      And what a fucking ending. Saku Koivu breaks his stick and goes get a new one, and right from that attack brief 5on4 Swedes score the 3-2 winning goal. This has never been accepted or respected in Finland... not the way to go. We still talk about this final and are still pissed off at the stick maker.

    Looking back now, I think the way the Europeans played the game back then was closer to how the modern game is played than the North American game of the mid 00s. Just a more fluid and open game in general.

      Unfortunately a lot of Canadians see themselves as superior when it comes to hockey. There is no denying that Canada produces a lot of talents - but they stick their nose up a liiiittle bit too much at times. But... that being said, a lot of EU countries are the exact same when it comes to football (or soccer for people in NA)

    both finland and sweden are great hockey nations. Both of em had a good chance of winning this game. at the end of the day its about luck, since they are so close. Its still fun to watch games between Fin and Swe, both teams deliver amazing hockey. it wouldnt be unfair if Finland won the final 2006.

  • @JellyfishOverlord
    @JellyfishOverlord 7 лет назад +15

    For me (as a Swede, I am bias, of course, but still) it's really hard to listen to all the "Finland should have won" comments on this video.
    Fine, Finland did beat Russia with 4-0 in the semi final, a damn good result. But at the same time, Sweden beat Czech Repulbic with 7-3. I see that as just as damn good of a result.
    The group stage means basically nothing, as far to many teams have experienced during all these years. Do remember that Slovakia won all their five games, just as Finland did. Would everything had been fair, Slovakia and Finland would have played in the finals. But they didn't.
    Finland might have had the team of a lifetime, but Sweden did as well. See Christian Levi's comment. I truly enjoyed the final game, from a sports bar in a ski resort southern Switzerland. More or less no one but Swedes and Finns were there. It was a truly amazing experience, with some teasing but mostly great sportsmanship from also all of us supporters, no matter what nationality.
    The final was very well played, quite locked down, but still very entertaining. Both teams played well, but in the end the final amazing goal by Forsberg/Sundin/Lidström (can any national team ever beat that trio? Few, if any.) was what separated the both teams. Anyone who claims that a different Finnish goalkeeper would have saved that shot...That goal is more or less untakeable. Unless the goalie knows specifically where Lidström is going to shoot, he won't be able to save a shot like that. Well played though, Finns, it was a truly enjoyable experience, from start to end.

      The team that scores more goals is the winner, it's as simple as that. I think those comments you mentioned may have something to do with disbelief and shock. When I watched this final live back in 2006 (I was just 11 back then) and after it ended, I was so angry, sad and bitter at the same time, because I wanted so much to see our team win the Olympic gold and I kept hoping that they would somehow tie the game and take it to the overtime. But Sweden had a real hardcore team in those Olympics and that shot of Lidström... just wow.
      When I watched this game again a couple of years ago (the first time after watching it live in 2006), I could see that the longer the game went on, the more it seemed that Sweden had the upper hand. And I know that this might sound silly, but Finland was lucky that it was just 3-2 for Sweden, with better finishing Sweden would have led even by 5-2.
      I don't like to lose, no one does, but that doesn't mean that I should not congratulate/give credit to the opponent.

      You won due to a stick malfunction, as simple as that. Watch the 3-2 goal, the damn stick breaks on Koivu, he goes to get a new one - Swede's go on a brief 5on4, and score the winning goal 3-2. Is this so hard to comprehend to you?
