Law here, thanks for the great reaction guys! Excited to see an episode on Taemin and hope to see a SHINee pt. 2, as well as videos on other member solos in the future!
11:52 actually the song itself is not remastered only the video is, so it sounds exactly the same it did in 2008 which just adds to the fact how amazing of a song this is. 16 years later Replay is still the best debut song in K-pop, period. Btw, f(x)'s Victoria is playing the 'noona' in the video.
16:20 Lucifer's demo was by Bebe Rexha. It's no secret the song is quite of its time as back in that era 2009-2013 K-pop was big on the 'earworm' songs that would get stuck in your head (their most infamous being Ring Ding Dong that I did not include in this list). So when it comes to that Lucifer does its job, it's supposed to be repetitive. As you said the vocal harmonization on it is top notch, and I really like that acapella outro which adds just a little cherry on top.
22:36 good observation Kaz, the video would be controversial in any era of K-pop not just back then, like you don't really see videos with that much skinship and sorta sexualized scenes with girls coming out. A lot of the netizens and even fans were criticizing and calling it inapropriate but SHINee always breaks the mold and does something new. The song was a big changeup for them at the time from highly intense and powerful songs such as Lucifer, Sherlock, Everybody to this which was way more laid back. At the time a lot of people thought of it was underwhelming and even Taemin was uncertain about releasing View at first, but hey it worked out and became one of their most iconic songs/eras ever. It brought deep house and more loose casual wear into K-pop. Jonghyun also wrote the lyrics for it, which is about synesthesia and it's so good they use it as an examples to explain the phenomenon in Korean schools.
24:40 PREACH, SHINee literally IS the standard when it comes to vocals and live performances. They elevate all of the songs to another level because their performance ability is so insane. You can dislike SHINee's music but you can never hate them for being bad, the talent of all these men speaks for itself. Many other artists cite them as an inspiration, they are the idol's idol.
31:20 Sherlock was the first fusion song in K-pop comprised of two other songs 'Clue' and 'Note' that is why it's called Sherlock (Clue + Note). SM later decided to replicate that with SuperM's One (Monster & Infinity) because it was so iconic and did so well. Nowadays K-pop is saturated with these fusion/switchup songs but I believe Sherlock and One are still the only ones that have actually all of the mashup songs released as separate b-sides on their respective albums. Sherlock was the song that started the iconic 'SHINee's back!' tag that you heard at the beginning. Sherlock's choreo was the most expensive one SM had paid for at that time. It is also some of the most covered song together with Replay and View, the most recent cover being by Stray Kids. The girl in the video is SNSD's Jessica. It's a bit unfortunate you did not resonate with the chorus as much, but the song was definitely ambitious and experimental. It hits even harder performed live and they play with different rearrangements of the song.
39:30 Don't Call Me was their long awaited comeback in 2021 after about 3 years of hiatus since 2018 when Onew, Key and Minho enlisted. It's by a famous producer 'Dem Jointz' that has made a lot of experimental bangers for various K-pop groups and artists, predominantly in SM. It's basically SHINee in HD universe where their full potential gets highlighted. That is the case with their latest releases including the repackage to this album 'Atlantis' and the last year comeback with 'HARD' that is the most concurrent. SHINee once again tried something new for a title track even in the 13th year to their careers and right now a 16-year and counting group maintains their unwavering relevancy and longevity like no other. It's nice to hear some appreciation for Key's and Minho's rap as people tend to underrate it.

SHINee's "Replay," which came out May 25, 2008, is literally considered one of the best debut songs of all time for any Kpop artist because it's so timeless and it never goes out of style or sounds outdated no matter how old it gets. And this is why SHINee are Icons.
This song actually came out more than 16 years ago, however, SM Entertainment rebranded itself and started its new RUclips channel in 2011. The company reuploaded most of their older videos at that time. So, all their older MVs and content have a 2011 or newer date, but could be much older than that.
You're lucky you are watching this MV after SM remastered it, because now it has English subtitles. Because usually any of SM's videos that came out before 2018 don't have subs in the official video. (Only the video is remastered to up the quality of the video and to add subtitles, but the song is exactly how it was when they debuted. Just check out their debut showcase and then watch a live concert performance and you will discover that it sounds exactly the same.)
"Replay" isn't just nostalgic, it's legendary. And SHINee are legends. Every new rookie group in the industry has covered "Replay" at least once in their career and it's one of those songs that is pretty much compulsory for everyone to know and learn, even still today.
And, yes, of course SHINee can sing. As an SM group, you shouldn't expect any less. You can't be SM artists without having amazing vocal abilities. Even SM's rappers get intense vocal training. That is why SM is considered the vocal powerhouse of the industry, because ALL of its artists have out-of-this-world vocal abilities.
And not only are all the members of SHINee amazing singers, but they are the original vocal kings. EXO now may be considered "the vocal kings of Kpop", but SHINee were the ones that showed the industry what it meant to be vocalists. From day one, SHINee's main vocalists, Onew and Jonghyun, have been two of the top vocalists in the entire industry, and SHINee as a group make up one of the best vocal groups of all time.
Onew is the one in the hat, Jonghyun is the one with the headphones, Key is the one in green, Minho is the one playing basketball (he is always the tallest member) and Taemin is the one in yellow.
Onew (the leader and lead vocalist) was 18, Jonghyun (the main vocalist and a songwriter) had just turned 18, Minho (the main rapper and sub-vocalist) and Key (lead vocalist and sub-rapper) were 16 and Taemin (Main dancer and lead vocalist) was 14. However, now SHINee are known for the fact that there are no longer any fixed roles in their group. The main vocalists can rap, the rappers can fill in as main vocalists and they're all impressive dancers. SHINee are some of the most well-respected artists in the industry.
The Noona (the older girl SHINee have a crush on that they are singing to) in the "Replay" MV is the leader of their sister group***, Victoria from F(x). This MV came out more than a year before F(X) debuted, so this was Victoria even before debut. (Funny thing is, Victoria is native Chinese and she says she was still learning Korean during this time and she could barely even say SHINee.) Victoria was so perfect in this role because she is a few years older than any of the SHINee members so she fit well as the lead actress in this MV. As the song says, 'Noona neomu yeppeo .... replay, replay, replay ...." In other words, they are saying "pretty older woman I really like you and I think you like me too ... every time I see you, I need a replay of the moment over and over again in my head." Noona neomu yeppeo is a Korean term that essentially means "Pretty older woman" Noona neomu yeppeo is a term that is only used by guys to describe a beautiful woman that is older than them. There really isn't a literal translation of the term, so that is why the song is called "Replay" in English. But in Korean it is called "Noona neomu yeppeo." That's why if you watch SHINee on a lot of variety shows and TV programs, the older women in the show often ask SHINee to sing this song to them, even still today. This song makes all the women swoon. (Even 15 years later, when Taemin recently appeared on The Manager reality show, the female hosts of the show asked him to sing "Replay" to them.)
***SHINee and F(x) are both SM Entertainment groups, they debuted within a year of each other, they both are 5 member groups (Now 4 member groups ;( ) and they have similar music styles and concepts, etc. F(x) is pretty much the female version of SHINee.
SHINee are one of the most iconic and influential groups. They are always setting trends, never following them. SHINee were designed to be SM Entertainment's experimental boy group, so everything they do is meant to be the first and they are expected to create the trend. With every new song SHINee produces it's supposed to be different than the last, so you will never hear the same style or sound from them in any of their songs, even on the same album, and yet, somehow it will always sound like SHINee. They reinvent the industry with every new release.
Fun fact: SM originally wanted to make SHINee a hip-hop group. Hip-hop was the style of music that was really popular when they debuted. That's why Key and Minho are both rappers and how Taemin started out as a popper in dance. But as Key tells it, they just didn't have the swag they needed in order to be taken seriously as a hip-hop group. So, right before their debut, SM switched up their sound and style to "Replay," and the SHINee members spent a few intense weeks working on their vocal abilities in order to be able to match the skills needed for a vocal heavy song like this. And the rest is history. As you just heard, this is SHINee's signature classic contemporary R&B vocals they are now known for.
As you can see by their "Replay" MV, even at 14, Taemin was one of the best dancers in Kpop, and you will soon discover with the more that you watch from SHINee and Taemin's solo work, that he has only gotten more magnificent over the years.
SHINee are known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. From day one they became known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. When they debuted they were one of the only groups who were singing live while performing this intense choreography. And everyone was so shocked with their abilities.
The ONLY thing the SHINee members are not good at is lip syncing, therefore, they avoid it at all costs. When you hear SHINee singing, 95% of the time it will be live. It's a running joke between the fans and the members that when SHINee lip syncs you can tell because it's very obvious. So, unless they are required to lip sync for a specific reason, SHINee will always sing live.
They have trained their entire career to build endurance and stamina in order to be able to sing live and continue to sound flawless while performing like this for more than 3 hours straight in concert. SHINee set the standard. That is why they are so highly respected among their peers. It is literally referred to as the SHINee standard. It's the standard all other groups strive to reach.
You should also check out SHINee's "Replay" dance practice, ruclips.net/video/gv60nR3_69U/видео.html. It's not an official dance practice video because dance practice videos didn't become a thing until 2010 when SHINee released the very first dance practice video for their song "Lucifer," but it is a real dance practice video from way back to SHINee's debut days. SHINee are the reason why Kpop groups produce dance practice/choreography videos today.
SHINee just recently talked about how they spent months as trainees practicing this choreography in order to get it down perfectly. During Taemin's appearance on The Manager, you will see all 4 of the SHINee members in the dance studio practicing for their "Hard" comeback last year, as well as their concert performance, and they talk about what it was like when they were trainees learning the dance.

Thank you so much for checking SHINee out! I enjoyed watching and hearing your honest opinions about some of their music.
SHINee is most known for their vocals and live performances. Even songs that I would hate from other groups, SHINee somehow manages to make me enjoy listening to them because I love all of their voices. 16 years and I can count on one hand how many of their songs I only listen to when I'm in the mood. Also their ballads (solo and group) are honestly some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. If I had to choose just one group to listen to for the rest of my life I'd choose SHINee (though I'd try to get their sister group, f(x), thrown in as a 2 for 1 deal).
These songs are some of the most popular and talked about title tracks of theirs so I know why Lawol chose them but they are just the tip of the iceberg and it's often said some of SHINee's best work is in their b-sides. I don't know if you react to b-sides (this is my first video I've seen for your channel) but if you do please consider doing Orgel, Lock You Down, Area, and/or Insomnia. I highly recommend their title track, Married to the Music, and I feel you guys might really like their latest, Hard.
I hope you check out the other four members' solo music as well some time. Taemin (rightfully) gets a lot of attention but the other members are also super talented it makes me sad they seem to be forgotten when people do reaction videos. Plus, listening to all of them really gives you a sense of all the puzzle pieces that come together to make SHINee, well, SHINee. Not to mention Jonghyun who wrote, composed, and even produced most of his music is, in my opinion, one of the best music writers of our time. I can easily tell when I hear a song he wrote and he was the first SM artist to release music that he had a hand in making through the whole process.

Their body of work is incredibly solid, they actually have the vocal talent to back up their success, and collectively they bring so much attitude and fire. Kinda sad though because I became a fan way after Jonghyun passed away, and I high-key feel his absence in their recent songs. RIP to our main vocalist.

Yaaaaassss ❤! I'm so happy. Taemin is the performance god next to the humble GOAT BoA. I my favorite albums are Don't Call Me, Atlantis and HARD. 1 of 1 and The Light are close favorites. Replay is the first song of their I have listened to which was all the way back in 2 gen but they are most known for their song Lucifer which was controversial when it came out.

I forgot to mention KEY he actually has really good music as well. I actually own more of albums than Taemin even though I listen to Taemin more. I Wanna Be, Gasoline, Killer and possibly Tongue Tie but I'm still listening to it. His first Album is also good.

You may have noticed that "Sherlock" felt like you were listening to more than one song because it's a special song that combines 2 songs from SHINee's album "Clue" and "Note." That's why the title of this MV is "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" If you were to listen to the album, you would see that they are two separate songs, but when combined they become "Sherlock." So, in the MV you hear the mashup of the two songs.
Therefore, if you watch a live performance of "Sherlock (Clue & Note)", Minho's whisper part in their live performance is different than what you heard in the MV because when they perform it live, they chose different parts of "Clue" and "Note" to create "Sherlock" each time. When it comes to SHINee, every performance is very unique, which is one reason why SHINee's concerts are considered one of the best. No matter how many times you have heard a song or seen them perform, you will never get the same thing twice.
In SHINee's "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" MV the boys are Sherlock-like detectives who are looking for clues among the archives and displays in an old museum. The "ghost" girl -- who is played by Jessica Jung, the former member of Girls' Generation -- is helping SHINee solve a mystery by leaving them clues. At the end they realize that the girl they have been seeing and chasing after all day is actually the girl that was originally involved in the mystery when they find an article talking about her from 1910 and they discover that they must have been seeing a ghost.
The room where they have their dance breaks is the main hall of the museum, like a large ballroom in a mansion or great hall, etc. And the compass rose star in the middle of the floor I interpret to represent SHINee who are known as shining stars and it's a symbol for how they are navigating the globe as they reach fans all over the world.
In this song and MV SHINee are supposed to be detectives, so the choreography has been designed to give them Sherlock-like poses and to show them investigating clues, and taking photos, etc. That is why they do that Sherlock Holmes-style exaggerated march, and why you see them kneel down and draw a line on the floor, and why they hold their hands out like they are snapping a photo, and they have that move that looks like they are brushing dust from their sleeves, etc.
Yes, the brand name on the computer was iWatson. Like Sherlock Holmes' sidekick Watson. The computer helped SHINee solve the mystery.
SHINee was actually starting a fashion trend at that time. The group is known for being one step ahead when it comes to fashion because they are the ones that start the trends in Korea that eventually influence fashion trends around the world. Fashion designers actually covet a chance to work with SHINee, or any of the members individually for that matter, because they know that if they can get SHINee to wear their clothes that they will become super popular.
And, yes, this was the era of Taemin with long hair. Although, in the MV, Taemin's really long hair was a wig. He only has long straight hair during the dance breaks, but during the story sections his hair is much shorter and kind of curly. (He had to go back and forth between long and short hair for the MV shoot so it was easier for them to use a wig, but later on for promotions he had hair extensions.) However, he really did grow his hair long for a while during "Lucifer" area in 2010. Taemin with long hair is one of his most iconic looks. I didn't really like his wig look, but Taemin with naturally long hair/hair extensions during Sherlock era is one of my favorites. (He is actually known for making girls jealous because his hair is so perfect.) Many people thing that Taemin with long hair made him look pretty like a girl, but I actually think it's kind of a masculine look on him.
Taemin's hairstyle also made him one of the most popular of the members with their Japanese fans. This was the era when SHINee really started to solidify themselves as Japanese artists, so Taemin's look had Japanese fans gravitating to them. (SHINee debuted in Japan in 2011 and now they are considered one of the most popular artists in Japan as well.)
"Sherlock (Clue & Note)" came out in 2012 -- 4 years after their debut with "Replay." So Taemin is now 18 in this MV. Onew is 22, Jonghyun is 21 and Key and Minho are 20.
The choreography for "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" was created by Tony Testa a very well-known "Hollywood"-famous American choreographer who has also worked with some of the most famous artists, productions and dancers in the world, including Michael Jackson. "Sherlock" was the first time SM (or pretty much anyone in the Kpop industry) had ever used a famous choreographer, and at the time, it was the most expensive Kpop production ever. Once again, SHINee were trendsetters and, because of SHINee's skill level, SM became the first to see the value in using a well-known choreographer to help create their dances and to strive for a level of choreography and video production that surpassed anything that had ever been done before. (Now, SHINee -- and numerous SM groups -- have worked with Tony Testa multiple times over the years.) Today it's common place for Kpop companies to have really famous in-house choreographers, and to seek out people in the industry who are really making a name for themselves to choreograph for them, but SHINee was one of the first.
If you want to see the choreography even better, you should check out SHINee's "Sherlock" dance practice video, or better yet, one of their live concert performances of "Sherlock (Clue & Note)." I recommend their SHINee World Concert IV (SWC4) in Seoul performance from 2015, ruclips.net/video/M4pINahBoRY/видео.html. If you think the MV is good, just wait until you see them perform it live. "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" live is on a whole other level.

If you like vocals, I'd recommend getting into Jonghyun's solo work and SHINee ballads, especially live versions. If you want to see some good production value, watch any of the SHINee World Concerts, especially IV and V.
To be honest, I love their B-sides much better than their title tracks. The title tracks, while executed extremely well and very entertaining, tend to just follow along with the standard boy group trends. The B-sides highlight their strongest aspect, vocals. Jonghyun and Onew could both be considered among the best vocalists in Kpop, with Taemin and Key easily being main or lead vocalists in most groups, and Minho pretty darn good despite starting off as a main rapper.

I’m curious if your opinions regarding some of the songs would change after watching their live counterparts! SHINee is great no matter what, but I think their live performances are where they truly stand above the rest for me. For Lucifer and Sherlock, i like them but the studio versions aren’t my favorite tracks at all, but I think I saw god and heaven when I watched the Shinee World live performances of those songs lmao. Lucifer from Shinee World V really fixes a lot of the repetition bc the live vocals+remix are soooo dynamic, and Sherlock from SWC IV also cuts down on the chorus and focuses more on the bridges and adlibs.

"View" came out in 2015, and it's another one of the numerous songs that was wrote by Jonghyun, SHINee's main vocalist. Jonghyun is highly respected as a singer/songwriter and he was one of the most prolific songwriters and composers of his generation. SHINee were actually the ones to introduce deep house style music to the Kpop industry with "View."
"View" was even voted by the Korean public as one of the songs that needs to make a comeback in 2021, because it was so ahead of its time in 2015 that people didn't appreciate it for what it was. It has now become one of SHINee's most popular songs. Check out SHINee's appearance on the variety show MMTG part 1: ruclips.net/video/siAsCLpgZTI/видео.html and part 2: ruclips.net/video/6GEawttTotU/видео.html when SHINee came on the show to discuss the popularity of "View" and talk about their legacy in the Kpop industry, etc. (They even performed "View" in their Beyond Live virtual concert in 2021 as a special showcase for MMTG.).
Key is SM Entertainment's director of fashion, and he often is the one that designs SHINee's outfits for their MVs and concerts. So, the look and concept for this MV was all created by Key in collaboration with their stylists. He decided he wanted their looks to emulate skater-boy fashion and in order to accomplish that they actually went to the local markets and purchased the clothes for this MV and their comeback stage outfits right off the rack. Which had them setting their own trend yet again, and doing something that no one else was doing at the time. (Everything SHINee does is trendsetting, including their fashion. They are known for their huge influence on the fashion industry in Korea. SHINee is the group that is known for being the first to do almost everything. They start the trend and everyone else follows.)
Onew is the one with the white hat, Jonghyun is the one with the Guns & Roses T-shirt, Key is the one with the "Girl Power" jersey and headband, Minho is the one with the white shirt with the red lettering and Taemin is the one with the gray tank top.
Fun fact: This MV was filmed in Thailand, so the actresses are all Thai. The funny thing is, the girls don't speak Korean. The SHINee members said they really didn't interact much with the girls when not filming because they couldn't communicate with them.
If you look up the lyrics for "View" you will see that the song is about being mesmerized and sort of brainwashed by the beautiful view as seen within a dream. The story in the song is told from the viewpoint of someone with synaesthesia. The MV seems to be about living in the dream of being like a normal group of young men hanging out with friends and having fun in the summer without anything to worry about. However, SHINee have been kidnapped by the girls, and although they end up having fun hanging out together, I think why we hear the police sirens at the end is because the police are coming to rescue SHINee. If you notice, even though they are having fun most of the time, whenever the girls get close to them, SHINee pushes them away, or looks away.
So SHINee are not necessarily 100% OK with everything that is happening.
And, if you want to see how much fun they had making the MV, you should check out the behind the scenes footage. Part 1: ruclips.net/video/Q4Qj-W3-KcI/видео.html and Part 2: ruclips.net/video/awMLgONRV1c/видео.html
To see SHINee's "View" choreography even better you will have to check out a comeback stage or, better yet, one of their concert performances of "View." :D You really need to see a live version to appreciate it. Nothing is better than SHINee live. ;D
Fun fact No. 2: Ian Eastwood, the choreographer that designed Taemin's solo debut "Danger" choreography was the one who choreographed "View."

Shinee is a legendary K-pop group. Much of what defines K-pop today was introduced by them ( example :dande practice). Each member has a unique voice and an incredible stage presence (they all have solo careers). The songs you have listened to are iconic songs (along with ring ding dong). They are an experimental SM group so they are defined by a genre. After don'tcall me Atlantis was released and in 2023 Hard and Juice were released ... although Shinee have evolved over time have always maintained their identity. Riplay is still considered one of the most beautiful debut songs and in my opinion it is timeless. View was written by Jonghyun like many songs of the group (e.g. juliette, selene 6.23, odd eye) and introduced the deep house genre in k-pop. Sherlock was born from the union of two songs (clue and note) and the choreography is by Tony Testa (he choreographed MJ).

They, often, even do concepts that are only going to get popular a few years later. They’re truly trendsetters… btw View was probably one of the biggest kpop shift back then because they introduced this genre when the whole kpop community was leaning towards hard hitting songs with really difficult choreography.

In every video reaction, they would always look for a drastic change within the song itself just like how the more recent songs that is being released today.
They should of course consider of the “era” that this songs were created wherein it would just follow a certain format like Intro-Verse1-Prechorus-Chorus-Verse2-Prechorus-Chorus-Bridge-FInal Chorus. During those times, a little tweak in the end like an addition of a synth, a different base, a change in tempo is already innovative in that period.
During the early days of Kpop the only notable songs that has a “Major” change in a song were TVXQ’s Rising Sun, Girls Generation’s I Got A Boy, f(x)’ Red Light, EXO’s Tempo, several Red Velvet songs and of course majority of AESPA’s new songs.
You should also take note that these is the “Brand” that SM Entertainment is trying to put out there. Vocalcentric song with a lot of harmonization and new sounds. But of course it took years to develop these quality music from KPOP.
AGAIN, music is an evolution and is a continuous process where musicians can express their talents and feelings. You cannot just judge a song because you are comparing it to what is musically appealing now in this generation.
Replay definitely was the best debut in that era, and RnB Pop was not prominent in Korea.
Lucifer that time was a total bop adding to growing “earworm” songs that started in Korea from their release of Ring Ding Dong.
View introduced Deep House Music in Korea which was already a n80s-90s genre in US.
Sherlock which is a combination of 2 songs definitely was the start in KPOP of mixing 2 songs together
Dont Call Me a modern HipHop which adds to shinee’s versatility.

Can't wait for the Taemin reaction. SHINee is my Ult group that I've been following since the day they debuted. I was mentally preparing myself for harsher critiques to their older music since I've seen a few overly harsh reactions from you guys, but thankfully you guys seemed to like them. Don't call me wasn't their latest. They had a repackaged album with Atlantis and a Japanese album with Superstar Mv before Taemin went into the military. When he got out they released the Mv The Feeling for their anniversary before releasing their Album Hard. All 4 of those are good in different ways but I also recommend watching their performance of Dear Name. It's not their song, it's a cover but it shows off their voices.

In SHINee's "Lucifer" MV the "smoke" or "light trail" you see is supposed to represent the aura of a girl who has devilish powers like Lucifer, who is trying to possess them and take over their lives. As the English lines in the song say, "Loveaholic, robotronic ... her whisper is the Lucifer." (They are using auto tune because they are supposed to be "robotronic"-ly controlled by the girl who is "The Lucifer." So the auto tune is meant to make them sound robotic.) In other words, the woman or girl they are talking about is so desirable that she is like Lucifer and you have to use all your willpower just to resist her wiles.
In the MV you see them trying to fight against Lucifer's powers and resist her attempts to try to make them bend to her will, etc. That's why in the choreography you see all the robotic moves because they are showing how "Lucifer" is trying to control them like a robot. For example, they put their wrists together like they are being handcuffed to show how she is trapping them, and they vibrate to show how they are being manipulated by "Lucifer" and they are trying to resist her powers, etc.
FYI: That vibration you saw them do is 100% them actually shaking like that, there aren't any camera tricks. If you watch them perform "Lucifer" live, you will see them do that exact same thing. :D When they explain to people how to do that move they say you have to "tense all your muscles and then pretend like you are being startled."
LOL we have no idea why they had to be dancing in front of a sports car, but that was kind of an iconic thing that Kpop companies did back then in a lot of their MVs. The group would dance around a fancy car to show off their coolness and to give the video a more futuristic, expensive looking aesthetic.
"Lucifer" was released in 2010 -- more than 14 years ago -- so this was just the look that a lot of MVs had back then, in part because everyone was following SHINee's lead. Just take a look at TVXQ's, Super Junior's, Infinite's or 2PM's MVs, etc. from around that time and you will see a similar look and style. SHINee was setting trends in the industry with "Lucifer."
I'm not sure why people are often so thrown by their hairstyles and outfits in this MV. :D I think they are actually all pretty cool for doing something different that sets them apart from everyone else in the industry. That is what makes SHINee legends and why "Lucifer" is such an iconic song and dance. You're not going to remember a group or a song if they look and sound the same as everyone else, you remember them for standing out and not being afraid to be unique. You only wish you were brave enough to look as cool as they do in this MV. ;)
SHINee are icons for everything they do including their fashion and hairstyles. They don't look like that because they didn't care, their hairstyles and clothing choices were chosen because they wanted to stand out. Everything SHINee does is trendsetting and because of their experimental concept, they are intentionally meant to do something that no one else is doing in order to create the next trend. Nothing SHINee ever does will be the same and they tackle a new genre of music, dance and fashion with EVERY song they release, including within a single album. They are the group that the rest of the industry pays attention to as a guide for what the next trends will be in the Kpop industry.
SHINee are also known for never being afraid to experiment with everything they do, including their style, and as the fashionista and literally a stylist for the group, Key is always looking for ways to be unique, so what you see is his hair was bleached blond on the side and then shaved down to his scalp. He is known for always wanting to stand out. That's why Key's style is often just straddling the edge of outrageous, but somehow always manages to look cool.
This was also the era where Taemin had long hair and it made him one of the most popular of the members at the time, especially with their Japanese fans. The Japanese culture really embraces men with long hair and the members said that he was one of the most popular at the time because of his style. Taemin with long hair is so iconic and many in the fandom were really sad when he eventually cut his hair. Taemin may not talk about loving or hating his hairstyles, but he has no problem laughing about their past looks. In the last few years he has learned to embrace his androgynous side and he often still wears hair extensions in his MVs and concerts, just check out his solo MV "Advice" or his blond hair during SHINee's "Hard," etc.
Fun fact: One reason why Minho has super short hair in "Lucifer" is because SHINee's comeback before this was for their song "Ring Ding Dong" and during that comeback everyone had long rocker hairstyles. Minho hated his long hair, but he was forced to live with it for several months because it was part of their promotions. (Minho says he hadn't cut his hair since debut, so in "Ring Ding Dong" era he had been growing his hair out for more than a year.) Therefore, I have a feeling, the minute he was finally able to cut his hair he decided to go really short for "lucifer", and he has refused to grow his hair out long ever since. ;P
In this MV, Taemin had just turned 17. Onew and Jonghyun are 20 and Key and Minho are 18.
If you want to see where SHINee truly shines, you have to check out a performance of "Lucifer" Live in concert at their SHINee World Concert III (SWC3) in Seoul from 2014, ruclips.net/video/Fm5n8Q2XO34/видео.html, and/or their "Ring Ding Dong" and "Lucifer" set at their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) in Seoul in 2016, ruclips.net/video/mtFK7FxKdLs/видео.html. This is a perfect example of how you can tell they are singing live and killing it every time. SHINee doesn't need auto tune, and if you hear them perform the song live, they often don't use it. If you think Jonghyun's long high note was amazing in the MV, just wait to see what he can do live.
"Lucifer" is actually known as one of the most difficult songs and dances to cover because of its tutting and popping and for the fact that it has a very fast paced beat with dance moves that are very sharp and precise, which are designed to hit every beat of the song. (They actually refer to that tutting formation as a bug or worm. Their arms are supposed to look like the legs of a creature.) And the song itself is very complicated with the songs wide range of notes and flow.
Many amateurs have thought "Lucifer" looks like one of SHINee's more simple songs and dances. But the minute they try to sing the song and/or dance the choreography, they soon discover that it is way more complicated than they thought. It only looks and sounds simple, because SHINee makes it look that way. Check out this clip of SHINee teaching a group of actors and comedians "Lucifer" as part of a challenge on the variety show "Invincible Baseball Team," ruclips.net/video/-TLCK7KbLus/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/0V02cQwYLMQ/видео.html. It's funny because when they came to meet SHINee to start the practice, Jonghyun asked them why they chose this song of all songs, and they said because it looks manly and they thought it was fairly easy to cover. But the first thing Jonghyun said to them, while laughing, was "oh no, actually it's one of our most difficult and it took us extra time to really perfect it." :D

You should definitely check out the dance practice. SHINee's "Lucifer" dance practice video was the very first dance practice video ever in the Kpop industry to be released specifically for fans. They had never made a dance practice video that wasn't just for them to watch, so to SHINee this was just a dance practice, it wasn't a performance video like what you see in "dance practice" videos today. SHINee is the group that started the dance practice video trend, and they are why dance practice videos are even a thing today. :D
SHINee's "Lucifer" dance practice video was also the very first dance practice video to go viral. Back then, dance practice videos were usually only filmed for the group and artists to watch to help them remember the moves and to fix mistakes, etc. They weren't intended for a mass audience, but SM realized that fans were starting to copy SHINee's choreography, so they decided to film a dance practice and release it to the public. SHINee's dance practice videos became so popular that other companies and groups started to follow suit and show off their choreography by releasing dance practices too. Just another way, SHINee influenced the industry and changed Kpop forever. :D

Sherlock was originally two different songs. Clue and Note. They decided that both versions were a little boring on their own and shoved them together. That's probably why the Chorus seems so sudden.

I can't believe you didn't like Lucifer. It is one of the most popular songs, covered by other K-pop artists, and the most expensive choreography SM Entertainment has ever paid for.

Sherlock is a mash up of 2 songs, Clue + Note. The parts you guys like are mostly in Clue, and they decided that adding the chorus from Note would help to appeal to the public more.

I loved watching this reaction video, but if there is going to be any sequels (not including covering SHINee’s solo work), I would want to see a reaction to some of SHINee’s b-side tracks (Excuse Me Miss, Hitchhiking, Symptoms, Odd Eye, Juice, etc.). SHINee’s title songs are great on their own but their b-side tracks are next level, especially when compared to other b-sides in the industry.
I’d also like to see a reaction video exclusively for their Japanese tracks (not the Japanese versions of their Korean title tracks of course). When it comes to SHINee’s Japanese tracks, they hit different than their Korean ones. Still with that essence of SHINee but their approach is different, I guess you could say. My recommendations would be 1,000 Years, Boys Meet U, Lucky Star, Your Number, DxDxD, and Get The Treasure.

I'm a baby Shawol so I'm still catching up on them. I found them when I watched Minho in the K-Drama, 'Hwrang'. He certainly was scouted for his visuals but he is more than that. I'm BTS ARMY so they are connected through, 'V' and Taemin's friend, Jimin. I think SHINee is instantly recognisable. Being so distinctive is a real bonus. 'Don't Call Me' was their Come Back after the three oldest had finished their military service. Time to listen to their much more recent song, 'Hard'. They all have recent solo albums and a group album.

With "Don't Call Me," SHINee are just doing what we longtime fans have all come to expect from them -- showing us something that has never been seen or heard before and starting a new trend. Every song you hear and every choreography you see from them should be like nothing they have ever done. They are supposed to reinvent the industry with every comeback. That is why they are constantly raising the bar with everything they do. When it comes to SHINee, it should always feel "very different." That's what makes them SHINee. :D With every new song release, SHINee are expected to come out with a style and sound that is brand new, not only for them, but in the industry as a whole. And "Don't Call Me" is a perfect example of that.
"Don't Call Me" was released in 2021 and it was SHINee's first comeback in almost 3 years because Onew, Key and Minho had all just recently been discharged from the military. This comeback was a really big deal because it was the first time we had seen SHINee back together in a really long time. And this wasn't the only thing they were involved in. With this comeback, they set out to outdo themselves within only a few months of their return from the military, and they had to do it all within a couple of months because Taemin was about to enlist.
Fun fact: Pearl Aqua is SHINee's fan color, so all the blue/green aqua colors you see in this MV are meant to represent SHINee. That is why in the scene where they are wearing the brown outfits, Key has the aqua yarn woven into his sweater and why the collar of Onew's jacket was dyed aqua, etc.
You should also check out SHINee's live performance stage for "Don't Call Me," ruclips.net/video/N3103Su_-cM/видео.html. (If you like the piano in this song, just wait until you see their live performance. The piano becomes even more noteworthy in the live. I won't spoil it, you will just have to watch it to see what I mean. :D)
Because Taemin is also a member of SuperM, an SM Entertainment supergroup that is made up of members of SM's other boy groups -- Baekhyun and Kai from EXO, Taemin, Taeyong and Mark from NCT, Ten from WayV and Lucas who is now a solo artist -- I think SHINee's "Don't Call Me" MV and Fake Reality teaser is SM's way of drawing SHINee into the SM Universe and fully connecting SHINee to SuperM's/EXO's storyline. Hence, Minho's red hair and the red room with the chairs hanging from the ceiling. I think this might be connected in someway to the Red Force -- which the evil group or being in EXO's storyline -- and EXO's/SuperM's storyline. Although I have not worked out what it all means yet. (In EXO's storyline when we see Red objects or Red light this usually means this is something being controlled by the Red Force.)
Therefore, most of SM's groups have storylines that connect. For example, I see connections between EXO, SuperM, aespa and SHINee with the fact that we see SuperM riding on a subway train in their "100" MV and we see aespa in the subway in their debut "Black Mamba" MV, and now we see SHINee also in a train station in "Don't Call Me." And most recently, we saw Baekhyun from EXO/SuperM on an old train in his solo "Bambi" MV. We even see Kai from EXO/SuperM on train tracks and people on a subway train platform in his "Film: Kai" solo debut teaser video during his "Amnesia" section of the video and as it transitions to "Mmmh." We also see Key from SHINee in a subway train in his solo debut "One of Those Nights" MV. And if we go back even further, we see EXO on train tracks in their "Love Me Right" MV and EXO-CBX (which Baekhyun is also a member of) on train tracks in their "Horololo" MV, etc.
The train station/subway platform in "Don't Call Me" also is given a very futuristic EXO-like feel with the view of space and the planets in the sky when you see SHINee dancing on the train platform.
The scene with Key in the red outfit standing on the phone booth submerged in water, looks like it could have something to do with the Red Force as well. And it also looks very similar to the scene with Taeyeon, from Girls' Generation, standing on the rock in the middle of the Ocean in Key's solo "Hate That ..." MV. Taeyeon is even wearing the same color red dress, in "Hate That ...," and both Key and her have very similar styles and poses. And now, it also looks like this could be connected to SHINee's new "Hard" MV storyline, with Minho standing on the rock wearing a red jacket, with a vibe very similar to this as well.
We also see in that scene with Key standing on the phone booth in "Don't Call Me," him dressed in his black outfit with the feather headpiece standing in front of the image of himself, which looks as though this could be showing him in an alternate realities -- or a "fake reality."
Then in the next scene, it looks as though the SHINee members go through some sort of wormhole as they are teleported somewhere and we see them all posing in their black outfits. This looks very similar to the scene in SuperM's debut "Jopping" MV. When the SuperM members are coming together at the beginning of "Jopping," they are each teleported through space, which looks very similar to that scene with the black wall with stars in "Don't Call Me."
Therefore, because the members of SuperM are supposed to be coming together to help EXO fight the Red Force and to prevent or stop them from taking over the world, etc., I think SM is setting it up so that all of its groups' members will eventually be brought into the fight. (The Red Force, is the evil group or being who EXO are fighting against in their storyline.)
If you follow EXO's storyline, in EXO's "Obsession" MV we learn that the good guys are the members in the all black outfits, and in "Jopping" we see SuperM's "Avengers uniform" is similar all black outfits. So, in the scene in "Don't Call Me," when we see SHINee all together in those black outfits, it looks as though they might be preparing to join in the fight.

That is why I think that even though SHINee are part of the second generation, that SM is now working on bringing them into the storyline. And although most of SM's older groups' concepts and MVs may have never been originally designed to have any type of connection to anything to do with anything, that doesn't necessarily mean that over the years as EXO's story has evolved or SM's Universe concept was being created, that SM didn't find "happy coincidences" within those MVs that allowed them to use them as a way to connect things together. For example, some have pointed to the fact that NingNing's butterfly in aespa's concept from 2020 could be connected to the butterfly in EXO's debut "Mama" MV from 2012, as well as the butterfly in NCT-127's "Favorite (Vampire)" MV from 2021, and some have made compelling arguments that it could even be connected to SHINee's butterfly in their "Ring Ding Dong" MV from 2009. I mean we see what looks like the pink planet from Super Junior's "House Party" MV and a scene from Super Junior-K.R.Y.'s "When We Were Us" MV from 2020 in "aespa's ep.1 - SM Culture Universe" video. And SM has even brought Kangta, who is a member of the very first Kpop boy group H.O.T., which debuted in 1996, into the storyline with his solo MV remake of H.O.T's song "Free to Fly." which looks like they are on another planet in the MV and it featured Winter from aespa and Sungchan, who is a former member of NCT and now a member of SM's new boy group RIIZE, in the story. Changmin from TVXQ was also brought into the story in 2022 with his song "Devil," as the MV shows him on a pink planet and he talks about Kwangya in the song lyrics. And even more recently, BoA, who is a solo artist, became a villain within aespa's storyline. So it's starting to look like SM may be hinting at eventually bring all of their artists into the storyline, including their older groups.
