff’s new schemes, lots of new faces on the revamped bottom-six, and the loss of respected vets like Okposo over the course of this new Regular Season. Practice is on thing; the games are real now, where reality gets real in a hurry. It’ll take at least a dozen games to see what’s what, and what isn’t working.
I'm starting to wonder if we've overvalued our talent and that the 22-23 season stats were a fluke with this being the kind of team that they actually are.
Sabres fan here. My level of concern isn't very high right now. Obviously the two games in Prague were very bad. The power play and basically the entire offense was non existent. The team played very slow overall. I expected them to play a lot faster since that was a point of concern with Lindy coming in. There is a lot of promise to this team. New coach, new system, a lot of new/young players. I do think Kevin Adams is on the hot seat this year, but I'm nowhere near ready to hit the panic button on this team.
So you get rid Mitts and Skinner, while having scoring issues, don’t bolster your top 6, and have 7m in cap space while needing to make the playoffs… gross and blatant mismanagement.
I’m pretty sure all of Buffalo already knew this team would be worse than last year. They have Tuch and Greenway on the top line and PP instead of the 3rd line where they belong.
Correction shannon tage thompson scored the first goal of today's game comma therefore giving buffalo a one nothing lead. So they did have a lead in today's game.
As a Sabres fan, I am just done with this. I don't know what to do anymore. No one wants to come here via FA or Trades. GMKA is showing he is not good at drafting. Tage Thompson is not a 1st line center it's clear that one season was a one-off. I honestly think it is time to move this team or find a new owner.,
I don't see a win against LA or FL. It's a very steep ramp to start this season for the Sabres. Let's see how many games remain until the "fire Lindy" chants start.
You could completely flip the Sabres two real season games and all of their preseason and convince me the preseason was regular season. They were fast, clean, aggressive, and I grabbed JJ Peterka for fantasy because of it. Those back to backs against NJ were ugly.
FYI, The Sabres did have a brief 1 - 0 lead in game 2. Peterka was on the 1st line with Tage and Tuch. Benson was on the 2nd line with Quinn and Cozens. So, injuries to two top 6 forwards and a bottom 6. Makes the Jeff Skinner buyout look even dumber. How Kevyn Adams wasn't fired years ago is beyond me. Oh wait, we know: $$$$$$$.
Wooo! Sabres already got a video! Hell yeah. At least we're first in something.

Can't wait for the Ottawa vid if we get off to a slow start.
people need to realize there is no easy games in NHL anymore😄
Felt like Sabres were physically not ready. Too slow and too sloppy.
14 years so what its entertainment.... Pick a side and roll with it...thats what i do and its buffalo where i grew up
Buffalo's having a "new" coach in Lindy Ruff definitely sounds weird.
I feel like this video should have been shown to the Sabres on Friday morning.
The trouble is NJ is just such a poor matchup for us. They are so similar in so many ways but a notch above across the board. No areas where we have an advantage to exploit.
Fire Lindy chants might start early this season.
I am expecting booing first, if the LA game also goes sideways
@@benlemcke2863 they have a pretty tough opening schedule. I would't be surprised if they start 3-7 or something like that. They can't be losing to the bottom feeders this year they gotta win those games. they could start 0-10 potentially look at the teams they have to face. Im not a Sabres fan but i wanna see them get back in the playoffs. I feel bad for them.
@@benlemcke2863have a feeling the Kings gonna wreck them lmao
Are you doing the review for sens and Habs?
Not worried at all. We did not play our best. But a lot of track left to get it right
It’s ok to put in your summary that you goofed and they had the lead in game 2 👍🏼
It will take time to adjust to Ruff's syatem. Specifically the zone entry which looked especially bad.
The year we missed the playoff by 1 point they lost back to back games 8 times. That’s the little glimmer of hope I’m leaning on
So u want them to miss the playoff again?
@@kaz6854I would take them missing out by a point or 2 if it meant the season wasn’t over by January again
Even though the Sabres started off slow; I did enjoy the Devils Twitter chirping them after the fact.
concern: worried trying not to over react
6:13 They scored first today
They had a lead in the 1st period game 2.
It has been a really Ruff start to the season for Buffalo... heh heh.
They need to beat Columbus and Chicago, and 2 of LA/Pitt/Det, or they'll be in big troubs
you know you have power brother Yvonne is your secret power
Peyton Krebs was a healthy scratch in the first game and only register one SOG in the second game in Prague.
I'll make my judgement after next week.
As a Detroit fan, I’m okay with them struggling a little
They did score first on the 2nd game, so they led for a little under 4 minutes!
It’s two games. Let’s see if they can make adjustments when they get home.
Sabres are toast and people are pissed there I said it. I'm not getting my hopes up for the Sens either.
6:30 didn’t they score the first goal today?
im looking at the same problems with this sabres team.. who is going to do what. and will players take steps. same questions, no answers.
They did have the first goal today. Then NJ got the last 3.
the Sabres are the team that other teams take the night off and expect ( and usually do) to win. The Sabres don't get to do that right now.
Perfect start for the sabres. They’re going to the big dance this year. I think they started the last 4 octobers 10:0 and then choked
I cannot wait to boo the crap out of this team Thursday night
Can we do a power ranking tomorrow lol
New Jersey is a machine
I'm starting to wonder if we've overvalued our talent and that the 22-23 season stats were a fluke with this being the kind of team that they actually are.
they are on my dnd list.
levi looks good though
Will that be another year Buffalo doesn't make the playoffs? The Atlantic will be hell this year and we might even see surprises.
God it would be good to see them not suck. 😢
I have a strong feeling this will be another wasted season...
As a Sabres fan, I am just done with this. I don't know what to do anymore. No one wants to come here via FA or Trades. GMKA is showing he is not good at drafting. Tage Thompson is not a 1st line center it's clear that one season was a one-off. I honestly think it is time to move this team or find a new owner.,
Levi is the bright spot.
I'm so over the suffering lol.
Ruff retread. I don't get it.
Sabres fan since 70s ,i.have 0 confidence in this group of forwards
I don't see a win against LA or FL. It's a very steep ramp to start this season for the Sabres. Let's see how many games remain until the "fire Lindy" chants start.
Maybe Pegula should just sell the team and have them move to Quebec City. This has gotten ridiculous.
You could completely flip the Sabres two real season games and all of their preseason and convince me the preseason was regular season. They were fast, clean, aggressive, and I grabbed JJ Peterka for fantasy because of it. Those back to backs against NJ were ugly.
Buffalo has had great starts in seasons past but they always fall apart midway through. I have Buffalo coming last in the division this year.
FIRE LINDY
FYI, The Sabres did have a brief 1 - 0 lead in game 2. Peterka was on the 1st line with Tage and Tuch. Benson was on the 2nd line with Quinn and Cozens.
So, injuries to two top 6 forwards and a bottom 6. Makes the Jeff Skinner buyout look even dumber. How Kevyn Adams wasn't fired years ago is beyond me. Oh wait, we know: $$$$$$$.
Huge disappointment so far for Sabers. Keefe proving he is a good coach.
